| Otogi Zoshi is a 26 episode drama anime released in 2004. It is a very unique anime in the sense that it has literally consists of two very distinct parts, one of which is very good, and the other which is awful in every way.
The graphics and animation in the first 12 episodes of Otogi Zoshi are top quality, as expected from the animation studio Production I.G. Unique character designs and great levels of detail make the first half of Otogi Zoshi an absolute pleasure to watch. The second half however, suffers from graphical errors and inconsistencies, especially in the character designs. Use of CG, which is frequently present in the first half, is also significantly reduced in the latter. Overall, the second half of Otogi Zoshi is but a shadow of the first.
Otogi Zoshi features some surprisingly pleasant and exciting theme songs in both parts of the anime. The voice acting is also pretty good throughout, although some of the dialogue in the later part is quite stale and dragging. The background music is very good in the first part, and less so in the second part. But in summary, Otogi Zoshi is surprisingly pleasant to listen to.
As an anime of two halves, the setting for both parts are totally separate. In the first part, the storyline is loosely based on one of the most prominent Japanese historical events. As a consequence, the story is cultural, interesting, and very well paced. The second half is quite the opposite, and the entire anime looks farfetched and poorly paced. The ending attempts to bring the two storylines together, but fails quite miserably in this respect and only manages to overcomplicate the anime. There are two bonus episodes, but they too manage to do very little in redeeming Otogi Zoshi and instead contain far too much dialogue focusing on philosophical questions no viewer cares about.
The characters of the first part in Otogi Zoshi are based on one of the most prominent and legendary families in feudal Japan, and similar to the story, the characters are very interesting and fascinating to follow. Character development is excellent for the length of half the anime, and there are many moments which are very touching to watch. The second half has nothing of that, using characters with identical names and character designs in a totally different environment that falls incredibly short to the first half.
Had Otogi Zoshi been two separate anime, the first half would have received very high praise. However combined, the anime feels like nothing more than a low budget failed attempt at creating something that tries to do more than it should. I would personally recommend the first half of Otogi Zoshi to most viewers, especially those with an interest in Japanese culture. When put together however, it is an anime that is best avoided.

| Otogi Zoushi is one of those series that tries to be as unorthodox as is possible by modern anime standards, which may work to it's advantage up to a certain point. I think if you are in the mood for watching non-anime looking anime [without any of the usual colloquial humor, big eyes and chibi faces] then you might like this show.....maybe. Personally I think the show kind of lost direction somehow and then got too philosophical for it's own good.

| Coming from Production I.G., this attempt was quite a bit below their usual high standards. Most apparant was in the animation department. While I quite liked the unconventional character designs (and in fact, I felt it was quite refreshing, after watching a string of anime with pretty characters), I felt the overall quality of the work was a little shoddy.
This being an adaption of an old tale (which I am no familiar with), I didn't know if liberal changes could have been made during the adaption. But I felt the Heian arc of the story was the strongest and most enjoyable. There was a sense of urgency to the proceedings and the story didn't feel at all episodic, something that the Tokyo arc of the story suffered from.
Overall, the story was very enjoyable and I loved it very much. It's just that I felt it was let down by the Tokyo arc. If they had worked that one out better, it would have benefitted the overall story so much more.

| I don't remember much about this series but I'll try my best to write a review.
This is series is composed of two parts, the first half is a story which took place centuries ago and the second half comprises of events which took place in the present.
The animation is one of the worst ever. Inspite of this being made just 2 years ago, I wasn't impressed by the visuals at all. Having made in 2004, it's supposed to have a good animation, but it doesn't. The color is very light and kind of gloomy and so there's no life to it, and it just makes the whole thing more boring. What I hate most is the character design, they all look stupid. Just seeing the animation and combine it with the lame story will surely make the audience doze off.
The characters are not interesting at all and I didn't care about them. All of them lacks in the personality department, they are the most driest characters I've ever seen, even drier than Rukawa's personality. Not even one of them is likable. I don't even remember their names, no one is worthy of remembering. Well, I have to check their names first. (After checking...) Now i remember, but they are not worthy of describing, it will just waste my time. I'll just discuss the two boring parts (yawn...)
First half: The story begins with a woman named Hikari who gathers the so called magatama. There are two peices of them in which if are joined together, it will give a power to save their deteriorating village. She dresses herself as a man and pretends to be one, actually I don't know why she does that, maybe not to be underestimated by the enemies? After collecting one magatama, she heads home and she learns of her brother's death but after that, she leaves again for a journey to search for the other piece. She travels together with Tsuna, her bodyguard and somewhere along the way, they meet people who became their companions. Hikari met a strange man named Manzairaku who seems to be a philosopher of some sort and I think she fell in love with him. And to make the long story short, she succeeded in gathering the 2 magatama but to realize later that she has been deceived by the leaders of their village. Later, a man with a mask appears and he seems to be the person responsible for the destruction of the entire island. Hikari and the masked man fought and when her arrow struck the mask of the villain, it fall of and his face was revealed and it was...sorry, I can't say who it is. In the ending we see all of the main characters being engulfed in a bright light and looks like being transported somewhere.
The story in the first half is quite okay but not interesting. I find most of the events to be rather strange and hard to believe. The pacing is quite slow and there are many scenes which are nonsense. I think of her brothers's death to be a just a thing to add "spice", actually, I don't think the audience doesn't care because there was no focus on him anyway, he wasn't even introduced properly. When I saw the animax commercial for the second half of the story, I thought "hey, this seems to be interesting than the first half, I better watch this. And so I did. Now here's the summary.
Second half: The ending of the last season left the audience with a big question mark on their faces. As I said, they were engulfed in a bright light and all of them are transported into the present japan, the 5 main characters areborn including the villain and amazingly, they know each other but they have no idea about their past. The main plot is about Hikari searching for her missing brother, all 5 of them look for him around the city but they couldn't find him, and that's the mystery here. How can a grown up man be missing without a trace? The 13 episodes just revolved around that thin story line.
The story of the seocond half is the most pointless story I've ever watched. Not even one episode was interesting, it was non sense, all of them. They all wasted the 13 episodes just looking for a missing brother and look at Manzairaku, he's just standing in a particular place doing nothing at all. And nothing is happening except the characters running around the city and just them popping from place to place, that's all, it was dumb, really.
I don't recommend this to anyone. Don't waste your time watching this crap.

| This anime is split into 2, so 2 mini-reviews:
First off, the Heian Arc, this arc acts like a backstory for the characters in the next arc. The detailed struggles and lives of the main cast are present and it generally goes into depth of why Hikari and co must go looking for the magamatas. However, despite the look of a Samurai-esque show, theres only bits and pieces of action and alot more talking than it should have.
Thats not to say, the action is rubbish, the action scenes present are varied enough and generally well-chorographed, but it lacks a cutting edge that most samurai shows have.
In a way, this arc is a unique experience from the norm, a heavy focus on story and the history of the past seems to be in play and not too different from many Japanese/Chinese RL shows that generally shows this stuff.
Pretty bore stuff in general
Overall: 6/10
In the Tokyo arc, in an instant change occurs, instead of the samurai-esque past, its now turned into modern-day Tokyo, the story in this arc ois a lot better as well, instead of the slightly con fusing find the magamatas plot in the firts arc, thhis arc is about detective work on finding Hikari's brother. Ok, it may sound a bit naff at first but generally leads its self well with a much nicer paced story. The characters are back and theres a sense of hilarity in this arc which was missing in the first part of the show to keep the enjoyment up.
Unfortunately, this is a shorter story, i enjoyed alot of the strange phenenomen that was happening, and a pretty poor conclusion came about which dented the aniem abit.
Overall: 7.5/10
2 shows of contrasting views and direction, one a much more darker and action-based show, the other, a much more lighter-world with a better paced story. Either way, the two shows combined complement each other well enough as one acts as the back-story and the other, the main bulk.
Overall: 7/10
PS: the 2 specials were entertaining as well, a philosophical episode about Time itself and one about distrubing spirits in the real world. Interesting, entertaining specials.

| Otogizoushi is an anime that combines the reincarnation and ying-yang myths of the budhist/shintoist religions with a two chapters story that to develops some interesting ideas but doesn't manage to connect them with the audience.
Animation:
The first thing you'll notice to be different is the character design... yes it is quite a nice surprise, the characters look beautifull but somethimes they look distorted and wierd... as for the overall quallity I have to say that there's a difference between the first half that looked and moved great, and the cheaper second half... but from the background point of view the first half had very vague and sketched backgrounds wich might be right to depict something of legendary long forgoten times but also created a huge lifeless vaccum and lonliness in the picture.
Sound:
Well the voice acting wasn't anything special, the BG music wasn't on my taste, the traditional japanese from the first chapter or the contemporan music from the second chapter... the Op/Ed Themes weren't special either aldough i did like the Ed theme from the first chapter.
Story:
The story consists of two major parts separated through time and genre but linked togeder by characters and yin'yang... The first 13 episodes take place in the Heian period concentrate on sword fighting and politic intrigues... the second half 14-24 that takes place in contemporan Tokyo by contrast focuses more on mysteryes of the supernatural urban myths of modern Tokyo and then connects the two chapters with the philosophic concepts of yin-yang balance in the world and the flow of time... the last 2 episodes are more of a spinn-off then a continuation of the story as they develop two characters, Mansairaku and Urabe.
Characters:
As most of Production IG's animes the characters are the weakest point... they are bland, lack a real personality or if they have one it's just forced and unreal... they all are one sided and boring from the main heroine Hikaru, to Tsuna, and the other guy with the wierd hungry kid (the last two were brought in to create some comedy but it just turned out bad, especially with the kid)... Mansairaku was more interesting aldough i didn't like his mysteryous Touya/Mamoru (shoujo animes) attitude.
Value and Enjoyement:
Not much to be said, it wasn't a complete waste of time but it wasn't good either, anyway i just think that the second half was better than the first.

| Otogizoushi rather suffers from its bifurcation into two largely independent chapters. While the first chapter excels in all aspects (and contains some of the most beautiful animation I have seen to date), the second takes a while to pick up pace, has a somewhat erratic plot (one or two episodes seem quite redundant), sometimes inferior animation, and presents a major shift towards comedy. Eventually however, it is crowned with a showdown of almost NGE proportions.
I just wish the last two episodes had been placed at #14 and 15 instead, so as to prevent the viewer from going, "what the heck is going on?" for the first half of the second chapter.

| The first few episodes often can tell the viewer if it'll be good or not. If only a little more happened in this anime, this would be loads better. In the first four episodes I was wondering about the mindless direction as they didn't really explain the situtation these people are in. But after they retrieved the first Magatama, their journey really remains the same. (Don't even mention the second half... which has no direction at all)
I think the best part of these episodes are the main character interactions. At first glance, they seem so brainless due to the kind of crappy animation where their actions seem nothing like the words they say, but the dialogue is the strong point as it mentions a lot of Japanese culture and history. However, this is contrasted strongly by the crappy 'other' characters which have absolutely no life in them and serve no purpose. If there was only more protaganist/antagonist relationships, this anime could have gone somewhere.
I guess, my main complaint is that things may seem a little slow and their goal doesn't seem to be a very grand or interesting one, but like I mentioned before the character interactions make up for it.
Therefore, to serve as a guide, if you didn't like the manner of character portrayal in the first 3 episodes, this anime isn't for you as they really remain static throughout. Really, just boring and I didn't finish it.

| Meh ... I don't really know what to say.
That gear shift in the middle of the series could've proved interesting, but it didn't. Those two filler episodes tacked on at the end didn't help things either.
I enjoyed the first half of the series to some extent. The second half was just daft and pointless.
Animation: Yeah ... those watercolor still shots weren't doing anything for me. I don't care about the underlying innuendo and symbolism of the watercolor stills, they seemed out of place. Perhaps I lack a genuine appreciation for art? There was just no cohesion between the character movements and the still backgrounds. It didn't mesh.
The animation in the second half of the series is superb though.
Music: That J-pop crap wasn't doing anything for me either. The OST is pretty good though. Just try your best to ignore those five or so sappy J-pop tunes. Otherwise it's all IDM, breaks, DnB, and whatever you wanna call that shou Heian stuff.
The OST is quite enjoyable, probably a bit moreso than the anime itself.
Character: Eh. It's kinda difficult to gauge a character when such drastic changes occur in the character design. I thought the characters from the first half of the series were interesting, especially Sadamitsu.
The characters in the second half just flat out sucked.
Story: Eh. I agree with everyone else: First half = enjoyable. The Kawai side = forgettable. I enjoyed the history, the setting, the mood, the characters, and the way things played out in the first half. The second half did nothing but put me to sleep.
In retrospect, I guess Otogizoushi was worth my time. Not by too much though.

| I will break my review down into two parts:
1st Arc) 9.0+, A nice story with a relatively fun cast of characters, some minor annoyances with regard to the characters and the archetypes that they portray, but overall a good watch with the exception of the exceptionally crappy ending. It's not a bad ending like Berserk or NGE, but it's certainly one of the endings that made me postulate why I even bothered to watch the first 12 episodes. Might as well skip to the end of the 'journey'. I really liked the first 12 episodes however so the first arc was pretty good.
2nd arc) Take everything you liked about the first arc, rip it out, give a seemingly new set of characters similar traits and the same names, and add a horrible mystery element to the show, and you have crap like Gasaraki (which was, if you read my review, if I wrote one, the crap of crap). I kind of wish there was a concrete major plot point and likable characters in the second arc, but no, Hikaru is no longer the same person and is definitely no longer likable.

| I like ice cream. I’m greedy so I have to have it in three scoops. Vanilla, of course. Sprinkles, hot fudge, and a cherry. No nuts, please. The creators of Otogizoushi knew the formula for a successful anime: strong female protagonist (check), historical setting (check), journey (check), elements of the bizarre (check). Unfortunately, Betty Crocker forgot to mention imagination and creativity- the very essence that makes an anime stand out amidst hundreds of others. Therefore, Otogizoushi is just one scoop of boring vanilla. No sprinkles. No hot fudge. No cherries. And with those nasty ass almonds.
The series is divided into two arcs: The Heian Period and the Tokyo Period, the latter taking place one thousand years after the former. Having the authority of a history textbook, the first half of the show is dry, monotonous, and completely lacking in imagination. As discouraging as this may sound, the first half is the better half. This is not because the first half is good, per se, but because the story officially goes downhill in the second. The first thirteen episodes begin very much like the most cliché role playing game, with two people starting off on a journey and meeting other characters that join them along the way. This formula may seem like a lock for success, but I wasn’t exactly getting a sense of adventure. On the contrary, I could hardly keep my eyes open. The first episode, in particular, is a real mess. Those that say that Berserk had a questionable first episode never saw this. (They never saw Gasaraki either. Heh.) It’s aimless and you won’t know what’s going on (and why) half the time. The second episode was much more interesting and the two should have been switched. But after all is said and done, the first thirteen episodes are the best: it has an interesting story, but with the most predictable plot twists you’ll ever see.
If the story itself has any promise, then the potential it has is all but diminished by the characters. The best character is Sadamitsu, and he is by no means a novelty. In fact, he’s just a yawn inducing skirt chaser with a heart. That’s it, but yet he’s the best the series has to offer. My left foot has more personality than Hikaru, the protagonist. She’s just a pawn to move the story along; there’s no life in her whatsoever. Tsuna has one trait: he’s overprotective. That’s it. Urabe probably would have been the best character had she had more screen time. Too bad. The little boy is just there to get on Sadamitsu’s (and the viewer’s) last nerve. And Mansairaku is a real piece of work. He’s so busy trying to be mysterious, when ultimately, there’s nothing mysterious about him. The only thing flatter than the characters is their dialogue. I’ll call it “video-game talk.” At one point, they say nothing more than the name of places and the directions to get there. And then they’ll say, “Okay, let’s go.” You’ll think that with the political events going on, the creators would think of something more interesting for their characters to say.
Most people (myself included) would have the impression that the second half would have some sort of concrete connection with the first. (And it does….in a déjà vu sort of way.) I thought that perhaps the characters would remember their past lives. Well, that’s not the case. Although, with the exception of Hikaru, all the characters have the same personalities, their roles are the same. It doesn’t take long to realize that the second half is just a retelling of the first thirteen episodes. The creators try to disguise this fact with possible ghosts, strange events, gold stars, and men that transform into wolves, but in fact, it’s just the same thing all over again. I see no need to tell the same story twice. It’s also a bit unrealistic. For example, Sadamitsu wears a cropped shirt. And he’s supposed to be a strong fighter, a boxer no less. Well, I know what will really happen if a guy has the audacity to step into a ring wearing a shirt like that. Well, the whole point of the second half is to correct a teeny-weeny error that happened in the first half. Eleven episodes of it were completely unnecessary. All in all, the series should have just ended after the first thirteen episodes.
Otogizoushi is an anime that could have been great, even epic, had the execution been better. As it though, I can’t recommend this. It’s boring and strangely repetitive (though both parts did have nice endings). But hey, someone is bound to think this anime is the best thing since vanilla ice cream with sprinkles. Just know that its numerous bouts of tedium and uninteresting characters prevent the show from being truly for everyone.

| One of the best animes of 2004 that no one knows about. This anime is like a Japanese influenced Twelve Kingdoms heavily influenced by Japanese folk lore and superstitions.
Story isn't that original, but original enough for a long time anime fan like me to enjoy it. The characters are interesting enough. I can honestly say that there isn't a bad character in this series.
If you're into the whole samurai thingy, this is definitely your anime.

| Minamoto no Hikaru along with her retainer Watanabe no Tsuna searches for the magatama in order to save the capital disguised as her brother Minamoto no Raikou, who is ill and bedridden. Character development focusses on Hikaru, who we gather from the first ep has never killed anyone but has to kill and even more, become a leader worthy of her clan. Hikaru's motivations for gathering the magatama are very clear; she wants to save the capital, her home, but even more she wants to save her brother. But what do the corrupt ministers of the Heian government want the magatama for and what is the Omyouji, Abe no Seimei's place in all this? There is also the mystery of the dancer, Mansairaku, who appears before Hikaru when she is distressed.
The first part of Otogizoushi is quite enjoyable even if it has all the seriouness of a history textbook. The music accompanies the story and the action wonderfully. Hikaru of the past was a very symapthetic character and it's easy to understand her and her feelings. Then we skip hundreds of years into the future. We still have the same characters, but we don't have any more development of those characters even though (presumably) they are obviously changed from the people they were in the past (at least on the surface). The story of the second arc is also not very well explained and the conclusion to that story was not very fulfilling either. Animation was very good at first but less well done in the second arc. Overall, an interesting concept that would be enjoyable for the serious anime fan (seikai no senki, legend of the galactic heroes etc).

| unfortunately, I found myself getting bored of this series around ep. 10 and dropped out of watching it. while the characters were acting/portrayed correctly for their time period, I just could not stomach how boring they were. the artwork was actually quite well and the background art seemed fresh and original with that water painting look. however, a few eps. in the animation quality becomes lazy and the frame rate gets annoyingly slow, fully complete with "still" art fight scenes, *blah*.
the storyline was what kept me in it for as long as i watched it. the gathering of the magatamas was kinda interesting and the way the new characters were introduced was initially interesting, but overall i feel production I.G. should of just stuck with GITS for the formula for success. o well. recomended for those who are diehard samurai/historical fans, or for those who just wanna kill some time.

| A very unique piece of work that may not appeal to some. For starters, the animation's pretty different fom your usual anime fare of bright pronounced colors, purple hair, no nose, no mouth etc... Drawn more realistic I would say. Backkground adopts a more traditional approach somewhat like water paintings.
Point of note though, the characters I believe are moulded based more on what the scriptwriters percieve as 'ancient' behaviours. This has led to some reviewers seeing it as 2 dimensional and cookie cutter. You wouldn't see Tsuna making jokes, laughing or making small talk with Hikaru; their relationship is just what it is: Lord and servant. The same goes for most other characters.
As a result, these characters seem somewhat cliche with their usual honor talk and are boring by mordern standards. Recommended if you are more into serious drama and give this a miss if all you want are a couple of hearty laughs.

| The beautiful, poetic setting of the Heian period, as well as the intriguing 'shou' music of that era, make this anime worth watching just by themselves.
The story is nothing special though, but it is enjoyable. A bunch of heroes set out on a quest to find the magatama that will save the capital city and its people. The characters have yet to develop a third dimension and go beyond cliche.

| While the story was well contrived, the characters were stoic, wry and dry. The dialog was one of the most poorly pretentious diatribe I've ever heard, either the script writer was half asleep or he thought he was writing a script for War and Peace. The setting of the Heian period was accurately told and the story was interesting, it's just too bad they had poor a script to work with and equally poor character designs with virtually no development towards the latter parts of the episodes.

| Im really enjoying this series. I just finished wathing episode 10, as I watched 3-8 in one sitting. Other than the annoying preview which kind of spoils the fun for the next episode, this series has surpassed my expectations. It is very enjoyable. The series shows a political struggle that is entangling the life of Hikaru, who is being asked many things by various people. asked to be a savior, a companion, a woman, and a sibling, she gives off the impression of riteousness that allows others to be taken by her. Otogizoushi has a strong protagonist with great supporing characters, each with uniqe and interesting personalities. Some dont like teh art style, but I really enjoy it, it gives the feeling of artwork of the time, and it sort of reminds me of gilgamesh's art style. This is a grat anime that will keep you interested, although there are some characters (all the priests) that piss me off for being so power hungry or just plain old evil. The plot is somewhat transparent if you've seen as many political anime already, so you can guess what is truly going on, and they also hint at it throughout the series as the magatama are obtained. enjoy the series, it is a keeper.
