Tales of Phantasia is pretty much a short version of the game I am guessing. I played only part of the actual game because it kinda bored me, but I didn't hold it against the anime.

OK seriously the action scenes were pretty sweet. Cool summoning spells, and magic spells were all nice eye candy. I did dock it some because some of the backgrounds were eh. I think they tried to do some 3d stuff that was an epic fail. The characters all look the same as the game which is nice but they aren't all that cool looking either in my opinion.

The sound was good, not fantastic. The opening song will be something I will forget in a day or so. The sound effects and voices were solid though. (I watched it subbed).

Story... well as most people who will watch this anime will not have played the game I have to score it pretty low. I mean I get the main idea of the story, but I think they tried to shove way too much stuff into a very short time period. This really became confusing, and there are huge gaps in the story. I also don't get the bad guy at all. If finished the game I might of liked it better, but seriously if you need to play a game to watch an anime about it, something is wrong.

With only four episodes you don't get deep character value, but again them trying to do way too much made this into a nice disappointment. All the characters seemed the same. All the guys were good at a specific fighting skill, and fought out of anger of what had happened to them. The girls just fought to fight. All lame, and then they try and add another ninja girl character near the end and that was just really stupid.

I enjoyed the show it was just a bit sad how they missed the mark. Four episodes did not do this series any justice at all and they just tried to do to much in too little of time. I won't watch it again, but it was decent to blow a few hours on.

I found all four episodes on Veoh by the way if you are interested in watching. OK I am out

Beautiful, Action packed, yet Bittersweet.

Before anything, I would like to say that I've never played the Tales of Phantasia game - and as such would be critiquing this as I would any anime. Also, since this is a 4-part OAV - I would also put that into context.

I was pleasantly surprised when I watched this series. Having no prior background to the game, the characters or the setting - this was quite well crafted compared to the standard game adaptations I am used seeing. While it doesnt break any new ground, the adorable characters, the sparse yet meaningful character interactions, and the quality treatment it was given by the producers - makes it a gem definitely worth seeing.

One thing that should be understood about this OVA series before watching it is that it is solely intended for fans of the game. If you've played the game the story is all old news and you already know what's going to happen, it's just a little fanservice by putting it into animation. I've played the game and while this wasn't anything amazing to watch(seeing as how the only surprises were the characters' dialogue), it was entertaining.

There was almost zero attempt to clue in viewers just picking this up on the background and I don't remember seeing anything about where some characters come from at all. If it were a 13 episode, or perhaps a 26, then things might have been different. However the story takes off right from the middle of the game and the rest is crammed into 4 relatively short OVA's, many events being cut out entirely.

Anywho, it was pretty to watch, the animation wasn't bad at all. I didn't take much notice of the music so it wasn't astounding but it wasn't bad either. Characters, a little cliche but still close enough to their game counterparts to be watched. I love the story but it would take ages to go into here, long story short it's a good one if you know it. All in all it was an enjoyable watch and although there weren't any surprises, there weren't any disappointments either and that's rare for these game -> anime conversions. If you've played the game and want to kill some time this is a good idea. If you haven't you will probably enjoy it but it'll make little sense, so I'd suggest picking up the game first, which was one of the most awesome rpg's ever made I might add.

Tales of Phantasia is a 4 episode OVA of the original 1996 Tales of Phantasia game for the Super Nintendo.

The character designs of Tales of Phantasia holds pretty true to the original game. The faces of the characters match up with their respective avatars in game, and their clothing with the sprites. The animation, despite having some small errors, is good to look at.

The music in the OVA is sadly not the same as the excellent soundtrack in the original game. That doesn't necessary mean it's bad, but it's definitely not as good as it could have been. The repetition is too frequent in my opinion, and there is the occasional incorrect lip sync. Definitely short of what a Tales of Phantasia player would have expected.

The storyline of the OVA captures the overall storyline of Tales of Phantasia very well, and even covers some of the hidden bonus material in the game. Nevertheless, a number of excellent parts of the original game sadly had to be removed to make this OVA fit into the 4 episode timeframe. In addition, viewers who have not previously played the game might find the storyline too fast paced and difficult to follow. Still, the storyline was what defined the Tales of Phantasia game, and it is what defines this OVA. A deep and fascinating tale, for people who can follow it at least.

The character development in the OVA also suffered greatly from the time restriction, and plenty of excellent scenes of the game had to be omitted. There is still some character development, but they happen too fast and finish before the development is complete.

This OVA reminded me of what a brilliant game Tales of Phantasia was, and at the same time made me cringe when it jumped over bits of the storyline. I had originally expected this OVA to be a treat to Tales of Phantasia fans, but after having seem it, I am doubtful. A short 4 episode OVA can simply not do justice to the magnificent storyline in Tales of Phantasia. For someone who had not played the original game, this OVA might seem confusing and too fast paced. Overall, I believe that this OVA is totally dwarfed by its predecessor. The Tales of Phantasia game makes this good quality production seem very insignificant indeed.

ToP is based off of an old school RPG (which I absolutely love) so I may be a bit biased when reviewing the OVA. The OVA is obviously meant as a treat for fans of the Tales of series to sink their teeth into, and I must say this fan thoroughly enjoyed it.

The storyline is simple enough. Cless and Chester are out hunting in the woods nearby their village one day when it is attacked and everyone there at the time is killed, leaving them as the only survivors. And what starts off as quest for revenge eventually becomes one to save the world that stretches beyond the confinements of time itself. The only problem I found with the retelling of the game is that it's incredibly short. The OVA only covers the first few hours of the game and skips to the last half of the game's storyline. To be honest, I was really looking forward to watching the gang search for the summons.

The animation is fantastic. Watching spells and summons from the game animated was quite a treat. Sound-wise, I didn't pay too much attention to the music and sound effects, but the voice acting was well done. Character development was done well given the short 4-episode stretch. The Tales of series is well known to have excellent character development, so of course the characters in the OVA based on the very first game in the series are well developed. :)

Overall, I really enjoyed watching this. And as a fan of the VG speaking, I definitely recommend this to other ToP fans.

This OVA is based on the game with the same name. It has a greater insight into the story than the game does. I recommend watching it if you have played the game, for one could relate to it better than one who did not.

This anime is based on one of Super Nintendo's most classic and top rated games. Its one of my favorite RPG/Action games.

First off the animation is amazing. I don't believe ive seen this type of drawing and coloring before so it really is unique.

Sound.....i was expecting some music and sounds from the game because they're great but the music didn't really stand out much.

4 episodes is TOO SHORT. i really liked the game because the story is great but you can't possibly stuff it all in one episode. The magic, summoning, arrows, swordfight were all amazing. It feels exactly like a great rpg game.

Characters... well 4 episodes can't bring out any well developed characters so i'll leave this up to you.

If you like MAGIC and SUMMONNING like any rpg fan, you will probably find this interesting. I personally loved it actually cause rpg magic is cool.

Okie, some things to mention before I review this:

If you haven't played the game, FIND IT AND PLAY IT. Preferably before watching this - it's one of my all-time favourites, at least, and has a lot of the background on the characters and story...

So, from the viewpoint of somebody who has played and loved this game, this OVA is great ^__^. Heartily recommend it to anybody who liked the game, and I heartily recommend the game to anybody who will listen.

Please don't bother reviewing if you haven't played the game... There's no sense in discouraging those who have played it from getting this with a bunch of low review scores.

Beautiful, beautiful animation, good sound effects, and voice acting had nothing to complain about. Characters ... I think they were introduced pretty well, but then I already knew them so I couldn't really tell for sure. They did a good job covering so much of the story as concisely as they did also, so it seems to stand alone quite well too.

Updated as of seeing 1-4 of 4.

SUPERB. I've only seen the first episode as of yet, but I'm HOOKED. This is really good shit, I say. Very, very nice animation, incredible sound, good actors, story and characters are the same as the game I guess - therefore they own as well, and by judging from the first episode this is a 10 in value and a 10 in enjoyment. A must see.

Oh, there was ONE thing that kinda pissed me off about this anime...
Mint. Her voice-actor made me feel like getting stabby-stabby on her face. Although it's not a bad voice-actor (I just hate that kind of voice and that way of speaking (überformal) so it feels kind of gay to reduce the score because of that) I still think they should have chosen another one. Someone with a SLIGHTLY more robust voice. Seriously, when I hear her voice I think of rich people drinking tea, and clouds. Pink, puffy, and soft clouds. That's not good. That's doped.

Well, reviewing this after one episode is not an ideal thing to do... but because there is only one episode, I guess it will have to do for now.

First, it is important to note, that this anime is based on a game (which I never played :p); this might be the cause for the lack of background on the world and the characters. I mean, this information is probably in the game, so why include it in the anime? Bad move, I'll say... what about the people who never played the video game? Well, but this is one of many flaws in this anime.

The story, seems ordinary, even cliched in the fantasy genre... let's see you have evil characters, goody-goody heroes, warriors, wizards, healers, beasts and spirits of nature. All that makes a good fantasy world.

You have a bunch of heroes, a quest (always a quest...) and some time traveling (not nearly enough to make this story original) and some hint that things 'might not be as they appear at first' (won't say more, or I'll spoil the surprise... if you can even be surprised with this).

Also, if you have a cliche story, you also have cliche characters: like the young and tallented hero; the equally tallented and self-sacrifying best friend of the hero; the feminine and prone to visions love interest of the hero; the small, cute girl that only lacks the cat ears; and the powerful wizard that can summon some weird spirits.

So, you see nothing too original so far.

On the other hand, I actually liked the animation. Some buildings were detailed, the city was very cool and I didn't even mind the pink hair much (well, it wasn't BRIGHT pink hair).

The music was terrible...the background music was honestly bad and the opening song was mediocre. The ending song was better. Mint's voice was very annoying.

Overall, I've seen so much better. It has good animation, yes, but that is simply not enough to make any anime good. This is average, maybe even below average. But who knows maybe I'll change my mind, once I watch the rest of this OAV.

It's a lil bit early to comment this anime, but as for 1st episode...mmm...well,lets just say it was dissapointment for me.First of all animation is good but far from perfect, characters r kinda ''slow'' and unmemoriable (but as i said it's just 1st episode),music is good though, but voice acting makes me wanna sleep. As for a such great game on ps i expected a lot more,but...I'll be watching more and fill my review later, after more episodes.

P.s. I was watching this anime after beck so maybe thats the point i didnt like this..cause that anime is so great and this is different,or maybe it's not my style anime...
