This movie makes me want to cry. It had such an ingenious and interesting premise and a good beginning... and then they completely and totally fucked it up with the middle and end.

Let me talk about the beginning first. It just blew me away from the start. And I mean that in a good way. The opening music kicked ass and beginning a movie with the total destruction of the moon by giant trees and leafy dragons that proceed to descend on the earth and wipe out civilization... just awe-inspiringly badass. Then we cut to a few hundred years later. The plants and forests of the earth have apparently been infected by an alien life-form that turned all the forests of the world into a giant sentient being which is capable of defending itself. To further its own growth, it has absorbed or taken control of nearly all the freshwater on earth. All land is either desert or deep jungle. Our story begins in a village of people living in the ruins of an ancient city, who have negotiated peace with the forest by allowing their leaders to become infected with the forest's organism.

From there it follows a boy named Agito as he accidentally stumbles upon an underground shelter where people from the disaster in the beginning were put in stasis and apparently left there. He accidentally released a girl from there and brings her back to the village.

It goes on from there and does a fair job of introducing a small supporting cast and describing the conflict of the story. Eventually, the girl goes and joins forces with a major city which is at war with the forest (in which, it seems they must constantly drop nukes outside their borders to prevent being overtaken). She Has decided to help them eradicate the forest and restore the earth to its natural state. To stop her, Agito asks to become infected the forest's organism (which apparently grants superhuman strength and agility at the eventual cost of one's humanity and mind). His infection is proceeded by a fight scene where he beats down a group of walking tanks.

From this point on the movie is shit. The villain is shallow and unsympathetic. The girl behaves like an idiot and becomes less sympathetic by the minute. Agito begins screaming the girl's name which becomes his only line repeated over and over again for about thirty minutes. And the entire supporting cast is dumped. And It turns out that the cool forest-dragon-alien-thing is actually a genetic engineering experiment on the moon that went wrong. Oh, and, by the way, the weapon with which the villain intends to eradicate the the planet-wide forest-like creature that ripped the moon to shreds and wiped out human civilization... the weapon is a giant walking tank carrying a volcano on its back. That's right: a walking volcano. WTF?!

The ending is a little better. The last fight is kind of cool. It would have been better if Agito had actually died.

Actually, once you've seen it, pretty freaking hilarious, but nothing can redeem that ginormous let down I experienced the first time I watched it. You might just want to watch up to the first fight scene, stop there, and just imagine how well the story could have gone.

I'm always a little more lenient on feature films than OVA's or TV series. Gin-iro no Kami no Agito follows the trend of superior scene direction, far superior animation, and more sophisticated sound of an anime feature film. Sadly, relative to other feature films, animated or not, the story is not well developed at all, and while the characters can be cute and functional, the main character is unspeakably bland and empty. Gin-iro no Kami no Agito is plenty enjoyable, just not necessarily for its story or characters.

Agito lives in a village caught between a steam punk country and a creepily prophetic and violent forest. The two are mortal enemies, and conflict is on the horizon. The spark of this conflict is a girl Agito found and woke from her deep sleep for who knows how many years. The two develop feelings for each other and somehow find themselves in the center of the conflict.

The concept is in the vein of the new fad, fantasy-sci-fi. That's not to say its totally unoriginal though. The main problem is that the actual development of the story is uninteresting. Neither does the love story pull through, nor is the epic aspect all that engaging. This movie isn't without its memorable scenes, one of which is in the first few minutes, where Agito and his friend go to steal water. It can be playful in its portrayal of the everyday lives of the characters, or it can be dramatic in its action oriented scenes. The central plot line isn't first rate, and its ending is contrived, predictable, and corny.

One disappointment was the love story. Its developments were sudden, uninteresting, and not in anyway touching or dramatic. But the biggest contributing factor to the lameness of the story is Agito's bland character. He's not all that quirky for the most part, but in the second half of the movie, his mind becomes completely one track, and he loses any characterization he had. The rest of the cast isn't anything special, but the whole thing feels strangely cute, especially for an epic.

Despite its lackluster concept, story and characters, its visuals should not be taken lightly. Both the forest environments and the mechanical city environments are depicted with plenty of atmosphere. The colors are plentiful, and outstanding, but not in a way that's glaringly bright. "Rich" would be a good way to describe it. The character designs are tastefully complex (they don't have physically impossible hair styles, but they do wear elaborate, yet suitable clothing), and the character animations are fluid.

This is undoubtedly a feature film quality work. It just ain't special.

It's a movie where you should only watch it once. If you're really into sceneries, i'd still suggest Studio Gibli or any other Miyazaki films.

For a Gonzo Feature Film production, I had a lot more expectation out of it. It has potential and good idea behind it, but due to bad storytelling, character arc, or probably even bad directing. The film end up as a big flop.

It has been some time since I found an animated movie to be so unwatchable. A pity because animation by Gonzo was topnotch and some scenes were worthy of a 2006 title.

I by no means prevent viewers from watching this title since it has some features (technical mainly) viewed only in few anime movies.

But regarding the pacing I lost interest around the middle and I was anxiously waiting for the movie to finish and I actually skipped some of the last minutes.

Unfortunately Gonzo will make 1 good and 10 bad titles and such is the case here.

Characters were a big letdown. I've seen similar characters many times. The ending was good but till to get there I had lost my patience. If this was one of my first animes I'd have liked it more.

Good movie to watch if you dont have any better titles, but if you expect it to be different than the typical Gonzo you'll be left dissapointed.

If you like enviromental animes give it a look.

My rating does reflect only my personal opinion and not the animes actual quality.

Overall an enjoyable anime. the animation is very good and the only part that I could fault is that some CG/Rendered shots are used occassionally which I dont think blended well in places with the anime. Music-wise I loved the soundtrack for this.

The characters themselves are slightly 1 dimensional unfortunately and the storyline itself I thought was very unsublte. Basically from the very beginning it hits you over the head with the Tech vs Nature debate.

Still I enjoyed it and would recommend watching it for the score and animation alone.

If Greenpeace had an anime this would be it. The story is about connecting humans and forsest, not thats a bad thing, though its not really good at all.
Gonzo are good for two things, mostly its the graphics, and the sound. Aside from that the story could be a hit/miss. Its worth the watch, and it feels like any Disney movie to me with a very Disney ending.
