This is one of the deepest experiences an anime can ever convey. It's target audience consists of people who have made the oft-painful transition between childhood and adulthood that we refer to as adolescence, or youth. If that does not sound like you, then you will probably not enjoy this series and that is truly a shame. I must say this, be prepared to bring a part of yourself to this anime, because this experience can only be as deep as the viewer watching it.

Note: This review is for both Hachimitsu to Clover and Hachimitsu to Clover II.

"When I was still little... One day, riding the green bike I always used to ride, I thought "How far can I go without turning back?". I wonder what exactly I was trying to do at that time..."

Hachimitsu to Clover is one of the most surprising animes I have ever seen. Despite being from slice of life comedy romance, my least liked, genre, it not only managed to entertain me a great lot, but cut its way up to my favourites. The main highlight of this show is without question - it's characters and their high level dialogues. Actually characters in this show are so deep and multi-layered that it made me wonder if I even know anyone as deep as them in the real world. Every single one of them questions their purpose in life, their existence, the whole meaning of life and so on. Furthermore they always analyze the present flow of events, at the same time giving new insights and realizing new things about themselves. Most of the philosophical questions behind human actions aren't given a concrete answer, as it of course depends on the individual, but this show packs hundreds of hints and lets the viewer to arrive at his own conclusions for most of these questions. Plot itself though, is not really special, it basically revolves around the group of art university students, who simply try to finally overcome the barrier between adult and child. And that barrier is sure much more complex than I could have thought, of course, it depends on the complexity of the individual as well.

Hachimitsu to Clover is a must watch for anyone interested in anime, despite of any genre preferences. It's an anime sitting on the top of its peak. Actually if you have disliked Hachimtsu to Clover I'd suggest changing the form of entertainment media, as this show basically packs everything what a real anime should.

Animation: it was very detailed, nice light-shadow contrasts. Overall, good animation, except these silly looking comedical faces.
Sound: nothing impressive, although time after time it could be seen that the secondary details such as the wheel spining sound was included.
Story: there were parts of interest when the story depiced other than the main character, Takemoto, almost every time the story depicted Takemoto, the flow fo the events became annoying because of his winny-wainy, depressive personality combined with the notion "I just need to sit, whine and everyone will come to support me".
Character: it was enjoyable to see that everyone had their own agendas, thoughts and good/bad personality traits. It would have been very good if the producer of this anime would have had concentrated not much on the constantly depressing, goody-goody looking, always getting the best share with least work main character, Takemoto, on other characters who looked much more mature and interesting in their trait of thoughts and actions.
Value: I would not want to see the Takemoto character ever again. Therefore, this whole anime as well.
Enjoyment: there were enjoyable moments, such as the relation strings between Yamada, Mayumi and Rika, but it was only the glimpse in whole anime, forshadowed by Takemoto character.

There are very few anime that I've seen that I think to myself afterward, "I could watch that again right now." However, Honey and Clover by a wide margin makes it into that category. The first episode in particular is one of the best.

Basically the story follows the lives of a few college students as they work on projects, search for jobs as they near graduation and work out the difficulties presented by love.

It excellently mixes comedy with a college slice of life and romantic undertones. The style of art for the show fits nicely with the art and architecture students it focuses on, as well as adding to the very realistic presentation of the whole show. I found the show really seemed to grasp life as an art student well while keeping things light and upbeat. The only criticism I can think of is that the subtitles for the background song lyrics could be difficult to read while following the narrative.

Every once in a while you'll happen across an anime that's just too perfect for words....that's not to say that this “perfect” anime is perfectly suited for everyone or even that just about anyone is able to discern or appreciate such perfection. Thusly, if one should find himself shuddering at the mere prospect of an anime that deals with “feelings” then this one is not for you, likewise if an eye twitches or you're fighting the urge to barf or even if one corner of your mouth is upturned with scorn, then Honey and Clover ain't for you.

However, this anime, Honey and Clover, was in all sense of the word a perfect anime to me. Not since Fruits Basket has there been an anime series that has perfectly captured such bittersweet emotions and effortlessly relay or transfer them onto the viewer. This anime could hardly be considered thought provoking nor does it particularly revolutionize anything. This anime is simply an esoteric narration of “What is..” so either you'll get it and appreciate it or you won't.

Honey and Clover is an excellent and artistic 24 episode + 2 OVA comedy drama released in 2005, with an overall romantic backdrop.

The graphics and designs in Honey and Clover are very artistic. Although some character designs might be difficult to distinguish, the overall graphical quality is good. Animation wise, Honey and Clover features a lot of colourful and well animated backgrounds. Some character designs, when exaggerated, are also animated very well. Honey and Clover might not be ground breaking in terms of graphics and animation, but it is very nice and pleasant to look at.

The theme songs, and various other songs that occur throughout, are all very nice to listen to and fit in very well with the mood of the anime. The voice acting might seem out of place at first, but it is easy to get used to. The background music, like the songs, complement the scenes well.

The storyline of Honey and Clover is definitely most impressive. It combines comedy and drama in such a way that viewers will be thrown from one emotion to the next in a matter of seconds. Some view Honey and Clover as a love romance, but if that's the case, it would be described as a tragedy. As a drama, it is entertaining and very engaging to follow, with some excellent humour. Honey and Clover concludes very promptly, leaving plenty of open plot lines, to be covered in the sequels to follow. The 2 episode long OVA revisits a number of events that occurred in the main storyline and develops them to some extent, which can be very rewarding for fans of the series. The storyline of Honey and Clover will make many viewers longing for the second series, and quite rightly so.

A storyline cannot be successful without a cast of first class characters. Although there aren't many characters in Honey and Clover, the few that do appear are developed very well. Thanks to good voice acting, the characters in Honey and Clover are easily relatable to people in real life. The personalities of the characters are also extremely unique and presented in an easy to understand and effective way. The OVAs also help with character development, making the cast of Honey and Clover outstanding to watch.

Overall, Honey and Clover is definitely worth watching for its storyline and characters. It contains a number of genuinely hilarious moments, which will turn into some of the most tragic in a blink. People who enjoy comedy, drama, romance, or a mixture would enjoy Honey and Clover, and I would recommend all anime viewers to at least check it out.

"Honey and Clover" is about university age people, their anxieties, their issues, their experiences, their first love, their friendship, their uncertainties.

The two main issues the characters in H&C face are love and personal discovery. The first I've seen a lot on TV dramas, but the second, not so much.

H&C excels in characterisation. The story is at times told in a reflective mood by some of the characters, much like reading a diary. This gives the anime a more soothing and personal feel, as if the audience too, is experiencing the same emotions.

I can identify with Takemoto the most, recalling my confusion and fear for an unknown future. The "wheel" that constantly appears in the story signifies life. The last part of the story where Takemoto goes on a self-discovery journey is especially touching. Watching him gives me strength to face my own personal problems.

The issues that the characters face don't get solved at the end of the anime. The resolution comes in the second season of H&C. Everyone is somewhat at a crossroad in episode 24, though the air has cleared somewhat as each character comes to grasp a part of themselves.

Finding out the motives behind your actions. Finding out the destination and purpose of your lives.

H&C offers no answer, but certainly some practical insights into the path of self-discovery that all of us have, or will eventually go through.

I, Davindo, AKA Over 120 Anime Seen, say that Honey and Clover at points reaches the highest level an anime can reach, while at other times throws the viewer into complete boredom. Like the 2nd series after it, this series is too long. The beginning especially is painfully slow and it takes a very long time to warm up to Takemoto (even though you eventually will), who sadly takes up a lot more time then the coolest, and character that is most fun: Morita. With that said, some of the monologues are so deep and moving they just blow your mind, and I even posted some of the quotes on facebook, and if you knew me, you would know that, that meant a lot :). Here’s a semi-spoiler\not really question in the anime that is an example to me of deep insight:
“Is it more painful to cry when you can't do something you want to, or when you can't find what you want to do?”, find in the anime where that is ;).
It is very easy to connect to these monologues when the viewer him\herself is also searching and unsure what they want to do. Also it should be said that the second part of the anime is almost completely separate from the first part, and it, along the monologues, make the whole thing worth watching. The humor and overall level of the anime is just raised, I especially like the dog :), and the story actually moves forward from the standstill of the first, say 14\15 episodes. The last episodes are definitely WOW, and if the whole series was at this high of a level, it would probably one of my favorites of the over 120 I’ve seen.

I had a really hard time finishing this anime, not because its bad, but because anime is my daily escape from reality, and because this show was reminding me of crap i had going on that i didnt want to deal with, i only ever got through one.. maby two episodes at a time.
____________________________________

ANIMATION:
This is some of the best and worst animation i have ever seen. I can say that i really love the style, and i really love how it was done and put together... i mean a story about art students had better have good animation right? well everything was good, but the character designs bugged me a bit at times. almost every character has an abnormally wide mouth... picture an ear to ear smile and thats their mouths pretty much... i still love the animation, and i must say that they had one of the most entertaining opening sequences of any show ive ever seen.

SOUND:
Well now, i really liked the sound and i thought the voice actors were perfect. The show also featured half a dozen different in show songs which is impressive, especially when it didnt detract from the atmosphere of the show but rather enhanced it. why does sound not get a 10? just because ive heard better sound tracks.

STORY:
Throughout this story the main character, takemoto, asks himself "how far can i go without turning back" and eventually goes out to find out who he is. This show also contains a few love triangles which got me a little too emotionally involved at times because i could relate soo well. it was really wierd at times because i was soo drawn into the anime that i fealt like i was reliveing painfull memories in my life.. never mind that, i was just being EMO haha
honey and clover has a really good story that i believe most people could get into.

CHARACTER:
Some of the characters were believeable,, some were not. however i feel that each character served a purpose in the show to help make the story what it was. With the kinds of characters in the story, and how they acted at times,,, this story could only be told in an anime.
It seems to me that there were really five main characters those being: Hagu-chan, Ayu-chan, Takemoto, Mayama, and Morita.
These five characters all became close friends despite their very different personalities, and the story really revolves around them. there are also many support characters who while being static characters are still fleshed out faily nicely.

VALUE:
I really would like to watch this again someday, but i probably wont be doing that any time soon, unless one of my friends ends up watching it with me, which i find very unlikely.

ENJOYMENT:
This show is riot at times, silly and fun at times and completely serious at other times. It really put me through a lot of different emotions, happy and sad. I really enjoyed this show, but there i think i could have enjoyed it more if i had watched it at a different point in life

i SUPPOSE it's one of those love/hate anime. i happen to hate it.

a painfully boring anime. i ended up watching the WHOLE season straight. one of the worst nights of my life?

several episodes into the season i had already decided that if i didn't finish it that day i would never, ever finish this series and did not deserve to review this. and i really wanted to review it.

i'd never recommend this to anyone. i'd recommend that they stay away from it, though. the best parts were the comedy. the drama-romance parts did nothing for me.

Before seeing this anime, I had only been on a plane once. This flight was to Texas, which also happens to be the furthest I had ever traveled to the West. I had never left the country or even thought of it as something I would accomplish. However, last October I made plans to study in Australia. I put my right foot forward and looked toward what I always dreamed of doing. One could say it was something I had to do in order to figure out what I want to get out of life. While the experience of college is this for many, I couldn't help but think "What else is there?" when sitting in class in that upstate New York town. I didn't want to ask that question for the rest of my life without ever trying to find an answer.

Upon finishing Honey & Clover, I saw all of this in Takemoto. An art college student, unsure of his place in the world, on a journey of self-discovery. He may not have stayed the main focus throughout the whole series, but it is his voiceovers, struggles, and decisions that make the series so engaging. You are literally seeing a character with such relatable inner-battles transform into someone who can finally take control of his life, by coming of age through the realization of personal legends. More than ever before I wanted to achieve something for myself.

I am often emotionally touched by anime if it has a good story, but Honey & Clover brings it to a spiritual level. And that is rare. Maybe it came at just the right time in my life, but I've never been more moved by an anime than I was with this one. The profound script mimicked uncertain thoughts of my own mind, in that same boring yet charming town, with the group of friends who always meet once again, for better or for worse. Honey & Clover knows it is a slice-of-life anime and it does nothing to conceal this behind symbolic messages. Instead, it speaks directly to the audience, addressing issues one may be feeling, will feel in the future, or felt before but have since forgotten.

Your average slice-of-life/romance anime, except it TRIES to do something new but falls out somehow in the middle. The anime then tries to be clever by introducing motifs and ideas into the anime which are either too superficial or subtle for the average viewer to comprehend. In sweeter words, this anime fails ROYALLY.

This is definitely for the girls out there. It was MADE for girls. The plot and the characters were made to appeal to them. I'd go further but I'd start to stereotype.

If you are looking for an anime which contains comedy, romance and drama, anime, there are better titles out there. Don't waste your time (and money if you're thinking of buying the DVD set)

Let's just hope they don't make the same mistake again by making a Honey and Clover II. (Heh)

(Based on both seasons of H&C)

This anime is definitely NOT for everyone. I was drawn to this anime simply because of the overwhelming craze/awards/hype it was getting. A friend told me this anime had a girl in it that went beyond the Lolita look and was fancied by the male characters in the series and even though they where all 18+ of age it made him (and me at times) feel awkward.

At the end of the day I (unfortunately) have to agree with everyone else and say this is a very good anime show overall.

Animation

Animation was decent, character animation was different than casual anime with face shapes and stuff but the scenery was drawn beautifully, one of the major strong points of this anime. Ending scene was nice as well especially in first season.

Sound

Another shining point for the anime, Opening was a bit Up-tempo but nice (1st season). Character voices were perfect, everyone seemed to fit well even if it was annoying at times (Hagu). Generally the sound just fit very well with the flow of things.

Story

This is the difficult part. I said earlier this anime isn’t for everyone that’s because with these “Real Life” type stories it comes down to what part of real life us (the viewers) want to see. Now this is definitely a drama/romance anime but I personally wouldn’t class this as shojo because it wasn’t girly at all. Yes I will say there is a soap-opera feel which can annoy at times but it is balanced quite well never going too “sunset beach” if you will. Every character had their own personal issues as well as love problems which mixed with their college life, work and ambitions. The most surprising part of this story is that it is spanned over a number of years so you see just how fast or slow life can change around you. In retrospect looking at this as a story it is quite well written and very realistic but some people might just find this as slow paced and eventless….well sometimes life can seem that way I guess.

Character

Characters are excellent. When I first watched this anime I was really pessimistic in thinking all these over reviewers where just being too nice or something. By the time I got half way through season one I noticed that the characters where quite mature and interesting. I felt a “School Rumble” type vibe from some of the characters especially Morita. These characters make the story what it is and I must say while some might annoy you with their problems (Ayumi) others will gain your respect (Takemoto).

Enjoyment

Enjoyment is not the right word for me more like Interest.
I did enjoy this anime to a point and im glad I watched it because this is the reason I watch anime, to enjoy a great story that will make me think. I guess I can understand now why this got such high praise.

Value

Value is probably the lowest point. Although this anime is a great story in itself I do admit I found it hard to watch most of the time. Maybe it’s because after a certain point I was more focused on some characters rather than others or maybe at times the love issues annoyed me. Either way, now I’ve watched it I can say it was a good story about people and the lives and choices they made but watching it again would definitely not happen for me.

In a way it just like real life once its gone there’s no going back.

Real life is hard to animate. Several anime have made attempts, but most have failed because the “realism” extends to setting alone or because the anime insists on recording every bland nuance that someone such as I can relate to. Real life is boring and Honey and Clover never let me forget it. Honey and Clover is a journal, chronicling the uninteresting lives of a couple of average and ordinary people. It’s supposed to be melancholy, subdued, and even heartbreaking, but it only turns out as mundane, monotonous, and dull.

If I were to judge Honey to Clover solely by its outrageous opening theme, I would have ignored the show completely. I delved into the anime further, however, to find that the story is nearly non-existent. Each episode begins nearly the same way: a group of college art students prepare for a social event and spend the rest of that episode shooting the bull. When this formula isn’t being executed, the show is either pushing half-baked comedy (mostly centering on Morita’s antics or the vapid interactions between the characters) or indulging in introspective monologue. To the anime’s credit, sometimes the comedy hits the mark (that Twister episode was hilarious), but most of the time, it…..doesn’t. Although full of thoughts that most anyone can relate to- unrequited love, disillusionment, and individuality- it is dryly executed. For example, Hagu should have been the most dynamic character (for all the other characters seem drawn to her), but she is never fully explored, and ends up as only the typically underdeveloped kid used for the occasional comic relief. Honey and Clover is not without merit, however. Mayama’s own unrequited love and his seemingly ambivalent cruelty towards Ayu is the best part of the series; and what’s more, the monologues (particularly Takamoto’s) are excellent.

Because Honey and Clover relies on the charisma of its characters, if the characters fail to draw in the audience (in this case, me) then the entire anime will fall on its face. Takamoto, despite his excellent monologues, is a bland narrator and an even blander protagonist; his journey of self-discovery didn’t reach me, and this because is character is just so dry. Morita, easily the best character in the series, is used (for about half the series) as a zany way to make you laugh. It is obvious that there is more to him than meets the eye, but the anime never gave me an idea of what the hell is going on inside his head. The other characters really aren’t worth mentioning; they’re either too zany, too dry, or too cute. And if they are none of the above, they disappear in the middle of the show.

Honey and Clover is not a great anime; it is a decent one that manages to have the occasional great moment. This seemingly practiced shoujo is lacking in many areas, and in the end, the anime is very much like reading a book in which there are pages upon pages of dull material….yet the final paragraphs are always excellent and worth reading.

Such a lame series. I did see season 2 also but I'll review just this season here. So, the first time I started watching this I stopped after ep1, realizing how lame it was. Later my friend pressured me so I just watched it all. Trend from ep1 didn't change; the whole thing ended up being a waste of time. I spent a lot of time in 2x and 4x speed ripping through all the crap in the series. Ppl always say "ooh you missed the nuances, couldn't understand it" and such and such, but look when series are bad then I start cranking up the speed to just get them done with. Good ones I'm careful to respectfully watch in 1x.

I'll get into specifics in the other fields. Overall I say if you're cool then avoid this series like the plague. If you're artsy fartsy or something like that maybe you'll like it for its creative value or something something. Sound sucks, animation sucks, story's stupid, everything bad here guys. Go for shounen, mecha or ecchi for entertainment.

As a last note, girls might somehow like this. But guys plz look elsewhere. I will def display a guy's bias in this review.

Life is a complex road of convoluted turns and undulating hills. You ride, walk, run along it at your own pace, taking in the senses and experiences that the journey gives you. So what happens when you come a the fork in the road? You're forced to make the decision on which path to travel, without the insulation of a barrier if you make the wrong decision. If you hit a wall, it's going to hurt you, just like making choices and assuming the responsibilites that come with traveling along that path. If you fall, you can either allow yourself to cry or stand up and start traveling again. The question that might be in people's minds is: how and when do you become cognizant of these responsibilities...and what do you do afterwards?

People say that you face life's challenges only after your education, and that college is the stepping point before going into the real world: I actually disagree. Your education is living/life itself as well, not simply the institution of education. You're always learning no matter where you go or what you do. As you love, you learn the consequences and responsibilities of maintaining, making and breaking relationships. As you live, you assume responsibilities of fending for yourself and perhaps even taking care of people that you love. As you age, you realize that there's a road behind you of all the dreams that you made reality or were left in the broken realms of your mind.

College might actually be the point where many people realize that reality has been with them the whole time, where one becomes conciously aware of needing to have a path to travel. Even without direction, it's clear that not having a place to go gets old fast....and that the heart of your very existance yearns for a place to belong and a road to travel by.

In all respects, Honey and Clover prides itself in the fact that it's the journey of several characters: primarily Mayama, Ayu, Hagu, Takemoto, and Morita, in their journey through the art college they attend. They struggle in their aims to make a living, through exhilarating highs and depressive lows, through laughs among friends to tears as lovers, through rewarding experiences and jarring reality checks.

I have truly never seen a slice of life series as brilliantly done as Honey and Clover...so much that it really surprised me. It's the first series in a while I could identify with, and in terms of depicting a group of struggling college friends who find themselves intricately tangled in love, life, and lessons learned, it serves as a beautiful portrait, abeit simple, of the subtle tendencies of life in general. Granted, this isn't as much of a direct mirror of things in reality as it is a take on events to create its own reality, which mirrors issues that we face in our day to day lives.

Excellent animation, heartful characters that drive the story smoothly, and an exempilary soundtrack and voice acting on most points allow me to rank Honey and Clover as one of my new favorite series. Yet, even as a favorite, I would not recomment this series to all audiences, and I will attempt to point out areas of concern with regard to this series along those lines.

first off is the picture on animenfo. not exactly your coolest pic; it made me feel like this anime was some sort of shojo anime that revolved around over-cute characters and over sappy romance.

lets get this straight: honey and clover is one of the best animes i've ever seen, on par to elfen lied.

this anime excels on all fronts, especially the important parts, which i would deem as story and character. the characters in this are not only memorable but realistic; you can connect directly to the feelings of many of them, especially the narrator takemoto.

the story revolves around takemoto's self discovery and the meaning of life according to his view. there are, however, many side characters and their mini plots which are equally deep and thought provoking. in terms of animation, i've never seen such a strange/interesting animation style. it grows on you fast, and you'll never see anything like it.

i have never enjoyed an anime more than this one. the main reason is because of lack of ANY filler whatsoever, perfect execution, and EXTREMELY funny moments. in short, this is your perfect blend of romance / comedy/ slice of life.

funny when it needs to be and touching at other times. this anime is basically the same feel as suzuka, futakoi alternative, and theoretically KGNE. the reason why i say theoretically is cause KGNE is essentially the 'failure' version of this. KGNE becomes way too melodramatic and relies on cheap/over the edge tactics to make you cry. honey and clover, on the other hand, executes via pure genious and authenticity.

in short, this anime is amazing, and is definetely on my top list. hopefully, honey and clover II will continue to impress

Honey and Clover - the show where nothing noticable happens, I think. That's what it felt like for it's entirety, not that it's a bad thing. Filled with out-of-place interactions, running gags, and lovable characters, Honey and Clover gives all college-hopefuls a hopeful outlook on life, and the various things you can do to entertain yourself inbetween your studies.

First impressions gave me that this is a relaxed anime where nothing really happens, and that's exactly what it does. Over the course of three-four years (in 24 episodes - I know, freaking fast) and only over 3-4 major events each year, it showcases the life of several young college students and one teacher as they embark on a quest for self-realization, love, and career. Even with some misfortunes and unluckiness, the characters always seem to bounce back to their usual good mood, and yet the developments are there but extremely subtle. And for good reasons, too - people change over time, not in an instant. While mainly focusing on Takemoto, the rest of the cast gets equal coverage in their everyday lives and developments as well as their subplots, which interwine with each other into a complex web of connections where if something happens, it must affect every single other thing that it is connected to both directly and indirectly.

Really enjoyable anime, really. It's advised to take time with this anime, as rushing it won't do much for you. Recommended to all college/university-hopefuls to relieve the stress of studying.

This is one very good anime. This could be a good replacement for Fruits basket with more love story and comedy This really has a lot going for it. And there is a season 2 of this anime. For those who know what J.C.Staff does then this review is more about the company

Was it ever supposed to get this good?

I already know that anime's could be touching sometimes, but I never expected it to be this much more. I used to think that it isn't possible for mere drawings to be more dramatic than real live-action ones. But my views completely changed after watching this beautiful series. "Honey & Clover" is no doubt better than most dramatic titles out there, anime's or live-action ones, HnC still tops them in many aspects. It could be a "Romantic-Comedy" or a "Comedic-Romance", both aspects are equally very good, it's funnier than most comedies and more touching than most dramas.

I use to wonder what's the best "Shoujo" out there. I found out a couple of weeks ago and it's name is "Honey & Clover".
