| There came a point when watching this movie, after a couple of tear jerkers got me warmed up, where I felt as if my tear ducts where just seized. After this point, the slightest bits of heartfelt drama would not only get me a bit misty eyed, but would cause tears to stream down my face. I'm not sure how much a review by someone so emotionally affected by this film can be trusted, so take it with as many granules of salt you see fit.
Satoshi Kon goes Hollywood with Tokyo Godfathers, in a way. This film targets the same emotions the assembly line holiday movies do: Familial love. Of course, it wouldn't be special if it was just another animated Christmas Film, and oh is this movie special.
3 homeless people come across an abandoned baby in a dumpster and set out to find the child's parents. Their journey is filled with progressively more unlikely coincidences, and through them, we learn how each of the main characters arrived at this tragic point in their lives.
Tokyo Godfathers uses the most tragic characters possible: homeless people who lead happy lives at one point. It has a go for the throat mentality with its tear jerkers, but the sheer ridiculousness of the events these characters stumble upon and Kon's own sense of humor keep the movie a feel-good watch. The laughs are just seconds away from the sob scenes.
The drama in Tokyo Godfathers is a bit one note though. The story behind all 3 of the main characters is essentially the same. They each made a mistake they themselves felt were unforgivable, but to nobodies surprise except their own, their families still love them. The film is entertaining even without a terrible soft spot as I have for this kind of thing, but I would at least advise the emo kids who are disgusted by family to stay away.
Tokyo Godfathers is Satoshi Kon's best looking film. The facial animations are abundant, and extremely expressive. Even by western animation standards, the "acting" by the characters is impressive. The crazy sulking animations make the comedy that much more endearing while the more subtle expressions of shock and dismay give the emotionally nuanced scenes some added depth. Satoshi Kon always has awesome scenes of his characters running in his movies, and this is no different. He also does a good job of making some of his characters fleshy and 3 dimensional, though nowhere is it more apparent than Tokyo Godfathers. Every one of his female characters, and most of the guys feel fluid, with volume, almost touchable.
Tokyo Godfathers is the only Kon movie with mass-market appeal. Perfect Blue aside, Kon's work is always emotionally simple behind a unique and wacky presentation. Tokyo Godfathers sheds the strange presentation for a more straightforward approach, but the primal core is still there, and perhaps more powerful than ever.

| What makes human human? Is it strong morals, "perfect" lifestyle and fake generosity? Or is it something fundamentally different? Is a person who's drinking day and night, living in the streets and eating food found from trash still human? Rather than still, but couldn't he be more human than the others "normal" people?
Another great work of Satoshi Kon. Somehow he takes three characters, with pretty much only bad traits and makes them likeable. Who cares that they are homeless alcoholic, homo and runaway girl, you start rooting for them from the show's start to its end. Genius of Satoshi Kon doesn't end here though. Every second of the show, be it a joke, something philosophical, or just a simple action is so interesting and gripping, that I was literally sitting at the edge of my seat through its whole running time. I've never thought that great direction can change movie's premise so much, was it directed by someone else, I bet I would've fallen asleep without finishing watching it. Even though I had watched and totaly loved another Satoshi Kon's work - Perfect Blue, I still had some doubts about this show. I opened my Tokyo Godfather's movie file with an attitude - "Show me how can you make a movie about three homeless people at christmas night interesting for ME". Somewhere around tenth minute of this show I got sucked in it so hard that I had totaly forgotten about everything what didn't concern the movie I was seeing then.
If you want something funny and philosophical then this is your shot for sure. If you want a calming quick watch, this is a great choice as well. Finally, if you are a fan of Satoshi Kon, then... you've already seen this.

| I just rewatched this last night, and it was more fun to watch it the second time as I was able to understand everything. Thankfully animax aired it again (after a year).
The title of the movie is very misleading. At first I thought that the story is about Yakuza or Tokyo mobs or something like that. Because of Al Pacino's movie "The Godfather", the word Godfather has gained another meaning (for me) and that is being a mafia leader and doing killings and other similar stuff. So I thought that it will be a dark story, but I was just mislead by the title. The story is lighthearted and will surely touch your heart and will make you do good things especially to other people who needs help.
This is a wonderful tale about the spirit of Christmas and the true meaning of it, and that is to give love (Give love on Christmas day, as Jackson 5 said in their song). Most of us forgets what Christmas is all about and this movie will remind us.
The story is about Gin, Hana and Miyuki, 3 homeless people who found a baby girl while digging in a pile of garbage looking for valuable things (or also food). They took the baby in their "home" and take care of her just like a family would do. The 3 of them experienced lots of physical and emotional hardships while on the quest to search for the baby's true parents.
The story is by far one of the best and heartwarming anime movies I've ever seen. The 3 main characters are unlikely heroes being homeless and penniless but evenso they tried with all of their might to return the baby back to her true parents, all of these 3 are so unselfish and always thought of the baby's sake. Their heroism is different from the movies I've watched before.

| Tokyo Godfathers is definitely a holiday-season movie. Watch it with friends or family around Thanksgiving and Christmas-time.
It has a good, fairly realistic visual style, and excellent character development. Each character has a past which is explored, and even auxilliary characters have personality and motivation.
The story is also pretty realistic, and even heart-warming (though not sappy at all). If you don't like coincidences, this is not a good movie for you, as there are several, but there are excellent twists, based on the weaknesses of the characters.
Overall an excellent anime. It won 'Best Short Watch' from both the Jury and Community on the 2004 AnimeReactor Awards.

| To this day, I still ponder why I've decided to watch Tokyo Godfathers, because of all the anime movies I could have watched at the time, this was the most unappealing to me. Glad I wasn't thinking at the time, because this was a real treat. To me, Tokyo Godfathers is one of the more truer adventure tales out there. Though when the word is brought up, many might imagine swords, monsters, magic, and the saving of the world. But here, we have three homeless bums trying to deliver a baby they've found in the dumpster when scavenging for their daily course of meal. How exactly is this an adventure? It's difficult to explain myself, but you'd have to see it with your own eyes to decide if you share the same opinion.
Tokyo Godfathers is a character driven story that has a ton of character development in its haul. Gin is an alcoholic that has given up on life; Hana is a homo that wants to be a mother; Miyuki is a premature adult that decided to run away from her problems at home. These three don't necessarily get along very well, and it's amazing how they are able to survive for so long living in the streets. While they are bums, it's as if they chose to be. It's also really neat to see how a homeless person lives his life. Our perception of a bum is someone who can't get a job, lives in a box, and is very unhappy. But the cast here seems to be very happy, even though they claim they're just a burden to society and deserve to be trash, and they're richer than we make them out to be.
The story seems pretty simple; a trio of homeless people finds a baby on Christmas, and thinks she deserves to have a memorable holiday with her real parents. During their journey, everyone's past wounds are revisited in which they are forced to coop with in order to protect their group from any dangers. Without realizing it, not only are they helping out Kiyoko's family problems, but theirs as well. There are also some twists that maintain the story's moral value. The only thing that many people probably won't like is how it ends. There's so much room for a sequel, but then adding to it would kind of ruin the first. If only Tokyo Godfathers was thirty minutes longer.
Honestly, Tokyo Godfathers is a really hard movie to review on, and can only be described through first hand experience. The only thing I can say is that it has great voice acting, excellent visuals, great character development, some humourous moments, and a good soundtrack. Overall, it's a definite watch even if it doesn't look like you'll like it.

| After having watched other works by the producer (Paranoia Agent, Millenium Actress, Perfect Blue) this stands above all the rest, maybe not in terms of action or surreal moments (though they make an appearance here too) but in terms of character. Back then when I saw it some years ago I was trying to become familiar again with anime. Anime had already made huge steps in comparison to the 80s. So when I saw such convincing and realisticaly animated characters I was quite amazed. I felt lucky that I decided to rent this title. I hadnt seen previously an animated transvestite acting so funny. The other homeless characters were also convincing.
Only thing I didnt like was that fortune played too many games on them, almost reminding me of the wacky situation of the aforementioned animes in some scenes. Though I think that if I had seen this now I might have found it even more enjoyable
If you havent seen it its worth watching for a night. It is really the simplest anime of the bunch

| Tokyo Godfathers is a dramatic, romantic, sad and yet fun Christmas tale, those best heard by the fireplace, about destinies, past and present, crossing over and over like in some wicked maze, where only kindness and abnegation can help finding a way out.
The three (+1) characters around whom the story revolves are quite peculiar per se: three homeless bums, specifically a declined bike racer, a transvestite homo, a runaway teenager. Also, a fourth character, which actually kicks the story in, is an abandoned newborn, found amongst some garbage by our three un-heroes.
What's so good about it? A nice plot, great characters, high visual quality, and that Christmas mood we all love.
See specific sections for further details. (C) 2005 kaneda1080

| Tokyo Godfathers is an unsung classic. While it did not recieve as much press as, for example, Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away did it certainly deserves it. The heart warming story of three homeless people who find an abandoned baby and set out to find its mother. Many surprises pop up along the way and any fan of anime needs to see this (watch on Christmas Eve for added effect :D)

| Tokyo Godfathers centers on three homeless people who try to locate the parents of an abandoned baby. This anime is very character driven as we get a good sense of the type of lives each character experienced resulting in them being on the streets. To avoid having the movie being totally angsty, there is comedy thrown into the movie as well centered on the miracles of Kiyoko, the name of the baby chosen by Hana as he, Gin, and Miyuki search for her parents as Hana believes the baby to be a "messenger of God." The religious symbolism of Tokyo Godfathers is nothing new in anime, but it is used to great effect in the movie. Animation wise, the movie has a similar animation style to Perfect Blue which while it makes the style stand out from most other titles I've seen, it's nothing too spectacular. Sound wise, the movie has music which adds in slow, dramatic music for angsty moments and fast, comical music in the movies comedy scenes. While I wouldn't call the movie a masterpiece, Tokyo Godfathers is a great movie to check out if you are into anime with religious symbolism or which is very character-driven.

| A very brilliant anime movie that seemed to be a different change of pace. The realism that the three characters bring out gives out the moody perception of how they deal with their homeless life. This also gives out a high standing point of showing their turn of complete faith when they encountered with the baby, which will make itself a very strong value of watching it. Everything was greatly placed in a significant way; from its unusual animation, to its good quality of soundtrack. I think would be really be enjoyed for a lot people in general, for those who are anime lovers or not.

| A very weird movie of Satoshi Konw which tells a story about homeless guys, that story might be rejecting but it tells about good things of having or creating a family... a very good funny anime movie with some big moments and very good ending...the animation was also great... I loved that movie... but not for guys who like mangas only to see pretty girls ;)

| Like the most shows I know from Madhouse, i really enjoyed this. Usually I tend to focus on the story, but here I didn't mind the lack of originality...the main points in this, like in many Madhouse anime, were the characters and their stories. Too bad not many people know about it, because it's really great! I'm thinking about buying the limited DVD set. Great extras.

| this is highly unique and original. animation was different from many that i've seen.
i don't know where to start off on a movie like this. humor, a human story, fun, interesting, and many different scenes and twists.
despite the short time alloted, Tokyo Godfathers leaves nothing unturned, the story line is fairly straightforward and leads you through a fun journey
like i mentioned, i've never seen something like this before
weakness? nothing special except the story which doesn't leave a strong impression.so if the description doesn't even slightly peak your interests.... you probably won't like it ( i personally thought it was pretty good)

| Just took this long shelved anime out to watch and it turned out to be quite enjoyable probably due to its setting to be around the Xmas period.
Although not the most creative of stories, this anime is nicely paced and the storyline flows smoothly. While it has themes like homelessness and homosexuality in it, it didn't go too deep into them and just subtly let viewers decide how they should be viewed. This anime is heartwarming and very funny at times. The characters' expressions and actions were really nicely done. Unless one has a really really bad day, this anime should bring smiles to anyone at the end of it.

| "...tis the season to be jolly." If you were to ask most what Christmas means to them they'll say something like that. They'll spew stuff about "happiness, joy, and family." You know the deal. As someone who doesn't celebrate the holiday (and haven't done so in thirteen years) I couldn't care less about December 25 and was grateful for the minimal references in the movie. In any case, I disagree with reviewer Moezkat who states that this film is "a typical Christmas miracle story, which should be seen at Christmas for maximum effect." Not only is the film anything but typical, but I think it can be fully enjoyed no matter what the season is. It has very little to do with the holiday, after all. Christmas will be the last time I'll consider showing the film to others. (I'll show Gremlins instead.) Instead of a happy-go-lucky view of what the holiday supposedly means, we have regret, loss, destitution-the very opposite of what most will say Christmas is (At least until they get their credit card bill). A surprisingly charming film, Tokyo Godfathers takes what could have been a simple story and makes it unconventional.
