TIDE-LINE Blue is a story full of mystery, 2 warring sides and natural resources scattered about the globe. Unfortunately by the end of the series, little is known about many of the main characters, those beloved resources or the people fighting to get them. TIDE-LINE Blue could have been more, but it settles for less.

I had high hopes for TLB. After watching the first episode I thought it was going to be an anime focused on warfare and strife, and to a degree it achieved that, only to destroy itself with unnecessary characters and a slow plot.

Poor Tide-line Blue. It just doesn't have an idea what it wants to do. I'd be really curious to find out what the makers of the show intended it to be.

When TLB starts I thought it was comedy. Then it was serious politics and war. Then it was comedy again. Then serious. Then comedy etc. This could have been a good series of post-apocalyptic drama if the series would have taken itself seriously. It's not that there's no trying. The main character really developes through the series but I couldn't see him as anything else but as the clown he spends most of the time. He has problems with his brother Teal, that much is made clear early on but since the reason for this wasn't explained until much later, I felt really annoyed of Keel's behaviour toward him. Would they have cut a few flashbacks around episode 10 and put them in episode 2, I could've been much more tolerant. The big guy of the series, Gould, is vague too. Heck, he has a nice dual character but since I couldn't get any grip of his motives, he was left out cold. Aoi, the big woman, is much more straight-forward but ultimately because of this, boring. Tesla is the only bright spot of the cast. Not that surprising because she's the spirited happy character that sees the good in every situation and doesn't hold grudges. And as the final blow on the cast, there's the ostrich. That quacking pile of feathers should have gone to stew after the first episode. Is there someone who thinks it's funny? Aoi perhaps, because that is the only reason explaining her decision "yeah, let's take this big bird with us in this small and cramped helicopter and not eat it".

The story isn't much better than the characters. As said above it has good potential of a good political drama but doesn't use it. From time to time it feels like the scriptwriters have written themselves in a corner and need to create some sudden and weird twists. Most notable of these are the second appearance of Dola Whira and the tight security of the New United Nation's base. The worst part is that the story doesn't seem to lead anywhere on the big scale. Between the brothers progress is made but considering the whole planet, all the tension and fighting amount to nothing. When episode 12 ended I was sure there was going to be more episodes because then ending was so ridicilous. But no good, all I was left was an immense feeling of disappoinment.

Animation looks good even if submarine battles aren't visually the most impressive ones. Most notable minus of this department is ridiculous design of Keel. Maybe it's there to illustrate his ridiculous character. I actually thought he was she when I first saw the intro. At least the animation puts enough energy to his movements. Sound... taking into account that most of the voices give me headaches and that the soundtrack is as incoherent as series' changes between serious and comedy, I can't say this show earns any points on that.

A lot of potential and zero execution. That mostly sums up this series. With some more episodes the story might have had time to delve more on the political aspect and make it actually interesting. Now it's just silly story of the maturing of one annoying character.

Mostly forgettable series, featuring some poorly-thought out pap sci-fi, a lot of simple morality play material, and some atrociously obnoxious characters.

The animation is harmless enough; a bit on the boring side but it is all cleanly and attractively done. Sound is a rather schizophrenic affair, with the usual dramatic orchestral/piano tracks offset by bizarrely out-of-place wacky banjo "that pig's on the loose!" hoedowns for the painfully-bad slapstick segments.

Main character Keel would appear to be knock-off of Ed from Full Metal Alchemist, with some silly faux-gay '80s vest & leather pants outfit. But his outfit is hardly the worst of the package. Keel ranks high on the all-time list of "scream/bellow first, think never" hot-headed and impetuous protagonists. Of course, these types are usually tolerated (when sympathetic characters) because they have a better, well-meaning side. Unfortunately, Keel is almost entirely lacking this crucial part of the archetype, meaning that for every sensitive moment that might win him sympathy with viewers, he does absolutely nothing of concrete value to deserve such sympathy. In the end, we are left with pure hot air; a character who spends all his time shrieking angrily at the top of his lungs and ignoring the reason of his supposed foil love-interest. It is impossibly tiring.

A half-hearted attempt to illustrate different political philosophies regarding warfare is made, which doesn't really end up saying a whole lot. The entire production is so short that there is no time for any significantly complex storytelling, not that there are many signs they would have attempted it anyways. The finale and its accompanying message are stupid, patronizing and unrealistic.

Worst of all is an utterly inexcusable ostrich that would seem to be an attempt to introduce slapstick. Unfortunately, the writers were not intelligent enough to understand that even slapstick requires actual humor to be effective. Instead we are left with the squawking, obnoxious equivalent of a turd in your bedsheets; an ill-natured prank best left to your enemies, not your unsuspecting audience. It's somewhat symbolic of the production as a whole. It might have started out well-meaning, but in the end, the only result is revulsion.

I like Tide-Line Blue story. It got potential to be a really complex and with a touch of good animation it will be the best. But the character animation didn't excel enough and they doesn't really want to explain what happen with hammer of eden. Since story ain't complex and animation not interesting, the series too a turn into a simple easy going with mild excitment when they battle with battleships and submarines. Everything looks cool except character which little sloppy but I guess it suit in the time period. Having focus on shaddy character kinda annoy me, girl and baby doesn't really bring out the kindness in both of the main char. Lastly... the ending does not include anything and it seem everything once again turns back to the starting line. Nothing accomplice.. atleast not yet, but it give out good hint for sesquel.

Visuals:
This anime is quite a visual treat. The first two episodes especially blew me away with their extravagance. I'll start with the positives: the exquisite colours, lighting and artwork - all are exceptional and very vibrant. The design of the world and surrounding environments also contain lots of obvious care and thought, and have been expertly crafted. The 3D animation is excellent - silky smooth movement and good shaping. The negatives (in terms of visuals) come in form of: the 2D animation, which is erratic - sometimes wonderful, sometimes lacking, and never quite consistent; the detail on both the 2D and 3D stuff - there is a noticable lack of close-up details amongst the visuals which I deem worthy to mention; and lastly (the most minor flaw), the style of the visuals - there was never really a point where I felt comfortable with the visual style, as it never had any real consistency. The first two episodes especially seemed very different from the rest. Even though I've laid bare some faults with the visuals, I must stress that these are very, very minor compared to the strengths, but yet I feel are worth mentioning.

Sound:
The opening and closing themes are pretty decent - I would not consider them awesome, but definately nothing negative to be said about them. The voice acting is done really well, with decent voice actors being used. The effects are the main strengths of the sound - the foreground noises and background ambiance add really well to the overall feel of the anime, and enhance the atmosphere well. The musical score is where I have my main point of complaint - some of the main musical themes became really irritating (especially the dramatic piano melody) and I felt they didn't necessarily compliment the atmosphere of their respective scenes at times.

Story:
The story is essentially an adventure story, but a decidedly average one. I didn't particularly find it too contrived or anything, and the main premise of the story seemed to be interesting enough, but it flowed rather dully. More than a few times I found myself losing interest at the what was going on, and when I finally got excited at a particular possibility in the story, it didn't deliver too well. As far as I understand, the nature of war is pretty extravagant, but the series in my opinion didn't show this too well. After the 2nd episode, I was never on the edge of my seat when there was an "action" scene for the rest of the series. Finally, I felt there were a few plot holes surrounding some of the characters (see below). The story was executed adequately, but just not well.

Characters:
Overall the characters were ever-so-slightly below average in my personal opinion. There was a lack of explanation for a lot of the characters - particularly Gould and Aoi, whom I can't rationally explain the behaviour of. Whilst I readily accepted all of the characters as plot-advancers, I didn't not necessarily like them. I found Tean to be contradictory - a hardened marine, who turns soft and pathetic a bit too easily. Isla, who had a HUGE lack of backstory, I actually liked as a character, along with the two Keels (even though the grown one is a very typical brash lead male character). In general however, I found it odd how the adults with good intentions end up being portrayed as "wrong" and that it's up to the kids with naive ideals to fix the mess and reign supreme. Oh and lastly, I hate the ridiculous ostrich.

Value:
I would be tempted to give this another watch-through, if only for the first two episodes (which are marvelous). However there are plenty of other anime out there with better replay value.

Enjoyment:
I feel this anime series is overall pretty average. It certainly has it's flaws but has enough strengths to give it some substance. I enjoyed it enough to see it all the way through, but at times felt as though I could be doing better things. Still, the first two episodes at least, were really, really good.

I had to give this a review, because someone bashed it for nothing happening, after only watching 3 episodes. This series looks very interesting, but you can tell that it isn't going to be a top of the line anime. It's got an interesting story, but it looks like it will be rushed, and the characters already seem like they are standard overused characters, or very one dimentional boring ones. This series has potential to be good, but I doubt it will be great. I think people who like adventure or sci fi anime should defintely check this one out, because at least it's entertaining.

Having watched two episodes of this series, I am a little hesitant. There is nothing bad about this anime; so far it has a lot of things that would usually interest me. Action, plot, drama, the characters are charming...but there is something that gives the show an atmosphere I don't completely like. It feels different to the ordinary shounen anime, which shouldn't be bad, really, so perhaps it's just something I personally feel.

Do try to check it out yourselves because despite that, I think this series might appeal to some. And I will continue to watch too, because there is potential and I hope a few more episodes will make me more interested.

after 3 episodes of this i just couldnt handle anymore!

NOTHING has happened.. a girl has a baby, some brothers hate eatch other... occasionally some random things happena nd some intense glances..there is an annoying badly judged comic relief-otrich... the main character is annoying... all the other characters all seem really miserable leaving the upbeat "oh i hate my twin brother" hero to seem really out of place wearing what can only be described as some mid 80s amateur theatre costume... the character designs are rubbish, the music is out of place, and worst of all the series schizophrenic nature is just plane annoying...for instance in the first ep we get character introductions leading you to believe its some kind of comedy with a preganat girl with her "wacky" ostrich..then all of a sudden things start exploding all over the place and itys all dramatic... then even worse than that NOTHING happens for the next two episodes... for a 13 part series youd expect more to happen... what a waste of bandais money

dont watch this!

*REVISED*

oh how wrong i was..after a massive droughts in fansubbed shows i am watching i decided to revisit shows id dismissed...and tide-line blue wa sone of them.... oh how i was wrong...see above...it is not nearly as awful as i once said and the characters and story are better than i thought.... its nothing special but rather watchable... i still stick by what i said about the heroes outfit and the damn annoying ostrich though!
