| I can't believe I'm writting a review for this anime. Yes I watch it. I know I'm sorry. Love and Romance... NO REALLY! I enjoyed this anime because of the love problems in this he chases her she says no, she chases him and he says no. OMG, the never ending back and forth in this anime tires you out, but you do quickly grow on the characters and when something bad happens to one of them you feel their pain very deeply... Okay maybe not deeply but you feel it. I didn't care for the old graphics, but it is an old anime, so I still rate them okay. Story has a great plot behind it. I enjoyed the friendship conflict, I mean there are times in life I wanted to summon a beast god to get revenge with my friends too. But it was good chick anime and all around great. Any Inuyasha lover should be all over this anime.

| Fushigi Yuugi is a lukewarm anime series. I can't say that I was as enthralled by it as everyone else here. Sure it has it's high points: Lots of action, dramatic tension and bishounen galore...but with all the cheesy canned romantic dialog and—as another reviewer puts it—all the ill-timed [Sailor Moon-ish] humor seriously detracts from the total enjoyment from this show.

| Fushigi Yugi is an excellent anime. There are well developed characters, tension, action, and humor. What else could one want in an anime? It may be directed towards a female audience, but it has everything an anime should have. The plot is very well developed, and the drama is handled quite well. There is a lot of drama in between actions scenes, but the humor of the show generally lightens it enough for it to be enjoyable. Overall, a very fun watch.

| Fushigi Yuugi has been one of my favorite anime series for a long time, but that doesn't mean it is not without its flaws. I've seen it a few times, and I watched it again over the past few days.
Fushigi Yuugi tells the story of two 15-year-old girls who are transported to a different world through a book -- The Universe of the Four Gods. The story follows Miaka and Yui, who become priestesses in the book and are asked to summon Suzaku and Seiryu to save the kingdoms of Konan and Kutou, respectively. Many things happen to turn one friend against the other, and love triangles abound. Who will summon their beast god first? Who will win? Will Miaka and Tamahome be together? Will Miaka and Yui save their friendship? Will they get into Jonan High School like they planned?
Pros:
- Engrossing story. There are many twists and turns to keep you interested;
- Interesting characters. To this day I still think of certain characters from FY, and their stories have stayed with me;
- Love-Romance plot. When you get past some of the more annoying aspects of it, the romantic plot is kind of amazing.
- Music. The opening and ending themes are both good, and they don't get annoying. Nearly all of the characters have their own songs, and the music fits the series well.
Cons:
- Inconsistent and sometimes lazy animation;
- Miaka;
- Comedy at the WRONG moments.

| This was the first anime series that I watched in full, some 8 years ago. There had been a few I would randomly catch on TV, but I never followed them with the same dedication as Fushigi Yuugi. And to be perfectly honest, I don't think I've been as in love with a series as this one ever since. It was my first glimpse into the anime world and I still hold it in high regards.

| This is one good soap opera and this will be very much adorned by girls, and some guys as well. Its 12 kokuki setting+kyo kara maou characters+love story. And it is very well done. The only problem you may face is that the story goes from normal to slightly bored and finished in one good climatic way. And this might put off some people.

| *Re-writing*
I was so happy when amimax announced that they will air Fushigi Yuugi, I thought "finally, I'll be able to watch one of the best anime series (according to my cousins and friends) but I ended up disappointed. It wasn't as good as I thought it would be, I'm not saying that it's bad, but there are some aspects of it which I didn't like.
Basically it's about 2 bestfriends who became enemies because of a guy, in a fantasy setting. The story starts with Miaka who found the book of the four Gods in a public library, and when she opened the book, both she and her bestfriend Yui were transported into the ancient world of China.

| Overall a very heart-warming and friendly anime that will find it's place in the heart of those who love romance-history type anime. Fushigi Yuugi is not to be missed!
I thought that the best part of this anime had to be the characters, and that's not to say that Miaka and Tamahome were the best. The ample character development meant that viewers could be very clear on which characters they found likeable and unlikeable. Some very 'peppery' personalities and a lot of humorous flare make up Fushigi Yuugi's cast. The character design was very diverse (yay non-demented faces) and I liked their ancient-Chinese clothing (especially that of Tasuki) which rules out Miaka from good style. Her clothes were the poorest (uniforms just look to plain and regular in comparison).
I judge the sound based solely on Fushigi Yuugi's music. There were nice and memorable OP/ED themes that had just the right beat to make the song stick in your head, but the bgm made less an impression on me. Just sitting around makes me recall Fushigi Yuugi's excellent opening and ending themes!
Storyline-wise, Fushigi Yuugi may appear to be quite simple, but considering how this anime is quite old I believe that it's actually very innovative! Yes, Miaka does get attacked all the time and right after rejecting the help of the Suzaku people she calls for their assistance when she's in trouble. She's always running away from her seishi protectors even though she's the priestess (hello, a sense of responsibility, anyone?).
Fushigi Yuugi's storyline seemed repetitive at the beginning, because Miaka and Tamahome kept on breaking up and getting together again. But as the story goes on and developes, you realize that there is much more to Fushigi Yuugi than the main cast. You could say that almost all the seishi whether from Byakko, Suzaki, Seiryuu or Genbu are given such colorful storylines that they could easily be given tales of their very own!
For a relaxing comedy that can sometimes be serious, I thought that Fushigi Yuugi did a very good job. The switch between the funny atmosphere and dire mood is impressively achieved through the characters' expressions.
There were some bits of Fushigi Yuugi omake amalgamated into the show that I found entertaining, and strangely, always relevant. I applaud this anime for combining so many other genres into a romance show so I reccommend Fushigi Yuugi to anyone who is a fan of realistic and convincing relationships and very touching loves and bonds. =)

| I am currently watching Fushigi Yuugi for the 6th time (yes sixth time ^_^).
I have watched the original Japanese version and I have watched the English dubbed version! From the perspective of a female fan of romance anime and manga, there is nothing to rival this anime (Hana Yori Dango and Marmalade Boy come in 2nd and 3rd place!).
Yuu Watase is "Da Bomb!" when it comes to writing some of the most wonderful, over the top, heart warming and completely able to lose yourself in the plot, storylines. Fushigi Yuugi is the best of all of her stories and when it comes to comparing the manga to the anime, it is one of the most faithful adaptations I have ever seen. There is only 1 small portion of her original story that was deemed unfit for the anime (the arc of the island of Amazon women - it was pretty gruesome and blood thirsty! but was made into a comical Omake Theatre for the OVAs). It's an almost word for word, scene for scene adaptation from the manga and a romance/fantasy story with no equal.

| An overall pretty good anime. There's some boring parts and other parts where the characters just make you want to smash your computer screen. But overall fairly good. In my opinion, romance is shallow and sappy. I like the characters though and the plotline is pretty good.

| This is an average anime. This anime mix decent adventure, romance, drama, action, tragedy and super powers. This TV series preserve lots of the old style ways of doing anime as it used melodramatic and corny scenes. Sometimes the character are likable sometimes they don’t. Sometimes I wondered if this anime is more for female audiences than male audiences.
The fighting scenes are done with no priority as I you realize they are less important here.
Although this series has some flaws, it entertains however, if you are looking for an anime with the new wave style this is not your choice.
Overall music is Great, specially the Opening and Ending Songs.

| Urgh! This anime killed me on how lovey-dovey it was. I love you this and I love you that. It got boring and repetitive after a while. The mangaka is famous for this particular type of story. So if you can put up with a storyling that is completely submerged in sappy romance, this anime is for you! That's not to say that the anime was a complete and total waste. I did enjoy the fact that all the boys were in love with the girls this time rather than all the girls in love with the boys. I also liked how the anime stressed love between friends and familial love as important aspects of the storyline.

| I'd heard of FY as a collection of bishounen and fantasy. In fact, my first exposure to this particular series was the first volume of the manga. I thought it was interesting and was immediately intrigued by the storyline. As an overall experience, I think Fushigi Yuugi was wonderful. It had a mix of light comedy, crushing drama, and memorable characters. The story was plausible, considering its fantasy aspect. If you have some time on your hands and want to test your emotional stamina, give FY a try.

| Before I write the my opinion I do have to say that this genre doesn't appeal to me much. The only reason I watched this for was for its comedic value!
The story starts off with the two schoolgirls Yui and Miaka opening a book which sends them to another world where we can expect a lot of fantasy drama and action to follow. Whereas that part of the story is well covered it fails miserably in creating any memorable characters. The protagonist Miaka is a complete simpleton with no redeeming qualities. She keeps on ranting on and on about Tamahome and how much she loves him. It sadly becomes the central theme of the anime downsizing the other characters which could've been developed better. In fact Miaka get almost dangerously close to the main character of Marmalade Boy (if anyone who has seen that knows that is a horrible thing).
However like I stated before, I watched this for its comedic value and I think it delivered on what I was pretty much expecting. The first half had some decent comedy. The last half becomes a lot more dramatic and the comedy also loses its steam.
Conclusively I would only recemmond this to people who love sappy soap operas as this anime in a sense is generally aimed to appeal to middle school girls. If anyone likes the story just a bit then you'd be better off watching Twelve Kingdoms.

| This was a very nice anime... But the romance was a bit lame... The only reason why i rated the character part as 9 was because i could not stand Miaka and the fact that she had to be saved ever single episode because she did something stupid. She was also so useless and couldn't do a single thing at all. To think so many people liked her and died for her!
However, the storyline was very interesting, very creative.
The soundtrack is also very nice. I may not like Miaka, but her voice actress sure sings well.

| Other than establishing the catchiest and most quotable line in all of anime, Fushigi Yuugi is, at its best, charming melodramatic trash. It combines two of my favorite genres and let’s face it: some of the characters, especially Tasuki, are very hard not to like. At its most abysmal, however, it’s annoying melodramatic trash. Let’s face it: the “romance” sucks and Miaka very much deserves her number two spot on my most annoying female anime characters list. Although it swings erratically from charm to suck and back again, there’s really no denying its appeal. It’s a fantasy. It’s a shoujo. Check. Check. It’s a soap opera of the highest order, but many seem to like it that way. It actually has a relatively decent story. But that aint important. What’s important is that there are cute dudes in it. Lots of em.
I’ve seen a lot of lame fan-service in my day, but Fushigi Yuugi really takes the cake. You know a series is the lamest of the lame when a character’s special abilities involve having sex. …when having sex weakens your “life force.” Doesn’t that sound like something from a hen-
“Miaka.”
“Tamahome.”
Sorry about that. Doesn’t that sound like something from a hentai? But what’s even lamer than that is the amount of sheer repetitiveness in this. This could make a great drinking game. How many rape attempts are there on Miaka? How times does someone save Miaka’s stupid ass? How many times (usually immediately after swearing to stay 2gether 4 eva) do Miaka or Tamahome feel that they can never be together due to some (usually superficial) reason? Man, I’ll be drunker than a mofo. Poor Fushigi Yuugi. It’s not really its fault; it’s Yuu Watase’s for not being able to write a decent romance to save her life. This, of course, brings me to my next point. Fushigi Yuugi has one of the most unconvincing, schmaltzy, and exasperating romances of all time. Let me break it down to you: Tamahome tells Miaka his name in the second episode. In the fourth, Miaka confesses her love. By the eighth, they become the famously disgusting couple we all come to loath:
“Miaka!”
“Tamahome!”
In fifty-two episodes, it takes less than ten for our Romeo and Juliet to fall (excuse my French) “deeply in love.” Poor Fushigi Yuugi. It’s not really its fault. It’s Yuu Watase’s for not knowing that (ho ho) loves takes time....there should be…..oh you know….a lot of character interaction before love starts to blossom. But it does have an up on Ayashi no Ceres. Aya was in love with a brick wall named Toya. At least Tamahome has a little personality. A few so-called tragic things happen, but if you're anything like me, you won't give a rat's ass. Those particular characters were just about forgotten anyway. When the series isn’t being lame, however, it’s being, well, a lot less annoying. It has a beginning, middle, and end and the whole Chinese myth stuff aint half bad. And some of the humor (when it isn’t dreadfully out of place) is actually genuinely funny. There’s a great scene when Miaka cooks a meal that isn't very kind to taste buds. The others’ reactions are very amusing. Fushigi Yuugi also happens to be relatively well-paced. For all its faults, it’s certainly not boring; it’s a fairly easy watch. And it’s the characters that are the glue-
“Miaka!!”
“Tamahome!!”
Gee, I don’t know what’s coming over me. Please excuse me. Where was I? Right. And it’s the characters that are the glue to Fushigi Yuugi. From Nuriko’s lovable fruitiness to Tasuki’s brash rudeness and to Hotohori’s amusing narcissism, there’s bound to be at least one character you’ll enjoy. My personal favorites were Tasuki and the twins. These characters are two dimensional (some don’t even have that), but only a fool would criticize the anime for that; it’s like trying to seriously criticize Golden Boy because it has no story. It doesn’t matter and it’s not the point. These characters have enough quirks to make them fun anyway. And in an anime like this, that’s all that matters. Last but not least, Fushigi Yuugi would have had a great ending… had it not been for the ending afterwards. I hate it when that happens. ...Man, I have this itch. I gotta do it! One more time!
(And say it with me now)
Say it with feeling. LIKE YOU MEAN IT!
Okay, here we go. 1-2-3
MI-A-KAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TA-MA-HO-MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!

| This one is hard. I love the first episodes- the action is fast, flow of the plot is interesting and quick, humor is great and really funny and main characters are just fun, not that sugary, lovesick and dramatic lovers they become later on. I thought it was going to be a really nice series.
But later on, the romance took control over the entire plot. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate romances and love stories, but this one was too sugary, with too much pathos and it was way too repetitive. I hated the way Miaka got into some crap in almost every episode and she had to be rescued. I utterly despise her and because of that dialogues:
"Miaka!"
"Tamahome?"
"Miaka!"
"Tamahome!!"
"Miaka!!",
I was often annoyed.
To say the truth, I watched the whole series only because of Nuriko and Tasuki. But the general plot isn't too bad, and if you can accept the annoying and unhealthy amount of "sweetness" and romance, maybe you'll like it.

| Although this is an anime that a lot of girls are totally infatuated with (because of all the hot guys that are in it) I found the story line to be absolutely intriguing. I love these adventures where a character finds themself in a total new setting, sets out on finding a journey, and makes friends along the way, and together battle it out until the end. However, a lot of emotional twists turn up as they journey around.
They have a lot of great inter-character relationships with two great base characters. A lot of tragic things happens and they make it so that every little twist just wrenches your heart as you watch them battle it out. A great mix of romance and battle scenes!
Animation isn't that bad, this is 10 years old but i feel that the great intimiate storyline as well as the well-placed humor and seriousness makes up for this age. After all, good things remain great after time!
For the sake of refreshing upon good ol' times, I am watching this again and I recommend that you watch it too, you won't regret it if you want an engaging action and romance anime. One potential down side, despite all the character interactions, it might seem a bit shallow at times.

| good anime, actually one of my firsts and favourites.. (until fma came along xD). Its shojo, so expect your lil helpless heroine as she sits and weeps through the eps, either annoying the crap out of you or moving your heart deeply.... actually, chances are its the former. Having said that though, the rest of the character developments are good (until the latter half of the anime). Fairly good opening and endings, and general music.. you'll love this if you love sad animes, so be sure to have a box of tissues with you if you're the type.. or at least through the latter half of the anime anyway.
Overall, its a good anime and lovers of fantasy/romance will like it. Not exactly the most original concept though .. helpless heroine gets saved by heroic, good looking guy, who she falls in love with. Then some evil comes along, plays with the guy and the girl becomes sad, and then somehow, theres a big battle, guy wins and takes home heroine; happily ever after. LOL it doesnt sound so appealing, but watase obviously did a good job in pulling it off.
