"Sunabouzu", aka "Desert Punk", is an anime that focuses on a skilful yet heartless, despicable, almost-a-rapist-but-somehow-comedic lead character. And that`s just one of the reasons that made it difficult for me to appreciate it. For a list of others, keep reading :)

Visuals:
The visuals of Sunabouzu are about average, or slightly above. The colour palette is is bright and vibrant for the most part, but since the series is set in the desert, it sometimes feels that most of the variations in colour are different renditions of yellow or gold. I think of this as an artistic choice however, and don`t mind it so much.

The character detail in the series is quite decent, though there were times when I actually thought some of the characters weren`t actually very distinguishing. Sunabouzu himself, really does seem like some sort of bland forgettable background character in his normal appearance. The backgrounds in the series are quite unvaried - 99% of the time it`s just a typical desert backdrop. There are definitely a few town type surroundings here and there but mainly, the whole environment is quite barren.

My main gripe with the visuals in the series are in the animation aspect - the action scenes are just way too simplistically animated for it to really be taken seriously. There has been no effort to push the envelope - or even keep up with the current standards. Too often you see the foreground character be the focus of a camera shot, whilst the background flashes bright colours from one side to the other to represent fast movement in an action sequence. This type of style is quite a low budget thing.

Sound:
The sound aspect of the series is by far the most superior. All character voices are decent (my only gripe being that Kosuna keeps saying "Sensei" an annoying amount), and everyone fit their role. The sound effects are clear and bold, with good noises for the various bangs and crashes required, and the music is generally okay, with mainly only the second opening and both end themes being not to my liking. The rest of the musical score fits into the series okay, but isn`t amazing.

Story:
I found the story as a whole to be rather dull, and towards the end of the series I was desperately hoping for it to be over so I could go watch something else. It takes place in the future, where a large war/accident caused a huge area of earth to be covered in desert, and now there are people living in the desert finding it tough to survive. The series focuses on the lead character, Sunabouzu aka Desert Punk, who is a selfish, sex-obsessed "handyman" for hire in the Great Kanto Desert. A Handyman in this case, is a skilled person who will take on any job for money. For Sunabouzu, this usually involved guns and trickery. The are some definite similarities with this and the series Trigun, but not in a good way.

Most of the series is a continuation from the previous episode, with not too many episodes being stand alone. Still, each episode brings about a new adventure for the Sunabouzu. However, the adventures themselves aren`t actually all that interesting in my opinion. There`s only so much fighting bandits, or playing hide and seek in the desert that I can watch, and it gets quite boring after a few times of seeing it. Especially when it isn`t actually pulled off in a particularly interesting way. Sure, the Sunabouzu is a skilled person, but I`ve seen similar anime with, to put it bluntly, a more skilled and interesting lead character. There`s no real surprise for the viewer, or major unpredictability in the series. And whatever I couldn`t predict, I was just too bored to try and do so.

There is some definite humour in the series, and yes I did laugh a few times throughout, but on the whole, it wasn`t the intended main "funny" parts that actually made me laugh - it was more the little things, like Sunabouzu`s apprentice, Kosuna. A lot of the humour was based in ecchi, which I just don`t find funny when it`s taken to such a vile level.

Some episodes, are particularly ridiculous - for example one where the Sunabouzu locks up a big breasted character for 10 days at his home and constantly tries to bed her. This episode is actually as sleazy as it is boring. At this point I was about to quit watching the series altogether - I just couldn`t see the point of it. There were serious action sides to it, but yet an unnecessary degree of ecchi. What kept me plodding along was the hope that the lead character would at some point change his ways for the better. Unfortunately, I once again became so bored that I didn`t quite predict it right.

Characters:
Only one character kept me entertained in this series, and that was Kosuna, the Sunabouzu`s cute apprentice. She genuinely made me laugh, and apart from saying the word "Sensei" too much, she was lovable and entertaining to watch.

The rest of the characters were irritating to me. Sunabouzu especially, I thought was a poor choice for any anime`s lead - too many times in the series he borders on practically being a rapist - narrowly avoiding being a paedophile, but yet the series shows it in a humorous way. And the victim of most of his groping - a big breasted character called Junko, is another almost equally despicable character, who has almost as few morals as Sunabouzu.

There are some secondary characters, like the Machine Gun brothers or their sister Natsuko, who are sometimes thrust into the spotlight when in fact they are quite dull to watch. This ends up happening with most secondary characters.

With no decent lead to root for, and Kosuna not really being good enough to be a lead herself, Sunabouzu ended up being a series that I couldn`t really get behind and support. I wished it had a better cast of characters - especially a lead that I could perhaps identify with and emotionally invest in.

Value:
I wouldn`t watch this series again, nor add it to my dvd collection, not even think about it really.

Enjoyment:
At some early stage of the anime, it appeared quite interesting to me. It gave off an impression of Trigun and so I persisted with it. Unfortunately, I ended up not liking it, and thought it was trying to be to many things at once - humorous, ecchi, and action - but never accomplishing each of its aspects confidently. There were a few plot holes and one or two story aspects left unexplained, and I thought that the main characters were forgettable for the most part. I know the series has some faithful fans, but I`m not amongst them - I for one was wanting something with more substance.

Sunabozu is an anime set up in a postapocalyptic setting. However it is unlike the traditional anime where the main character upholds justice and is a simple 'good boy' through and through. If you like anime that break the mold of the typical hero than you'll like sunabozu.

*Warning: this anime contains vulgar humor. but if your ok with that then read on.

Sunabouzu begins as a comedy, and that is what it should have remained. I laughed at Sunabouzu's sick jokes until they became too dark, and then repetitive, and once the anime decided to switch off its humor I disliked the anime more and more until the far too obvious conclusion sealed my dislike.

I'd almost recommend against watching this, but it's pretty funny for a time if you like humor based primarily on the fondling of big breasts and dangling penises.

... that said, there are some decent story elements and the characters are ok, and while I wouldn't call this an Ecchi comedy outright, it is definitely not a serious Science fiction anime.

Just don't watch this if you don't like sick humor. It's not got loads, but there's enough of it to really make you disgusted if you don't like perverted jokes to begin with.

An anime worth checking out, and seriously an underdog in the mass of anime out there. Definitely something to get your hands on.

Sunabozu is an anime about a male in his early teens named Kanta Mizuno, but better known as Sunabozu. (The name is derived from "suna" meaning desert, and "-bozu," a dishonorific that can be translated as "punk kid," "brat," "twerp," and "jerk.") He is a bounty hunter in the great Kanto desert (apparently, this anime was set after the apocalypse.) Accompanying him on his adventures is Kosuna Taiko, a kawaii little girl who is a bit clumsy. Also on occasion he meets Junko Asagirl, a sassy, opportunistic young woman with F cup size breasts (at least.) They fight bad guys, bring in money, and somehow fall deeper into debt.

Very funny anime, even if the story might seem too light. It is fun, the main character is fun, take it as is and enjoy!

Sunabozu is about a guy that gets random jobs. Sunabozu is a mix of trigun and ecchi. Its a very funy anime and i enjoy watching each and every episode even though the story is mild, some episodes leave you wondering with questions about other charaters and so on.The animation is just awsome.I can tell they've really put in lots of detail and really worked on teh design of everything from the desert to the weapons and so on.. personally i think its a great anime but i would like to see more about the charater

Humor anime based on "Do everything" man that does various jobs in the Desert.

However, for some reason, he encounters a bunch of crazy things and situations change like crazy

This guy is driven by his horniness, but the anime does it in a pretty mild way, that it is at least pretty humorous at parts.

I've not seen much anime like this. People liken it to Trigun, but it isn't similar at all. Maybe just the desert setting. Humor wise, I think this anime is better because that's what it tries to do.

I guess you can call this an anime of humorous exaggeration. All the characters dont have any sense of seriousness around them.

This is easily one of the best anime series I have ever seen, although I'm only up to episode 8. Makes me believe that the manga it's based off is a very well done creation with a really dedicated author. The main character, Sunabouzu is very likeable and unorthadox unlike 99% of the protaganists in anime. He's smart, clever, acomplished, woman/money crazy and short. So very short, but he overcomes all odds and seems to survive pretty well as a bounty hunter.

The way the music fuses with the animation is perfect, and this series reminds me of Kill Bill quite a bit in the way it combines humor and a paper-thin plotline (NA in my mind - explanation below) with very well put together visuals and jaw dropping choreography. The humor is genuinely funny when it attempts it, to the point where you might actually laugh out loud as opposed to just posting on some message board about some anime being "funny".

The story itself seems to be irrelevant, because like all the great action movies, it serves as a vehicle to flood your senses with sound, visuals and characters which all three I enjoy in Sunabouzu. I mean, Sunabouzu and Amagumo got their own theme songs when they faced off (sung by the village elder).
Likewise, I think the dialogue and the way the story moves is very clever and never insults your intelligence as a viewer.

If you like action and comedy, this is your anime and despite what other reviews may say, this is not an "echi" focused series. It has some echi jokes and gags but it's never the focus.

And how could you not like the live action intro?

An enjoyable comedy with a very very perverted main character who is known by the name sunabouzu (I actually can't remember his real name). Some gun fighting action, but mostly about suna having echii thoughts and getting rejected by women.

ROTFL! It's just like everyone says, the first eps is soooo hilarious, i couldn't stop laughing the whole time...

Has a trigun feel to it definetly.

This is a whole new level of comedy, it isn't only the anime-type comedy with the various funny expressions, its more the plot of the story and the contexts of the story, SunaBouza is just hilarious on a whole new level.

The animation is also great, some nicely done CG animation.

There is a disappointment to the music... it doesn't have that fallout/desert feel to it, it should have more of it but over all its a different approach to the desert aftermath theme.

The first eps. is a must watch. Enjoy.
