(based on Anime-Flux fansub who've done an excellent translation overall)

This is the first anime I've seen that recognizes fansubs and even apologizes to the fansubbers and the anime viewers who watch fansubs in case a second season isnt going to be produced. So the producers gained my respect for that alone.
I wonder if that comment alone could make the title available for licensing in the West.

BPS was an enjoyable series that featured some nice computer action, especially in the first 2 episodes and also ecchi jokes that, though they werent very funny, managed to be quite enjoyable, even if they werent for everyone's taste. But dont expect to watch anime without the need to get used to that kind of jokes.
The episodes didnt get boring, because of the 12-13 minute format. If they lasted full 30 minutes I'd have yawned a lot from the very start. The short time limit and the very enjoyable opening and ending themes and the previews as well (what does Mao Mao mean?!) make the series worth watching for an enjoyable, if forgettable, 2,5 hours.
The final minutes, parodizing Conan the Barbarian, made me laugh a lot.

There isnt really a story but the same motif occurs in everyone of the 5 circles. The first circle wasnt that interesting but once I got introduced to the characters and the pacing and when the true OP and ED themes kicked in, it got me hooked till the final episode.

I liked all the characters, even if they dont speak a lot and found the relation between Shirase and his sister/cousin or whatever very cute and funny. THe other american-japanese girl was also a nice addition and the transvenstite and blonde girl in the final episodes guaranteed funny ecchi moments. Too bad the girl that appears in the intro and in the final episode doesnt talk at all.

Animation was good and fluid and made the characters even funnier. The backgrounds were also very colourfull.

The sound consisted of electronic music most of the time and fitted in the genre.

Fun is guaranteed, just dont expect to watch this a second time for some time. Except if you want to watch the good OP and ED themes again, or download them on MP3 (something I did)

Trying to figure out something to say about this series... oh, here it comes:

I initially thought it might be a funny series to watch. I'm nerd enough to like stuff about genious computer hackers. The three first episodes were okay: some fancy computer tricks, explosions, weird humor and loliness. Could dig this. Watching the second three episode installment had already changed my mind. The lolijoke worked once, the weird humor was actually rather boring (they try to score humor points with a serious narration and style and only make it dull) and the computer stuff lacked any exciment because Shirase could type anyone to dead with his left pinky. It's funny how fast I can forget about these stories. It's only some two weeks since I watched and already I don't remember much of them. The formula was: there's a problem only Shirase can solve and this problem is somehow involved with his life. Only he doesn't know that at first. Repeat five times. That works sometimes but it requires some good ideas around which you can build the series. Shirase has no ideas of merit.

I couldn't care less about the characters. They were empty, unfunny and whatever happened to them meant nothing to me. Hmm, actually there was this adult woman doing some fanservice in the last episode. I could have watched more of her. Much better than a 12-year-old. The character desing themselves were okay, they just didn't have any appealing characters. Otherwise the animation falls into norm. Music was like the series: boring. I got tired of the opening and ending songs after two hearings and skipped over them.

Now that my public self has bashed the series, I can let the guy who lives inside me and who I don't let out much, say this: BPS had a weird way of making me amused even though I was bored as hell.

I usually write long reviews with great detailm but I'm going to keep this review short, and to the point. This anime has no real point, thus there is no real point in watching at all. There practically is no storyline nor are there any interesting characters. Well there could've been interesting characters, but this anime only have very one dimensional and lame ones. The whole anime is about this one guy hacking over and over again while falling into a pedofile action, which at first I found mildly amusing, but eventually boring sick and repetiitive. If this anime was 2 episode or so longer I would've really hated this anime even more because they used the same joke over and over. short comedies like Azumanga Daioh, though without any real form, is funny, and smart. But anime like this is really dumb and repetitive. All the hacking crap is implausible as well as dumb. To add to this animation and music is painfully mediocre. This anime, even for what it is meant to be, is not that great.

Summary: this anime never even start. It just show some random events with lame characters with comedy that doesn't really work. Not worth my time and yours. But if you are desperate for some time killer watch it and be disappointed. Only good thing about this anime was that it was short.

Oh man, I haven't had this much fun watching anime in a while. BPS is so delightfully stupid that no matter what kind of mood you're in, BPS will put a smile on your face with it's crazy, but not TOO crazy, antics. Sure, it's unabashadly lolicon, but anyone with a sense of humor can handle it. This aired with Bottle Faires, and if I was in Japan and had the chance to watch those two shows back to back, I would be a very happy person.

After slogging through 11 episodes of Battle Programmer Shirase, I have finally concluded that I am an avid fan of causing myself pain. That's what watching BPS amounts to: anyone who hates themself would have a ball watching this dreck. This series is an overworked and inferior one that tries to do a lot of things but doesn't do them correctly at all. What we have here is a short little anime that is comprised of three equal parts sci-fi jargon, humor and computer hacking 'action'...and fails miserably at all three parts.

Of these shortcomings, the comic relief is the most glaring. Shirase has the single flattest, most boring running gag of all time: the 'Akira in compromising position with generic loli girl' joke. That one guy bursts in and always sees the two doing something funny-looking, then immediately launches into a minute long spiel about bla bla bla this guy is evil but we need him aaah my family will disown me why the hell do I exist. I frowned through the entire joke, and then started skipping it as time rolled on. Other attempts at making me crack a smile fell flat on their ass, especially considering how cliche they were. Pedophile lead? Check. Teacher without inhibitions? Check. Recurring punch-line man for loli gag? Yeah, he's here. *sigh*

When the anime tries to take it seriously, it actually tries to take itself seriously...and that doesn't work one bit. Not only is the action horribly boring -- seriously, who the hell wants to watch someone hack a computer? -- but quite simply I couldn't be brought to care about anyone or anything relevant to what was going on. Basically, Battle Programmer Shirase suffers the same situation as Kyou Kara Maou; you're too busy being inundated in the cheesy comic relief to give a crap about when something dramatic actually happens. Unlike Kyou Kara Maou, however, BPS actually wants the viewer to be interested in the plots that it's writing, but the fact that they suck doesn't really facilitate anything. Seriously, as soon as Akira learned that he would be facing the 'Hyper Aphrodisiac Machine' in episode 11, I told myself "No more of this!" and triumphantly destroyed the series.

I only downloaded Battle Programmer Shirase because it was one of the free HTTP downloads on a certain site I frequent and I figured it would be a nice quick watch to burn some time. Well, it was quick, I'll give it that...but about as far away from nice as conceivably possible. Avoid it, unless you would like to join me in my apparent passion for masochism.

I found this totally boring and not to my taste. It contains silly humor that maybe only some person with a weird computer obsession would like.

The main programmer guy has a semi-interesting character and it kind of has an interesting plot background but the humor just is too weird.

The animation was quite bad and on the sounds weren't taht good either, neither the opening nor the ending songs never struck me as being anything above average. Story is made of several short stories and there are a couple of sub-plots that extend thoughout the series, but never really dominate it. Characters were nice but nothing really special, can't really go wrong with the bored and lazy -type of anti-hero as the main character. There was also some weird sexual references, but you can't really (hopefully) take them for anything else but humor.

This is a quirky show. It has little ten minute mini episodes. The show revolves around Shirase, a computer hacker/nerd/pedophile. The way the his character is carried out is what make the show so cool.

On second watch: Not nearly as cool as I thought.

I liked this series, but probably only because I started my collage career as a computer science major. If this show doesn't appeal to you based on the title, I would suggest that you stay far away from it, because basically the show has three parts: problem, pedeophileia, and programming. So I guess if you love problems or pedophileia, your good to go too. However, that may be an overstatement, because this show would probably get a pg-13 if it was rated. It's middle section can best be discribed as "sexual situations involving minors". The handfull of main charactors are fun, for the most part, but the extras are flat, the story repetitive, and the jokes rehashed. Never the less, when the series was finished I wished there was more. It's fun to see Shirase pull off utterly unrealistic programming techniques, work for bits of computer garbage, and hit on his little cousin. I also like the sad and desperate crew of villans assembled for this show. If the subject matter appeals to you, it's worth giving this series a shot. If you don't feel that an anime about programming will appeal to you, this isn't gonna change your mind.

Fun while it last.

Got a programmer with good skill that can hack from any place any where in the world? Then there's a cute little sister you got a crush on? Or maybe you add somemore spices characters in the story like: Stupid hacker trying to some Military denfend. A teacher who havn't a feeling for the programmer back in high school. Genius child who have the ability almost as good as our SUPER programer. Mixing all this then you'll get "Battle Programmer SHIRASE" The animation didn't go no where, since there not to draws. The sound on the other hand is really fits the setting and story. The story is good at first then it got boring as they keep repeated the same jokes over and over. Not to mention a predictable jokes they showed. Romance is definately a backbone of this story. Really enjoy this wonderful series while it last. Seem to be too shorth, I hopes they'll do a second for this.

Cute, fun, meh... short series are so hard to write about :\

BPS is a fun, comical take on a rouge programmer and his (mis)adventures doing various jobs in exchange for rare computer parts and A\V equipment. The short episodes work well for the story, everything is brightly animated, and the voice acting is goof all around. There's a lot of comedy to be had, albeit a little pedo as Shirase ends up in some kind of kinky sexual position with his niece or her friend from school when his employers break down his door. It's all in good fun though :D

BPS is silly, but it's pretty darn good for a series with 10minute episodes.

I should preface with a disclaimer that this anime isn't for everyone. It has too much middle school sexual innuendo, clinging panty shots, repetitive jokes, and yes, the episodes(or 'Parts') are short.

Yet I give it a thumbs up.

The story is amusing, the plot setups are good, and the characters, although a bit shallow, are entertaining. Most visual and plot gags work well and believe it or not, most of the "technical" jargon is dead on. You don't have to be a programmer or a CS major to enjoy this anime, but having technical proficiency *will* enhance your appreciation. Someone on the BPS obviously is a geek.

I can't wait until second season's episodes are available. The ending of Episode 5 appeared to show an older Shirase with grown up Misao and Yon... and looking rather depressed / down / in the dumps. Maybe it's a sign of things to come.

Okay, this is one anime where it actually doesn't hedge it's message and just plain tells it to you. Here it is: BE A PEDOPHILE!! Every episode has Shirase put in some compromising situation with one of the two elementary school girls with that weird guy walking in. That joke is kinda stupid. And having Yoriko hit on him like that is just wrong! Not to mention the relationship the show's trying to develop between Shirase and Misao (they're related damn it!). The animation's pretty good. The girls' heads are huge and they're pretty cute compared to Shirase's drunken pedo look (which is also well done but makes things worse). The voices are good and the OP's quite good. Story's random and stupid. The characters are pretty interesting. Overall it's a short 5 (or 15 depending on how you count) episode show that isn't all that bad to waste some time on if you've got nothing else to do. Worth a smile, and then a disturbed look here and there.

Great show for programmers to enjoy all around. I like the fact it's hand drawn but it's a little crude for the industry. Would've been nicer with a litte more budget, so eps aren't split and the show wouldn't be cut. It's an okay show overall. Worth watching once, mind the lolicon, and maybe later for Shirase's uber hacking skills, but not necessarily addictive or groundbreaking, altho lots of inside humour exists -- maybe japanese viewers would understand them best.

This could be better in a lot of ways.

Instead of cutting the episodes up into 3 parts, it should have been left to the full 30 minutes. Because of this there is probably a good 8 minutes of actual show. Mainly due to the fact that there is the intro/outro and recap to most episodes.

The idea behind it is good, all the perversion crap should be left out. The series could definitely benefit from this. I wouldnt mind him going after people older, but hitting up middle schoolers is just wrong, and that ruins the series for me.

Overall it is a pretty decent anime. If you like computers you may enjoy this, despite the ecchi crap that follows some episodes.

A worth while series.
the opening and closeing songs are catchy. The story and setup are rather original. the characters are great, BPS (except for some of his inclinations) is kind of my hero, me being some of a computer nerd and all. And I have a special place in my heart for Motoki Sae-sensei ^_^.
the child porn missunderstanding humor goes over the top, and the series doesnt really need it. thats what brings a perfecly good series down a bit. the "30 minute episodes" being cut up in 10 min parts is kind of anoying to, but there is probably a reason for that. Ann enjoyable series, be sure not to miss it! And I hope it will get a secound season as there is much to explore in the BPS universe.

The episodea themselves are actually reasonably good. You are just dropped into the story line and have to figure out who or what is happeneing yourself instead of having everything handed to you by some narator or storyboard.

But there are downsides to this series as well.

If anyone has ever seen "Bambie meets Godzila" then they know exactly what I mean. A disproportionate amount of time is spent on credits and recaps of the previous episode and each ends with what almost amounts to giving away the next whole episode.

The not so well thought out sight gags with sexual inuendos being strong. There is also the "employer of the episode" sequence that gets stale fast - it may just be something that is to local in the way of humor - as in refecting something as seen on a local station of some sort that we Anglo viewers find quite bizzar.

Despite each episode being about 8 minutes long after the removal of the OP and ED, this is actually an enjoyable show. They really need to do something about the constant re-capping of the show at every episode. This goes on for about 6 episodes. Why?!?

BPS is one of the laziest bums I've ever seen, but one of the smartest. =) Even if it is non-fiction. There is absolutely NO character introduction or buildup. You just have to pick it up from where it starts, which is fine. The "jobs" and "payments" BPS goes for are hilarious. Makes you wonder about his priorities.

For the first 3 episodes, the show keeps showing the same clips during the narriative of BPS crawling over a girl that was laying on the floor. That was not necessary. Also, right before BPS gets a job is always boring, when the "employer" does their day dreaming, which wastes a good 2 minutes of 3 episodes total up to episode 6. Why?!?

The animation is great, I'm getting tired of bouncy breasts all over the place. The sound is also good.

I liked the OP and ED animations and songs but they do not match the show in any ways. BTW, the fansub I've seen don't sub the OP and ED but from what I can understand, both the OP and ED is a freakin love song!
