I have to disagree with some of the previous reviewers--this anime isn't aimed just at young girls.

First of all, the characters are extremely well done. Each has their own worries and flaws, and they develop quite a bit over the course of the series. The events that change the characters, and the characters reactions, are always enjoyable.

The story was a little lacking, in that the writers tended to make up the rules at their own convenience. The action was very fast paced--as someone else mentioned almost dizzying. Things change very fast, and the background of the magic world was never established as firmly as it could have been, making it somewhat difficult to follow. I found it was possible to get at least the basics though, as long as I was paying attention.

But most impressive of all were the messages it conveyed. It dealt fairly convincingly with a large number of topics--the loss of individuality through industrialization, the question of faith in tradition, the way that desperate people can easily forget the common good, the value of a person and existentialism--the list goes on.

The animation was also quite interesting...or unusual is probably a better term for it. There were moments where the camera angles and the odd shapes of objects contributed a lot to the themes. But there were other moments where the effects seemed low-budget and rushed.

Overall, I felt it was worth my time. I think it's very unfortunate that this anime was called "tweeny witches"--this anime definitely isn't just for tweens.

This is a fairly decent anime meant for younger girls, and if you are one I'd suggest watching it. Otherwise... it's a bit too...

I enjoyed it somewhat, but it's a bit too...

hrm

Not highly recommended to most of you, this is definitely anime with a targeted audience.

Another very good and original title. If it is considered as a children's show it is definitely one of the best post-2000 shows available. And with animation by Studio 4C what more could children want?

Very few animes managed to transfer that fairy tale atmosphere so effectively. It is one of the titles that delves the viewer into a magical realm and once in it is difficult to escape. If the remainign episodes had DVD quality, with the nice intro and end credits music, it would have been better.

Only problem is with the pacing. It is obvious that from some point on the story gets more rushed, as if the producers wanted to squeeze everything together in a 20 episode series because of budget problems. The end is very rushed too. Hopefully a second season will correct this.

As for the characters they were likeable, especially the three main witches. Very original.

Same for animation. This is unlike any series I've seen. Usually Studio 4C are expert in short animated clips and perhaps that why each episode last 10 minutes. The use of CGI and cell-shaded animation make this one of the best animes in that field.

The music is also perfect for a fairy-tale atmosphere. Memorable, as well as the OP and ED.

If you're tired from clicheed animes this is a nice change.

It has some problems here and there, but overall it is worth watching once.

When I look for anime, I tend to gravitate towards series that are not afraid to buck the trend. So why did I write this statement in a review of _Mahou Shoujo Tai Alice_, another series about a young protagonist who is swept into another world like many, many other anime?

Because it *is* a series that bucks trends. _Mahou Shoujo Tai Alice_ (Sometimes referred to as _Mahou Shoujo Tai Arusu_ or _Tweeny Witches_) is an enjoyable and quick-paced ride through a world of magical sprites and witches that ride on brooms. There's a few main areas that this series really takes a chance on; the first is the animation style. It is very different from any anime I've seen. The characters are actually drawn in a simpler style, almost Americanized in many ways. It's a welcome difference in an anime industry full of much of the same big-eyed, big-haired style. The next risk this series took is the very experimental directing style and cinematics. For what's often called a "children's series", the visual storytelling makes you pay attention and make inferences of what just happened. The third thing is how the series is presented; instead of being the normal 25 minute length, each episode is a scant ten minutes long, including the ending theme! _Mahou Shoujo Tai_ consists of 40 of these short episodes. But somehow, there's more story telling and plot movement in many of these short episodes than in a full episode (or even two!) in many other anime. It is a quick-paced series, yet I never got the impression that each episode was *too* short, and alot happens in each.

Given that, the fast movement of the story may bewilder many viewers. It is one of many series that you really can't just sit back and relax. With great lead characters, several surprising twists, no filler to drag it out, little recapping to remind you what has been happening, and a build up to a good, but slightly rushed, ending, _Mahou Shoujo Tai Alice_ is a series that I highly enjoyed watching.

This one's hard to describe... Well, first of all, the fact that episodes are 9 minutes or so long (counting op & ed!) doesn't help, but, I'll go into detail about that later. The thing is, this show has it's ups and it's downs definitely. Like an earlier reviewer, I felt kind of almost dizzy and numb at times with the way it goes. Overall it's a good show that introduces you to a new world and takes you through a new adventure with time to get to know all of the main characters very well.

It's weird how this show seems on the one hand to be for children, but, then certain things like Alice's response to what she would do if she were going to die tomorrow, I really don't think a kid can understand. A few things like the sprites and some of the scenery can be weird and kind of childish, but, overall I still felt like if it is a kid's show, it's still pretty watchable by more mature audiences.

It has no relation to pokemon whatsoever. The only thing I can think of to explain the earlier review saying this was maybe they just saw ep1 and assumed that based on the fact that two of the main characters were supposed to be collecting the sprites. Considering that Alice insists on releasing them from the very beginning (IMO this isn't a spoiler since she keeps doing it right from the start) I don't think it's very pokemonish.

Amazing ride through the world of magic with Alice. She does everything to make it like Aladdins magic carpet ride. She is the utimate heroine. She changes the world in which she exists and tries to make it better, she teaches by example that mapic is privledge rather than something to be taken for granted.

The soundtrack, wow I really liked it, the characters are well picked to depict each of the unique personalities. I really enjoyed the uniqueness of the animation and redeeming qualities of endless messages that transcended thorougout.

I was impressed that although short time of this, the message was delivered sound and clear.

A true highlight of 2004. You can ignore it but you can always identify with it, the message is clear as a bell, "Do your best despite the height the wall."

This is one of the better shows of the past year, with a very different feel to most anime. I think this is why it hasn't received much attention (and why many people dislike it).

In terms of both visual style and storytelling it breaks with a lot of anime conventions. It's as if Tim Burton set out to do a magical girl show. It jumps right into the story; it makes extensive use of flashbacks (and flash-forwards) and editing cuts and camera angles; and a lot of story elements aren't explained but have to be worked out by the viewer.

Others have covered the basic storyline, so I won't go into that. It sounds like something that's been done a hundred times before, but the way the story is told really sets it apart.

The DVD version (widescreen, with extra footage) is significantly better than the TV version, so get it if you can.

REMINDED ME OF: Pokemon; Now & Then, Here & There

What a highly irritating series. It has beautiful visuals and superb sound (making me watch it all the way through), but lacks immensely in substance (making me wanna stop watching).

As I mentioned, it has beautiful visuals. The warm and glorious colours are awesome, together with the generally high quality of artwork and animation. Only reasons it doesn't get a perfect score, are because occasionally the character animation becomes sub-par; and also the visual direction is somewhat silly - the camera angles that some scenes are presented from are ridiculous, making it hard to tell exactly what's going on, or even who's speaking.

The sound is Superb with a capital S. I can't stress how magically atmospheric the background effects and ambiance are, with a suitable musical score to match. The character voices don't even annoy me.

The story is the first breakdown point. It has elements of Pokemon - with its magical creature aspect and high morality lessons; but zips about in plot as though the makers of the series have a gun to their head with someone telling them to hurry the f*** up. The story is so rushed that I thought I was watching an "abridged" version of the series or something, with all the key elements in place, but no depth. Little time is spent explaining anything, as though we the viewers are supposed to already know everything about this magical world. Whilst this sort of thing may appeal to younger viewers without question, I simply can't bring myself to appreciate it.

The characters are another bad aspect. I haven't seen a single one that I like. They are all way too cutsie, stubborn, and rushed, with hardly any chracter development.

Overall this series has no replay value for me, and provides me with little enjoyment. But when I do like it (at rare times), it's always something to do with the visuals or sound.

I don't know excatly why, but I like this anime. The story is original, even if it somewhat lacks time to be developped. The episodes are very short, and they put a LOT of action in each one of them, to the point of making one dizzy. It's still a really funny series which uses a lot of puns (in Japanese, if you are lucky enough to understand it). The design of the characters is also not mainstream, which I like very much. It's worth a peek :)

While extremely short in episode length and catering to what seems like a younger audience, Mahou Shoujo Tai Alice proves entertaining.

This is specificly because of its character design and style of animation. While the story takes its time to unfold, it is supported on the back of its style. Given enough time, this story seems to have enough intrique instore to carry all the way through.

At the heart of Alice is how one human girl(Alice) can change the ideas and infrastructure of a entire society of witches.

The story takes place from the perspective of Alice, a girl that is in love with the idea of magic living in a unmagical human world with the help of a mysterious magical book that her father had given to her, she mysteriously enters the realm of the witches.

Besides the story, the animation cels and were beautiful and smooth, with rich sense of texture to create a breathtaking world of witches. I was captivated by the pulsating story and exhibitions of Alice performing magic through her humanity.

Some the incantations were notable, for one episode it played on numbers representating words. Like 1-a, 3-c, etc...

In closing I feel Alice is one of the better short animated films of 2004, if not all time.

Seen a bit of it. It's weird aniamtion style has a strange appeal. Not quite sure about the rest of it. The music is annoying, a lot of the characters seem uptight and snooty in general, but it looks like it could go places. The main female, Alice, seems nice enough, while the males look like compelte jerks. But then again, a decent male character is hard to find, full stop. ;)

Magic seems to be the 'in' thing thanks to the Harry Potter hype, but it looks like this might stick clear of that, at least in some way. I guess we all need a little bit of a twisted head-tripa t times, as this seems what it reads like at the moment. It's intentionally cutesy and probably won't require much brain matter. But at least it's not overly/disgustingly cutesy, which is what sabotaged little series like Earth Defender Mao-Chan. This seems like it has an appropriate saccharine dose.

Still, it needs to lift its game. I expected better from Studio 4C.
