I really enjoyed watching this anime, but was disappointed by the ending, as the plot displays a good bit of depth which is negated by the finale.

Overall, the story is a very good one with a great deal of potential, and I would love to highly recommend Fantastic Children to you based on the majority of the episodes.

Unfortunately, however, I can only mildly recommend this series based on its whole.

Since it's not in the database yet: Fantastic Children has 26 episodes.

I found this anime pretty mediocre and I also don't know which part of the audience it could appeal to. A faster pace and more action would have helped some people to overlook the rather simple and very unoriginal main characters. More complex characters on the other hand would have prevented others to get bored over the overstretched story that is just too thin to fill 26 episodes. However, see my last paragraph.

Fantastic Children is completely plot-driven with zero fillers. Since the story drags, adding a few fillers might have been tempting but I don't see how this would have been possible without disturbing the character of the show. Cutting the show down to 18 to 20 episodes would have been the better alternative. Blame the inflexibility of Japanese networks for not making that possible!

A lot of mysteries are introduced in the first two episodes that are meant to keep us interested. But actually, the general story line is pretty clear from the beginning. Here are the good guys and there is the bad guy, and everybody is after Helga who's obviously the metaphorical (human, female, quiet) "key" to something, an often used cliche in anime. Some things I could guess right away and I never had the feeling that the remaining details are terribly important to the story. Nevertheless there were some surprises later on one does not see coming but they didn't feel that earth--shattering either. The surprise that I found most charming was interestingly the one that had the least significance to the story. *cough* size *cough*.

Combining sci-fi elements with fantasy has a long tradition but it must be done right. Although Fantastic Children seems to contain a heavy dose of fantasy elements right from the start they at least seem to have - and do have - some pseudo-scientific explanation. So far so good. But fantasy is a wide term. With the start of the Greece/Girishia arc the flavor of fantasy changes radically. Let's say it felt like X Files suddenly going fairy tale. No need to say that this sudden twist annoyed me. In my opinion this was the greatest flaw of the story, even more so since the fairy tale elements could have been avoided easily.

The character design was bad, more than the story line. The Belfort children had some potential but to use it they would have needed more screen time. We don't learn much about the detective either. Thoma and Helga are pure cliche. Thoma is the typical (pre-)teenage superhero and Helga is, as mentioned above, the typical "mysterious key" character, awfully quiet and lifeless, as bland as an empty piece of paper (yes, Pacifia-sama, you're an exception from the pattern). That she needs a boy of roughly half her age to push her around speaks volumes.

One thing I liked about the anime was the music. Although the opening theme left no lasting impression, the ending theme was wonderful. If you like it too find the anime awful, don't forget to listen to the alternate version in eps. 14-18 (if I remember correctly) before you give up on the series.

Is Fantastic Children at least eye-candy? Definitely not, even although I prefer an old school look any time over poor 3D effects that do not blend with their surroundings (there were some, but only a few). Some characters looked like caricatures. Yet, there are however some nice landscapes. Placing the story in some fictional south-east Asian country was certainly a good idea.

Enjoyment? From the middle of the Girishia arc I watched the anime mainly in fast forward mode. Value? The show occupied disk space for about 2 Euro. I've deleted it.

That sounds pretty bleak, right? But here is an uplifting conclusion: We all know anime we like although we must admit that they're bad from an objective point of view. So although you would have a hard time convincing me that this anime is objectively good, you might like it nevertheless. And here is the easy test: Thoma and Helga reminded me a lot of Shuzo and Lalaru from Ima, Sokoni Iru Boku. Did you like these characters? Then forget what I said and watch the show. You might enjoy it.

And whereas I thought that Crest of the Stars required full attention on the part of the viewer in order to be watched till the end, Fantastic Children totally tested my patience and I lost interest. Only 1/4th of the series was worth watching, especially the final episodes.

Though I admit the story was of the most original I encountered (though grab a reference book abouts Roentgen after watching the anime), one thing that ruined everything were the characters. Had it better and more serious characters, as it is fitting for such a story it would score higher. The most annoying thing was that I havent heard so many ''Huh!'' in an anime. Eg. one white-haired kid says:'' I found it!''. And he exclaims ''Huh!''. Then the white haired guy next to him: ''Huh!'', the the other guy next to him, till that phrase is exclaimed 5 times in a row, making me laugh everytime.
The dramatic scenes were also a mess. It hadnt to do with the animation that was very good and able to express the characters feelings. It had to do with the script writing. Too bad the good voice actors should have such bad script.

Except that the direction was overall good and since it is very difficult to transfer such a multi-layered story effectively I admit that they did their best. But in sacrificing the characters. Every character hasnt only one personality and that could be a problem, apparent especially in the end. Because in the other personality of the characters the few flashback episodes arent enough.
In fact after the first 13 episodes and the first major flashback scene I was negatively surprised because it turned out too fantasy and I dont like the genre that much.

On the positive side though the music is very good and the animation, though I thought it'd ruin the anime, in fact it was the only thing that gave the characters life and not the voice actors as they should have.

Now if this should be a must watch, probably it is only because of its uniqueness. Dont expect high enjoyment of this title. But enjoyment doesnt necessarily make something a masterpiece. This is one of the most rewarding titles but it strains the viewer a lot, perhaps more than any other anime I've seen. But the strain is worth it, unlike in mediocre animes where you strain yourself just waiting for the final episode to finish. Now I will not watch it again for a long time

If you prefer the other series and movies the director is involved though, you might find it more attractive

What a brilliant anime overall. This anime has solid storyline and develops every important aspects of the anime perfectly. It can be mysterious when it has to and exciting when necessary. It's tragic and there's always hope that drives all characters.

However, however my enjoyment was just not a high as it should be. I blame it on the pacing. From episode one to 13 this anime spends too much time on the mystery part of the anime. The pacing during the first half is painfully slow. They could definitely sped up the storyline to give the anime more drive. I found myself yawn several times during those early episodes. It just didn't have the kick.

I also despised the ending. I don't wanna spoil the anime so I won't say much, but I just felt really really bad for a certain character. I mean he put too much effort to just give up. I have to admit I'm sucker for happy ending, but this ending was quite not what I wished it to be. I'm Thoma supporter beginning to the end.

Except those two complaint everything is just about great. long and a bit tedious mystery that is laid out in the first half of the anime is all revealed episode by episode in the second half of the show. Even to drive the plot, the makers throw in several plot twists that really make the anime interesting especially towards the end.

I fail to find one character that are uninteresting... wait I take that back. I didn't like Chitto's character. But everyone else I liked. This is mainly due to the time this anime spends on each and every characters background. They litereally take episode by episode to explain everyone's past and struggles. What is so brilliant is that they incorporate this into the storyline so smoothly. We come to understand the characters and really feel for their personal struggles and vision. I especially liked Thoma's character and Dumas' character. They are both very complex characters that adds so much depth to this anime. Characters like Agi also contributes to how much personal struggle is going on in this anime. We really come to see all of them, and at the end we are forced to cheer them on.

Animation caught me by surprise because it looks very much like 70's and 80's animation style. Kind of out of date, but it worked fairly well in the adventurous background. I personally am a big fan of stylish art like that os Paradise Kiss, and Samurai Champloo, but surely the simple art in this anime was not bad at all. Background designs were all very superb. I especially liked how they used lighting. They exploit the contrast between dark and bright in order to amplify mood and theme all over the place. Music is also very good and gets a bit repetitive towards the end.

Overall an excellent anime. I would truly recommend it to anyone. This is one of those anime when you stick through it you get lot of reward for it. First half is slow but second is gripping. I say do not give up. This is one of the most complete anime I've watched along with Planet ES. You won't see anime of this caliber very often.

Just finished watching the anime and this is going to be a tough one to review. I'll first say this is not an anime your average anime fan can probably appreciate. Unless you think you can appreciate an anime that has a slower pace where you don't find out everything until almost the very end, then you may not reach past the first couple of episodes. This anime has a much deeper and richer story and characters than I've encountered in a lot of animes.

**spoilers**
The flashbacks I thought were what really gave you an identification to the past life, this glorious life these people once had in a beautiful planet which became lost to them due to unfortunate circumstance. It became that much more tragic in my mind and when everybody is finally able to realize their past selves, I got a strong sense of sadness and this is one of the rare cases of an anime that made me almost shed a tear for it.

For me Ep. 24 was the climax of the show when Thoma sees Tina and is coming to his hidden realization. Seeing her brought out so many different emotions that I identified w/ Thoma. The lost past, the love for her, and the horrible feeling of guilt. The last two episodes were good but I just the aforementioned scene was the most powerful. I thought the background music during these last few episodes were absolutely perfect in acccentuating the mood of the scenes.

Also when I watch anime, I really want to like the main character and when I do, I try to look at him (or her) to no fault. So in the case of this anime, I was a bit disappointed when I find out Thoma was the reincarnation of Sesu as opposed to Soran. So at the end of the series when Helga reunites w/ the reincarnation of Soran, it was a bit disappointing to have Thoma be relegated to the background.
**end of spoilers**

I highly recommend this to anime watchers who can appreciate a deeper plot with richer characters than you find in your typical anime.

I love Science Fiction. Issac Asimov and Arthur Clarke are among my favourite authors. With that of the way, I was inclined to like Fantastic Children from the beginning - with a story which will make a sci-fi buff sqeual in joy. This series is one of the really good anime I've seen in a while. Fantastic Children is a story about children who have been sighted throughout Europe over a span of 500 years. Always on a search for something, they are very mysterious and nothing is known about them. Who are they? What are they searching for? Now in 2012 the story is about to draw to a close...

Fantastic Children's story is one of the most focussed I've seen. It sets out on a aim and completes it in a manner I've seen only in Monster. No filler, no extra stuff to throw around, no side stories, you only have a plot which has to be completed in 26 episodes. Like most Sci-fi mysteries the number questions raised are many. And none is answered untill the proper time comes. You have to be (VERY) patient in this series. If you expect an answer as soon as a question is raised, Fantastic Children will be a frustating watch. The anime goes slowly, steadily, with a pace that doesnot give a damn about your curiosity. While some people wil be turned off by this, I found this to be satisfying and very enjoyable. The suspense and the questions raised are done in a wonderfull manner with good (and slow) pacing. When answers are given from episode 14 and at this time, even more questions are raised! There are many revelations and secrets which are kept hidden till the very end of the show (the last was epsiode 24!) In the end, FC finishes with a breathtaking finale which had me enthralled to the finish.

Is the story without flaws? No. Someone before me had said that FC that it was a perfectionist anime. That might be what it aspires to be - but FC falls from perfection. Like with many Bandai series (Scryed, WHR etc), I found this series a tad bit too long. After episode 20, the pace of the anime went in a manner I didnot expect. Some scenes were added to give the anime a longer run (eg. Sesu walking in the rain for 2 minutes, Dumas deciding on what to do in episode 25, Tohma realising who he actually is etc). Such scenes could have been shortened to make the anime a bit faster. This would have been a much better paced series had it been 23-24 episodes.

With all sci-fi, characters are primary to the story. And FC being a sci-fi anime to the core keeps the tradition. The characters are devloped in an awesome manner. To give you an example, it can be compared to Witch Hunter Robin. Devlopement is slow, focussed, and most of all for a reason. Unneccesary details are not there - everything is done for the sake for the plot. And the characters fit the plot like a hand-in-glove. Going in details is hard for a series like FC since even the smallest detail will act as a plot-giveway. The characters by the end are resolved in a manner not seen often in anime - It is conclusive. No loose threads are left when it comes to the characters (and story as well).

Can I recommend Fantastic Children to any anime fan? Haha... You must be kidding. This is a series made for a selective audience. For sci-fi lovers. Apart from them, the series can be enjoyed by people who like a slow, steady paced anime. The execution of the series is something similar to the second half of Witch Hunter Robin and PlanetES. Give FC a shot if you can appreciate such anime. And don't expect jedi-knights/light sabers thinking this is sci-fi. You wont get it. You also wont get much action in this series - it is mainly story and plot. FC remains a anime defined by its awesome plot. Unfortunately anime like this will never find mainstream acceptances - the plot is much too dense, slow for the liking of normal anime junkies out there. Also the anime is very serious - there are not even one liners in this series. So much so that after 12 episodes of straight watching, my brain started to cry out for something light and I had to give myself a break for a few hours. Finished the entire series in a day!

Another thing which has to be pointed out that, FC has very low rewatch value. Once you know the story, there is not much to see again. However if you see this, you will actually come to realise how wondefull and methodical the plot is. And how beautifully is it laid out for us to see. I repeat myself again - FC has one of the best plots in anime I've come to across. Fansubs to download from: Mahou have done a decnt job.

Fantastic Children is an incredibly poignant and engrossing anime with a tremendous script. It is one of the most tedious and stagnant shows I have ever seen, and it took me more than 4 months to slog through just 13 episodes. FC bored me out of my mind with its plodding pace and was tear-inducing. It has a richly crafted story full of emotion and was tear-inducing. I thoroughly enjoyed sitting through it. I could barely force myself to sit through it. Get my drift?
If ever there was a show that could induce bipolar disorder, this is the one. Therefore, for the remainder of this review, I shall break it down into two sub-reviews as a point-counterpoint style of debate. The two teams shall be named: "Team Chikyuu" and "Team Grease." For the uninitiated, there is absolutely no significance behind these names. None.

i just finished this anime about 10 minutes ago and let me tell you, i have a totally different opinion about it now versus when i first started watching it.

this anime starts off extremely confusing and a bit boring. however, what happens in the first 8+ episodes is all necessary for plot developing reasons. if you can make it through all that then you will be quite pleased with what this anime has to offer.

the story is a bit far fetched, but you can tell there was a lot of thought put into it as it's very unique in it's own sense. FC deals with issues of love, friendship, kinship, and loyalty and has plenty of twists and turns as the anime progresses. FC has a heart warming story (with a great ending too may i add) and it also has a tragic element that adds more emotional value as well.

i HIGHLY recommend watching this anime. ranks as one of my favorite finished animes.

Tragic, Sad, dramatic story.

Just as they searching for certain person, I too search for explaination for this series. Watching and waiting with strong patient, after half of the series thing starting to speed up with both action and rich detail story. So many sad story were told. So many flashback about their past and their sadness. It's was most emotional as ever. Some might get annoy with their sentitive emotion but if you are in their shoes, you'll know.

This anime is filled with rich perfect story pluls all the character to support it. Romance was minimal at first but get bigger and have more twist than you can think of. Great slow-pace series.

I am horribly disappointed with this anime. Usually, I tend to like animes that are very straightforward and non-episodic. However, the story for this anime was so horribly executed that I was bored to tears by episode 7. I continued watching to episode 16 hoping to find some answers to what was exactly going on, by episode 14, it was stated what I had predicted and I thought I'd give it a few more episodes. Nothing happened, just a bunch of more random scenes in a small world, with no significant reasoning of the connections between each place.

The first horrible part of this anime is the character cast. There are three main separate storylines/viewpoints that make this show seem to be more suited as a book than an anime. By not focusing on one particular set of characters, this anime risks disturbing their resources over too much space. This is exactly what happens. Towards episode 15, I became a passive viewer, watching things busily unfold as they tried to explain the involvement of numerous characters, without much success. I just didn't care . For example, I didn't sympathize with the main boy's "crush" on the girl and I just didn't feel his will to protect her. I didn't sympathize or feel the will of those white haired kids and their ultimate goal, even when they clearly laid it out near episode 13. The history provided by the detective also seem misplaced and useless.

The story is kind of hard to judge. While intricate and mysterious, the lack of any climax makes the whole anime hum drum to go through. They threw in numerous story past history stories of each white haired character, but didn't bother explaining the significance of each event. In other words, each episode seemed to be an all too boring history lesson with no relevence to the present story. There were so many scenes that I found to be utterly pointless to watch. Nothing memorable can be gained by watching this - no action, pointless/boring dialogue, lack of motivation and a too sparesely distributed storyline makes this anime a complete bore to watch.

Although extremely unbelievable storyline, it does manage to interest throughout the length of the anime. The atmosphere created is remarkable which can be solely attributed to a fabulous Soundtrack. I liked the mystery aspect of it in the beginning as there are enough clues to paint small part of the whole picture. However the story was just to farfetched to have any real effect on the intensity of the mystery.

The characters were for the most part merely okay but there were just too many to focus on. The main characters Helga is boring to watch as she hardly speaks and Toma is just a typical hothead. There is no real development. The supporting characters were good but given too little screen time to have any feel for them.

In the end this was a really decent watch and had some good ideas. The animation style put a nice atmosphere but the mech designs were atrocious and for an anime trying to be serious they looked too "cartoonish". Pretty good series but certainly not one of the best.

The story progress on very well and all the mysteries solved with no plot holes. The story is very well written and well executed. Awesome series.

My journey through the not-so-known animes continue... After the excellent PlanetES, I was not expecting this one to be at the same level. Interesting characters are the heroes of an epic story, which will likely glue you to your screen as soon as the feeling of cluelessness induced by the first episodes disappears. A really refreshing anime, with original graphics and guaranteed 100% ecchi free :)

PS : As another reviewer has noted, the animenfo's description of the show is downright outrageous, revealing things that you don't learn before the mid-season ! Definitely has to be modified.

[EDIT] I "complained" about the description in the forum, and it is actually a direct translation of the official site's description (www.f-children.com). Go figure...

This one's hard to describe. There are mysteries from the very start, all of which you discover the meanings behind eventually, leaving you with a sort of good feeling as you progress and understand more and more about the things that at first were so baffling (almost to the point of annoyance.) While the show definitely centers around children, they are all at least a little bit mature (some to an extreme that you'll understand later on) and you won't be forced to watch an anime in which a bunch of childish pranks are pulled or somesuch.

I won't lie, this show starts out confusing as heck and takes some real patience sometimes to keep going because at first it just almost doesn't seem worthwhile, but, it draws you in soon and you learn more and more until you find yourself glued to the screen around the middle all the way to the end. I wouldn't describe it as having a slow start, just that the writers didn't want to spoil things early on and jump you straight into the lives of these people as they have been doing things for so long.

There was one point getting towards the end where I just kind of got bored and stopped. I later came back and boy was I grateful that I did. It immediately picked up after that and got even better than before.

Funny thing though, though it may look like a kid's anime, certain scenes later on are just bloody enough to be more than I'd really say is something you'd want to show your kids. And I'm the sort of person who scoffs at shows that ensure that a character never bleeds no matter how many wounds they get just because god forbid a child should see blood. Well, no heads being cut off or millions of people dying, but, I guess that it's really just a bit too much. I don't have kids, so it's kind of up to the parent, and some don't mind showing their kids R-rated things to which this isn't even on the same scale.

And couldn't someone please remove all those spoilers from the description? I mean, good grief...

I love this series; it is very beautifully done. I'd say FC would be one of the best new releases and drama series of 2004. This anime, as of right now, is not as popular as it should be and am very surprised that it hasn't made at least the top 200 yet, if not top 10. I'd say the best part of this anime lies within the story. This anime has a wonderful dramatic plot that uncovers the mysteries slowly, but absolutely will make you want to follow until the end. It may be slow in the beginning for some viewers, (although I thought it flowed perfectly), but FC will guarantee anywhere from a satisfying to a great, heart-warming conclusion. Also, if you like dark and serious themed dramas, then you will surely love this one. It is truly a masterpiece that should not be overlooked.

This anime is just great. Probably one of the best anime I've ever ever seen in my life and it will always be that way. It starts really slow in the beginning, but the story picks up surprisingly fast and it just kept me raptured throughout the whole series.

I love the animation. I know a lot of people say the animation is bad, but I just adore it. It's kind of a happy kind of animation and it's not dark or anything, and the look of it just makes me thing, classic.
The music is great in this anime. Sure, it gets boring at first in the beginning because they were the same (but really nice songs) over and over, but I'm giving a rating on all the music. And the music of FC is just awesome.
I'll say more later, but FC is definetly worth a watch. I don't really know why people don't like it, I've seen guys who liked it and cried over it, and I just adore it. The storyline is interesting and I just love the mysteries in the beginning that slowly get solved.

The characters are awesome. I love the Children's white hair and every other character in here. Especially Thoma and Chitto, they're just so cute.

Well. First I thought the white haired, kid like characters in their black trenchcoates looked pretty cool. So I gave the whole series a shot. Unfortunately the story didn't explode at all and allthough there were some enjoyable episodes the sounddesign managed to kill everything! Well. Watch this anime and you'll see how you can waste some pretty cool ideas!

Really enjoyed the story and characters. How they interacted with each other and how as the story progressed, how everything started to fit together like a jigsaw puzzel. The only let down that I had was the way it was ended. I won't give away the ending, but I will say that I had hoped for more.
