(Froth-Bite fansubs, good quality overall)

Except Astro Boy (or was it Jetter Mars?)
I hadnt seen or read much of Tezuka's works, except his earlier animation.

Having also seen the memorable Hinotori Cosmozone movie I thought the series would live up to the movie's excellence. Unfortunately the first half of the series, though it was good, it hadnt something appealing to me, except the BGM and the SFX. I liked the first episode though.

Also I didnt expect that all the characters would reappear with the same character design in all the episodes.

After ep. 7 the pace changes and after the medieval Japan arc, the final two post-apocalyptic episodes reminded me of the atmosphere of the classic Hinotori movie. Ep 2-6 felt like an eternity, even after having skipped the intro and end credits.

Ep. 7-13 were for me much better than the first half. This series had an air of uniqueness, though I was a little annoyed that the phoenix didnt have a greater role. I havent read the manga so I dont know about the complete story and how ep. 12-13 are connected with the movie.

The music make this anime one of the best. From the OP to the melancholic ED, the SFX, the orchestral score, this anime is memorable. I cant complain here.

If you're a Tezuka fan this is a must-watch, though dont expect it to be as good as the classic movie. Also if you like unique series give it a try

Wow! This was quite a surprising show, from what I've seen of it. Since it's still going on in Japan, I only have about 3 episodes and am going off of that. That said, what I've seen so far is absolutely wonderful. True, the chara designs are not what most people are used to in anime today, but they are very familiar for Osamu Tezuka fans. Some might be turned off by the rather 'innocent' stylings, but I personally thought they were even better than the comic version. And the soundtrack is *amazing!* That is probably the best thing, besides how smooth and nice the animation is.
I will be watching for more of this series.

Unlike the common format of story-telling in anime, Hinotori seems to tell a story spanning a larger period of time building on characters as time progresses.
The animation is crisp but the style seems almost childish. This may turn many off but in contrast it is used to tell a much darker, grittier story revolving around the ambitions of man.

The show consists of short story arcs within the same universe, but at different periods of time. The quality of storytelling varies from arc to arc. I began to lose a great deal of interest after during the second arc.

"Hinotori" The Phoenix.
The story is set in a primitive era, where the weak bow to the strong, and the sword is the law.
This era centre around a country called "Hi". The Country of Fire, named for the Volcano which sits in the heart of it. Home of the Phoenix who is born from its firey depth. The myth goes that anyone who can capture and drink the blood of the phoenix will be imortal.
The main character are Sarutahiko Chief Warrior of the Country Yama no Tai, Uzume slave woman of a conquered land, Hinaku native of the Country of Hi and wife of Guzuri Native of the country of Yama no Tai sent to hunt for the Phoenix for the Himiko, Priestess Queen of The Yama no Tai and Negi, Brother of Hinaku.

I have seen 3 episode and so far it is absolutely captivating. It closest relative is "Mermaid Forest".

A tale of those foolish mortals who seek immortality, even from the Opening animation you undestood what the Phoenix represent. Life, it is a being that can transcend dimensions, and time. It is a creature free of desires and sin which is why it could reach the place of the Buddha, it is imortal, but also it represent mortality as it will die in the heat of fire and be reborn anew.

Its story I can tell will spend considerably skipping, of how Guzuri will survive with Hinaku to redeem his sins for leading the Warriors of Yama no Tai to genocide the natives of Hi, and create a new nation and capture the Phoenix for them, and that wounds can be healed over time and life is given to those who has the strength to go on dispite the challenge. While Sarutahiko rebels, to save Negi who initially tried all he could to kill Sarutahiko but realise he is too weak. Eventually forgives him as he was only following Himeko orders. Sarutahiko so shows his reason for saving Negi because he reminds him of himself as he was a slave from a conquered nation brought up to serve a greedy and foolish despot. Sarutahiko later meets Uzume who cunningly disguise herself as a ugly woman to prevent being raped when she was capture. She later saves Sarutahiko from death of her captors by forcing him to marry her, but she also fell in love with him for protecting Negi who he had adopted as his son in the face of overwhelming force.
As you can see it has alot of protential, and the multi-story paths. Yet the phoenix is what binds these story together ,the search for life, imortality and progression.
Recommend must watch!

Seen only episode 1 to date

Hi no Tori (translated literally as Firebird/Bird of Fire/Fire's bird -- losely as Phoenix) is, to date, about a phoenix that is borne out of a volcano. Meanwhile, a nearby (primative) villiage has found a a foreign physician that had washed upon a shore nearby who becomes interested by the appearance of the phoenix.

However, just to start out, the animation is quite amazing with smooth cels and awesome CG to enhance the visuals. The story has also started on a strong foot, but the story has yet to explain where the Hi no Tori fits in.

Will update as the series progresses.

At the moment: a recommended watch
