I think this is one of the very rare anime's which can be considered an educational media explaining the star constellation to everyone. On the plus side it tries very well to associate the stars with some events to make people remember the star constellation. But this is a religion based anime>christian, which has a lot of Christianity in it. I say this is one boring anime even though I like classics a lot I could not appreciate this one.

From what I read in other reviews the anime was produced by the same guy who did the magnificent ''Jack and the Beanstalk'' and ''Tales of Genji'' anime but also the mediocre ''Street Fighter II - the Movie''.

But for a movie NOTGR is surely the best to come from Japan so far. Of course opinions vary but you might actually like this movie if you've seen many similar animated films (including stop-motion) not only from Japan, but other countries known for their artsy animation. Or if you're a fan of Studio Ghibili and liked Angel's Egg. I plan to watch Spring and Chaos anime too, if I find it. If you're used to the pace mainstream animes offer and arent used to older and artsy animation then I'm afraid this title is not for you and you should watch something else more easily digestible. This title will bore you to tears.

Unfortunately not many animes are like that and exceptions are very few. If you're a fan of artsy anime (and animation in general I presume) this title is a must watch. In some aspects it competes and even surpasses some classic Ghibili movies and in the aesthetic feeling it reaches the level of well known surreal animated features outside Japan.

Surely the best animated movie from Japan I've seen and one of the best .
Requires many viewings and is recommended to experienced and patient viewers.

Why is it that I seem to keep running into these hard to judge anime these days - berserk, kenshin ova2, blame, etc, and now this.

Vivafruit's review of two halves sums this up rather well. I'm really not sure what to make of this. On one hand this seems to be quite a subtle anime with deep and hidden meanings, on the other hand it's so goddam booooriiiiing. One thing I am sure of though, is that in terms of effective audience targetting, this anime badly misses the mark. This was meant to be for children, but it'll be a miracle to find some kids that can actually sit out the whole film and absorb some of its meanings. For one thing the pacing is far too slow for children, and for another it's far too subtle. In fact, even I had trouble keeping my attention, especially during the first half. My mind would often start wandering and then I'd suddenly realised that the scene's changed but I had no recollection of it changing :S Not a good sign. I couldn't be arsed to go back a bit and watch that part again either cos it just didn't seem to be worth it - scenes such as the bird hunting seem to be pointless at the time, even though now, looking back on it, maybe it wasn't as pointless as I first thought. Damned if I know what it meant though. Second half made me perk up, especially with the incident of the ship. I think that was the time I realised that there was a lot to this anime than meets the eye.

Great twist at the end, I really didn't see it coming. Maybe it's cos I'm stupid when it comes to things like this. A very strong, thought provoking ending. I have to say I feel I really need to watch it again in order to get everything... but not just yet hehe.

To sum up. An overly long, boring anime but with a complex and subtle story, with strong religeous themes behind it as well as a powerful underlying messages. I really can't decide what to give this, so I just averaged the good and the bad, came up with a rough idea of what I want to rate it, then picked a rating I haven't used before :P

I think Night on the Galactic Railroad is one of the most underrated anime movies made; rightfully so considering how complex this movie can be and that it's hard to get some of the underlying themes in it if you only watch it once. Rather dated production, but I loved this movie on the whole and would recommend it.

This movie is a huge waste of talent. Great eerie soundtrack, stunning (if dated) visual, a lot of imagination - all wasted on the worst movie I've ever seen.

First let me state my biases. This is a Christian movie. I am not Christian. In fact, I consider Christianity a disease that should be wiped off the planet. That said, there are overtly Christian works of art that I have thoroughly enjoyed. Needless to say this movie is not one of them.

This movie gets off to a very slow start. In the first third of the movie, nothing happens. Then the galactic railroad arrives - for no apparent reason - and stuff starts happening. Stupid, non-sensical stuff.

In the last two thirds of the movie, the main character and his friend ride the galactic railroad and see the wonders of the universe. Except that the "wonders of the universe" are somehow all idealized versions of Earth. Appearently the Northern Cross constellation is not made of real stars, which may be orbited by real planets, which may in turn by inhabited by alien civilization which have their own beliefs and their own religion. No, it's just a big symbol for Christianity. How arrogant can you get?

Overall

Supposedly this movie is about death. However, the "death" that the movie depicts is no more real than its "wonders of the universe". We encounter happy children going to heaven. We don't encounter the terror, the pain, or the sense of loss. Now, I am not saying that death is a terrible thing that we must all fear. However, there is a difference between a realistic postive depection of death and an outright lie, and this movie is clearly the latter.

Overall this movie felt boring, preachy, and vapid. A lot of times something seemed to be profound, only to turn vapid and preachy upon closer examination. If you really want to see this movie, I recommend watching with the subtitles turned off - unless you understand Japanese, in which case you should seek out a dub in a language that you don't understand - but that merely filters out the gross stupidity of the movie and leaves the boredom. If you want to see a vaguely similar movie that is actually good, check out Angel's Egg.

One final comment. If you want to make a philosophical point through a movie, a good way to do this would be a believable depiction of a situation that demonstrates the philosophical point. A bad way would be to have one of the characters state the philosophical point outright for no apparent reason - especially if the "philosophical point" turns out to be something stupid.
