This anime blows. It is ludacris to think that this anime is anything above average. The whole 26 episode revolves around 4 Mahjong matches that go on with boring narratives and repetitive 1st person comments. To add on that there are technically no storyline that drives this anime! Oh my gosh there's a crazy mahjong player, here is akagi to the rescue... Even the characters are nothing but ridiculous personality. No history no background. I couldn't care less is if Akagi died! All and in all this anime is horrible. If you got tons of time to waste like me, watch it. But if not stay away.

At the early glance i kindda hoped this would be condensed and slightly evil version hikaru no go or something. Turns out that it's not. There is no storyline here folks. It's more like mahjong match of the week type of story progression. Nothing really drives anything. They just throw it boring dialogue and monologue heavy matches to put the audiences to sleep. And the ending has to be one of the worst endings i've seen in a very long time.

Characters are just machines. they give us no reason to think or care about them. Yes akagi at first is enigmatic characters and we have no backgrounds or history to find out anything about him. Why and how did he become so fearless? did something happen in his past? I mean come on. What is this guy about? Is he just plain insane? all the characters in this game have no history! They are no more then empty shell lying around.

Animation is different. No big eyes that cover 3/4 of the faces. But we do have extremely angular designs. Akagi's chin is sharp enough to stab someone. and all the other peoples nose are flat and angular enough to rest a coffee cup on it. But animation certainly brought out its gritty mood, and in that consideration it was a mild success. Same thing goes for the music.

This anime simply blows. There's really nothing here to be impressed about. No story, no interesting characters, boring mahjong sequences, lame ending. Look somewhere else for entertainment not here.

I think this is one of the most overrated series I've seen in a while. It's about Akagi, who unrealistically becomes a mahjong genius over night.
Most people praise Akagi for being an extremely tough, intelligent and daring character, and that the anime reeks of manliness. After hearing dozens of people praising it, I decided to give it a try.
Overall, I think the viewers who praise this show are easily deceived. Akagi is not tough at all. There is nothing tough about staring death in the eye, when Akagi's already suicidal and has nothing to lose. In fact, all his opponents are cowards who break like nothing, while a lot of Akagi's supposed skill comes from luck, such as when drawing the right tile at the right time.
The show is just not very good, as it uses typical shounen clichès, such as overblown reaction, stereotypical characters and very obvious storytelling techniques that can only impress people who enjoy mindless Hollywood movies. The bad guy laughs manically, think he has the upper hand, then Akagi smirks, explains how he's played his game and shows a winning hand. Rinse and repeat.
Basically, if you enjoy good movies and can see through some very old and tired film making techniques, I suggest you stay away from this one.
If you're easily impressed, then by all means, enjoy Akagi for what it's worth.

I never thought there'd be a shounen anime about games that I'd enjoy thoroughly without thinking about the crap that was Yu-gi-oh or the failure that was Beyblades. Akagi is about Akagi Shigeru, a genius who descended into the void known as the underworld's game of Mahjong. Here, we're treated to 4 intensively analysed and sweat-breaking games with an exponentially-rising difficulty level characterized by the opponents. Not only are the games variably interesting, but the psychological strategies involved will send chills down your spine whenever Akagi's calm and cool face is panned. Even if you've never heard of Mahjong in your life, you'll eventually pick out some details of the game after watching several episodes and perhaps you'll want to learn about it.

The only turn-downs I see are that some matches drag on FOREVER (typical of this genre, however) and you might find some dullness in the characters, leading to unbelievability and boredom. If you aren't hooked by the first episode, I don't think this genre's for you. If you do love the tense atmosphere and Akagi's badass ways, you'll find this to be very worthwhile of your time.

An amazing anime. however not for all. When i watched i knew nothing about mahjong but you pick up a few things along the way. A anime about the genius Akagi Shigeru and his decent into the darkness of the yakuza. Sure the characters look a litle different from what most people expect to see from a character but i heartilly enjoyed it. i think its a must try.

If you can get past the ugly char design, you'll find a wonderful dark psychological series about a boy's descent into the world of the Yakuza. It is not your typical competition anime. Akagi cheats, shoots people, and bets on fingers, hands and arms. He is not just a mahjong genius but a genius at understanding the human psyche which he manipulates to his advantage.
