A Beautiful Short Anime... A Real Gem...

To start off, The animation is pretty decent for a 2005 anime. Character design and all were good. Nothing to complain about. Sounds were good as well. Seiyuus did a Good job. The song at the end was a good choice of a song. Especially, the lyrics which is connected with the anime...

Now. What makes this anime a True Gem is because of its Amazing & Unique Storyline. Technology has advanced in this time period, & a Robot, Suzu is in the process of becoming a boy called Ryou. By being inserted Artificial Memories of Ryou, his personality starts developing and changing.

Meanwhile, he meets a girl, Hotori. The Exact Opposite of Suzu. She is a human with an illness, losing her memories slowly...

As time passes, they get to know each other better. & more thoughts and opinions are seen. It's Amazing to see how much Memories can Affect one's Life & Personality.

& The characters were pretty young & already facing such Deep Problems. The Characters were well-made in their way. Character development of Suzu can be seen, & the Revealing of Hotori's thoughts about her losing her memories were interesting.

The only flaw about this anime i could think of was... How could Suzu, a robot cry? & How could a robot like him have a personality & even Feel Feelings? We all know that robots can only be programmed to do things. They Can be programmed to feel & think, but then again, "feeling a warmth in one's heart" is something that i don't think a robot can ever achieve. So this was one of its plot holes. But then again, It's forgive-able.

Overall, I Really Enjoyed the way the story was told, The way the story unfolded itself, & the way the story ended in a Sweet way. This was Definitely a Good 40 minute Show. & I'm Sure it would be Even Better if it was longer, like a movie. Because 40 minutes was seriously too short for such a Deep Storyline that Makes you Think Deeply.

I Definitely Enjoyed the 40 minutes. & Only wished that this could have lasted more, so the impact of the emotions would be Greater. But then again, The Ending was Really nice. & I'm satisfied. =)

If you're searching for an anime with a deep meaning, with a touching storyline. This Short 40 minute Anime will Definitely do a Decent Job... =)

This is a short anime which is really quite a good anime. A story of euthanasia-robots and humans. It works well and for 40 mins the story is short but very well done.

Hotori - Tada Saiwai no Koinegau explores what makes humans human - is it enough that memory is transferred over robustly, or is there still another element that dictates behavior? While it doesn't really go through this topic in detail, it explores the relationship of two people who have opposite problems. 1) A robot boy who is meant to replace a couple's lost son has memories gradually implanted into him 2) A human girl who is suffering from a degenerative disease and loses her memories. Essentially, we watch the boy grow and develop his own personality despite the fact that he has memories aritificially implanted.

From a critical point of view, this anime is just mediocre - the story has gaps, the characters are pretty unidirectional in development... But in just 40 minutes, the interaction between the characters between the boy and the girl has been developed to the extent where you can feel just a bit of sorrow for what happens in the end.

Overall, this anime is different than most in that it deals directly and solely about humanistic attributes and interpersonal relationships. It has a pretty sweet story with sympathizable characters (because they're just so young and still new in the world and yet have such a tragic life already). I would recommend watching this 40 minute episode just for something different than all the rest.

This may be one episode long only, but they've managed to sqeeze in so much meaning into just 40 minutes. It's unlike all the other movies or anime that deal with AI and human interactions, because it's more about internal acceptances and realizations.

This anime may not stand out among all the flashier ones out there but it certainly isn't less entertaining. Some may find it difficult to bear with the lack of action, but it's worth it, because the story is just so good!

After watching it, I feel more insightful and wiser, somehow. This anime's really elucidative and enlightening, with sadness, melancholy and a happy-ish ending all mixed in one. The characters played a great part in conveying this understanding, because though they were kids they were so mature. Their words were very thought-provoking and meaningful, so I commend the script's excellence (haha award-winning, I see). On the other hand, it might've been better if they didn't use children as protagonists, because the two main characters have a level of maturity that I cannot relate to kids.

I enjoyed this anime even though it's not very 'flashy' as I stated before. I'm glad I stumbled across it and I recommend it to those who are tired of empty, shallow hare-brained storylines feebly hidden behind loads of action scenes. You'll find solace in watching this. =)

What a gem! This is good SF -- good short fiction of any kind -- and a moving drama. The relationship between the boy android who is becoming human and the human girl who is losing her memories casts sad and beautiful echoes through all of our human life. The animation is just serviceable, but the voice acting brings the great story to life. How must the amateur writer feel to have Kawasumi Ayako star in his first anime. Sugoi ne!

I for some reason enjoyed this clip more than I thought I would. It is only a 40 minute feature, but I enjoyed it very much ^_^.

The Good:
-Short and to the point. I didn't feel like they were extending it.
-It had a consistent storyline. The story was told at a steady pace.
-There was meaning in the story. It wasn't just a typical story.
-Nice soundtrack

The Bad:
-The animation didn't look AS nice as a lot of 2005 anime
-As a result of it being only 40 minutes long, there really wasn't much time to present anything really amazing. It could have if it was longer (probably its major downfall).

A really good feature. Check this one out. You wouldn't want to miss it.

This is truly mesmerising! It may last 40 minutes but for that short duration it squeezes so many things that it truly deserved the awards it took. Though I didnt know about the awards before I watched it.

It is of the few animes that make the viewer think but also rouses his feelings. I found the ending to be a little simplistic and very improbable.. But this is a 40 minute movie so there's not much time to explain philosophical and techical issues to the viewers. So the ending was most befittingly chosen. I agree with the previous reviewer that this could make quite an impression as a longer movie (provided the producers didnt mess up). About making it a series I'm not so sure it would succeed.

A true gem! A brillant and heartwarming anime with a mesmerizing story that bring question about the essence of existence whanever is human or AI with lot of depth, an innovative perspective and outstanding characters. Fans of Serial Experiment Lain or Key The metal Idol should like this one, even if it's not as majesticly chaotic and twisted. The only sad point with HOTORI is that it's a one shot OVA: It would had made a superbe TV series or OVA longer series.
