Watching Black Jack TV is akin to hearing stories about morals and values, that are usually touching and very realistic. Each episode brings with it diseases, dilemma and unexpected outcomes. The series doesn't consist of any continuous storyline, but more like episodic explorations into morality and a doctor's philosophy.

Doctors are usually regarded or stereotyped to be selfless towards patients, but though Black Jack takes happiness in seeing his patients recovering, his treatments are not unconditional and he charges extreme fees! I really like this characterization of Black Jack because it sets him apart from other doctors, and this unique secluded exterior but warmhearted interior develops about him.

Other characters like Pinoko (sp?) were humorous because she always likes to address Black Jack as her husband, making viewers desire to know the true nature of the relationship between the two. Old characters sometimes come back and make appearances and I believe it is very realistic how past characters don't just disappear. Watching Black Jack TV makes you understand the perspectives of even the 'bad' characters as they eventually (sometimes) turn good. It portrays a variety of views that make it fair to both 'good' and 'bad' sides.

Despite this, the anime doesn't always show happy endings, and thus is the excitement in Black Jack TV sustained (it would be very boring if every single victim throughout the series recovers without a trace). The tension just builds and builds as you watch, as the victims draw closer and closer to their 'fated operation'. And though I find Black Jack TV to focus on characterization (which it does brilliantly well) more than animation, it is fair to say that the animation does not disappoint either!

The music for the anime revolves around the dilemma of the characters and is therefore usually quiet and subtle, but very fast-paced to convey troubled minds. The OP and ED themes were both quite good as well.

I find Black Jack TV to be something alightly different from other anime because of its:
1) Focus on realistic characterization
2) Successful build-up of dramatic tension in episodic form (hard to achieve)
3) Inclusion of morals and values

For an old comic starting out as early as with Tezuka's other series(Kimba, astroboy, Triton of the seas), this one seems to be making a comeback. His style is still the same with his characters coming full to life through the length of many episodes.

Pinoco, the girl whom accompanies Black jack, has an irritating voice though.

This anime, unlike many others, also touches on morals. The lifestyles of the common people, the poor, the rich and the thugs. It also speaks volumes about decency and the system in hospitals and the medical profression in general.

While this doesn't dig in as deep as the gory blood splatters seen in Neon Genesis Evangelion, some parts may be gruesome.

Still, the light doses of humour are refreshing and different for a change.

**Note: I watched the Black Jack TV Special First (4 episodes), then a few of the series before throwing in the towel…should still count under the rules**

Revulsion and disgust were my first two reactions to this anime. Black Jack the Movie (from 1996) came out of left field for me and was a great anime movie. It remains one of my favorite anime movies to this day, due to concept, story, and style in it. I couldn’t wait to see more but at the time it didn’t look like anything was coming soon.

Now, I wish that they would have stopped with the movie. This new astro-boy style of Black Jack is repulsive…far too cartoony for my taste- not only does it spoil the serious mood of the show in itself but also diminishes my opinion of the movie I used to like! All I’m gonna remember now is this one! The most annoying part is that round-head style.

The sound isn’t much better – the music doesn’t really fit and several of the voices are annoying, especially the girl that Black Jack drags around with him. I found her to be annoying in the movie too, but not THIS bad. I don’t hear any real talent in these seiyuus (sp?).

Although some improvement could be seen in the tv show, the tv special had virtually no character development, plus as mentioned before the various ways they were displayed made the whole thing annoying to watch. Do yourself a favor and stick with the movie.

When I first saw this, I kept wondering why it was so damn familiar until I realised it was by Tezuka of Astroboy fame. So that's why they've got those feet and noses.

An episodal type anime, I actually think Black Jack is pretty cool. Tezuka's style was always very childlike, very innocent in looks but the story and depth behind them are anything but. The first episode was enough to get me hooked as Black Jack made absolute demands on the people he was treating, whether they were rich or poor.

I still find that he mostly cops out and ends up being a goody two shoes, either substituting something for payment or accepting that he'll be paid in his next lifetime. Although he's set out to be controversial etc, he always ends up helping people and being nice anyway!

Still its fun to watch and its got its own unique flavor.
