First I'll clarify that I watched it on fansub and not on a 50" Plasma screen and Dolby Surround on DVD

But I'm not into such CGI eye candy stuff anyway so it has to be good to be interesting. GITS2 Innocence was decent plotwise and watchable too. Final Fantasy franchise is not for me so I'll skip the title. The French movie "Rennaisance" though it had a poor plot was very well directed when it came to action. Same for the movie "Azur et Asmar" that looks promising. But not this one.

Except that the animation looked out of place, the plot had nothing to do with the manga. I can discern when a movie is going to be dull and I better be doing something more constructive instead of watching this. After the first 15 minutes I gave up and thought this movie would turn one of the most boring experiences of my life.

Music and Sfx were nice, voice actors too but you cant polish a turd no matter how hard you try.

Fortunately I had watched the older 1988 movie that proofs yet again how older animes are still better. If they want to test the capabilities of computers make at least a good title or else I'd better turn to Pixar.

Everything looks like a pastiche from Masamune Shirows very good manga. The battle scenes were for visuall eyecandy's sake and most of the anime plot too. Really Appleseed deserves better.

It seems this movie is for the generation that grew fond of detailed CGI and videogame graphics but without substance, so I feel dejected whenever I see such garbage.

There are better CGI titles. I was mainly interested in the "innovative" animation but 10-15 minutes instead of 105 would suffice.

I should have known something was up when I saw the opening sequence: a completely useless battle scene that went for at least 10minutes. 10 minutes of seeing this girl waving around a gun, spying on randoms and dodging explosions that appeared every few seconds. I couldn't help complaining.
“If this whole movie is just a random battle scene I’m gonna be soooo angry!”

Well, luckily, the movie wasn’t an entire battle scene, but it still made me soooo angry! Why? Because while the animation was absolutely stunning (for most part) and the sound was actually good at points, the story and characters were just plain…crappy. Oh yeah, and the execution was so totally retarded at points that it was just confusing and disorientating.

The battle scenes were pathetic, completely uninteresting and void of any suspense or tension. The dodgy sound can be blamed for that, but also the lack of decent sound effects.

Whoever directed the photography of this movie needs serious help. Most scenes were composed with such little thought that it made me think some kid had just been mucking around with a camcorder for a while, and that’s not a good thing, it gave me a headache (and a laugh).

For example, you’re in a maze, enclosed space with ten soldiers. They are doing all these stunts so it’s hard to tell what is happening, even when the camera isn’t moving. But NO, the camera dosn’t stay still- it attempted to follow every single movement- so it basically span around in circles, zoomed in and close up, and it was all over the place!

Oh yeah! The dialogue was so cheesy at points it made me laugh. For example, the most emotional scene in the movie was the most puke inducing. So I don’t give away spoilers, lets just call them Bob and Joe. Okay, Bob has just been shot and is lying on the beach.
Bob: Joe…
Joe: NO! Don’t talk!
Bob: * whispering * I’m sorry about before…
Joe: I thought I just told you not to talk
Bob: Please… save us all! You’re our only chance! The future rests in your hands!
Joe: They’d be no future without you (okay, that’s touching, but so darn corny!)
Bob: Go now! You’re running out of time! Go to * has a coughing fit *
Joe: No bob! I won’t let you die!
Bob: They’d be no point living without you… * coughs * I forgive you… * dies *
Joe: Bob?! Bob!! BOB!!! * cries over his body *

Oh my gawd please kill me! I was almost pissing myself I was laughing so hard! That’s one of the only ways I enjoyed this movie, predicting what I thought would happen, pointing out absolute crap parts of the anime, and laughing at the movie.

No, I can’t say I really enjoyed Appleseed. It was way too much like a crap video game mixed with some random sci-fi movie. Who wants to see a video game turned into a movie? Certainly not me, I’d rather play the game!

I don’t want to ever see this flawed trash again...

This movie really isn't that good. The animation, though "modern" at first glance, is sub-par. The facial expressions and body movements are jerky, and very artificial looking. The quality of character animations and action animations is terrible. The backgrounds look terrific at times (especially during stills, which shows the quality of the budget more than the animation), but the characters are just so stiff and pathetic looking that it ruins the whole movie; the animation is better suited for a Saturday morning cartoon than an anime movie.

The sound isn't very good either; action sounds are well done; but the soundtrack was fairly terrible. The voice actors might have been better had the animation been able to better showcase the facial expressions and body language of the characters; howver as it stands the acting just seemed trite and overdone. I didn't feel any emotion for the characters and none of their attempts at acting could change my feelings.

The story is pretty pathetic really. It is the same "humans get in WWIII, create androids as better humans, and then it is decided that humanity is destroying itself and the Earth, and needs to be replaced" with the stock "militant humans who hate robots and try to wipe them out" guys as well. The entire thing is so cliche and has been done (better) in dozens of other anime.

Also, this anime is very shallow and lacks much complexity or depth; there is no political manuevering between the Prime Minister and the General or the Elders, no real "plans" thought out or enacted, it is all straightforward and simple.

The characters arn't that good, and are vey cliche, just like the entire movie itself. None of the characters really engrained themselves in my mind; hell, I just finished watching the movie 5 minutes ago and can only remember the Prime Minister, Athena's name and the name of a side-character called Hitomi. Neither of the two main characters, the girl-fighter or the guy-robot, were very deep or complex, and neither developed or grew over the course of the movie.

I would place little value in this movie; I wouldn't reccomend it to anyone, and I would not rewatch it, rent it again, or but it, ever. There are many animes and movies out there that perform this plot better.

I have little to no knowledge regarding the Manga or OVA's prior to this movie, but I will review it as best I can.

Appleseed was... ok. It undoubtedly diserves attention for it's amazing animation and perfect sound track, but it lack somewhat in story and character.

The story is still decent however; those who have rated it below 6 obviously payed little attention. It's a bit different than your typical anime, although the main theme itself has appeared in many other titles. It takes awhile to figure out what the actual plot is, (about half way through the movie) at which point the plot becomes more interesting and easier to follow.

As I've said, the animation and music are incredible. The first 10 minutes were enough to keep me captivated for the entire movie, even through the boring parts (which are little less than numerous).

I've watched it a few times now, I'd say it's definetly a must watch at least once, however it might loose it's appeal afterwards.

Being a fan of masamune shirows work I started watching this movie with great expectance. And yes as expected the main story is pretty good, but not suitable for a movie. The first thing you will noticed is that the entire movie is done with CG, in other words: computer animation. At first this doesn't really bother but then you start noticing the flaws, i'll explain more of this in the animation part of my review. The whole feel of this movie is rather tacky and cheesy.

If you want an anime where you only want to see the animation, then this is it. Outstanding 3DCG throughout with cell shaded characters. No simple2 D animation at all. Unfortunately the story is not good. Imagine watching a movie half way thru to the end. This is what this anime feels like, the backgroudn is very very shaky, and looks like everything starts without any sort of backgroudn till the end.

This movie is a bit of a mess.

Visuals
For the vast majority of the movie, I found the visuals to be breathtaking. I thought about some obvious comparisons with "Ghost In The Shell: Innocence" and "FF7: Advent Children". Like "Innocence", Appleseed uses a futuristic setting and tone, but in this case applies it to 3D models not too dissimilar to "Advent Children". And whilst the 3D work is, I feel, a better way to express the futuristic enviroment than Innocence, it doesn`t have the same high standard of atmosphere as Innocence. Also, the 3D work itself is not on par with Advent Children. This is especially true with the character textures - I think that the cell-shaded method does not come off well for them, and I found it a constant irritation throughout the movie. In fact, it gave the characters less credibility in their actions and emotions. The positives in the visuals are in the form of the animation - it`s fluidity and general sheen are excellent. The style of the movie also shows a "coolness" quality to it - using a few bullet time effects in the action scenes; and often showcasing the visual design with the gorgeous cityscape and techincal gadgets and gizmos.

Sound
I really thought that the sound was the best aspect of Appleseed. Whilst not all of the musical scores were to my taste, it had befitting music to go along with the scenes, and I liked the opening and closing themes too. The voices of the characters were fine, and helped to lessen the annoyance of their cell-shaded visuals. The sound effects were top notch, with the right ambiance in the right scenes too.

Story
This was not a movie with a well executed plot. The subject matter was nothing bad, and even being cliched it had a half-decent chance of working out okay. But alas, no. The movie felt like it was produced as an excuse to test out the visuals rather than revolving around a good script. It was almost arrogant in presuming that the viewer would think it "cool" and therefore it didn`t need a good plot. I think the story was rushed to some degree and cut corners in setting scenes. To establish a premise and background to the Appleseed world, there were just large monologues which were far too contrived to explain to the viewer what was going on. It did not feel credible within the movie.

Another thing was the random clips of the past that were mixed into the movie. Most of the time it wasn`t obvious that the flashbacks were actually flashbacks until way late into them. And I can`t help but think that the main purpose of the flashabcks was to explain the nature of the bonds between the main heroine and the people around her, but in my opinion it failed to adequately do so (see below). The story contained only mediocre revelations and I found it in general to be a bit of a bore.

Characters
The movie failed in keeping me passionate about the lead character. I felt as though I was observing her without any interest in her outcome. I don`t think that the creators could find a good balance between what they wanted her to be and be perceived as. She`s supposedly a badass fighting girl on paper, but in reality the impression she gives is not worth the hype. She goes through the full range of emotions and behaiviour, but I constantly was questioning why I should like and support her as the star of the movie.

The secondary characters seemed quite bland, and to only be there to take up some screen time and space. The were no emotional bonds formed with any of them that seem justified. Together with the calamity of the cell-shaded visuals, the characters don`t come off well in the movie, and only seem present to keep whatever plot, moving along.

Value
I would only watch this movie again for the odd action scene here and there or to admire some of the wide views of the city. Otherwise, what is there to come back for? Certainly not the plot of characters.

Enjoyment
I found this movie to be below average. The general visuals, and the excellent sound were the main cause of joy; the story and characters were the main cause of sorrow. I`d recommend it to those who want to see something a bit visually different from the norm, but I don`t think it has enough substance, so wouldn`t advise getting your hopes up.

Appleseed Movie is entertaining and visually fascinating. While it doesn't blow my mind, I think it's a must-see for those interested in modern 3D animation.

The worst thing about this movie is the soundtrack. For me, it destroyed most of the atmosphere - even the second time i saw the film. Could be a 8 oder 9 in Enjoyment otherwise.

This was one amazing animation, but not without its flaws.

First of all, let's address the merits. The animation is superb, the attention to detail could almost rival that of Advent Children, except for the CG created characters, but it's easy to overlook that after a while. The action scenes were breathtaking too. The producers tried to recreate the world of Appleseed and the attention to details really delivers the package.

The sound was rather forgettable, being your typical rock music during fight scenes...nothing too special. The bmg and opening theme was okay, but not annoying.

The story is simply incredible. In a mere 1 hour and 45 minutes, the movie was able to weave together a story about technological feats, love, betrayal, forgiveness and courage. The complexity of the story is overwhelming during the first watch, which is why I recommend watching it a second or third time to catch all the details. It's really fun.

The main character was developed well, since most of the show was devoted to her feelings and background. Unfortunately, the other characters were less developed and therefore pales in comparison with the main character. But given the time restrain and the amount of material they had to cover, it's pretty good for a movie. Keep in mind that this is a movie, not a series.

The value and enjoyment is high. You will enjoy the thrill of this action and Sci-Fi thriller. If you enjoyed watching Advent Children, you should give this a try. A nicely done movie.

Clearly, a lot of money was spent on this film, and it was money well spent in terms of the mind blowing visuals and sounds. However, an overemphasis on visually appealing fight scenes
detracted (in most cases anyway) from what could of been a very meaningful anime, instead of one with only brief moments of thematic significance.

Impressive CG, not sure about the story itself though – very Hollywood action with the usual themes of anime movies.

Involving things about human race, the imperfections of humans and a new races as well as the differences between humans and this new race. It’s a formula I have seen many times – the sci-fi vision of the future.

The animations was mostly great, there were a few times where the CG looked rather amateur. But otherwise, it was fantastic. If you don’t like all the CG though, then you’ll probably hate this.

Sound was excellent too, what you’d expect from a movie, a blend of instrumental tunes as well as the more modern techno and hip sounds.

I didn’t like the first Appleseed, and to be honest, I didn’t really like this one either, all I wanted was a good story for I have seen so many movies with good animation but a lesser storyline. It felt like Wonderful Days for me, which was also a disappointment.

If you like Appleseed, mech, sci-fi or futuristic genres, then check this out, if not, I probably wouldn’t bother, not as confusing as Ghost In The Shell at all, but a repeated storyline which has been quite exhausted now.

hmm.. This is one hard anime to rate. I admit, the visuals in Appleseed is top notched. The world looks absolutely amazing. The Badside where Duenan comes from has been well-potrayed as a decaying city, whilst Olympus looks exactly like the manga, if not better. Only complaints? The cell shaded characters simply do not fit the stunning environment well, plus Olympus was a little metallic/shinny for my taste.

Sound? I like the OP and Ed, and I don't think the casting person could have picked any better seiyuus. Period.

Now, story, value and enjoyment wise,... I dunno. I just did not enjoy it as much as I enjoyed the manga. Sure, Duenan and the other characters look cooler (good bye, big foreheads!), but unfortunately, they seem more like puppets than real living characters. Don't get me wrong, there were some really well-cheorographed movements, but the characters simply weren't *acting*. Big as their eyes may be (nice irises, btw), there were little emotion showed. And even those looked fake.

One thing that (IMHO) made me fall in love with the manga was the character interaction and humour, whilst the action merely helped pull the story along. In the movie, there were little to no hint of humour, and there's this really dark tone swirling around each characters. Briareos is cold as ever, and Duenan is not the playful yet deadly girl i knew.

oh well, these things happen. Over all, (once again, IMO) it seems that the creators were simply selling a graphical masterpiece to the audience, instead of selling the story. Little-to-no character development, terrible (physical and emotional, NOT voice)acting. As I said: What we have here is a graphical masterpiece, wrapped around terrible directing and storytelling. Well done, cheorographers and graphics guys(animators, modeller, etc), shame on you directors and producers, oh, and you too, scriptwriter.

This Appleseed movie is a visual spectacular. The animation is amazing and the music solid. It has a very good storyline too, albeit an unoriginal one because this is a remake. Perhaps I was lucky to have not caught the 1988 original one, thus being able to enjoy the storyline more fully. I would think anyone who is watching Appleseed for the first time will enjoy it while fans of the old Appleseed will also enjoy this huge visual overhaul.

A very well done anime movie all around. I saw it first in the theater with english dubbing and it wasnt bad either. I prefer the Japanese voice actors of course, but would not mind to watch it occassionally in English. The soundtrack kicks major ass. The animation speaks for itself. It is amazing in such detail and quality. The story is a recycled one, but it had great surprising elements and it was always interesting to watch. I am glad that I own it on dvd.

Overall, I think the best way to describe this movie is that it knew where it was going, but it didn’t quite get there. The animation was spectacular and breathtaking but the story fell short. A hundred some odd years into the future and humans are still killing each other and blowing up everything. To prevent the complete annihilation of all humankind, Bioroids are created to “balance the scales” so to say. Co-habiting with these Bioroids has mellowed out some of us bloodthirsty humans but things are still far from the Utopia that our dear and beloved leaders dream of. The story itself is nothing original, but it did have potential. However, the dreadful pacing added to the fact that some of the important elements of the plot were run roughshod over, destroyed the backbone of the story.
