I really enjoyed this one. I am an Art Grad. And have studied a lot into the actually story of Gilgamesh so this one I found very pleasing. It was really twisted at some points and the ending was totally cool. The ending took me completely off guard. All in all, the graphics were pretty, and the story was not to shabby. I put this one up there on my list.

(Bakuretsu anime fansubs. Very good effort fansubbing a very mediocre anime. Good compression using DIVX and XVID on some episodes that were only 100 MB. That tells a lot about the animation quality of the show, though the visuals were decent.)

Some series are underrated because they lack the commercial qualities that most of today's "masterpieces" have, while others are underrated simply because they are shit and no one bothers to watch or promote them.

So searching for such kind of series or movies there is the risk that it can belong to the second category.

I expected Gilgamesh to be a different and more to my liking. One thing that put me off and without it I really would have liked this title much more, were the children and the Gilgamesh with supernatural abilities.

Havent I suffered enough years ago by being forced to watch Dragonball and Power Rangers since then there was nothing better on TV?

That kind of battles, pretty popular among the majority of the younger generation especially is not for me. If you like battles then you should watch this anime. Maybe if the battles were as in Texhnolyze it would be better but judging from the characters one can guess the age rating of this anime.

So till episode 20 there is the 1000 times repeated topic of teenagers fighting other teenagers with various supernatural gadgets, clicheed characters, an unattractive story and most importantly a unique yet non-fitting ending.

In the last 6 episodes the producers finally decided that the battles are enough and then start to develop the story in more detail. But till then I had lost interest and waited for the series to end. The ending is pessimistic but that doesnt change the anime from being mediocre.

Considering the visuals they had an appeal if you like dark anime, though they could have used that visual style more effectively. Because the animation lacks a lot. I know anime series arent famous for the many frame rates but for a 2003 series this is inexcusable.

As for the music I dont really remember much but I think this was the best part of the show. I'm no music expert after all so I skip this.

Problem is I've watched relatively many titles and became eclectic. That is both good and bad. Good because now I know what titles to watch. Bad because I've lost touch with the current and popular anime titles.

As others said, if you havent watched "Texhnolyze" do it, instead of watching this. Not that "Texhnolyze'' hasnt its flaws but it is much better than this.

I regret too that I thought the anime "Noein" was mediocre. In comparison to this "Noein" is a masterpiece and you should watch this too.

The animation is terrible. A lot of the movements are way off and I hope they had a small budget to justify it being so bad. However, the design is awesome. If you like your anime dark and mysterious, check this one out.
The sound was awesome from the music to the effects. They all worked together to enhance the feel of the environment and the overall quality of the show.
The story was only ok. It starts slow, but begins to pick up the pace around episode 5. However, the pace never gets too fast because of the show over reliance on limited animation. Also, I think one of the story's major problems is that it is too dark so everything begins to feel normal. There is no real happiness on screen to give the viewer an anchor so they can see how sad these characters have become. Also, the ending really pisses me in how it was executed. For some reason, every character takes their turn to end their stories, instead of a collective climax.
Overall, I really enjoyed the anime because of its mood, design and sound, which help rectify its lower points. Also, the last scene is awesome. Only if it didn't stumble its way to it.

I think Gilgamesh does a good job of exploring human qualities and desires. It's not groundbreaking, and the animation is plaid sometimes, as well as plagued by some inconsistencies in many scenes.

The show veers towards a path of predictability as we see important characters disappear for long stretches. Kiyoko was a shoe in for her eventual fate. The theme ensured that the rest of the cast was in for theirs as well. There was no mention of hope, of a brighter future, just despair and hopelessness.

For all the hints of enormous power residing within Madoka, it was disappointing to see the kid never reach his potential, never reach greatness. In fact, it was his older sister who truely eschewed the notion of Gilgamesh. She was the one person who's path resembled that of Gilgamesh. After the loss of Enkidu (who would be Madoka), Kiyoko's child, who I took it to be herself, was the one that reached immortality. Kiyoko was by far the most enjoyable person in the series, and possibly the most neglected. It seems the animators put the most effort into drawing her as well, as she spanned three generations; being the look-alikes of the mother, herself, and child.

The series is paced well enough. It does get lost here and there, but not much. However, the ending was akin to a 5 minute roller coaster ride. I think that was why I was left collecting my mind after the last frame. The conclusion was shockingly appropriate and like all shocking events, one takes a moment to pause and reflect on what just transpired.

It's a good series to enjoy. Definitely something different. A little slow at first, but picks up nicely by the 4th-5th episode.

Quite an unique anime with a very interesting setting. Also, I think it does a good job at thematizing human desires without being overtly dramatic about them.

About the technical aspects, the animation is comparatively bad, but the still images and backgrounds are quite good, and the sound is okay too.

But story-wise, I believe a bit too few elements were taken from old mythology; or maybe the meaning behind them was too difficult to recognize. For instance, I can only perceive the motive of Ishtar -which isn't mentioned at all throughout the animé-. Gilgamesh and Enkidou don't really seem to be present, nor most of the other deities which old mythology needed to empathize different aspects of human beings -or make a good story, for that matter.
I think that many viewers will not care so much about the real mesopotamian myth or a variety in deities, but even so I feel that omitting all the "counter-weight"-deities from the original mythologies is precisely what makes this series feel overtly one-sided (dark, melancholic), to a degree where it's quite annoying.

Note that there sure are many interesting, elaborate characters throughout the series that stand out positively and might have been used to enhance the story by a lot, but as they were used, they barely are significant in any way, if at all.
Were these other chrarcters only meant to shock viewers emotionally?

Verdict: Interesting and sure something an enthusiast anime viewer would want to watch, but also quite much of a "tunnel vision" series.

This anime dwells on strangeness for the sake of being strange. From the beginning to the end this anime is out to confuse you till you are bored out of your mind. At the end I felt like " What the hell did I just watch?" Last 5 episodes or so which builds up quite a bit of drama and mystery is completely obliterated by nonsense ending... Gosh this anime really was not worth it.

I like mystery and sci-fi dramas. I mean Evangelion was strange, Rahxephon was pretty strange too. and there are many other animes that are STRANGE, but manages itself to have a point throughout the anime. I just oculdn't find anything of that sort here. The boundary between good and bad is very thin if not none. This is not a bad thing as long as if the viewers can draw some type of conclusion from it, but at the end I'm left with nothing.

The anime is dreadfully slowly throughout. Pacing is absolutely the worst as nothing realy happens duuring the beginning through the middle. Someof the key elements could've been shortened much more to have the mystery more engaging. Story is confusing and till the end it doesn't not reveal everything. And at the end it just makes everything even more vague.

But what could've saved this anime were characters... too bad it didn't. There are definetely some could've been interesting elements in all of the characters, but they never really spend time on them at all. most of the anime is spend on silent moments with bird flying or water dropping. It tries to makes itself look artsy, but all it does is wasting time.

Animation I think everyone would agree is different. But I do not dislike the style. It kindda looks like American comic book-ish style that captures the mood of this anime to an extent. What's really bad is its action scenes. Ok there are some shinning ball flying around and characters seem to get injured. there is no sense of immediacy in the action and the moments of the characters. Everything about their motions are lame. Too worsen the action scene characters just stand around until they get hit and act injured. If a huge ball of light or some kind of attack is coming at you at least act like you are dodging. And add ow frame rate to this you got one of the worst action scenes you've seen in your life. The action scenes are an extreme opposite of stupendous and idiotic Dragonball Z like action.

Music is quite throughout. Sometimes music really does accentuate the mood of the scenes and works well... but what's the point of good music when the whole serious is so bad?

Well I don't recomment watching this anime. I think there are better apocalytic animes of this sorts. X or scrapped princess would even be recommended over this one and I don't even like the other two all that much. Avoid this. But if you are bored out of your mind and have to watch something confusing this could be a mediocre time killer.

this anime is quite unique....

the story is quite twisted but very interesting(omoshiroi), dark ambience yet you can get hooked w/ it right away, the first time i watched it i got a little bored but as the episodes progressed i was really wanting more of this anime. The ending is not a typical one too, so maybe thats why i liked this anime(dakara kore ga anime daisuki). ja!!

Sure animation is not the best quality of this anime... The character design is awfull and many animations are unreal... Maybe it's the worst anime i've ever seen on this point...
But when i've begun to be interested in the story, i watched all episodes so fast and finally, i really enjoyed it ! The story is really interesting and characters are so mysterious, just as i like... And the end is... i could discuss on this end a long time without really understand what it mean...

So if you like complex stories, watch it, you won't be disapointed !

Gilgamesh gets the rather average marks from me. I really think it had its high points and its low points.

I give credit to the fight scenes, and I give credit to the fact that they got better as the series progressed. But the plot itself sometimes crawled along. It was a good plot overall, it danced around actually getting to the point all too often. Also, I HATED the ending. This is one of those series I may have been more content to watch up to half way through the last episode and quit. It just... wasn't original in the slightest.

Despite all this, I LOVED the animation. It keep a unique, dark, enjoyable feel to the whole thing.

This is, overall, an astounding average anime. The beginning is weak, with a muddled, storyline, boring characters, and utterly awful animation. It should be noted though that I found the character designs refreshingly different.

Around the middle of the series, the plot begins to take shape, the animation gets a lot better, and overall it becomes fairly interesting.

However, again, the end is weak. The plot fails to come together cohesively, leaving the viewer almost at a loss to figure out what is actually going on.

All told, it's an average show. Not great, not bad.

It happened to me again!!! Just when a series is going along brilliantly it's killed by an awful ending. 9 times out of 10 no matter how great the series is the ending is completely horrid. With Gilgamesh it's more so then ever, probably because the first 25 episodes of the series I absolutely loved!

The story is brilliant for 25.5 episodes. The last 10 minutes of the last episode are the most dissappointing ever. It was as if the writers thought on what ending would aggravate and alienate the most diehard fans of the series and decided to add that as the ending!!! I'm very serious about this, I'm not just ranting. In the last 10 minutes characters act out of character from the first 25 episodes and things are quickly thrown together as if they knew there was 10 minutes left and had to come up with some ending, so who cares if it goes against what was established throughout the series.

Here's my recommendation: watch the first 25 episdoes, watch up to the last 10 minutes of episode 26 and then shut off the show. Go sit somewhere and write up your own ending. I gurantee that the ending that even the most talentless, unimgainative writer can come up with is better than the one here.

Anyways...the animation is different but I liked it. The characters are amazing! You can't help hating them one minute and loving them the next, signs of really good writing (which goes completely against the ending). The Countess Werdenberg is so evil at times but at others you feel sorry for her. Really good work.

The music and sound is the best I've ever heard. The ending theme, Wasuremono no Mori, is my favorite in all of anime. The music and sounds that go along with the scenes are dead on perfect. Every sound fits perfectly with the mood.

In summary Gilgamesh is a blend of the best and worst anime has to offer.

Man talk about wasted. I originally fought that this anime will be pretty good with how they started this story even through the artwork was somewhat different. But after I finish watching this whole series, the ending and the building towards the end wasn't very good even if it did had a very protental beginning story plot. It very much turned into another rip off version of eva like ending in a way. (Even through the ending is a bit twisted.)

This anime had protental but the ending defects the story, although I was thinking its pobably leading towards that. Can't really recommand this title to everyone due to the animation and the whole twisted story build up, but if you like titles like Lain, Eva, Rahxephon, & Saikano you'll pobably like or at least okay with this one.

This anime is unbelievable. The way it flows, and backs up without missing a beat so that it still goes forward without going backwards. Sorry, that couldn''t have made any sense. The ending is the biggest shock in this entire series, but I loved the ending. Its an ending where just about all questions are answered and nothing is left in the dark about your favorite character's future. Very wicked. The animation takes some getting used to, but after a while, you love it, and you have to ease yourself back into your regular anime drawing style. I couldn't help but grown attached to the characters, one moment I loved them, the next I hated them. But in the end, I loved them all, even the bad ones. If you can sit through a couple of episodes, this is bound to grown on you. Man I still love that ending. I am gonna be talking and thinking about it all week.

This is quite an unusual anime.

The animation is very distinctive, and though sometimes a bit "rough" (especially the CG and most of the fighting), it gets the job done. I didn't like the OP and ED at first, but they grew on me.

I think the main strength of this anime is the writing; it's really quite unusual. The way the story moves backwards and forwards and isn't afraid to dwell on particular characters (and their strange qualities) or get rid of other characters is quite refreshing. The characterisations also are quite deep. However, be warned, the beginning is very slow and if you're not prepared for a character-based story, you'll feel a strong temptation to give up. The ending is quite a surprise, and a bit mysterious, though the meaning seems mostly clear (though still unexplained).

Overall, I recommend this if you're prepared to watch something unusual and at times a bit trying.

I really enjoyed this series and found myself watching episode after episode even though I just wanted to give it a try and watch the rest later. One reason for this are the constant cliffhangers, the other that Gilgamesh is somewhat different from most series out there.

Frankly, I was disappointed. From the style I expected this to be something like Texhnolyze, because the characters weren't flawless and were allowed to look a bit uglier than usually. And since this clearly was darker anime of which fan I normally am, I thought it would be intelligent too. Well, it did try to be clever. Nice try.
Annoyed is what this left me. Well, it did inspire some reaction, but not quite the wanted one, I suppose. This promises much more than it actually gives.
Anime had its good points too of course, I can't deny it. It had dark atmosphere and ok characters. And the story wouldn't be that bad if one wouldn't feel that after the promising start it is an insult to the watcher's intelligence.

The first thing that you'll notice when watching gilgamesh is the "different" animation. While backgrounds, settings and general atmosphere are awesome I really hated the way characters were drawn. However don't let that fool you, this show has an awesome story, a real mindtwister full of biblical references and mysterious events. I rarely give story a 10 rating but this one deserves it!

After finishing the show it left me feeling the way Evangelion and Lain did, amazed but complete and utter confusion.

If you want a deeper anime make sure to watch gilgamesh, don't let the art scare you away, the story is really worth it.

When you first start watching this series, it can be a little hard to get into. Most notably, the animation seems very strange. For example, they have defined lips. They refine their technique by around episode 3 or 4, and by the end of hte series, you've definately grown to like it. Another interestiong thing about the animation is there really are none of the typical anime conventions used. The eyse don't rapidly change, the people don't make sudden movements, there is no giant cartoony sweat drop. They will occationally have a bead of sweat, but it looks very natural.

As for the story, it is definately a thinking man's anime. There are plots within plots, and, just like several of the characters, we are never entirely sure of what exactly is going on. We think one thing is happening, when it turns out something completely different is going on.

The ending is a bit open to interpretation (make sure you watch all the way up through the credits of the last episode) but it's nothing like the ending to Neon Genesis Evangelion. It actually makes sense, and is a definately resolution.

Give this anime a try, but do your best to watch at least five or six episodes. You have to give it a proper chance.

At first, it seemed different. Then around the middle of the series, things began to drag on and on - sometimes with only speech per episode (and you still understood a bit more). Towards the end though, plot info rushes in packed, and the series just 'dies' off at the end. Poor ending.

That sums it up, imho.

Animation: 7/10
- If you like some thing different, and especially if you wish to step away (awhile) from cutie schoolgirls anime. You need sharp recognition skills though.

Sound: 8/10
- This is for sound quality, and voice acting. Good enough to match the atmosphere, and the mix of classical pieces certainly mystifies it more. But no thanks to the highly repeated attack sounds...

Story and Character: 4/10
- Can't say much, since I suppose it tries to capitalise on the "Gilgamesh" name... without the namesake whatsoever. Character development is unbalanced, one moment you it's deep in for this person, then cuts off.

Value: 3/10
- If you're talking about fansub, get it now. Before it gets licensed in your place (but I dub it has high chance, save for the name)

Enjoyment: 6/10
- I like different things once in a while, but the fact that each episode ends too quickly (this does include the last episode) puts me off a bit.
