| Kind of a nice break. The show is based on popular novels by Agatha Christie (perhaps the title Murder on the Orient Express will sound familiar) though they are made considerably less dark. Doesn't seem to be NHK's style after all.

| This is a more children-friendly kind of detective anime, when compared to detective conan, ayatsuri sakon and detective academy q.
The refreshing part of this anime is that it deals with a variety of crimes, instead of just murders 90% all the time which happened in all other 3. In fact, one of the first few japanese phrases I learnt is ... satsu gaijiken (all thanks to conan)
I do feel that this anime should give more hints in the process of finding the culpirt.
Animation-wise, it does give me a feel of the 80s style... the colours are cartoonish and the drawing is simple.

| (Review written after 16 episodes. Fansubs come too slowly and inconsistently for me to want to finish, and I'm fairly sure I've seen enough.)
Great Detectives Poirot and Marple really doesn't take a lot of risks, sitting complacently in the rather misrepresented anime-mystery section. It's a fine adaptation of Agatha Christie's beloved detectives into a slightly more modern form, but regardless of this it's quite different from any of the books you may have read. This series is generally vapid and shallow, designed in the vein of something like Ghostwriter: a dumbed-down mystery series to give the younger crowd some brain food. Though I myself would have preferred something a little more subtle and less egregiously sunny, the anime does excel at what it's actually trying to do -- give a younger audience something to chew on.
Frankly, you're not really missing anything if you've already read the books. Most of the mysteries that the characters plow through are original ones written by the cast, typically to avoid the grisly murders that Christie depicted in her books, and they're very uncreative and, well, pointless. The only actual work of hers that they've adapted thus far is a four-part arc based on The ABC Murders. I watched two episodes of it and then skipped right on to the next set of episodes -- not only was the book one of my least favorite Christies, but I already knew everything about the plot, and it wasn't very fun for me to watch.
Like the rest of the series, everything here isn't really noteworthy or much of a hook. The animation looks good, but the animators somewhat cut corners in just about every aspect, especially character design. Very little distinctive work here, except for the excellent job they did designing Marple and Poirot's characters. The opening theme is really catchy but at the same time absolutely awful, and the ending theme is just downright wrong. Voice acting and insert music are really just there.
It's not all bad, though. The character design of the anime, save the obnoxious and worthless Maybelle (thrown in to give viewers someone to associate with) and her damn dumb duck, is absolutely perfect. Poirot and Marple are exactly how I'd always imagined them from the books, and watching them in living color is half the fun I found in the anime. And further accentuating this anime's eye for detail is the painstaking effort they take to stick to the universe Christie created. Famous quotations, mannerisms, and even villages -- right down to Miss Marple's humble hometown -- are preserved and adapted here with the utmost of care. I just find it a shame that they didn't put a little more life into the series itself...
To its credit, though, the anime really does try hard. My inherent bias to the books and darker anime in general prevents me from truly liking it as much as I should, but this won't be lost on a younger viewer or someone simply looking for a mystery fix.
And thank you to Charn for ridding this page of the plagiarist review. That really bothered me :D
