| Seemingly normal boy Yuji stumbles upon a totally new shadow world and a girl unlike any he's ever seen before. SNS starts out unlike any series before degenerating into standard villain fare.

| Shakugan no Shana is an engaging story about a mysterious world where foreign beings eat human "existence" and special warriors called Flame Haze battle to maintain balance in the world.
We are introduced to this world by a seemingly ordinary guy named Yuji who soon finds himself emerged in a world that we would never have fathomed. Enter in a Flame Haze with the famous "urusai urusai urusai!" catchphrase and you've got the makings of a compelling show.
This show combines some elements of action, romance, and drama though they are not as strong as in some other shows (Kenshin *cough*). Despite some shortcomings, the show still succeeds in presenting the plot and character development in an enjoyable fashion.
(This review is based off of watching the entire two seasons some time ago followed by a rewatch of the first season.)

| When I first saw this I really had high hopes that this wont be a boring series, but I guess I just expected too much from this, in the end, it was just plain disappointing. The story is interesting, but not original, the sound track is okay and sounds cool and the fight scenes isnt so bad either. So whats the problem? The pacing is too slow, there are just episodes in this series that doesnt have much significance to the story, I think the creators are just trying to drag the series to make it to 20 something episodes. This series could have been less boring if its made of 15 episodes. There isnt so much character development here either especially for yuji sakai, he was just the same all the way the end of the season, considering how serious the story is, the characters are pretty shallow. I could have liked this if the series tried to develop more on the story rather than the romance department, like what would happen if the tomogaras destroys the balance of the world? What do they mean about "balance of the world", balance of what? Who gave the power of existence to humans? Are they just limited to humans or they also apply to animals and plants or even non-living things since they all have existence? There are still things left unclear, I hope that in the second series they will give more dept on the story more, but maybe im just still expecting too much again.

| Shakugan no Shana... Anime is about a boy and a girl, he is a normal student walking everyday to school and now he starts a new semester in a new school, she is a Flame Haze a creature only living to fight nemesis of this world 'Tomogara's' witch are powerful and dangerous creatures. This story complicates fast when - in the first episode - You are informed that Sakai Yuji (the main hero) is not Sakai Yuji, but just a copy of him created to maintain the balance of the world - known as torch. His 'existence energy' will burn out and he will vanish in a short time... Not only that is on his mind, while the 'Flame-Haired Burning-Eyed Hunter' is still complicating his thoughts.
But from two main characters, hero and heroin, Shana (Yuji gives her a name witch is the last phrase of her sword name 'Nietono no Shana') is the one with complicated hart. All she is able to recall of herself is that she is a flame haze that's all in her mind...
This is the beginning of a far more interesting story not only summarising two nicely designed heroes but also a load of school live, fantasy, drama and mostly fight, witch is the part of this series making it a good show.
A little bit about the studio. J.C.STAFF are good in what they do. They animated such titles as:
Ai Yori Aoshi (8.0/10.0 (121 reviews) (top 199: # 86)), Ai Yori Aoshi ~Enishi~ (7.3/10.0 (52 reviews) (top 199: # 180)), Alien Nine (7.4/10.0 (44 reviews) (top 199: # 181)) - one of the better animes in year 2001, Azumanga Daioh (8.5/10.0 (167 reviews) (top 199: # 37)), Excel Saga (7.9/10.0 (79 reviews) (top 199: # 115)), Karin (7.5/10.0 (20 reviews)), and Shigofumi ~Stories of Last Letter ~ (with not a lot of reviews, only one at this time and mine :) but one of my personal beloved short series). So makes a good and perfect background for Shana anime series.
To make to the details...
Animation is one of the crucial thing around this anime, as well as Shana, Yuji and all other characters even the background persons are well animated with good lines and colours. It is a very nice and 'kawaii' line, perfect for not tall girls. The light in fights and shadows at night or sun downs are making great work for atmosphere. I was not able to see one ore two mistakes in work of animation. For year 2005 it is one of the best, and even now in 2008 it is still perfect.
Sound... I rate it to 10/10, why You asc? The sound is perfect in all aspects. The crew done a formidable work with Hino Satoshi ('Hiraga Saito' in 'Zero no Tsukaima' and 'Sai' in 'Naruto Shippuden' or other), Kugimiya Rie (voices in 'Zero no Tsukaima', 'Rosario to Vampire', 'Pita Ten', 'Nabari no Oh', 'Hayate no Gotoku', and even 'Fullmetal Alchemist' her voice is Alphonse Elfic), but that's not all Kawasumi Ayako ('.hack//Legend of Twilight Bracelet', 'Kanon', 'Kanon 2006', and 'Girls Bravo'), Ehara Masashi and even Iwata Mitsuo. It is crucial for any anime, and people are not aware of that. Voices are well developed and are good for the personal way of the characters. But the sound is also music and if you asc me it was another good and marvellous part it makes a good sense with the moves of camera and the song in the END was just perfect.
Story is one good part of plot with a load of secrets concerning Yugi and the artefact sealed in him, as well as the relations in the world. After the new heroes are presented and the movement of time You will like the pace and the way of development. Not to mention the 'bad ones' - tomogaras are personalities with goals, ambtions and ways to make there dreams come truth.
One of the main power of this series is that you are not bothered with non important details of the world. The facts that maybe are good to now, but not necessary to understand the whole. it is mostly visible in fight when you are presented with pure skills, action and fights. No boring and over longed explanations on how she or he was able to harm the opponent with that or this kind of attack. If You are not aware of what I'm trying to say watch fight in Naruto or Dragon Ball.
But the main thing are characters. Designed by Otsuka Mai, are perfection of emotions and are not as standard as they seem to.
Starting from Shana - she is obsessed with her role as flame haze at the beginning, but she changes after she encounters Yugi - he is a torch but he is not egocentric or paranoiac after he is able to accept his fate, and she starts to look upon herself and creates emotions in her emotionless heart.
Yuji from the other side is aware of his short time left, but is not concentrated on his fate, rather starts to make rational and good for his friends choices. Ready to put himself in danger or even to lose his short live left to save others.
Heroes are good reflections of normal people with no heroic poses, no pathetic talk of saving the world or ethics, religion. You will find yourself in them sooner or later.
I value the anime high. It is one of the better series I watched, and I watched a lot. But if you asc my opinion on both sesons I will tell you that the first one is better, slithery better. It was much more original and fresh in 2005, so the rating is so good.
Before I say and make a solution there is one good thing to mention. Humour in the series is good and balanced, but it is not over reacted, so it is not a comedy, but there are parts making you smile, not that You will have to call ambulance, but normally smile.
In the end I enjoyed it to the end, You will like the series for it heroes, story and action, but there is one problem...
It is not ending in the way you are prepared for. The last episodes are more or less a pre for the next season even if it ends. So You have to watch the second one.

| Shakugan no Shana [SnS] is one of those animes that you are going to have to watch on your own to form your own opinions because it's a series that tries to encompass a lot of anime sub-genres with the hopes of gaining a wider audience. Whether or not they have done so successfully is certainly subject to speculation but what I do know for sure is that it's an A-OK anime in my book.
While it might be more prominently identified as a Fantasy/Mystical Battle series, for me, those elements took a back seat to the more touching and more human moments of the show and I think more people will like SnS if they shifted their expectations a bit and viewed this series more as a High School/Slice-of-Life show with Mystical and Fantastic Battles thrown in the mix as opposed to the other way around. Otherwise you are going to get your hopes too high for this show and expect some kind of super awesome Battle-Type Anime series with all these angsty and existential meanings only to be let down by the unsightly array of corny villains and unoriginal, antagonistic, world domination plots.

| When i first started watching Shakugan no Shana, i couldnt get myself to finish it. Then i was very surprised that there is a second season to come and thought that perhaps i was wrong and i didnt see the greatness of SnS. But my first impression was completely right. Shakugan no Shana is one of those anime that have a great idea and a really intriguing plot but they cant follow up on it. The first episode was stunning and i was looking forward to a deep and somehow philosophic anime but it turns out into a bad-guy-appears-and-is-defeated-anime. After episode 10 i stopped watching again because i was annoyed by the two siblings playing around and of the simplistic and boring way the story was going.
Overall there were few things that caught my attention but the animation and the fights were really cool. No unnecessary talk and the fights didnt stretch over a few eps. The characters were interesting in the ebginning but after some time you knew what would happen next and that is were SnS loses its intensity. The love story is not too bad but i am not suited for that kind of anime. I would have preferred a deeper story and a more detailed explanation of our world. Because the thought of someone disappearing and being forgotten in an instant was cool and probably the best about Shakugan no Shana.
Overall i have to say that if you want to have an easy time watching anime, this is probably best suited. Dont be deceived by the intelligent beginning. You are watching an average, childish anime.

| It is such a pity though,Shakugan no Shana.I thought I am going to witness and enjoy an excellent story plot and drama throughout since it's opening turned out to be really good.
First episode, the narrator who happened to be the male lead,Sakai Yuji, welcomes you to his last normal day(morning-evening only, lol) in his life.He introduced you Ike(his best friend in middle school?)and how excited he is towards high school days. Then in class,Hiraii was introduced to you too after helping Sakai with the question(I guess). After school,he met Hirai again
in the CD station shop. Then, you get to know that Hirai has a liking towards Ike.They waved goodbye to each other and
"See you tomorrow in school!".A Fuuzetsu(a seal)was set then a monster came out and started to devour everything.Just when Sakai was going to get killed,a Flame Haze saved him and the story began.<<<is based on episode one.
Episode two basically covers the informations you need to know as you advance to the next episode and so on.They made a great drama to let us further understand 'torch' by involving Hirai into the
catastrophe.Sakai was of course very shocked that Hirai was in it and everything happening to him that very day.Hirai then disappeared due to the burnt out flame and it was indeed very sad(I mean it).It was also indeed a great start.
It then go horribly wrong when they turn their focus on the fate of Flame Haze and their mission. It was never that interesting anymore and your drama expectation can just stop here. The story was like;enemy come, hero kill then enemy come, hero kill again and then the finale last boss and still hero win through a hard fight. It became an action anime.Speaking of it's action,it was that boring that I ended up comparing with Pokemon and Digimon and find it quite similar. There you have it,Team Rocket and Garurumon's Fox Fire anyone?
If they hadn't add in more to Shana and Sakai relationship and some school life's romance,I would have watch other animes or do other things rather than wasting my time on this pointless show.
Characters like Rammie and Kham-something(the Tuner Flame Haze)never made any appearance(not saying the ending of last episode when you only had a glimpse of them with the 1st opening song of the anime)already when I wanted them to be out in some occasions though. It was disappointing. They also added in Shana's story to become a Flame Haze in episode 14-16(yea?).I have to say,it was boring...
After all,it was fine...and they did conclude pretty much everything for the first season.
Luckily, they didn't made it more bizarre and there is even an episode mainly for fanservice(episode 9).I really did enjoyed the first 2 episodes.
I even watched 6 episode of the second season. The opening of the second season is
another impressive work though not as good as the first. So I will be a little biased to the advantage of this anime...

| From the first episode itself, it is quite evident the route Shakugan no Shana would take in the future episodes. It starts of with a usual theme of a young boy being introduced to a strange beautiful girl who comes from a different world. Add to this the cliché of the boy having some power - and the initial premise is complete. Shakugan is no different - but does this make it any better? Can it stand out in the sea of shonen anime with the same premise? For a while it does - it has good action, characters which come across as likeable within 15 minutes of their appearances. There is a nice touch of romance as well. But sooner or later - Shakugan no Shana is faced with taking the tries and tested route or a totally novel one. This series takes the former route.

| Shana is a 24 episode long anime made in 2005 with an extremely interesting and promising storyline, but was ultimately let down by its sub standard animation, uninteresting dialogue, repetitive battle scenes, slow execution, and uninteresting plot twists.
The animation in Shana is overall sub standard for its time, due to the inconsistency between character designs, repetitive battle scenes and overly static scenes. The quality of the graphics and smoothness of the animation are sufficient in most episodes, but occasionally everything would take a very noticeable nose dive and turn the entire scene into an eye sore. Consistency would be what's most lacking in Shana animation wise.
One department Shana does quite well at is music. Its theme songs are very good to listen to and fit in with the series very well. The background music, although repetitive, also complements their respective scenes. The only bit that was a bit of a let down would be the voice acting. I couldn't help but feel that some characters weren't sounding sufficiently convincing, although that could simply be due to the poor execution of the characters and storyline damaging the mood of the scenes.
Storyline wise, some scenes in Shana are nothing short of a pure agony to watch. Nevertheless, the underlying storyline of Shana is fascinating. The first few episodes will easily attract viewers to the anime, and the ending is quite well executed. Nevertheless, the overall implementation of the storyline of Shana was nothing short of a disaster: the dialogue torturously boring, the pace excruciatingly slow, and the side-story plot twists absolutely baffling.
The realisation of the storyline could only be achieved by an equally poorly executed cast. The characters themselves did fit in very well with the storyline, but for some of them: their development was lacking, their voices unconvincing, their designs inconsistent, and their dialogue dull. A shame really.
Shana is an anime with huge potential gone to waste. With the correct graphics and animation, sub-plots, character development, and an entire re-written script, it could have become one of the best anime I have ever watched. Sadly, that was not the case, and I would not deem it worthwhile for anyone to sit through 24 episodes, most of which are tedious beyond imagination, only to realise for themselves how such a promising story has been squandered.

| Note: This review is for both first and second seasons of this show.
What would you do if one day you would be told that you aren't really human, that your existance was stolen sometime ago, that you're just a reminder of what was once known as you and you will disappear forever just in a matter of days?
Shakugan no Shana is a good show, it has original and interesting premise, promising characters and imaginative world. Unfortunately, as most of the recent shounen wannabe animes it loses half of its appeal in the later half. While the premise is great for a tragic and tear inducing love story, soon you realise that show is too soft for that and as you can guess, it comes with a solution how to turn itself into an actually happy show. Either way, Shakugan no Shana is not a bad show, even though the later half and the ending might disappoint it's still a worthwile anime to spend your time with.
So if you're up for some shounen action or shounen romance (certainly got me there) you should give this show a shot. It wont become a legend and will probably be forgotten after some years, but it's still better than most of the recent shows out here.

| Animation:
Really good animation quality. This is what made me watch in the first place. High contrast in colors were used at times.
Sound:
Voice's of the actors matched their characters. Backround music was average, i suppose. The first Opening for this anime was amazing, second op was average and endings were average.
Story:
Seeing just first episode, i noticed lots of similarities to Bleach (anime) but I didnt really mind that.
Well, the main story was very good, although it did progress ratherly slowly. The first part of the story was boring in my opinion, but it gets much better later on. The romance-ish part of the story and flashblack arc were interesting, and kept me watching.
Characters:
This, I feel was one of the strongest points. Most of the characters grow on you after watching, and it is interesting to see how they progress and enteract (for example: The love triangle between Yuji,Shana, and that other girl (sry can't remember her name -_-)
Value:
Lots of rewatchable parts/episodes in this anime. the fansubs presented by [eclipse] were pretty good
Enjoyment:
I enjoyed this show a lot and am waiting patiently for (1) the movie and (2) the second season ^_^ I would recommend this to anyone who likes romance/action animes and to anyone who likes bleach.

| I thought the start of the anime (episodes 1 and 2) started out a little slow and left me with the impression that the anime would run out of idea quick. However shakugan no shana quickly built up a great storyline and amazing characters. Near the end of the series I found myself cheering on shana in fights and in her love for yuji. The ending of the anime i thought was great and lead the way for either a second season or a movie (as there will be). I greatly enjoyed shakugan no shana and hope the movie doesn't dissapoint.

| Shakugan no Shana begins with quite a bang with a bunch of new interesting terms and characters such as Tomogara, Rinne, Flame Haze and the world of Guze (and trying to keep the balance, etc). However, as the story progresses, this series basically becomes a horribly cliche and contrived romance scene with absolutely no progress in any meaningful direction. Objectively, nothing about this series stands out at all - neither the story nor characters are worth it for watching this series.
About the only reason I kept watching this series was because I found Shana to be adorable in the beginning. Her black hair and black stockings were quite attractive and I kept watching the series. However, as episode after episode passed, I just felt horribly unsatisfied with any of the character development. For a short while, it was interesting to watch Shana and Yuji battle the 'evil baddies' as well as train together, in hopes that perhaps something intense would occur, but nope. There are only TWO interesting events... one begins around episode 18 but it doesn't get really devleoped to a full emotional extent. The second one is the end of episode 21 which marks the beginning of the climax. My general point is that Shakugan no Shana really doesn't ever take off to become something memorable.

| After watching other animes, i thought shakugan no shana was going to be a joke parody, But after watching the series i was proved wrong.
This anime makes you start to wonder, whats going on in the world? What if torches were real? we wouldn't know because torches are forgotten.
It tells a story of hate, and differences, but it also teaches people to think positive, use your own perspective, and choose your own path in life.
It also tells a story of love and jelousy, and i loved that, because it gave yet another story and dilema.
Overall i reccomend this to everyone that likes a mix of genres,

| Shakugan No Shana is an amazing anime. It has a good storyline and there is a lot of action/romance. It starts out kind of confusing and sometimes you'll get lost, but that doesn't stop it from being a good anime.
The animations are absolutely beautiful. (Especially those fight scenes) The artwork is wonderful, it is so good colored. The animations are good in every way.
The reason I found about this anime was because I had an opening to Shakugan no Shana. I LOVE THE OPENINGS SO MUCH. The ending music was ok, it wasn't awful, but it wasn't super duper great either. The voice acting is pretty normal, nothing out of ordinary there.
Pretty good, but I got confused at the beginning of the anime. But as soon as the anime goes along you'll get what's happening. The story is something new though, evil dollies are attacking the earth and sucking up people's souls and there are people who are called Flame Haze who try to stop the bad guys. ETC ETC.
Characters are ok. Shana is really cool, but she can be really stubborn. Yuji is kind of a wimp and does nothing, but that's ok. I still like him =)
Overall this is a must watch anime for any people who love action and love romance. And an above average anime (Wow look at all those words that start with A) for those who don't like love romance. Well give it a try, you might not be dissapointed.

| I believe Shakugan no Shana is a very good anime.
The animation is amazing, the sound is good, the music is noticeably good, which is a must for good anime, and the first episode really jump starts the series, which is also important.
To me, the most important factors in anime though, are the story/plot and characters. I often leave myself to decide if i truely love a series only after watching the ending. If the ending is bad or un satisfying, im often left with a disappointed feeling.
Shakugan no Shana, has a very well-thought, deep-hearted storyline. There is a lot of information given, when u dont really understand the meaning until later on. By all means, you can probably guess where the story may lead from the first episode. However, the route to get there makes u doubt if u were right to assume. The plotline has a lot of turnarounds, and downright shocking moments. Most of which are in dramatic settings.
The story itself, is very unique, with a lot of thought put into the real world, and the alternate world; as well, as the technical aspects behind the balance of the world and spiritual essences.
What makes Shakugan no Shana special is it keeps you guessing and you dont know what to expect. You will find things happening that u really want to see or those that u despise and make you want to turn away. Its the powerful, gripping mood, combined with the entertaining and interesting character development and background, that makes Shakugan no Shana truely something amazing. (not to say i didnt hate when the main character was a fool towards shana, but it gets explained later on..)
With that said its not 100% perfect, but i believe shakugan no shana will entertain those who appreciate quality dramatic anime. And on that note, yes, the ending was very satisfying.

| Shakugan no Shana is a very well made series that is enjoyable on all levels. The animation is very good, and most of the character designs are good, though the style seems a bit generic at times.
The music is great, particularly the openings by Kawada Mami and Kotoko (both of I've Sound.) The endings are not quite as superb as the openings, but great nevertheless.
Story and character are very compelling, though the story never really gives off the epic feel it seems to be going for. The characters on the other hand are excellent, though their stories are disappointingly incomplete. Thankfully the movie is on the way though, which will hopefully continue their stories.
I foresee this series becoming very popular in the future once it gets more exposure. It's a very addicting series and I hope that it continues beyond the movie.
