| Had this been made in the 80s I am sure it would have been a hit. But since 2004 was not such a good year for anime, all I watched was another mediocre series. A pity because the first episode was decent and the intro was beautiful to look at.
While all the characters of L.Matsumoto's mangas are there (Maeter, Harlock, Emeralda) , and the story is interesting since it explains what occured before Maeter decided to board the GE, the direction is one of the worst I've come up to. Disastrous in every aspect.
The characters are clicheed and instead of reminding the viewers how much the newer series own to the oldies, here a classic series is graded down to a typical and mediocre space opera, aimed at hardcore fans.
While the design was a very good depiction of the manga characters with much detail thrown in, the animation was mediocre. Some mediocre CGI too indicate that this was rather made to milk L.Matsumoto fans and not to offer the magic of his manga's or the 80s series. Not as good as other recent productions (Cockpit, interstella) and one of the series I'll try to forget.
This doesnt compare an inch to the magic of the original GE and shows how even works of great authors can be chopped up for the sake of post-2000 commercial anime that are not worth the praise they get.

| This is a funny anime when you see it. This has to be made like in the 70's where space ships are steered with ships wheel and trains can fly. This is not a great anime, but then its very original. Though the main character in this is Maetel and not Harlock like in the whole series. This looks a lot like starwars till the death star and the end with slight differences.

| Seen up to ep 5 and gave up.
I've seen galaxy express 999, which I loved and I thought this might be worth checking out since it is a prelude to it and it has great animation but it wasn't very good.
It's not recommended for fans of galaxy express 999 unlss you're a real big fan of leiji matsumoto.

| Another majestic page in the Lieji Matsumoto saga. This series is a prequel to the cult series Galaxy Express 999. Based on the first 3 episodes, it would be one of the best anime of 2004. It's pure Matsumoto at his best: Timeless, deep, highly emotional, superbly dramatic and very original. Good points only: Excellent animation, amazing soundtrack, unforgatable enjoyable characters (Maetel, Emeraldas, Tochiro, Harlock). A must to any old school anime fan with the upcoming Blackjack TV series (best Osamu Tezuka character!)that I can't wait to see.

| Space Symphony Maetel is the brilliant new series from Leiji Matsumoto. It tells Maetel's tale before the classic Galaxy Express 999 series. Its suspenseful, heartfelt, and stays true to Matsumoto's timeless style. Anyone looking for a beautiful story should check this one out. It's currently being fansubbed by Live-Evil.
