| During the 80's, at a time I had no idea what anime was all about, I rented this title on VHS. I think 6 dubbed episodes were released back then and I do not know if there were more.
Fortunately the episodes are available on VHS rip and I'll gladly rewatch them just for childhoods nostalgia sake.
I have often confused this title with Astro Boy, so unless I dont plan to see the original 60's title or the remakes, the mods can freely delete my Astro Boy review.
Now I remember that this title had similarities with another favorite childhood cartoon, namely Mighty Mouse, though this had more tense moments and drama that were a little too much for a 5-6 year old child back then.
Though I dislike the mecha genre and the fights with huge robots, I think this title was a good introduction and I'd prefer the simplicity of the battles much more.
Graphics and sfx were simple and colourfull yet the battles remained in my mind. Characters like Super Mars and his robot girl friend and some of the badies demonstrated clearly why Japanese cartoons were considered more violent back then and at the same time more different (though not always better) from western cartoons of the 70's and 80's.
Some battles will be never erased from my childhood memories.
I'll rewatch this title soon but because I dont want my initial impressions to be stained by my adult prejudice, I'll write the review just with my childhood impressions.
I wouldnt recommend watching this title, unless you've seen it during the 80's as a child. This title is for collectors or for those who want to relive their memories.
Comparing it with the PC cartoons of today wouldnt do it any justice, but it shows why back then watching TV was better and more "romantic", instead of today where you have everything served on a plate.
A gem.
