2x2 = Shinobuden (aka: Ninja Nonsense) is the kind of anime that doesn't hide really what the story is all about. From episode one you're introduced to a few characters and a zany storyline, this continues throughout. A short, quirky anime that's easy to enjoy, so is 2x2 = Shinobuden.

2 x 2 = Shinobuden is not the best comedy/parody anime out there, plain and simple. Whilst you may have plenty of chuckles, you can't help but feel the mediocrity of it all - it is no different than any other anime of its genre; it just doesn't stand out. It might be worth something to comedy fans, but it isn't worth a thing to those who rather have originality than giggles.

2x2 = Shinobuden is a pure comedy anime, and that's where they've focused all the effort. It lacks a story, the animation is lacking some "heart", overall, it might not be a very good anime. BUT, since it's focused at comedy, that's what we really should look at and it does it really well.

The jokes are quite childish and contain a lot of sexual references & also kiddie jokes concerning human excrements. Thus I don't think everyone will find it funny, but I did. I laughed hysterically at least once every episode, and a lot of more "calm" laughs in the rest of the anime.

2x2 = Shinobuden is about Shinobu, a female ninja, at an, otherwise male only, ninja academy. Her best friend is Kaede, a local high-school girl that she is introduced to when her headmaster gives her the task to steal a certain number of high-school girl underpants...

Other noticeable characters are Onsokumaru, who is a yellow blob/ball and Shinobu's faithful companion, probably mostly because he is perverted and only wants to "feel up" Shinobu.
Also Miyabi, who is Shinobu's kid sister and is attending a magic academy.
There is also a slew of ninjas that are a part of the story, mostly just for deliveiring jokes though.

First off, this type of perverse, wacky and insane comedy doesn't appeal to me in any way, shape or form. As a result, I really viewed all the jokes in a bad light and thought that the repetitive forms of humor just dug itself deeper and deeper into its well-deserved grave. All of the humor basically limits itself to a certain type per character all basically revolved around the perverse nature of Onsokumaru and his gang of merry ninjas. While they definitely tried to parody various animes already out there by combining aspects of stereotypical 'ninja' with the all too common perverse side comments in sexually oriented comedy series, they failed to offer anything substantial other than the most predictable and timely sexual joke at the 'right' time.

I've read comments by other people where they find Shinobu to be "so cute" but aside from her ditzy mindless behavior, there's absolutely not a trace of any "Adorable" in her. Other than being treated as a mindless sex object surrounded by a million men in tight suits who need some sort of channel to vent their perverse thoughts through, she has no functional role in this series. But then again function? For what? There's definitely no story, and it even recognizes this itself in the very last episode where it tries to make fun of the fact that endings are formulaic in many series. Anyway, I guess from a purely objective view, if you enjoy perverse jokes aimed towards little round faced girls who act either tomboyish or mindlessly, then 2x2 Shinobuden is up your alley.

Ni nin ga Shinobouden (a.k.a. Ninja Nonsense: The Legend of Shinobu) is a very off-the-wall, humorus look at ninjas through the eyes of an apprentice female ninja named Shinobu. On her first assignment, she meets up with Kaede, an average girl in an average world. Kaede is swept into Shinobu's crazy, ninja-filled world.
I notice a lot of people are comparing it to Excel Saga. While in the same vein of humor, it's much weirder and funnier.

Be warned: do NOT watch this anime while eating. Some of the jokes will make you sick if you are eating at the same time.

One of the funniest things i've seen so far. It's random and hyper like hell. But not in the same way as FLCL or Excel saga which i didn't like. Ecchi and even the story itself gets made fun off. Very recommendable!

PS: Onsokumary owns!

2x2=Shinobuden is a whacky anime. There's no story, I repeat: NO (ZERO) STORY. In fact, each episode consists of 2 sub-episodes. Which means 2 things: Intense-immersing-story lovers will be disappointed. However, for those who wants to randomly pick an episode and be entertained... well, Shinobuden is for you!

At first sight, the art seemed dull and ugly. But having watched the series a few times now, I must say that it was meant that way. The seemingly-dull colour pallete was SUPPOSED to be dull, and not a lack in the art department. How do I know? Well, checkout the other attention to details. Facial expressions, action scenes, etc. However, as much as it worked for me, it might not be everyone's cup of tea, so still, be aware.

Sound was really cool. I love the OP(Shinobu Sanjou) and ED(Kurukururin). Both songs were energetic and simply fun to listen to. I've hardly laughed from just listening to music (except Yatta!, which was because of its shear stupidity), but the ED for Shinobuden was just funny. Oh, and the seiyuus did a really good job on their part. One part of the humour comes from the characters' reactions, and the seiyuu certainly played their part perfectly.

Characters? The only few characters that really stand out are Shinobu, Kaede, Onsokumaru, Sasuke and Miyabi. Other than that, there're hardly any screen time for any of the other side-characters. But that's good too. Kaede's character can be so varied, when she's happy to when she's mad. And Shinobu? Her character is absolutely hilarious. Check out the 2nd sub-episode of episode 1...And Onsokumaru... I wanna smack his butt and make Onsoku-sashimi. He's a real pain in the arse, but thanks to him, the series had a tad (OK, there were LOADS) of ecchi-ness.

Value and Enjoyment... I'll have to say FULL 10!!!! If I could, I'd give em 100! There's no story behind Shinobuden, which is good news for viewers like me, who occasionally loads a random episode to watch. Shinobuden is funny, it's whacky, and the jokes ranges from pure lame to ecchi, to clever and subtle.

So my conclusion is: Watch 2x2=Shinobuden. Heck, at least it's WAAAAAAAAAY better than seeing Sexy-no-jutsu, as well as all those fillers and flashback episodes. Wait, what am I saying? Shinobuden is just a hilarious, no-story, ninja-themed and ninja-parodied series that's a great treat for anyone (May require parental guidance to explain why some parts of the screen are pixallated. ROFL!!) anytime.

This is like the Ninja Version of Excel Saga! Very, very random...but a good job at that. Makes fun of every aspect of ninja ways and various other anime. It's almost like a parody show but not quite to the full extent. It even makes fun of itself, with the ninja squad dissing their own final episode...haliarious.

Animation - A bit average for 2004, could've done better.

Sound - The theme song got a bit catchy if you listen to it for a while. The opening was actually kind of cool, you see Shinobuden in a fast paced sword fight with her "evil self" (They never touched upon that subject in the entire anime...)

Character - The highlight of this show. Without the sheer craziness, randomness and antics of the characters, especially onsukamaru himself (the yellow ball thingy), this show wouldn't be so funny! It's very entertaining to see how dense Shinobuden is!

Value - You'll definitely be watching it again. Watch it once, then come back to it later. It'll feel like new jokes all over again. Because the humor is so random, it's highly unlikely you'll remember it all, comparing to sophisticated humor.

Enjoyment - a perfect 10

Shinobuden is fun. Very fun. Unfortunately it is nothing else.

The opening already tells about everything of the series. Fast-paced action, ninja parodies and a yellow ball. That sums up to a fun series. Shinobu is probably world's cutest looking ninja with a character just as cute and naive. Combine cuteness with her faltering ninja skills and you have something irresistable. Surround her with other manic and cute characters and you have an overload of wackiness. Kaede is a good balance for the ninja with her reasonable attitude. And some yuri references with her and Shinobu definately doesn't make the series worse. The third star in the sky is Onsokumaru who really makes the series come alive with his misbehavement. His antics are the start for most of the jokes and his attitude is just too hilarious when combined with his awesome voice.

Most of the action goes around this dynamic trio. Unfortunately the story of Shinobuden is virtually non-existant. Episodes are merely collections of jokes with very little to do with each other. Whatever happens in the episodes is muffled by the comedy. This makes the series become repetetive quickly. There's only a limited amount of jokes you can extract from these one-dimensional characters. After some 6 episodes it became tedious to watch new episodes because they offered nothing new. Some characters are introduced from time to time but they really don't really change the basic setup. This actually proves how ingenious Azumanga Daioh is because it is based on same idea: bunch of characters who react with the same way to every situation. Difference: Azumanga Daioh doesn't get boring even in 26 episodes. Probably Shinobuden's breathtaking pacing wears the humor down faster: in Azumanga every joke is build with care and executed accordingly, Shinobuden just throws them at furious pace.

Shinobuden looks good for its part. Animation is colorful and fast. Character designs are lovely. Music is on the background, not really noticeable. Opening (kaleidoscopic, energetic) and ending songs (cute, energetic) on the other hand are brilliant. I wish I could give Shinobuden a little better score but with plots and characters that last only a few episodes the series falls into mediocrity.

Mostly a waste of time, the saving grace is the zany character Onsokumaru, voiced by the same guy who was Vicious in "Cowboy Bebop" and Gigalt in "PLANETES," among others. Every once and a while he says or does something hilarious.
Yet another series that is worthwhile to pick up and view while you're watching a heavy one. Many jokes fall flat, but you almost feel like giving them credit simply for staying true to the series, worthless though it may be.
NOT recommended, merely endorsed because it's so harmless and somewhat endearing. It doesn't insult your intelligence, which is nice. It's weird, you feel like you could use your time better, but you don't feel let down because the show doesn't get your hopes up. It just is what it is. It's really a failed attempt at being what "Ebichu" is; or maybe not, maybe it is what it wanted to be.

Not as random as FLCL, but more so than Excel Saga. This show has moments where it's funny, but they are few and far between (Most of them occur when the yellow ball creature called Onsakamaru can't get on screen). A lot of the parodies fall short of their mark, though I do give kudos for making fun of the series' own lack of a plot. I was never quite sure whether 2x2 was making fun of fan service or dishing it out (Maybe both I dunno). Anyway it's not all bad, it looks fine and the opening single is kinda catchy too. More importantly it's short so you can get a couple cheap laughs without wasting too much time.

2x2=Shinobuden is a highly enjoyable bit of self-proclaimed "nonsense." It perfectly displays the almost dadaist species of silliness that distinguishes some of the best (and, sadly, some of the worst) anime comedies. But Ninin pulls it off better than many.

The jokes that aren't simply nonsequitur-based appear divided in approximately equal thirds into toilet humor, dirty jokes, and pop-culture references, all of which are made more fun by throwing them into the mouths of simplified, cutesy, hyper-rounded, doll-like character designs (along with the unclassifiably weird object that is Onsokumaru) that pop effortlessly in and out of SD form, or straddle the margin of normal and chibi proportions. It's easier laugh at all the sex jokes, for example, when they're juxtaposed with character designs that are so obviously trying to be funny more than sexy.

The voice actors seem delighted to gnaw on the candy-colored, gleaming scenery. Onsokumaru and Shinobu's seiyuu in particular deserve extremely high marks; extra points as well go to Kawasumi Ayako-san as Kaede, for not sounding anything like Aoi Sakuraba.

No, there's no real plot, and no real character development. But the viewer can't feel cheated because nothing was ever promised. The show actually spends much of the concluding episode poking fun at its own lack of narrative sophistication.

It's light; it's funny; it's ecchi; it's stupid. It admits as much during the opening credits. You might like it, or you might not.

I enjoyed this show thoroughly from beginning to end. This show should have been called "Onsokumaruden" instead. Onsokumaru pretty much led the whole show.
Shinobuden ranks up in my top 5 anime from 2004.

One of the funniest shows of 2004, 2x2=Shinobuden side-splitting, fan-servicing romp from beginning to end. The story follows Shinobu, a ninja-in-training, as she tries to become a full-fledged ninja. But of course, most of the episodes are insane, that have no bearing on Shinobu's training. One of the highlights of the show is the voice acting. While all the Seiyuu in this show did an amazing job, Mizuki Nana (Shinobu) was phenomenal! I thought she did a great job on "Naruto" (Hyuuga Hinata), but this role was great. Mizuki is easily my first favorite seiyuu.

Very Recommended.

I started 2x2=Shinobuden with the idea it would be a nice comedy.. I was off, It's a really, really messed UP comedy! But it's just as hilarious as it's messed up.
The animation isn't spectacular, and around the half of the show it's just plain sloppy (which the Anime itself parodies) but it's nice most of the time, and very cute.
OP/END were really nice, cute themes, as well as the BGM, it fits the Anime perfectly.
I haven't rated story because there's lack of story -_-' It's just a stand alone story for each episode (which is also split in two parts)
The characters are really funny, and Onsokomaru is the true star of the show. He's just too weird for words, weird... and lecherous.. ^^'
The Seiyuu are all doing a great job, especially Onsokomaru's and Shinobu's! I agree with anyone who said that Onsokomaru couldn't have had a better seiyuu, and the voice of Shinobu is just TOO CUTE!!
The Anime is very enjoyable, if you like weird humor that is ;) There are also many jokes that make fun of other Anime, but most jokes got explained by the subbers.
Overall, A great comedy Anime!

The comedy is mostly and purely based on ecchi, and towards hentai, though there are no hentai scenes in here. This gets old fast due to ecchi oriented anime, and the story is not at all actually by episode. It is 15min per ep, where suddenly there is an ending.

Looking for comedy ecchi, try golden boy, its much better, or mahoromatic. Pure comedy anime would be Galaxy angels and FPM~fumoffu, where ecchi is not the theme.

Yeeeehaaaaaa!
THE funniest anime of 2004!
It features the single funniest anime character of 2004: the Great Ninja-master Onsokumaru! GNO! (The, erm, "guy" suffers from chronic gynecomania so the GNO is quite fitting IMO)
This anime is just brilliant: it makes fun of everything and everyone (even itself).
As the title says (at least in the anime), it's a nonsense kunoichi (that's a female ninja, in case you're relatively new to the anime world) fiction.
Before watching this anime, watch Naruto, be amazed by the crazy jutsu those guys in there perform and get stuck on the amazing (so far) storyline.
Then watch this.
If you are a guy (or someone that either isn't bothered or likes Ecchi) then you MUST laugh to death while watching this (yes, I am dead right now).
I don't know if all girls will like this though because I showed this to one and she didn't appreciate it for what it is (she's more of the "I like reading 100 books a day about crazy philosophers" kind, so of course she didn't like it)

PS: I worship Onsokumaru (and Wakamoto Norio). I'd like to apply for ero-baka-ninja at his Ninja Gakuen, so if anyone has an adress or a phone number (he's got a cell phone too) I'd be more than grateful.
ATTENTION: I only want to apply if it's at Onsokumaru's class, ok? Nobody else.

VERY Highly Recommeded

2x2 Shin is a quirky little anime, purely based on its comedy + fanservice to win fans, it manages to do it well.

First off, 2x2 is solely a comedy anime, that means no/little storyline involved or the fact that the characters' problems are nothing more than comedy value. The comedy in 2x2 is ingenius, to get an idea of how the comedy stands to other animes, think Excel Saga + Ninja theme + fanservice + short mini episodes (ala Azumanga Daioh). 2x2 does it well, almost guaranteed laughs every episode with the brilliant Onsakumaru (i call him Pac man on drugs) and the funny set pieces that occur in the show. The comedy is where it shines and there's lots of enjoy from here, if you're an echi junkie you feel at home here, while comedy go-ers will enjoy the strange stuff going on here...

however, that is also its double-edged sword, the comedy is too strange sometimes to be funny, ala Excel Saga. However, the comedy still keeps up with some fresh ideas with many references to Japan/anime stuff, which is a problem with many of these anime comedies, these references may not appeal to western audiences, however, its a minor fault whcih i disregarded in most of the anime comedies i review. The main problem with 2x2 is that the comedy can somewhat falter at times and drags on too long and gets less and less funny per episode (this is not saying there ain't anything funny, it just gets les funny).
2x2 is one of the better comedy animes i've seen recently and lives true to the comedy genre. Watch and be pleasantly suprised by how 'cool' Onsakumaru is.

EDIT: seen all 12 episodes, not much can be said mroe to my review, the extra 2 episodes i've saw prior to this review just means extra comedy gold. Though 2 x 2 Shinobu is not special, its still damn funny!

Overall: 8/10
Grade: B+

I really like this anime, partly because its the best of hte new crop of rather shameful animes that have wormed their way out of japan this year. The Animation is pretty bad up till episode 9 for some reason, where it suddenly improves. The story is silly and suitably random, but the characters are excellent, the undeniably gay Shinobu, the strange lech Onsokumaru and the best character of all, the crocodile Devil.

Overall extremely enjoyable, I only wish it wasn't so short
