Interstellar 5555 stands out from other anime as well as the music genre as a whole. It certainly gave the House duo, Daft Punk, a lot of publicity with this music video. The first time I saw the video with my eyes is when Cartoon Network aired the opening scenes with the song "One More Time" playing back in 2003. That was one of my favorite parts and it never left my head even now. Since this is a music video, rating this would be a little different compared to a regular anime show.

Some of the biggest names in Japanese animation contributed in this project. One of which would be the Matsumoto Leiji who created the highly acclaimed Space Battleship Yamato and Captain Harlock. The character designs were a dead giveaway that he was involved. The visuals are bright, flashy, and colorful which sets the mood really well considering it's main music is electronic dance. In addition, animation is very fluid with character and vehicle movements running smoothly almost on par with movies. Overall, the aesthetics speak for itself.

There's no doubt about it that the music is the highlight of the video. The video lacks voice actors or effects which makes sense, but it makes up for it with Daft Punk's own repertoire of songs. I myself am personally not a House or Electronica music fan, but it was fun to listen and is the perfect thing to listen to when you're on a dance floor. Several songs ranged from excellent ("One More Time, "Aerodynamic") to alright ("Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger"). Some other musicians also collaborated with Daft Punk such as DJ Sneak to provide with the upbeat tracks.

The plot itself cannot be compared with the music associated with it. Several plot elements were rather cliche and derivative, but there were a few plot twists that I was mildly surprised. However, I understand that the plot was not particularly the focus of this project and dissecting it even further is just pointless.

Again, just like the story, there is no need for such a complex and detailed cast. The stars in this video are the fictional band the Crescendolls who are widely acclaimed in their own universe as well as ours Character development is virtually nil and background very little since they just move along the plot.

The originality of the concept alone should make this a part of any anime fan's collection. Re-watching this could be worth it, but in my opinion, you'd might as well just listen to the tracks.

This experiment was more or less a success. Daft Punk became more renowned , and Japanese anime also became widely accepted as a result. Most of all, though, it's a fun video to watch. A must see for the avid anime and music fan.

Interstella 5555 is a really long music video played to all of Daft Punk's music in chronological order. The story is simple enough, and if possible, I would avoid a synopsis. The visual style looks straight out of a 70's anime, and it's no wonder considering its creator is one of the giants of that generation, Leiji Matsumoto.

The story certainly oozes Matsumoto's over the top drama and romanticism. It's bearable though, even amusing, because there isn't any corny dialog to throw the scenes overboard. No, there isn't an ounce of dialog at all. Even so, the story manages to be cohesive, if a little boring at times. Daft Punk's house beats are easy to get into and they're paired well with the animation when the characters AREN'T playing music. When the characters are performing Daft Punk's music, a lot of the instruments don't match the animations. It's noticeable at all times, but it's especially glaring with some of the percussion. The cymbals don't sound like cymbals, and the tamborine just isn't in sync.

Interstella isn't something I would buy. The animation is fair, and the story is light hearted wackiness for the most part (with the exception of the cheesy teary-eyed scenes), but there's nothing here that will really blow you away. If you are a fan of Galaxy Express or Captain Harlock or any of Matsumoto's work, wackiness aside, the melodramatic characters and the romantic story will be right up your alley.

Interstellar 5555 was a nice surprise. I thought first that the videoclip approach would ruin the title as it occured with Ghibili's similar effort or the movie Robot Carnival.

I admit I am no music fan and if an anime about music doesnt add some other elements regarding a little personality to the character, as in Gauche the Cellist, or some wackiness as in Violinist of Hameln manga, it would hardly be interesting.

But fortunetely here, regarding animation/music synchro the anime was interesting till the end. Some songs werent to my taste but perhaps this is the best videoclip I saw regarding length and the best AMV.

The concept and the characters are way too simplistic for any analysis. For critique of the music industry in anime (yes anime has that too), some elements can be found in Key the Metal Idol. I liked the character design that gave the show a 70's atmosphere. Some graphics SFX were also good and the sci-fi settings too.

As for rewatch value I'm not so sure. This is aimed at videoclip fans. If you like watching music channels you'll like this title.

Anime fans should check this title out at least once. For Daft Punk fans this is a must-buy. As for me it is a unique experience and it makes me more eager to watch at last some episodes of Galaxy Express, of which some very vague childhood memories remain.

The fact that no words are spoken throughout this movie actually adds rather than subtracts to the overall experience. Having owned and listened to the CD before seeing this anime, I found it even more amusing. The only downside is that some of the songs are repetitive and sometimes don't follow what's being shown. Aside from that, I found "Interstella 5555" to be an impressive must-see for any anime lover who also loves techno music.

As certainly one of the most original animes I’ve seen in a while, Interstellar 5555 provides an entertaining story paralleled to a Daft Punk album. I don’t think you have to be a fan of Daft Punk to like this anime for certain, but I think that it could certainly make you a fan if you’re into that style of music.

Considering that, at its lowest point, Interstellar 5555 is mainly an extra lengthy AMV, I was surprised at how much I got into it. I am a fan of a few of Daft Punk’s songs, so, combined with the great animation (I saw the 2003 release on DVD), I think my head was groovin’ with the music rather quick. Although there really isn’t much one can do with character development in a setting like this, I’d probably say it’s the only lower mark I can give to this anime. I could probably easy watch it again, or the chapters individually for the songs. If you got an hour to kill and want something different, check it out.

Interstella 5555 is one of the best concepts I've seen lately. The idea of a series of anime music videos is wonderful. The way these videos carry a story without words is great. This special is on of the best things I've ever seen (or heard).

This is actually a very good musical anime to watch. I congratulate Daft Punk that were willing to try someting like this! I think it is awesome! Great Daft Punk music, great animation, a good story to back it up and some romance, suspense and action as well. And of course a happy ending which is very good too. It should end that way for a music-based anime.

The sound, of course, plays the pivotal role and leads you through a course of events that in themselves are fun to watch. Accompanied as they are with the music it makes it a good experience for the viewers. The animation fits the music and the story really well and is well done. Words (in the movie) are not necessary. I think this movie would do great at parties at home when everybody is a bit sleepy and talk has diminished. You should definitely watch this because you will enjoy yourself and you will meet a different anime from all others I have ever seen before.

When I've heard certain albums, I've fantasised of an anime film being made against them. The CHemikcal Brothers, Radiohead, etc. Then someone tells me about Interstellar 5555.

68 minutes later, the fantasy is reality. Two separate groups with a vision combine to make the ultimate. Deliciously corny and self-indulgent yet so bloody engaging and fun it's infectous. Daft Punk have caught my eye before, but to work in tandem with this is pretty special. Toei animation, for once, show that they are better than the mass marketing rpoducts they mainly take on.

Also, it becomes clear why people like Britney Spears and why all the Idol music programs exist (After yous ee this through to the end, you'll know what I mean!) It's a damn good statement.

Since this, the Gorillaz project, Linkin Park dabbling a bit...this could become a regular feature. It wouldn't be bad, either.

Most impressive of all - making this work without any dialogue! Bloody impressive. And the guitar chick - she was cool. No wonder so many people wanted her. ;)

The music is simply incredible, and always seems appropriate to the action going on at the time. Since their is no dialogue, characters aren't developed, but the plot is surprisingly cohesive. I highly recommend it, even to non-Daft Punk fans

While the animation style wasn't quite to my liking I really enjoyed this, not least for the fact that it tells a good story without any dialogue at all.

The music fits the video really well, which is the whole point I suppose, and the overall effect is well worth it.

The music is good, just not to my taste, and the fact that the majority of this anime focus around the audio, I wasn't left with a very enjoyable experience.

It was a gamble for them to create this project. It was new ground that no production team seems to have covered before, and its fairly obvious why we haven't seen more of it.

The music often didn't correlate properly with the storyline, both in lyrics and tempo. The two cases where it seems to have done best were in the opening song "One More Time" and "Harder Better Faster Stronger".

too much emphasis on the music and trying to fit the music to what happens on the screen (or vice versa) that the plot is so stupid and predictable, no one even noticed. Overall, a nice movie, with nice music, and cute animation (too bad that the character design is totally rigged off 'herlock saga' -_-).The only character with a personality is Stella, everyone else are just flat characters and quite boring ones as well. The Daft Punk music is nice, though some tracks I could have done without, but hey, you have to fill the movie, don’t you? :P

Rarely does an anime makes you feel like this, this being the only true musical anime really does deliver something special.

The animation is very smooth, colours very well applied and the action scenes flowed smoothly too. Characters just looked fantastic.

The sound, me being a big Daft Punk fan may be a little biased, but let me just say that if you like techno, trance, house or in fact any electronic music genres, you’d probably like the sound tracks in this. They weren’t all great, some were great (2 tracks easily making it into my all time top 100 songs) some weren’t too good, but none were poor, of course this only applies if you DON’T hate electronic genre, if you do, you still may like it or tolerate it, but the chances will be low. The sound didn’t fit with the story perfectly, but was very close.

The story lacked a bit. Felt a little like a typical Disney film but lacked some good stuff of the Disney films unfortunately. The ending was a bit lame but still I was satisfied with it. One surprise in the story IMO, which was enough for me.

The characters were brilliant, well drawn and designed. Very much like in Galaxy Express 999, also the male characters reminded me a bit of the ones in Saint Seiya. They didn’t act very normally, but then hey, it’s a musical and given the time of the film and the story to tell, the characters acted okay.

I really liked this, not everyone would like this, but should see this. It left me with the question: “Why aren’t there more musical animes?
