| one of the reasons old cartoons were so good and memorable was that many of them were adaptations from popular and not so popular novels and childrens novels. The most perfect way for younger viewers to be introduced to literature if they're going to spend their time on TV.
Before the advent of stimulating and thought-provoking masterpieces like Spongebob, Dragon Ball or Pokemon and the HD video game consoles, there was a time when you could enjoy reading a book as a child.
These series also contributed to my interest in literature.
One of them is the popular "Dog of Flanders". There is a series of 52 episodes that is considered as one of the best and after having watched it I can confirm that too. But since the original novel is just a few pages long, I think the movie is a good adaptation and in some respects stays close to the original dramatic and touching moments of the novel.
There are some differences with the novel that were necessary to widen the story to 52 episodes. And the age difference for obvious reasons to omit any sign of romance.
As others mentioned the title has similarities with the story "The Little Match Girl" but for me it resembles more "Call of the Wild" though it doesnt reach the magic of that novel.
Now this movie is labeled as a family movie. But it is very dramatic to be enjoyed by children and adults. It does not offer the humour of other family movies like those of Disney, though some fun moments are there. Instead the viewer gets drama and cruely to both humans and animals. So younger viewers will not remain uninfluenced. I saw the English dub which was very good, considering how butchered many dubs turn into. But the voice actors were well chosen. I watched then the Japanese version with English subs. It is some minutes longer and it shows a little more of the romance between Nello and Alois. But regarding the animal cruelty scenes the Japanese version doesnt feature them either because they were present only in the series.
Animation and music are superb, perfectly fit to the era's settings. 19th century Antwerb is nicely designed as well as the people and settings.
There are other adaptations of the novel but this animated one has some memorable moments that arent deemed very commercial to be promoted. Who wants a child to be influenced by watching a dog getting beaten. Hence this movie isnt that popular and hard to find.
But I'd suggest reading the short novel after you watch this film.
At a time where worldwide everything that matters are entertainment and box office hits in the visual arts department, movies like this show that there are exceptions.
One of the best and most memorable movies, especially for younger viewers.

| Dieser Film ist ein großartiges Werk, tief, emotional und mitreissend. Besonders das Verhältniss des Hauptcharakters zu seinen Mitmenschen kommt unheimlich überzeugend rüber, man baut eine richtige Beziehung zu ihm auf und man freut und leidet mit ihm bis zum Ende. Die Geschichte ist realistisch und das sorgt dafür das sie einem sehr nahe geht. Am Ende wird man mit den Tränen ringen und mit Wehmut im Herzen zurück gelassen. Sowas schaffen nur Meisterwerke und Flanders no Inu gehört ohne Zweifel dazu.

| In a small country house lives a young boy with his grandfather. He lives a calm life, even though they are very poor. His best friend is a girl whom is not really alowed to play with him because she got rich parents. The young boy want to become an artist, and is very skilled with drawing for being his age.
