Even though i have never played football in my life and have never known much about the sport, i liked this series. The animation is not outstanding but not too bad either and some of the characters even look like they came from looney toons or walt disney or something, but thats really how they look like anyway even in the manga. The actions in this series is not very realistic as well because ive seen NFL games before and i have never seen anyone running like sena does in the pro league, thats just too impossible, but i guess thats whats good about about sports anime i mean it works for hikaru no go, captain tsubasa, initial d and prince of tennis right? The soundtrack is not bad but i have my own favorites among the rest like "flower" and "blaze away". The story isnt very original and of course because what kind originality are you looking for? Are you playing to lose? Everybody wants to become the champion and almost every sport anime has that plot so dont watch sports anime if you want a different story. The characters are likable because of the humor they give and there is almost no boring episodes thanks to their comedy acts, however i dont like the kicker of deimon because hes full of excuses, and its also interesting to watch how the romance developed between sena-suzuna and hiruma-mamori although its quite hard to notice. Overall, this anime is one of my favorites even though at first i never knew anything about football and never really was interested, but after watching this i think i understand the game more and how it works.

Eye shield 21 is your usual sports anime. Take some obsessed children who have nothing on their mind but their favorite sport. Take the usual dream of reaching the nationals. And finally take a male lead character who is bullied in the beginning but somehow gains respect due to his ability in a particular sport.
WOW! Really refreshing!!! Isnt it?? The answer is: NO!!!

I have read the manga so far and i have to say that the story is really getting intense right now. But the anime is far away from reaching that point. The beginning is so slow and does not lead anywhere. Collecting members is a fine thing and training your weak points is acceptable but going on a 2000 km trip through the us is just the worst. I cant think of football getting popular due to this anime. Because its main critical point is the unrealistic feeling around it. The team captain is always armed and the parents of the team members dont care for their children who are away for the whole summer somewhere in the us. Damn who should buy this??? i know that its not meant to be a serious anime but it was too much for me.

The animation is not too great. Probably bit worse than Prince of Tennis but overall nothing worth of many words.
The same goes for the sound. I had to re-watch the opener just now to remember them. So it wasnt very catchy but somehow suited the plot.
What is most important for a sports anime?? Having strong characters. And Eye Shield 21 has some of them. They dont have important problems and their profile is not too deep but they all have their funny points like the ha brothers or the team captain.

Overall i did like this anime though i cant say that i have to see or read the end. For everyone who is stopped by the slow beginning: Keep watching!!! The story is getting better and better and some riddles are solved. Like, where does the name Eye Shield 21 come from?? Hope i increased your interest in this anime though i criticized it very hard.

Eyeshield 21 has some of the new, but in essence recycles a lot of old contents we have seen in previous sports anime series (ie: Prince of Tennis and Hajime no Ippo).

We start off with our main protagonist, Sena, who happens to look weak, but carries a hidden potential he doesn't realize. It sorta like the story favoring the underdog who rises to victory. Touching as it may be, the flavor of the anime dries out about episode 50. At that point it's all have the "been there, done that" feel. Rematch against old teams with the exposure to a few new ones, characters showing off their new flashy skills that barely have slight variations, and really predictable results with our main team, Deimon Devil Bats, being the victor (not really much a spoiler saying this because it's rather obvious).
Eyeshield 21 is not a bad anime overall. It relatively fun to watch if you're looking to pass the time; however, if you're a hardcore football fan, you'll probably shoot yourself. The actual anime itself has no sense of realism to the actual sport, though it does have brief 30s intermission in the middle of episodes to teach you some basics about football. But then again, if you're watching sport anime in replacement of real sports, I guess you're not hardcore in the first place.

In conclusion, I do find Eyeshield 21 entertaining. It experimented by applying football to an anime, which is innovative in it own ways. It's a good watch if you're looking to pass the time. You'll probably like it watching the first time through, but I doubt it'll leave any memorable aspects that would draw you to watch it a second time.

Well, I read the Manga from chapter one to the up to date (224). I got free time so i took a look
on the Anime. After i watched the first 20 episodes i was really disappointed. The sound, music, voice
actors and animation were worse then average. I read all the other reviews and i don't get it why the
rating is so high? Compared to the Manga the characters are very 1 dimensional (Quoted nauXolo for truth).
The story was stretched thats not a big deal but it got stretched in the wrong parts.
Why have they almost cut out all the funny parts? The scene in the hospital when sakuraba and the little boy are talking about
the nurse and the "poltergeist", at that moment the door lift and the stucked duo
(Sena & Monta) fell off with the squished present basket and really looked like dead.
Thats just one of the dozen hilarious moments
that were cut out, too much to count *sigh*. When you have read the manga there are so much scenes and details that will
disappoint you. One more example - Himura he kidnapped Monta and forced him to join, he made a bet with Zokugaku
the winner need to pay 5 Million Yen. Zokugaku lost and they haven't got even 1mio Yen, Himura suggested to strip down their bikes...
You know the rest from the pathetic anime version.

I'm still learning english so please forgive me my mistakes. I want to write more (for example i dislike the BGM and Senas MACH3 speed animation) but i'm not capable because of my lacking english skills.
One thing please read the manga, it's the time worse.

Ehm~ The American Football Clinic during the breaks was great.

It's your average sport anime. I suggest you try it if you want to know more about american football. It shows you the rules of the game as you continue watching episodes after episodes. I have to say that I appreciated the 2 seconds parody of Captain Tsubasa in the first episode. "Drive shoot!
Wakashimada(Wakashimazu in Captain Tsubasa)!"

i have to say that i really like this anime. its the most unrealistic thing i have seen so far. if you think prince of tennis is unrealistic when they do snake shots and son on watch this. they travel thousands of kilometers through the usa pulling a truck and they really have no other thougt except playing football.

the story is about a little boy that is always being protedted by an older girl. he get picked on and is saved by her. because he is bullied so often he learns to escape his enemies and becomes a very fast runner. when the captain of the football team notices that there is a very fast runner on his school he asks him to join his team. but sena, the little boy, refuses because the girl that always protects him shouldnt know about this. in the end he joins the team and the idea of the mysterious eyeshield 21 is created. nobody knows who eyeshield is except the team members.

i really like sports anime so this is a must for me. its funny in its own way and im looking forward to the followning eps.

Eyeshield 21 is a very simplistic sports anime about American Football in Japan. The main character is a very short, thin but very fast "typical" Japanese boy who for some random reason or another decides to whole heartedly take up American football after being forced to join the team. He meets a lot of weak and strong people along his way and his temporary goal is to become stronger than this one person, Shin.

Most of the comedy in here is kind of eccentric. It relies heavily on the fact that Sena's closest childhood female friend doesn't know he's this Eyeshield 21. It also relies on the Hiruma's kind of slave masterish role as a leader who does anything to win - as a result everyone else he meets along the way somehow get caught up into his own plans and ways of doing things. Not to mention he carries guns around for no good reason and just shoots them off without having any repercussion. Also, we have this baseball player turned football monkey whose favorite food is a banana... how exciting.

The characters in Eyeshield are very very 1 dimensional. Each character is given this basic unmutable personality. There is no such thing as character growth... and all the more so for the side characters. The childhood friend girl just HAD to be in there and she doesn't do anything except prevent this manga from being a "hot dog" fest (all guys only). The main character doesn't have any ambition except to get stronger (and for no good convincing reason). Indeed, the only improving is the "powering up" of physical strength in this anime. Still, that said - the silly and weird nature of every football player kind of gives this anime a certain weird character making this a "Quarter joke - threequarters sports anime".

At first Eyeshield 21 was very entertaining - watching Sena get stronger, meeting new (weird) people, playing in tournaments, traveling the country, but the shallowness of this anime fails to keep me engrossed for very long. I felt everything just went too smoothly for everybody. Sure they hiked 2000 km, but that felt so contrived and forced. Overall, Eyeshield 21 is a mediocre, predictable, and very repetitive sports anime whose only strength lies in this never-failing ordinary boy who has the legs of a legend (and its fancy animation).

i just don't get why some would dislike this anime..... i think eyeshield 21 is a very good show because of many factors which i will enumerate.

ANIMATION:
I really like the animation because it has a certain thing that i can't put into words which makes me not look away in each and every scene.

SOUND:
Sometimes the sound effects are good, sometimes bad. BUT, the opening song really pulled it up because i think the song is great. I even downloaded it :P

STORY:
The story is interesting because the flow shows the development of the team in each and every thing they go through.

CHARACTER:
This is where i would like to give props to the makers of this anime. I really enjoy watching these goofballs in each and every episode. my most favorite characters would be hiruma and Sena. and oh yeah, i read some of the reviews, the reason Hiruma can order around some of the other characters isn't because of physical strength, its because he blackmails them :D

pls watch this anime it rocks my socks hahahahaha :))

Animation is more often than not, just average. However, everything is smooth all of the time, which is important in a sports anime in keeping the flow of the match. I commend them for that. They really pull off great animation during key episodes.

The music is not the type that you will listen to on an OST, but it is very effective. The OP/ED is nice as well. Seiyuus aren't bad.

The story is extremely common and even short of ridiculous for the most part. Oh well.

Characters are your average sports cast. What else can I say. The main character is developed quite well though, so that pulls up the rating.

Even though it seems that this is just an average show, it is very enjoyable because of the directing. It had quite the potential to be a bad anime, but the script writers and director did a good job.

I've watched about 16 eps and I've immensely enjoyed the show, this is the second sports anime I've watched, previous being Prince of Tennis. If they don't drag it out too long, it should be a good anime.
I love the football info that they give in the middle of each ep, coming from an idiot's point of view, this is extremely helpful. And the way they blow out the proportions of each character's skills is just funny, because I do follow college football a bit. I've love to see the Devil Bats play against my school.
Nothing too exciting about the storyline, animation, sound, and characters, I would say it's kind of a typical storyline: a bunch of people with a common goal and the journey they take to achieve that (the Christmas Bowl in this case). But it has its goodside because Hiruma and Kurita are extremely entertaining, esp Kurita, he's just so adorable! And, it's extremely funny too.
Nothing extremely spectacular, but still worth watching. Be in for a good laugh or actually real info about how to play football.

after seeing 7 eps of this i must say i have NO idea why its liked so much. the animation is average and sound has nothing memorable about it. the bits where they show info on the rules of american football is cute but where this show fails is its character and story. this is my first time seeing a sports anime, and i sure hope the rest arent like this. taking the sport of football so seriously where they start giving the chars names like they were super heros is absurd. not the mention the "abilities" the characters gain make no sense. the characters themselves... are poor at best. each is very unique in his/her own right but are all influenced by the shows bully, who has controll over them for an absurd reason(hes not THAT physically imposing). show is boring(seeing a football game take over 3eps and have nothing but one person beating an entire team over and over the same way isnt fun). i'de say go elsewhere for a good laugh.

This is truly one of the better sports anime of the year. The animation is good and fluent. With the relatively fast pace of the anime, one definitely won't be bored. Characters are well-developed and Hiruma (though freaks me out) ROCKS! Sena rocks too!

Having read the manga, i can say tt the anime is following the manga loyally... This would definitely be a good watch for all, even for those who aren't sports anime lovers.

P.S. please do not be appalled by the fact that it's an anime on AMERICAN FOOTBALL.. it's definitely tamer than those real games... maybe you'll even grow on american football after watching! ^_^;

This anime is really fun to watch.
Nice combination of sports and comedy. Interesting plot and characters as well.

The plot is pretty cool, it's quite unusual, and funny. The main characters are really funny and unusual too, they're all different from each other, and yet they make a great team.

I've read the manga as well, and i think both are equally good. The animation is pretty good, and same goes for the sound.

I like the music for this anime as well, the opening theme is quite catchy.

Overall, this anime made a pretty good impression on me, it's definitely worth a watch, and the manga is worth reading as well.

I found this anime to be quite fun. It also follows the first rule of sports anime to a fault (the anime should teach the audience a little about the sport). Of course, considering that most Japanese probably have barely heard of American football, that's understandable.

This is not a sports comedy. More like a sports adventure with comedy, which can be somewhat unusual because most sports animes are comedies. That's not to say there aren't funny moments, because there are.
The characters are great fun, even the infamous "devils" in the story retain depth along with their ability to do unbelievably wild things.
Definitely worth a watch.

I checked out the first episode just to see, "what's up" with Eyeshield 21... and I must admit I'm hooked!

I've read a few volumes of the manga, and I love the storyline and characters. It looks like the anime is faithful to the manga so far. Can't wait to see more characters introduced, and how the anime will handle their developments. I think the anime also paces itself quite nicely. (First 3 episdoes is the first volume of the manga)

The more I read the manga, the better it got. I expect the anime to do just the same. It's gets BETTER, and even more HILARIOUS as the story unfolds itself.

I admit that there is "some" things I don't like from the animation, but it doesn't serve as a distraction for me. I think the music is great also. I really enjoy the song, "Breathrough," that is done by Coming Century. Memorable, and catchy!

Definately an anime (and manga for that matter) I would recommend!

UPDATE 9-13-05

OMG. THIS SHOW KEEPS GETTING BETTER. I just finished watching episode 15 and it serves as an eyecandy of what to expect in future tournaments featuring Sena's super awesome dashes. They're like god speed, it's so cool. Episode 15's a must watch. The first few episode of ES21 gave me a hot feeling, then that feeling began to fade away in between. The hot feeling's coming back to me again at episode 15. Can't the subbers sub faster? I know they're not getting paid for it but it's totally awesome.

I don't care what others think about this anime, but this will probably be one of my favorite sport animes of all time. The first episode is so good that it reminded me a lot of hajime no ippo. (bullies?) The main character has a special hidden talent which is run at lightning speed and be able to run through small paths. The music used in first episode is awesome. The character designs are unique, especially Hiruma (the guy with elf ears). The main character looks sorta different from other main characters in other anime shows, which is good. Hair style looks similar to Niwa Daisuke from D.N. Angel in a way (Spiky hair). The voice actor of the main character seems to be D.N. Angel's Niwa Daisuke. He seems to be the voice actor of 2 awesome shows (Tsubasa Chronicle and Eye Shield 21).

As I said before, the first episode gives off a similar atmosphere as Hajime no Ippo. For those who have watched it, you should watch this show. For those who haven't, you better watch it.

Also, I think this is one of the ONLY football animes (if this is not the only one) out there. Very unique!

You should check it out!

First of all... I gotta say that Eyeshield 21 is an unique sports anime. Dunno about other people, but one gotta understand that American Football is really, really, really minor sports in Japan or anywhere else in the world for that matter. (I'm Korean myself...) So, just choosing American Football as main ingredient for the show itself adds a lot of spices to this show, at least to me and all who understands the culture.

For the technical matters... this is quite an enjoyable show. True, animations is kinda rough, so to say... and some character movements are awkward... (Man... I couldn't bear watching Sena running... See for yourselves...) But, overall, it's bearable. I gave 10 for the sound just because I loved the ED. Great song. And since I'm familiar with manga as well, I have a high expectation for the anime for it closely captures essence of Eyeshield 21 manga. For characters, we still gotta wait for the entire crew to show up, but so far so good. Especially Hiruma... (Man, he seriously looks like a devil...)

So, all and all, I am quite excited about Eyeshield 21 as a quality 'team-sports' anime which I have waited for a long time since Slamdunk. Enjoy the show, folks.
