| Cromartie High School may as well be one of the trippiest and underrated school life comedies out there. Like all comedies, the jokes in this one may take a little to get comfortable with, or they may not suit your tastes at all. But once the mindset locks you on, CHS delivers pun-level jokes that are surprisingly and genuinely funny even in this age.
CHS's characters are a bunch of delinquents and oddballs except for Kamiyama, the resident transfer student and main character. Nearly the entire anime gives you a taste of what "funnyman-straightman" jokes are like in Japan, except with Gorillas, Freddie Mercuries, and Mechazawas. The above three really make the school interesting and there should have been more episodes that dealt with them. That said, only a few (1-2) characters could get annoying because of their overused traits for jokes and situations, but at least they give their respective fans what they want.
The episode settings ("story", if you will) are mostly typical of Japanese comedies of all types, yet the twist creates some refreshing 11 minutes filled with smirking situations and bone-breaking puns. There is also a "random" factor, which creates some nice unpredictability that many other comedies (namely romance-comedies) suffer so much from (yet we laugh at the same things over and over again... so sad, eh?).
The animation is very simple - drawn well but mostly static. Don't expect a visual feast, as it does its job and you can pretend the whole thing is a radio talk show. The OP and ED are excellent tripping songs, with the ED oddly reminiscent of the resident Freddie (although Queen is nothing like it). The cast is great in both Japanese and English, with spotlight going to Norio Wakamoto for the charming Mechazawa.
Overall, I do recommend CHS if you like underground/cult anime. Episodes are still funny/trippy the second time around so the series is highly rewatchable. Go buy the DVD and look into the movie!

| This anime is a masterpiece. It shows school-life as never before, filled with deliquent badasses. All characters have deep personalities and all of 'em are so radical that they are simply hilarious. Voiceacters are awesome and among them there's my personal favorite Wakamoto Norio as Mechazawa (unbelievable performance as Onsokumaru in 2x2 Shinobuden). Art of this anime is unique, those thick drawing lines really fits the setting.
While rarely making you really laugh, the jokes that hide deep inside this masterpiece will make you drop from your seat when you get flashbacks of this anime..
(there ain't no real "story", but this anime needs none) ^^

| Cromartie High is one of the weirdest productions of anime/manga that I've ever encountered. Full of jokes that seem so oddly Japanese, it took me quite a long time to get accustomed to the general pacing and gags. There were often many times when I just wanted to stop because it was neither "rofl" funny nor backed by an interesting story. But nevertheless, after a few episodes and some persistence, the characters seemed to grow on me. Furthermore, some of the great funny parts were really enjoyable. One thing is for sure, this anime requires a lot of concentration. Everything is contained in the dialogue. So if you aren't watching it closely, you aren't watching it at all.
Anyway, there's little to be said about reviewing this anime. Either you watch the first few episodes and see if you like it or you don't watch it at all. No review will adequately convey what this anime is like because it is so... different. Each episode is 11 minutes long with some sort of 'theme'. Then, the characters are basically let loose to do and say various odd and different things.
Each character has a pretty consistent personality. While this isn't a character driven anime, you learn to feel a bit more... "comfortable" with some of these odd characters. My personal favorite is the Gorilla and Mechazawa, but the others are pretty interesting to watch as well.
There will definitely be a lot of hits and misses in this series. Especially if you aren't familiar (like me) with exactly what this anime is talking about. I don't really understand whatever Japanese aspect of life these gag jokes make fun of, but sometimes it was worth watching. One thing I do know for sure: The words, "Cromartie High School" will never come out of my mouth.

| Sakigake!! Cromartie High is an anime that is random and funny at the same time. I mean there are 26 episodes that are all different than one another which is not very common. This is one of the most original anime that I have seen in quite some time. I mean it has its own type of comedy with characters' that have an IQ of well a low one accept for a almost normal one which he gets a little catch of the dumbass virus. You may think this anime is stupid, than again you may think it's great, well probably not.
Animation - The animation is actually very good considering what kind of of anime it is. The characters' are drawn to lok like like badass tough guys and brutes. Though many people may not be drawn into this kind of look which looks very real and fits the type of people they are. This anime has great detail everywere weather its the face or their hands. The shading is wonderful, they use a lot of that. The colors are are so good and vibrant weather they are light or dark.
Sound - The opening theme is really catchy and its not p[op music for once. Both of the ending themes are cool and are japanese Hard rock. The voice cast in both japanese language and in english language are succesful. They both fit the dumbass delinquent sort of voice in a good way. Also there is this background tune that plays whenever the characters are thinking, doing, or talking stupid which is very frequently.
Story - The story is kind of episodic since they are doing something different in every episode which is cool because if you don't like that episode it won't be long because they are only 10 minutes each, or you can skip them. They are all quite outrageous and funny.
Characters - The characters' are just too funny. They are all stupid IQ wise, but they're all stupid in their own liitle way. Oh and did I mention that Freddy Mercury(dead singer from Queen) is a character in the show. There is only one slightly normal guy in this whole anime, which he kind of catches the dumbass disease. Also there is Mechazawa a robot who people don't seem to notice that hes a robot accept for a few, I mean its very obvious. Theres also a gorrila that is in the school.
Value - The rewatch value is high. I own this series in a thin-pack on DDvd. The dvd subtitles when watching it in japanese will be different sometimes like when they say Happy Birth day motheF***** it will say happy birthday man. It just seams hat ADV wasa just sensoring subtitles, but if you watch fansubs you'll know what they are saying because it doesnt bleep out the word just subs. There is alot of language if you can understand some japanese.

| "What the HELL is this Thing?"... I thought after I finished it. I took about couple days to let it sinkit and gave another look at it and I though "What the Hell was that?" This anime is total nonsense. But then again the makers know that this is total nonsense; afterall it is clear that anime is meant to not make any sense. This anime is no storyline, and no real characters with depth. It is contant punch line jokes one after another with hideous high school delinquents along with some non-human ones as well.
But for what it is this anime does work to a certain extent. I mean some of the scenes are absolutely hillarious. But some of them are incredibly lame. This anime just intends to throw dumb jokes at you from the beginning to the end. Some of them I enjoyed, some of them I did not.
Clearly this anime is not concerned with any forms of any kind. Quite bazaar and exotic in some sense in their use of ridiculous characters. For example there are gorillas and robots in high school. Pro wrestler rock star? I mean there's enough eccentricity here to keep you entertained and that seems to be the main concern
For me I found this anime to be mildly entertaining. Some of the jokes were repetitive, and too lame for my taste. I think I've seen funnier delinquents in GTO for example. Certainly if you are all up for very weird and flat out stupid jokes (I don't mean that in a bad way... Let's say it like dumb and dumber comedy versus ferris Bueller's day off) you can certainly enjoy this one. If you like witty comedy like me, this will feel a bit too crude.
Oh by the way this anime is mighty short so even if you don't enjoy type of anime you can give it a try and don't feel so bad about it.

| There's one example of my reactions to Cromartie High that describes the series well. One of the characters notices that he's turned into an animal. Just like that. Normal day occurence for the Cromartie bunch, I thought. Then it was revealed that it was just a dream. "WTF! It was just a dream! What is this?!" Those were some of my reactions. One of the things Cromartie does well is reversing your expectations of normality.
The other thing Cromartie does well is the characters. I don't know what kind of a mind can think of such individuals. I think to last nail to coffin was Freddie. Hey, a gorilla, sure it can go to a school. A robot, why not. But Freddie. Oh dear god... Despite this trio, part of me thinks that the regular humans of the series are even weirder. People who aren't able to introduce themselves, future rulers, polite guy who becomes the leader of them all, guy who's hair dances more than a supersaiyan's etc. There's a lot humor in them and especially their interactions. It's absolutely hilarious to see different reactions to the non-human elements of the cast or the way Kamiyama teaches the rest civil behaviour.
The stories are individual divided into two groups. Part of them handles normal school activities, fighting with other schools or field trips. Other are off this world like baseball training in the deep forest, comedy shows or a gorilla in a sushi bar. What's remarkable is that there isn't that big a difference between them: both of them seem as funny and weird as the other. There's no big story or plot behind the series: just a random collection of jokes.
Animation is at par with the content: weird. It must have been convient for the production that such a static, non-impressive style fits the series so well. But there's also a lot of visual jokes so it isn't boring to watch it. The sound is rockish, suitable for such a delinquent series. The first ending song was the only one that really got to my nerves and I was always jumping over it (I very rarely do that). Voice acting is first-class, I wonder how they have stayed serious through the insanity. You can really feel that the characters are tough from their language.
One thing about Cromartie worth mentioning is that it's best served with company. I watched it first through alone and thought it wasn't that funny. Some parts were boring too. But as my anime club started showing it too, I noticed I laughed in every turn with others. Cromartie might occasionally tire you with its non-logical weirdness but in the end it's quite a fun show to watch in small doses and with good company.

| A very experimental comedy. A bunch of lame badasses, a gorilla, a talking robot and a foreigner who doesn't say anything, make up the motely crew for the Cromartie High School. This series is absolutely hilarious. It's definitely something to watch on a day off with a couple of buddies for some real good laughs. Definitely an anime which only guys would understand most of the jokes.
The animation needs a lot to be desired, the OP and ED songs were good. The story is nonexistant but the characters steal the show. Good watch!

| Cromartie High… really hard to review this one… it is stupid, pointless, the jokes are lame and yet for some reason I just couldn’t keep watching it, and now that stupid song from episode 3 is stuck in my head along with Freddy’s image… I guess there aren’t to many animes wierder than this one.
Animation:
This probably was one of the easiest animations to make… yeah the character design is kinda funny since we all like the bully face, but beyond that point, when it comes to background design, movement, originality and cg effects and detail this has to be one of the worst animations ever… So let me develop that a bit… the backgrounds are the same simple ones that are reused over and over again, the cg effects don’t blend in at all, and for minutes at a time the only thing that moves is a characters mouth… overall this is pretty cheap even for an exaggerated parody anime like this one, wich is shocking considering that this anime is made by Production IG.
Sound:
Probably the most accomplished part of this anime… yes the voice acting is funny, even dough the lines are rushed and unrealistic, but it’s a parody so it works well… as my favorite voices I would like to nominate Mechazawa and Hokuto… the bg music was on the same level with the mood the story generates, and as a very positive remark I really liked the Op/Ed themes…
Story:
I don’t even know where to start it, cose I honestly don’t even know if it has one, it’s all made out of episodic comedy/parody stories similar to Excel Saga that focus on the same group of highschool delinquends that just do and think the absurd and inimaginable, and then after 23 episodes it abruptly ends without any real conclusion, it’s like the story was cut in half as it doesn’t seem to have anything close to an ending, or maybe episode 23 isn’t the ending, but there aren’t any episodes after that so this must be it… ahh I’m even more confused now… There are a few things I’ve noticed, exept for the total lack of logic… there isn’t even one female character in this anime wich is an absolute first for almost any anime, well there is one female, the blonde guy’s mother but she looks more like a scarry male convict/delinquent then a girl… another thing I’ve notied is that for an anime that makes fun of the delinquent life this anime has very very little real fighting… and then half of the time of the anime is spent in the classroom, but not one second of actuall school work, they don’t even show a teacher…
Characters:
All the characters are superficial and absurd, and yet I’ve found them to be very enjoyable and memorable… Freddy’s image is stuck in my head (he looks just like Freddy Mercurry from Queen, the big music star from the 80’s) even dough he never actually said a single word… Mechazawa had quite some funny moments and the best voice of the anime… Kamyama the main hero had the funniest and wierdest ideas and concepts and it explained them in a very serious manner wich made it even funnier… Hayashida’s purple hair was alive and fun… Then there was the King of Bullies who had a sever case of car sickness, and The other highschool delinquent leader who was a comedy fanatic… Hotuko the dictator… the guy without a name.. the blonde guy that gets kidnapped all the time.. and the Gorilla…. Think about the possibilities of the interractions between these guys.
Value and entertainement:
Woww what can I say, there were so many boring moments and lame jokes, but the few good jokes made me laugh till I was out of air and for some reason, even dough I kept telling myself that this is the stupidest thing I’ve ever saw I just couldn’t take my eyes of this anime…. Strange, really strange.

| Such an excellent series; as a graphic designer, I can't talk enough about this series. It's so aware of every placement and every movement of the characters on screen. On the cover, it seems like some raunchy humour and something for dumb jock manga readers. But.....NO. Just pay attention to appreciate this. Watch everything the artist does; pay attention like you would do a where's waldo book. There is so much humour and randomness and psychological humour packed into this that every moment can be absorbed and enjoyed. The rough story seems similar to say GTO or gokusen - new guy to a group of delinquents. That is the end of the similarity; this anime is eye humour. Like excel saga, it parodies anime but unlike excel saga, it does this in completely different manner. You just have to see.

| Cromartie High is another show that doesn't take itself very seriously, so it's hard to grade. It's rather inconsistent as well. Sometimes it's so funny you want to rewind it over and over again. Sometimes it spends so much time grasping at straws that it loses you altogether. In those moments you can be thankful that each episode is only 10 minutes long.
Kamiyama is a well disciplined student who finds himself attending a high school known for its delinquent student body. However, nobody questions whether or not he is tough, so he is accepted by the crowd. The story is about the misfits he encounters, and the ridiculous circumstances they must face on a daily basis.
The cast is really comprehensive. Most of its members are delinquents, but some characters really stand apart from the crowd. Freddy is a 40 year old foreigner (American?) who speaks no Japanese, Mechazawa is a robot, and there's even a gorilla who shows up to class on a daily basis. Come to think of it, while most of the show takes place in the school, not a single moment is spent during class time. That's because the show relies on a lot of dialogue between the characters. While much of the series attempts to portray the delinquent stereotype, there are times when it strays from it into a laughable perspective, usually accomplished by the casts tendency to take themselves way to seriously.
I don't know if I would consider it highly recommended, but altogether it comes to less than four hours of your lifetime, and you could be wasting that in worse ways than watching this.

| Cro-High looks terrible. It has strange music. It has absolutely obscure references to stuff nobody has ever heard of.
And it's one of the funniest damn anime series I've ever seen.
The characters are a riot, the humor is deliciously wry, and the sight gags have to be seen to be believed.

| Ah, another one of those anime with lots of humor but no plot. Unlike some anime, this series pulls it off nicely. The episodes are short, but the humor is so good that you won't be able to take much more than 15 minutes without dying of laughter. Watch the very first episode and you'll see what I mean.

Was war passiert?

| I started watching this by accident and I was slow to get into it. I just didn't get the joke. But then I watched episode 3 and I was hooked! Surely the funniest 12 minutes I've ever watched. A piece of comic genius! After that it was like an addiction.
I know it's 1D. But who cares when it's this funny?! I recomend the manga as well, just as funny.

| What a surprise, I actually liked it. Well, some of the eps anyway. I've seen 6 and I liked 3 of them. Freddy and the gorilla creep me out, I hate them. However Kamiyama, Hayashida and Mechazawa own the series, so there's always something to keep me amused. It's a hit-and-miss title so you definitely need to check it out for yourself.
EDIT: Now I've seen 13 and I only liked 4...What percentage is that? -_-;;

| This is a fine example of a brillant hit or miss anime. It will either have you by the balls just after the opening, or you'll be left wondering what the hype is all about. There is one point and one point alone to this anime, to make fun of anime.
Now, something one should know... The quality of one's experiance watching this anime depends solely upon which fansub you get. It is the humble opinion of this reviewer that you seek the ANBU fansubs, and ignore the A-M.

| Up to episode 10. Quite amusing. This one kept me entertained the whole way through. Man that pencil bit had me laughing till my ribs hurt. There's one or two slow episodes, but that still doesn't tarnish this hilariously enjoyable anime. The anime might be pointless, but who cares?! I don't!

| Cromartie is easily the most pointless anime that one can find. For me, it even topped the pointlessness of FLCL.
This anime seems to have only one goal -> To make you laugh. If you like dry, lame, weak humour such as in FMP? Fumoffu, but then completely pointless (yes, that IS possible, SCH proves that!), then this is your anime. The episodes are short, the animation fits the rediculousness perfectly and the sound complements the package. The characters are simply hilarious, and you can't really say there is a main character, this id different per episode.
All you have to do is just sit back, watch and laugh. That's all this anime can do and it's damn good at that. Must watch for those who like to laugh!

| Great comedy that places this strange phenomenon of the growing violence among youngsters in Japan as main theme. From the animes I've seen, only GTO openly approached this subject like this. Other animes like Tenshi na Konamaiki, Hajime no Ippo, and Yu Yu Hakusho make it an essential part of the plot, but not it's central theme.
Cromartie reminds people of Sexy Commando because they both look for the bizarre inside the high school scenario. Both also feature an unique cast of characters never assembled before. Besides the themes, the main difference between both is the way the protagonist views the strangeness of their world. While Fu-min slowly enters Masaru's weird world, Kamiyama rapidly becomes part of the illogical.
It should be pretty interesting to know what gang members think of this anime.
