| Madlax is a series I got from one of the recent ADV UK sales for a total of £14 - £2 per volume. I couldn't say no when anime is as overpriced as it is in the UK.
While I did enjoy watching Madlax, my feelings for the show are somewhat mixed. I'd most certainly recommend it to any bored any anime fan due it having a good story and simply being very enjoyable to watch, but it's not the best anime out there.
Good:
-- The story is well thought out and all comes together nicely at the end. I would've rather the story stayed away from the supernatural stuff, but...
-- Although not at the level of her work in .hack//SIGN, Yuki Kajiura's music is once again a joy to listen to.
-- The art and animation is good, as you'd expect from one of the more recent series. It's also worth mentioning that Madlax is widescreen when it wasn't common for anime back then.
-- An extra called 'Conversations with SSS' is included with every volume. It's basically some fun done by the English VA's, all of them involving phone calls (or pranks) shared between SSS (the guy who gives Madlax jobs) and another random member of the cast. They're very funny during the first 3 or 4 volumes, hence me putting this here, but they do become more stupid than funny later on.
Bad:
-- The pacing is just too damn slow around the middle of the series. It's fairly obvious that a huge amount of the content was put in only to extend Madlax to 26 episodes.
-- For a show set in a warring nation, with one of the female leads being the best agent in that nation, the action in Madlax is handled very badly. I felt near to no excitement during most of the action sequences.
-- The 'rivalry' between Madlax and Limelda felt WAAAAY too forced. They meet numerous times during the series, Madlax letting her escape after outclassing her each time for no reason. The final fight between them was so poorly done I wondered if it was meant to be comical.
-- I didn't really feel much for the majority of the cast at the end. Outside of a few, such as Carrossa, the cast of Madlax is made up of one dimensional characters.

| "The Truth is pain. Pain is sorrow. Sorrow is a spiral. The spiral is the human fate."
Madlax has a story which should appear original and interesting from the first glance. It also has characters who could seem to have high potential from the first glance. Unfortunately, first glance remains first glance, as a whole, this show is reminiscent of a failure. Though it still retains some strong points.
If you are keen on action shows and you have nothing to watch at the moment, check out Madlax, there are some cool fights around. It also tries to tell a philosophical story, but its coherence leaves somewhat to be desired. Either way, if you are one of those "idea analyzation machines" like me, you could give Madlax's lines a glance.

| Seems that every few years Beetrain gets the guys together and they do a girls with guns. Which is a good thing, cause I like girls with guns. The one with the short hair always has the memory loss. And the long haired one is the professional gunslinger that helps her get it back. Along the way there are mysteries to solve and bad guys to gun down. Animation is good. Madlax looks very cool when she frags the opposition. Sound is excellent. There are some very cool tunes in this series. The Story is an engaging mystery and the characters are all interesting enough. Margaret Burton admittedly doesn't share the same planet with the rest of us, but there you go. A final note on memory flashes: Nobody and I mean nobody needs to see the same memory flashback more than twice, in a 26 episode series. Twice is enough, thank you BeeTrain. Other than that little problem I enjoyed this must have for girls with guns fans a lot.

| Animation - As to be expected from Bee Train, the animation isn't amazing, but it's unique and very easy on the eyes. On complaint (that didn't effect the score) is that some of the characters have their mouths awfully high on the face with a big eound chin. Not pretty.
Sound - Wow. The sound was fantastic. I actually really liked the BGM, but didn't care much for the OP. The sound should meet if not excede Bee Train music standards.
Story - Lots of mystery, but thats how I like it. One thing that made the story interesting (kept it from being boring) was that there are two main characters that the story switches back and forth forth, untill they meet in the end.
Character - The characters are pretty good, except for maybe Margaret, she is sub par. She is pretty boring and never really in it, supposedly due to the mysterious acident 12 years ago.
Value - I would listen to the music, and maube go back to re-watch several scenes, but probably not the entire series, since a lot of the enjoyment came out of the mystery.

| Saw the first 12 episodes about 2 years ago, and put off watching the rest of the series until recently. The animation quality was phenomenal. I loved the shading and dark background the animators gave the show. It's a great show, but it does have it's share of minor disturbances.
My primary concerns were the sometimes major scenes of flashbacks that popped up now and then towards the end of scenes that had happened earlier during the series. Also, it was annoying how the characters always repeated names in it's full context. Margaret Burton, Carroseur Dawn, Fliday Monday. It became repetitiously annoying at some points. As well, the music sometimes felt out of place. There's a few phenomenal musical pieces, but they felt misplaced in a few spots.
The minor grievances I have with the show though doesn't detract much from the show as a whole. Soundtrack is one of the better ones out there and the story does feel to bog down now and then. The characters didn't seem to grow on me much, and I'm not sure they grew much at all. Margaret felt stale throughout until the last episode, though that's attributed to the plot.
Hmm... seems like I have a lot to complain about but really, this is one anime that grabs the viewer from the start. It ocassionaly let's the viewer loose, but does a good enough job of ratcheting the viewer back again.

| As has been stated before, this spin-off of the "Noir" genre is similar in many ways, including the animation and the two main characters Margaret Burton and Madlax. However, beyond the existence of the two main female leads and the use of guns, the Madlax series and Noir are completely different.
Madlax is deep, complex, and extremely mysterious; it is not until the final one or two episodes that you will finally realize what exactly is going on. And even in the end you will probably be a little confused over what just happened and why.
The story moves rather slowly, and it is very interesting to see how the two main characters paths eventually intertwine. While this does create a bit of boredom here and there as you wait for things to pan out, and creates a bit of confusion and frustration as you wait for the answers to be revealed, for the most part it is a tense and exciting experience.
Another point about Madlax is the supernatural or magical aspect of the series. While there are no "spells" or magical attacks or wands or anything, there is a definite overtone of the supernatural to the series, especially towards the end of the series.
The characters are all very complex and interesting; Madlax herself and Margaret were by far my favorite characters. I especially enjoyed watching Margaret due to the parrallels between her and another one of my favorite anime characters from Noir.
The animation is good, and the soundtrack is solid. During fighting scenes the gun fights are especially unique and the realistic sounds during battles give the anime a more realistic feel all around.
Overall, a good series, though difficult to completely understand and hard to stick with in the beggining.

| Eh, the animenfo description for this anime seems a lot more interesting than i found this anime to be. Although I only watched up to episode 9, I really didn't find much motivation to continue to watch it further.
Why? Despite the great animation (made in 2004) and interesting sound bits (very similar to NOIR, but with more beat to it), the story left me guessing too much without exactly any clues to unravel what the meaning of everything is. Furthermore, the character Madlax is about the only beacon of light in this anime. She's cute, blonde, and kicks butt (but not that much butt cuz the action is boring). However, the other characters plagued with their amnesia are lifeless and uninteresting. This lack of great character really killed this anime for me.
In the end (of episode 9) i just didn't care for what was going on to continue watching to the end. Someone want to share a spoiler ?

| As has been stated by many reviewers, Madlax is basically the younger siblings to Noir, Bee Train's previous "femme fatale" success. Though the similarities between the two are obvious, Madlax truly shines in the differences it has with its sister series.
While the story (basically a Platonic quest to discover what is really means to be human--and that's just the bare bones of it) is nothing terribly exciting and loaded with nonsensical psychobabble, Bee Train's skill lies not in original plot, but in a disturbingly human way of treating the story. The fact that the two female leads are so strikingly different from each other allows the viewer to see the story from two very distinct perspectives. When these two characters finally meet, it is at the end of the series--which may or may not appeal to you, depending on how you wish to view Bee Train's treatment of humanity. As for me, I like that the characters meet so late in the series. It gives the viewers plenty of time to attach to the girls separately; they are treated as independent entities, rather than as a united pair.
Concerning the "rip off" quality of Madlax: rather than say it is a copy of Noir, think of it as a more refined Noir. Where Noir was romanticized and fluid, Madlax is darker, grittier, and, indeed, reminded me of the "Dark Deco" days of Batman the Animated Series.
Another thing that Bee Train does well: Gun dancing. Seriously, these people know how to make a fight look beautiful without using cheap "fake speed" animation tricks. When I see action sequences, I could care less about bloodshed and gore. I could care less about "special attacks." What I want to see is visually artistic, stylistic movement. I want to see a dance. And Bee Train provides that in Madlax. Noir was the brainchild for turning the Walther PPK into a close-quarters melee weapon; Madlax is the opus. They really outdid themselves in their animation, and considering that their previous success was Noir, that's saying something.
Many complain that Noir, .Hack, and Madlax all have slow build-up. I argue that all the other shows people watch don't have enough. Bee Train may sometimes push the envelope on pacing, but I'd rather see a show that takes the time to let viewers get to know the characters rather than simply dive into the climax. Besides, if Bee Train's shows have slow build-up, they always have a quick climax, making the whole trip worthwhile--after going through the tumultuous plot, you head right for the deumont.
Overall: if you liked Noir, you'll like Madlax. If you didn't, you probably won't get anything out of this one.

| This anime has been compared to NOIR a lot, because its from the same creators. However one thing I don't understand is the accusation that this is a pure ripoff of Noir. Not being a big fan of Noir (which I think is overrated), I was hesitant to watch this. However I was pleasantly surprised that this turned out to be more unique and better than Noir.
The story might have some similarities to Noir but it is very different in it's core.
The characters for one thing are much better. In fact one of the best characters in anime I have witnessed. The characterisation is nothing short of brilliant. Madlax herself is the most unique agent/assasin I have seen in animes. She is deadly killer but right from the first episode just from the way she is drawn especially the eyes hint at something more deep and even sad. Other characters like Vanessa, Margaret etc. are all great.
The only problem is the slow pacing of the story, which is a similar problem in Noir. That can get frustrating from time to time. The story however kept me glued to my seat inspite of the minor annoyance of plot progression. The pyschobabble for the most part was thankfully kept at a minimum and wasn't so bad.
The series is wonderful and definitely worth a look. Fans of Noir will find the similarities to be a lack of inspiration as a setback. But for myself I think this was a better more polished version of Noir if you can call it that.

| While the similarities to Noir are obvious, and stated in a thousand reviews already its the differences that make Madlax memorable.
Though Noir is my favorite series, Madlax is much deeper and darker. It hopes to make you think philosphoically about what is meant by "self", time, right and wrong etc.
Madlax contains what they expect to be a major plot twist at the end. Unfortnately it wasn't a surprise at all. As already mentioned in other reviews it becomes very obvious somewhere before the half way point of the series. It was rather disappointing to know that that was the major twist.
Overall the ending is strong considering how poorly most writers wrap up a series. Alls well that ends well.

| Madlax starts out boring, but those with patience will be rewarded with great build-up and a great story. To say it best, the other side of Noir.
Let me start off with saying that the comparison with Noir is obvious. However, that comparison ends really soon when the key characters of Madlax get their background revealed. They are what make Madlax great. After being bored to death by Madlax' first episodes, the darker part of the anime starts to gain the upper hand. In this, Madlax is very well executed. The fun starts when the key characters gain background. I was constantly trying to reason out what the possible link between the characters was, as it was clear that they were all in one way or another related to eachother. around episode 16, this question was haunting me, and although every episode provided an answer to some questions, even more new questions arose. The very best part is that the storywriter actually manages to decieve the viewer. Not all things are as they are presented within Madlax. This is something I have not seen in anime for a while, so I really enjoyed this. However, all good things come to an end. Madlax often hints to the supernatural during the anime, but the ending seemed a bit over the top. On the other hand, I do believe that it was just about the only way that the story could actually make sense, and even now I'm not completely sure if it does. What I can say is, that the ending is a bit like the infamous TV ending of Evangelion. But don't let this scare you off, as it is far better executed.
Action and animation-wise, Noir is being thoroughly owned by Madlax. The fact that the character Madlax seems invincible actually has an explanation and the action in itself is bearable.
But what grabbed my attention was the detail. Very subtle, the fact that our characters are merely puppets of fate (I can not state this defferently without spoiling any more), is animated. There are more things like this, that seem out of place at first, but a couple of episodes later on suddenly makes sense...if you haven't forgotten it.
One tiny thing that does hamper the animation, and also the story, is the amount of flashbacks. Unlike Noir, the flashbacks usually serve a purpose, but in the final episodes it was still repeated a bit too much.
But the best way in which one can enjoy Madlax is the sound. Kajiura Yuki has topped herself with the soundtrack of Madlax. It's simply perfect. It flows with the anime and creates a superb atmosphere. Accompanying that are two OST's, which reflect the anime into every little detail. For sound, Noir had already lost its place to Escaflowne, but Madlax features sound that can rival Escaflowne -- and I'm talking perfection when I say that.
So, in conclusion, Madlax starts out slow...like a snail. But when it picks up, it becomes a cheetah. The only downside to Madlax I can think of is the ending, but even that I can not speak certain of.
Watch Madlax. At the very least, get the OST's...And get the anime while you're at it.

| Madlax is one of the most humorless animes you will ever see. It is impossible to find a scene to smile at. Unmistakeable seriousness. Overall, I would say that the style of art matched the story very well. The characters were beautifully drawn - looked like a lot of other characters - but beautifully drawn. It was not 'captivating' as to where I waited for the next episode, but not the most excellent anime in the world. Very action packed, but SLOW. If you want to watch a very serious anime, in which the story makes just about NO sense. Check out Madlax. If you find yourself in possesion of a copy of this anime, you might want to skip to a couple of the action scenes, just for the sake of it. Too serious for comfort - but very well drawn.
Music - all I can say is that it is strangely good...........

| Well, well... A new anime from Bee Train. When I first heard about it I was expecting a good story and nice characters with depth. I really enjoyed Noir but hated .hack//SIGN.
To the review: The most dissapointing fact is that almost the whole story is a ripp-off (if one can call it when it's the same studio behind the original) from Noir:
*A mysterious asassin who can dogde bullets and kill instantly.
*A silent, dumb girl who doesn't have a memory of her past.
*Fragments of a memory are displayed and later new details drop in as the mystery reveals.
*The place looks like France.
*A secret maffia sect.
*A coming ritual with women dressed as the romans.
Not only is the story almost an identical copy of Noir. One can see the animation and music which could likely come from Noir (it makes the ripp-off even greater just in this case, it wouldn't be of notice if the story was fresh-new).
Repeated stories aren't new. Many series have taken points from other series. Just look at Rahxephon which almost had as many points as Madlax ripped from Evangelion. But I think it's totally meaningless repeating a story from ones earlier work. It shows a loss of inspiration.
One good thing with the music is that there aren't two couple of songs played at least one time in each episode in order to completely destroy the value (as the Salva Nos and Canta Per Me from Noir).
Madlax has some really good songs as they lift up the atmosphere. Not least expected from Kajiura Yuki.
One meets many mysteries during the first episode. Already during the opening I found a hint to the conclusion of the relationship between Margaret and Madlax (it shouldn't be this easy solving a mystery!). During the opening they are together as if they were partners, but during the episode there aren't a single thing they have in common. This means they have even more in common than what we should be aware of.
It's not funny knowing one have a fragment of the conclusion and have to wait till the very last episode and then find out one was right all along.
The effect was supposed to be "I could never have imagined THAT!" But since one could understand one small puzzle the impact of the solution wasn't that effective.
I really hope Bee Train comes up with something new and fresh because they have the capability if one thinks of Noir. The last thing I want is an anime ripp-off from the crappy .hach//SIGN.

| I watched this entire series as it was comming out, and I have an overall good impression of it. Its one of those animes that isn't anything too special, but at least it is always interesting enough to keep your attention and wandering about the next episode.
I must also point out, however, that I hadn't seen Nori before I watched this. After looking into that anime (had some of the same producers on it), I was kinda shocked how rediclously similar some of the scenes with a girl standing around saying things like "hito wo koroshta..." were. I also would like to point out that the man with the mask bears almost no difference to that guy with a mask in Gundam SEED in my oppinion.
Of course, any little bit of borrowing and stuff isn't a fatal flaw, but I have to say this series doesn't go too far to stand on its own. But it still does have its originality in places, and the fight scenes always do kick ass. Overall, I don't think you'll be dissapointed with this one, but don't hold too high expectations for it.

| If the over-the-top action sequences in Noir were crowd pleasers, BeeTrain came to the obvious, if somewhat misguided, conclusion that taking it to the next level would win over even more fans. Frankly, for me, it just doesn't work. They try so hard to make the gun sequences unbelievably cool, that they just fall into the unbelievable catagory.
The suspension of disbelief that worked well in Noir has been thrown out, in favor of action that draws more snickers than drools from myself.
The animation and plot don't beget many complaints, although the pacing is a bit slow at times. It's a shame though, as I watched this for the gunplay, and was bitterly disappointed.

| After viewing all the reviews about this title, I did not expect much when I picked this up for viewing.
What I got was way beyond my expectations.
Animation-wise, it's pretty decent. Plenty of action scenes although the lack of blood during the shootouts annoyed me at first. It should be noted that some scenes have a haunting quality which hint at the anime's later turn into epic territory i.e. the night scene of a war-torn street "haunted" by two glowing ghost-like children.
The music is excellent. So much so that I intend to buy the OST as soon as I could locate it.
The story is where this anime shines. Granted, the early episodes were nothing exceptional i.e. Madlax taking up a mission where she mowed down entire platoons without sustaining so much as a scratch. But the story later shifts to the search for answers to mysteries of her past and that of another main character, Margaret Burton, a spacey teenager. I've watched the entire series, and was very surprised by the story's later mystical developments i.e. life after death, distortion in space/time continuum, inhuman powers etc. The apocalyptic finale itself wouldn't be out of place in a Final Fantasy game. Being an Evangelion/Xenogears fan, I was and still am much impressed. The ending is satisfying but certain minor plot points are left unexplained.
The Character designs are well done and attractive. Character development is good on the whole, especially on Madlax and Margaret, but certain key characters' backgrounds such as Imeralda, an expert sniper whose obsessive pursuit of Madlax smacks of shoujo-ai, are not fully fleshed out, though.
On a whole, Madlax is an enjoyable piece of Japanese animation which started out looking like a Noir-clone but ended up a spectacular epic with its own unique storyline.

so,I gave a try, is the same creator of .hack//SIGN,maybe will be Excellent as that incerdible anime
Bee train arts are all original, deep story, weird characters, Excellent Soundtrack (made by Yuki kajiura),Very well done animation,no blood, but also very strong action,Madlax is not an exception, but have really more fanservice and more explosion than Noir (also, more action)
wellm, I going to admit,Madlax have really more fanservice and more explosion than Noir (also, more action)
Well, i didn´t see all the serie, but in this point, the anime is really pretty enjoyable.
I reccomed to the Fans of Bee-train productions (Noir,.hack//SIGN,Avenger)
