| Considering Matsumoto Reiji's fame and the success of his other works, I expected more from Submarine Super 99 (SS99). Perhaps it was because he didn't have enough control over the production of this anime, but I found it to be much less lucid than its other counterparts.
The character design is almost always the same for Matsumoto's works (that same hairstyle for guys and girls is everywhere). But what I found most disappointing was the unexplained storyline. I felt that everything was happening so slowly, but they still managed to leave the plot so tangled and distorted.
After watching several episodes of SS99, it is hard to discover what I have actually learnt about the anime. For me, it was nothing. I still knew nothing about the conflict and war situation. They only thing I remembered was the main character's name!
Perhaps I have something about height issues but is the main character a midget or what? Being a military man, I expect him to be an adult but he is definitely short in comparison to everyone else in the series. I find that trait to be quite atypical in most other male leads, so I guess that's something worth noting (whether for good or ill).
The story might have been a good one, but it was definitely too slippery and unexplained to grasp (explaining the low enjoyment score). Otherwise, I have no complaints about the animation, but just like Matsumoto's other works, the music didn't stand out this time either.
