Texhnolyze is a very controversial series within the depths of my own mind. I thought it was boring at first. Then I loved it. Then I was just flat-out confused. I struggled internally, putting off the review for this anime until weeks later. It is notable, in retrospect, that these incidents alone prove that the anime is worthy of some merit.

But let's start off with the objective portions, which are easier to review. The animation is downright excellent. For an anime this many years back, I was thoroughly impressed with its art style. "Images portray a 1000 words". For this series, it was surely the case.

Sound is pretty good, but nothing to write home about. It's really the story and character sections that start getting the controversy-ball rolling...

IMO, this anime has fantastic characters, and a great story. It's so 'tooth and nail', while maintaining a portion of authenticity. Characters will scream/cry, and express sorrow/hope/grief. It's all over the emotion-spectrum, and this I was quite drawn to.

At the same time, however, the series was UGLY. And I don't just mean depressing and dark. I usually actually thoroughly enjoy dark series that launch themselves into a myriad of confusing psychobabble. However, Texhnolyze, in a way, kind of crossed the line for me. It wasn't just depressing and dark. It was gross. The direction in which the series was moving is 'questionable', in that, ultimately, at the end of the anime, you can't help but feel "there was no point in all this". That notion can slowly eat at you afterward, forming an uncomfortable knot in your gut.

And yet I can imagine viewers complaining along the lines of "well, that's what makes the anime amazing! It makes you think!". Well, yes, I enjoy thinking, but not if there's nothing to be found. Kind of like a Beatles song whose true 'meaning' was: "we got high and wrote about monkeys and stuff". For those of you who 'think' you understand this series, I challenge you to message me (and I'll change my review). Because I am THAT SURE that no one knows what the anime is actually trying to say. My opinion is that with this anime, the 'abstractica' goes WAY overboard. I loved Elfen Lied's ending, or even the mysterious puzzle that was Code Geass R2's ending. But this anime just wasn't saying anything concrete at all (trust me, I did my research). It's just too controversial and non-concrete. Almost 'sloppy' I dare say, for an anime of such high quality otherwise.

Still, despite all this, why is the score relatively high overall? Well it's because despite the nasty feelings this anime delivers, I RESPECT IT. There is a great deal of reverence that I feel, for example, towards the characters. From the honorable Ichise, the kind Ran, the leader-like Onishi. All the characters are just so memorable. And for the record, the middle of the anime was downright intense and amazing.

Most people stop watching at the beginning because the anime is 'boring'. In fact, a major complaint I personally have with this anime is it's pacing; many portions could've easily been condensed (ie: this anime could've easily been cut down to 13-14 episodes). Still, for those who say the anime is 'boring', however, I say they don't do it justice. You just got to get past the beginning.

Ichise, our main character, is dropped in a depressing city known as Lux. Throughout the anime, the character slowly develops into a stronger individual as he encounters mysterious persons that sympathize with and help him. The meaning of his courageous struggle? No clue. And I say this with dismay and intended sarcasm, because IF the anime actually said something substantial, it would've made me very happy.

But, Texhnolyze, unfortunately decides to derail itself into a psychosis of confusion (similar to a schizophrenic patient off his meds). YET, simultaneously, the absolutely awesome and memorable characters, and fantastic middle portion of the anime, makes me respect it to the utmost level, while not altogether enjoying it.

Overall, a fantastic work of art with brilliant characters, but misses the mark in aspects such as authenticity in story and direction. While I am disappointed that I can't fall in love with the series completely, I will admit that there is, without a doubt, something 'special' here. Texhnolyze hits on the edge of something so incredibly awesome and so desirably authentic, that it just leaves so much more to be desired. If only they went somewhere with this, because then, it would've been truly amazing.

This anime looks great, no doubt about that, the problem is that its presentation is so disjointed that it becomes almost unwatchable. Several times while watching it I had to check to see if perhaps I'd missed an episode with that crucial piece of information that would make everything come together. Alas it was not so. Honestly the story wouldn't have been that interesting to me even if the direction hadn't made the whole thing a schizophrenic mess.

If you actually can stand it until the story starts, it might be rewarding, if you prefer a story driven series, it might not be your coup of tea. This series is heavily animation driven, so you won't hear much conversations.
I saw the first 5 chapters, i won't be seeing the rest. I have heard some people comparing this series to lain, indeed the series share some elements in common, but the way texhonoliyze develops is just too tedious for me to stand.

"If the only way to be granted life in this world is to surrender my body and soul to insanity then I shall choose to meet my doom!"

It's good that I have been watching anime for years now and I am very familiar with the style of Yoshitoshi ABe. Was I new to anime, I would have went "WTF?!" pretty soon when watching Texhnolyze. Yes, this show's style takes some time getting used to, but when you finally do, it becomes one of the most rewarding experiences in the media world. Remember to always remain open minded when watching this anime and never forget to pay attention to little details. Doze away for a few seconds and you will find yourself not comprehending anything what is going on the screen. Oh yeah, the first episodes are best watched at night, or at least, not at sunny days, as they have lots of dark scenes, which are neccessary to be seen. Thanks to the stupid sunlight I had to re-watch the first episode at night. >_<

If you're into weird surreal stuff (Serial Experiments Lain, Boogiepop Phantom, Haibane Renmei) then this show should be on the top of your "to watch list". Heh, I wish there were more anime like this, such works truly make you feel it worthwhile to be an anime fan. You have never seen anything like this show, I can guarantee that.

One of the few anime series that I have watched where I stopped watching just over halfway because it just didn't grab my interest enough. I really enjoyed Serial Experiments Laine so I had high expectations for this but was very disappointed. The story moves very slowly and is overly complicated. I normally enjoy complicated anime, but in this case the intricacies of who was fighting who over what just weren't interesting.

The animation is OK, but a bit dull, dark and drab at times. The sound is nothing amazing. The characters spend a lot of time silent (e.g. Ichise wondering around for the first 5 episodes just dragging his leg around) so one doesn't really get to know their personalities that well.

I really don't get why this anime is so highly rated but it just didn't do it for me.

Well, Im having a bit of trouble rating this series correctly. I dont want its grim outlook to affect my score. Theres is alot of amazing things about this anime. First, its visual quality is able to draw you into that grim reality, that world called Lukuss. The story is pretty intricate with alot subjects that are open to interpretation and Plenty of symbolism (I wont spoil). Ichise the main character goes through alot of changes throughout the series that makes for some very good character development. I loved the ever-mysterious Ran, the girl who can see the future and wears the mask of a fox.

I really enjoyed this series in terms of how much I really apreciate it. It shows the violent human nature of wanting to destroy each other and everything around us. It also shows how society is controlled by a few people rather than by the mass. More thorough over view in the additional details -->

TEXHNOLYZE is a very compelling piece of work that requires full use of brain power to network all the symbols and philosophies to make sense of the heavily depressing plotline. Not only is the story depressing, but so are the characters and animation style (including the all-too ironic episode titles Heavenward and Hades). You'll feel really depressed, if you sat through all 22 episodes.

This is, without a doubt, the most violent series I've seen. Nothing like the mindless slaughter as seen in Elfen Lied or Berserk, this series is actually painful to watch at times, which isn't a plus if you ask me but earns the series some animation points, which then get substracted for the drabness of it all.
The strength of the series is it's story, which feels like it could've been written by Nietzsche, except maybe that his philosophy wasn't as clearly pessimistic as Texhnolyze's is. The story and the world explores the most essential questions about our existence, the why and the where-to, and the final answer is a lot bleaker than can be explained in words.
Excellent series for when you need a little cheering down on a warm summer's day or when need something to think about.

Texhnolyze is a bit of a weird show to review for me. The first time I watched it I remember being very bored and the plot being very convoluted and hard to follow.

Basically the show is about the advancement of a new technology that allows mechanical prosthetic implants to those who have lost limbs. It takes place in the future of course but it keeps things very realistic in terms of how far we have advanced and the types of advancements we have made.

Now as with any advancements in technology, there are those who can afford it, and those who can't. Also there are those who wish to try and control it and use if for purposes in which the terms "good and evil" are difficult to apply. This is what the show is based heavily around.

There is a lot more to the plot than just who gets to control and use this technology and what do they use it for, especially towards later episodes. The themes are dealt with in a very expressive, original and creative way, and the production values are almost unsurpassed. This is definitely not going to be for everyone, but I would recommend it to those with patience who are fans of cyberpunk and futuristic themed fiction.

Since this is my first review I hope that you will bear with me. I haven’t seen as many Animes as many people here, but since I come from a different background and profession I can bring a different perspective in the reviews I will write on the Animes I see. I will try to be objective, but in my view: There is no such thing as objectivity.

For me Texhnolyze is a series which tried to say something more than the average Anime. The themes of Texhnolyze are; faith, the purpose of life, the meaning of life, heaven and hell etc. It tried to tackle every serious idea, problem… that we face in our lives. Maybe it doesn’t give us definite answers to all the questions that it asks, or to any of them, but I have to respect the courage it took to tackle them, and to tackle them in a way that it does. What I liked in it was that it makes the viewer think. It tries to engage the viewer, and make him find his own answers to these questions.

Texhnolyze, if we disregard all the major questions it deals with is about loyalty, friendship, revenge and the journey we take in finding our purpose in life and finding our place in this world. The main character Ichise is (in a way) on a pilgrimage, on which he is trying to find his purpose. The main question he asks are: “if my actions have any meaning, do they change anything?”; “if I can make a difference?” Or does everything stay the same with or without us… When he loses his limbs he loses his life that was before, and in those first few episodes when he is learning to walk, he is actually learning to live his new life, trying to choose the road he must take, and when he chose it, he didn’t look back, he fully commited to it. He tried to make a difference. I think that Ichise made a difference and found his place; He found his place in the middle of heaven and hell.

If you decide to watch Texhnolyze you won’t be sorry. In a way it’s like a good film or a good song: it’s not something that is easy to watch but if you give it a chance, it will be rewarding. A must watch!

After I watched Serial Experiments Lain and found it one of the most thought-provoking 13 episode animated series I decided to watch Texhnolyze (Boogiepop Phantom and Haibane Renmei are similar in story though they were made by a different production teams) since I'm fascinated so far by the work of the series' producers.

It is obvious that this time they had a greater budget to spend than the other series. 22 episodes, amazing (and more expensive I presume) animation by Madhouse and a much more mature content making it one of the most violent animes available. That could be indeed a problem for those who dont like violence, because the viewer needs to get used to violent scenes to enjoy or tolerate this title. Whereas Lain wasnt that violent and could appeal to more viewers. Indeeed sometimes the amount of splatter and blood prevented this title to be as deep as Lain.

THere are questions posed of course in a cyberpunk setting where the majority of people in a dump city carry artificial limbs and yakuza gangs control everything, while there are also conflicts between factions, some of which are against texhnolyzation. There's also a faction that venerates the Seer (a girl that can see, but not accept for herself, the future) adding a post-apocalyptic atmosphere later on.

In here comes already from the first episode Ichise, a fighter in illegal fights, that becomes a member of Organon, a kind of yakuza that controls the amount of Texhnolization in Lokoss. Organon is subject to Class, a higher organization that after the middle of the series takes the initiative, thus making Texhnolyze even more violent and disturbing. Till the middle another organization exists, the Union, that is opposed to the process of texhnolyzation.
After the middle, and till episode 20 the series turns more action-oriented and violent and I liked it more. Some similarities with Lain appear in ep. 21 and 22. Also the first episodes, though slow paced, are perhaps more dark and serious than the rest but it was obvious that the problem of keeping this rhythm on for 22 episodes would be very difficult to tackle. So they added some action and gore elements to kill off time. But the shooting and violence were too much to my taste, since I expected a more intelligent title. They could have reduced them without affecting the enjoyment.

The characters, as in Lain, hardly talk and are uninspiring. But, as others pointed out, here the problem is that there are so many characters that having too many of them makes the interaction too flat sometimes. Especially Ichise's background about his father and mother is hardly explained, except just a few seconds in some episodes

As for animation, it was excellent, but in many scenes it was so pitch-black that I couldnt see the characters, even after adjusting the monitors brightness. That annoyed me a lot.
The splatter scenes wont be easily forgotten. Madhouse excelled themselves.

I also liked the intro music, one that needs full bass to be enjoyed. The rest of the BGM pieces were also fit for a cyberpunk theme.

The English dubs were excellent. The Japanese voices were Ok for the most part, even if generally dialog was sparse.

Also the relatively expensive Geneon DVD boxset is of high quality and has some very nice covers. But from what I read it is a pity that it had such a horrible translation. Since this is one of the difficult to grasp series and I dont know Japanese this becomes more of an issue.

A new fansub is on the way, with better translation. Hopefully they'll release some srt files so I can see the difference.

A must watch, but for me personally Lain was better.

This show is excellent. Created by many of the same people who made Serial Experiments Lain, this show shares a lot of its traits, both with its gloominess and its abstraction. However, the abstraction is toned down here just a bit in order to present a series more focused on dramatic storytelling than heady symbolism (though the heady symbolism is omnipresent here as well).

It's also immensely original. I've seen a lot of anime, and I can't really say I've seen any quite like this one. It's evocative, haunting, and nightmarish in its own strange and indescribable way.

_Texhnolyze_ is sometimes called the 5-year reunion of the staff of _Serial Experiments Lain_. It isn't difficult to see why, since both series shared much of the same staff, including Yoshitoshi ABe and Yasayaki Ueda, and both animes also share a similar style and tone. The difference between them? To me, _Texhnolyze_ is darker, more violent, and less pretentious, and hence much easier to understand than _Serial Experiments Lain_. This is not to say that _Texhnolyze_ is an easy watch; on the contrary, you must pay attention and be patient to this series to get to the payoff.

And what an effect; the best I can describe the series itself is an air of hopelessness and thoroughly depressing. The name of the series, Texhnolyze, refers to the technology of creating useable prosthetic body parts, and one of the basic premises of this series seems to be about whether this technology is good or bad for the future of humanity. In addition, the beginning of the series is basically about the (admittedly uninteresting) power struggle between yakuza gangs in this underground city, with the main protagonist being in the wrong place at the wrong time. But _Texhnolyze_ evolves beyond all of that and really makes a statement about the human division between higher-level intelligent idealism and base instinctual aggression. And while the anime itself leaves little room for hope, that hope is contained in the messages it gives.

As for potential viewers, I'd recommend that fans of _Serial Experiments Lain_ give this one a go. Fans of _Neon Genesis Evangelion_ and _Rahxephon_ that really enjoyed the philosophical ideas behind those series might like this one if they don't mind the lack of comedy, drama, color and happiness. Basically, fans of dark, violent thinkers should enjoy _Texhnolyze_; casual viewers should avoid this one.

I have to say this is good series but certainly not for any one with A.D.D. or who likes their entertainment with all flash and no depth.

The series can get slow at times, and you sure won't find the 'one evil boss per episode' theme here.

However, what you will find is a series that tries to address the issue of humanity and inhumanity in all of us. Along side of that, the feeling of apathy and care are explored. When should one just walk away and when is it our responsability to get involved?

For those of you who see this and notice details, you will notice there's actually a lot of thought into how situations are handled and the meaning behind them.

Something else note worthy was that to me, this is one of the most violent animes I have seen. Not because of the gore or how graphic it is. More than anything it's how violence is presented, and what it conveys. This truly felt like violence to me. It's ugly, it's painful and driven by anger and hate.

Texhnolyze. The only anime you may ever watch where the two best main characters rarely talk (if ever). I swear, I don't think Ichise talks at any point in the first 3 or 4 episodes. It's awesome.

What a weird show. I hardly understood the specifics of anything most the time but always had the general idea. That's what kind of anime Texhnolyze is. It is one of my top favorites now. I love stories like this. It is so unconventional.

This anime is weird. In the beginning, you have no idea what will happen and you never have a firm footing of what kind of world they live in. Towards the end, you've seem to have accepted it passively. However, the meaning of everything still evades you. It is definitely an anime that requires a second pass to understand everything, but the question is... is it worth it to?

Immediately, the viewer gets to see a gruesome event. The main character's limbs are severed, but he doesn't seem to mind. He shows some irrational stubborness that persists throughout the whole anime that I never understood. You never really figure out who the main character is, his goals, or his thoughts and I believe that he is more of a vehicle where you can see their crafted world from a particular perspective. Indeed, the side characters were more interesting as they actually had a cause to fight for.

Texhnolyze is based on some sort of three/four-way rivalry and the main character is smack at the front-lines. Not of his own will, though, but because he is following a charismatic leader. Because of the passive role of the main character, this anime heavily relies on its mysterious atmosphere around everything. Your attention is diverted to figuring out who belongs on which side and what they are fighting for. They did a good job of keeping you from finding out the answer until the end, where everything becomes even weirder...

This is not your usual anime. It has elements of GunGrave (a silent hero who relies on fighting to express himself) and Serial Experiment Lain (based in different world surrounded by a surreal aura). There is no straight forward or immediately goal to reach. Everyone lives in a state of almost losing themselves and their individuality. There are few moments of real joy and emotion and death is shown as a better alternative to a passive life.

My final verdict? This anime is way too slow in the beginning. Everything is too surreal and the ending is very unsatisfactory. There are a lot of memorable and passionate side character that make this more bearable, but the basic story isn't interesting. If you like thought-provoking, surreal anime, mixed with a lot of real interesting action scenes, then this is worth a shot.

Texhnolyze is a dark, slow-paced sci-fi anime that appealed to me due to its organized crime/mafia/yakuza element. This plays a central role in the show, because although the show gets extremely violent (like most mob films do), the show goes beyond that. The bulk of the show is really in its theme of human evolution, and the inevitability of human extinction, among other things. It is also esoteric in its own right, and it is difficult to boil down because it is far from conventional...

i.e. it is a weird anime, which even gets weird down to artwork, which is beautiful and gothic. Even the first episodes start out silent for a third of it, to the last episodes coming off as propaganda commercials from Nazi Germany. The plusses with the show are when the characters show the humanity, and "the inhumanity of humans." Cons are how the story pans out; while it is a unique and thoughtful story, it is more upsetting and moves at the pace it does because of how it was initially set up. This one is definitely a piece of art, but proceed with caution, because this show also requires all of your attention.

Grade wise, it is trapped between a C+ and a B-. This is not definitely a love or hate anime, though it can be, and for me perosnally, it is a conflicted appreciation for it, especially if you go into this title open minded, which you must be to enjoy this title whatsoever.
