| my opinion:
ninja scroll tv is in its genre one of the worst i have seen so far. if you like ninja or samurai anime watch kenshin or naruto. ninja scroll is far below average in every category. i will go into detail why i think its so bad.
ANIMATION
for an anime that was published in 2003 the animation is just bad. it reminds me more of the late 90s. the background is just unimaginatively drawn. when you compare it to some masterpieces like ghost in the shell the difference in effort they put into making these two anime gets to you your mind. it all seems rushed and not very well worked out. 6 points for the animation is more than enough.
SOUND
the opening song is very good. it brings you into a melancholic mood. the only problem is that ninja scroll has nothing to do with melancholy. so its kinda misplaced. the ending song is nothing you would listen to on your own accord. it ruins everything and fits in this bungled anime very well. 6 points for the sound because i liked the opening music.
STORY
if there is a story then it focuses on kibagami jubei. he is a very lazy samurai who is as strong as kenshin. he happens to meet a girl named shigure who is in posession of a jewel. while shigure and jubei are talking about traveling her village gets attacked and she has to flee. what she didnt know, she is the waitress, priestess and witch of light which is all pretty much the same. on her flight she meets a monk who saves her. he now travels alongside shigure to bring her safely to her destination where she can find if and what the priestess, waitress and witch of light is. at times jubei join in at the very right time and saves the day. there is also a young thief in their group whi is always near to steal the jewel but in the end never gets it. he is called tsubude.
its very interesting to see that in each eps there are minimum 3 new characters. they mostly dont have a background. they just fight for an organization called kimonshu. they are after the jewel and the big boss sends them three of his underlings each eps. thats pretty much the story and i thin its very poor. i gave it 3 points because it fails to get interesting. the story is rushed and i think they didnt put much though into it. it is just so unoriginal. like i already mentioned it is done after the sailor moon concept. the nig boss sends his underling who get defeated in each eps and then it comes to the big showdown. so far one of the worst stories, even worse than somme hentai stuff.
CHARACTER
in this category ninja scroll tv shows its potential. they have so many ideas and create fantasyfull beings. they just forgot to put a soul in. it has its great moments wit the guy that has parasyte in his stomach and wishes for it to leave. that eps was okay but it doesnt follow after this good example.
kibagami jubei appears to be a lazy superhero who has unhuman strength but no past as it seems.
shigure is the waitress, priestess and witch of light. she is very weak and has to be saved all the time. to be true i wished her to be killed.
the monk dakuro is an odd man. you can never estimate if he is good or bad. in one eps he tries to get away with the jewel but in the next he risks his life again to save the girl.
tsubude the young thief is the stupid one. he is frightened very easyily and just travels together with them. he joins the group to get a hold of teh jewel as well but jubei always destroys his plans.
they are the four main charaters who you never get to like. you just never get a chance to feel something for them because jubei has to fight worthlessly. 6 points because jubei is pretty cool and because the monsters that pop up out of nowhere all the time are very fantasyfull donw.
VALUE
the value is low. they didnt even try to make it bit more fastidiously. like i said it has potential but never gets to use it. i give 4 points because there are still worse anime in category of value out there. compared to hentai for example.
ENJOYMENT
i watched this because i heard the move was well done. i dont really like watching movies too much so i decided on watching the series and i got disappointed very much. 7 points because its a simple-minded anime that is not very hard to watch. i watched it in 4 days and got sleepy. so you can use it as a sleeping pill nevertheless you can enjoy it also. but i dont know who i would recommedn this to. probably none.

| Ok i recently saw the Ninja Scroll TV series, i watched it before the Movie (so the movie woul've had less impact).
First thing off don't watch this if you want a good plot, or character development. It lacks that stuff (go watch Gungrave). What it does have are enjoyable fights and weird, but good character designs.
The plot is basically non-excistant, and is actually just an excuse to get the main chars into big fights.
Music from the intro and ending are pretty good. The music that's shown inside the anime are decent. I didn't really focus on it, but it wasn't bad.
Animation good as alway's from Madhouse, nice battles.
Characters have cool character design's, they die too fast before the get some development though. But the designs are one of the coolest out there.
I really did enjoy this anime because i didn't really took it too serious. It's what it say's a spagetthi western, don't watch it if you are expecting a decent plot, because it lacks that stuff. But it does have good battles, nice character designs, so if you are into that stuff watch it.

| The Ninja Scroll movie was great but this is so obviously a poorly thought out attempt to cash in on its success. Fans of the movie beware, I found this series has even slightly tarnished my impression of the movie and I wish I had never started watching it. Stick to the movie, and give this a wide skip!

| Ninja Scroll TV is like the movie in numerous ways (which in my case isn’t a good thing). The movie is recognised as as a classic, and to an extent I agree, but this was 13 episodes of close to the most uninspiring, formulaic, repetitive anime I have ever seen.

| What a sad excuse to cash in on the "Ninja Scroll" name. This series has nothing to do with the movie besides Jubei and the old man being in it. This series isn't worth a long review so I'll keep it short.
The best thing this series has going for is the artwork and animation. Shigure, the series main female lead, is beautiful but it's a shame her design was wasted in this series. Jubei is same ruff and cool looking badass he is always portrayed to be. The monsters introduced each episode gets uglier and uglier along the way but I'll they their designs were pretty cool as well.
Sound is bad, for some reason the creators thought it was ok to include rock and techno..well it wasn't. It never fits the mood of the action scenes and actually brings them down, they aren't that good anyways. The Opening and Ending theme are the only worthwhile tracks, the ED moreso than the OP. Slightly interesting fact is that they are called "Jubei's Theme" and Shigure Theme" respectedly.
And the main flaw of the series is the story or lack of it, the pacing, and inconsisty of it. Every episode a new villian/monster appears and shortly after Jubei draws his blade. The fight scenes would be so much better if there was an actual sense of conflict in them. Jubei is literally too good of a swordsman in this series that makes all fight scenes boring. You catch on to this feeling after the 3rd or 4th monster he hacks away. The villians also lack any sort of depth to them so you don't care if they die even though there are a few that tries to pull off a tear jerking scene during their death.
The inconsisty problem is VERY noticeable. At the end of one episode Jubei is together with the gang then at the beginning of the next is off in forest by himself somewhere looking for them again and it never explains how he got seperated. Cases like that happens far too many times before the end of the series.
Characters development..there was none or at it's best was very weak. Shigure is a good example of the latter but her archtype has been done in some many series it's well expected how she would turn out. The old man, theif character, and even Jubei remained the same as they were from episodes 1-2.
The only reason to watch this anime is too see how bad it is and how poorly it lives up to the Ninja Scroll name. Even just for it's action it fails to deliver. The only thing this series has going for is if you actually enjoy watchng an overpowered Jubei.

| I was very disappointed to not see the purple sash from the Ninja Scroll movie. The Old Man is here too, but he's seem not to have met Jubei before, so there is basically no relation to the movie.
This story is also really weak. The enemies are really.... unimpressive and in this anime series, unlike the movie, the villains are the main point really because there is a lot of useless action fighting that doesn't seem to have a real point to it. The story is just some small journey with lots of worthless segments happening...
Character-wise, there is nothing impressive as well. Jubei develops even less of a character compared with that of the movie. He has no passion for anything, but he's just some typical even almost to the point of obnoxious protaganist. He's just some cool fighter guy... or that's what they try to do. The kid has no redeeming qualities... almost to the point that he's just randomly there. The Princess is also nothing great in terms of some gaining some special feeling towards her. I dont feel sympathy, compassion, or admiration. She also looks more Chinese than Japanese.
Animation is too simplistic. Unlike the movie, it is not very artistic, its just drawn animation. Plain and dull.

| I watched the movie almost a year ago. Don't remember much, but only that it was good.
This is not the case with series. Animation is maybe the strongest part of anime, character design is good, lot's of pretty girls (good or evil) and mediocre bg scenes. Animation is fluid enough to be acceptable, but no where near the high quality standards set by other 2003 animes. To compare, Elfen Lied, which had almost as much action, blood and gore, had a Hugely better overall impression of quality then this series.
Sound was just horrible... All the repeatitive groaling, moaning, screaming and yapping of villains made it hard to keep the volume up. Music was ok, though sound acting was mediocre at best.
Story was plain and simple, thank god there were not more then 13 eps (could do very well with 7-8 eps too).
Characters were just plain lacking! Everyone seemed to know Jubei, yet they never really explained how or why? Random new NAMELESS! villains popping in all the time doesn't exactly help you get in touch with characters. They should have used fewer enemies, yet given more detailed coverage of their actions..
Overall, this anime is ok to pass time. Only watch this if you have nothing better to watch, or you want/like pointless action scenes.

| To sum the series up using Jubei's words -- everywhere you go there are ninjas to kill.
The TV series is not as good as the movie, but it is still quite enjoyable. This series have all the major ingredients of a good old sweet ninja flick -- ninjas flipping out of nowhere; fast, clean action; "as if I'm a saint" attitude; hesitant free killings; free flowing supply of enemies.
I really enjoyed the fast paced slick killings after watching Naruto and "Flame of Recca", where the good guys are too good to kill anyone and fighting scenes get dragged on for multiple episodes; A ninja tries to kill you, so you kill him before he does, it is that simple. No bullshit about saving the world and making people happy.
Story ? What story ? Forget it. It is just an execuse to up the body count.
Characters: Jubei is ultra cool and bloody sweet. A ninja have to be sweet if he kills the next guy that is disturbing his sleep just like that. The Light Maiden is just bloody ordinary and boring, her character prevented me from rating the show any higher. Dakuan didn't have any of dirty tactics that he had in the movie, another disappointment.
The free flowing action with nothing holding back makes the series really good for chilling out. It is such a smooth and elegant blood opera.
If you're looking for anything else that is not mentioned above, then don't bother. If you watched the series and didn't enjoy it, I'll tell Jubei (but he probally won't care anyway).

| This serie doesn't worth calling it Ninja Scroll, it's a shame for the ''real'' Ninja Scroll. I don't even consider this serie existed for the sake of Ninja Scroll!!!
Animation: It really outdated for beeing a 2003's anime.
Sound: The sound effect is ok, but the voices, ......... no comments.
Story: The story is ok.
Character: I was so dispointed; the plot has almost no depth. Jubei in this serie is very different from the one in the movie and it is in a bad way.
Value: I gave a 3 and I felt I was generous.
Enjoyment: Well, if you like blood more than real action and you have real but REAL free time, then this serie may be for you. But for real Ninja Scroll fan, this isn't for you. I call this serie; Ninja Scroll wannabe, even though it calls Ninja Scroll TV. A big dispoinment!!

| blood floods of senseless killing, one layered plot and almost non-existent character development makes for a pretty poor anime
:: jubei's theme (music) despite being pretty cool the first time is overused, or at least every piece was a similar variation of it...disappointing
::plot was extremely linear...so simple...just the light maiden and getting the stone...with 13 episodes there could have been much more complexity but each episode was a just senseless killfest...end of story.
:: characters hardly developed...they remained the same the whole way through
::value...no meaning
::enjoyment ~ 3 only because it passed time
overall, ninja scroll is a pretty meaningless anime without depth. i would only watch it if u like killfests and blood floods...thats all i thought of it really...

| This series was very appealing, and it's worth the buy. A fitting sequel to the NS film, in this series we get to see Jubei's human side and leadership qualities. The subliminal romance with Shiyu is compelling, and the supporting protagonists are very funny without going over the top. The enemies are varied and complex, but once again the plot boggs down in historical politics that we ultimately don't care about and an objective (treasure) that is too lame for these great warriors. I mean, Indy Jones goes looking for treasure too, but he ends up fighting the evil Nazis to save the world. In this series we just feel like Jubei is preventing the demons from getting paid. Of course he wants to save Shiyu, but I wish the "universe hung in the balance" a little more. With mysterious, magical items like the Dragon Gem at the center of our attention, you'd think they could back it up with some higher purpose. Visuals are impressive as always (though a bit cheap looking at times for an anime of this quality), and the opening theme song is awesome. A little philosophy and humor is splashed in at the right times, and it's worth seeing multiple times (and you might have to if the subtitles on your copy are as bad as mine!).

| not as quite detailed as the ninja scroll movie, but the animation was oustanding. it was kind of goofy at times how their was so much mecha in it. oh and if you think about it, jubei is more of a samurai than a ninja . i dont see any relation to teh title of this anime at all. sometimes the story even got offtrack and the pacing was weird. i felt at times when i went to the next episode i feel like ive skipped an episode. the sound is nothing special. and the characters, well jubei was your average comic book hero with cheesy lines. the plot itself was OK, it was just the way it was developed was bad. yea there was lots of senseless blood. so overall this is a pretty good anime butit could have been a lot more enjoyable .

| After watching the series, I can't help but wonder where they went wrong. This should be a great series but something seemed to through it off and it end up being just okay.
There is semi-believable plot (check)
Lots of Bloody sword battles (check)
Hero ninja with good one liners (check)
Comic relief sidekick (check)
Interesting Villans (check)
hmm, I guess the problem is that the whole concept isn't that original, and it doesn't hold a candle to the action and animation of the movie.
If it weren't for the fact this was named Ninja Scroll, it probably would be rated worse.
Though some real problem I had was the sound, voice acting, and storyline.
At times the music seemed very annoying and then overused.
The voices for some of the characters were a bit grating at first as well (especially if you've seen the movie).
Sometimes from episode to episodes the placement of characters was off, for example at the end of an episode two of the characters were together then in the next they were in different groups?
There a few other plot holes that didn't really add up either.
I can't really recommend this to someone new to anime but if you're a fan of seemingly pointless gorey sword fights then this title isn't too bad.

| "Ninja Scroll" the movie was the reason for my first foray into anime when I was in high school. I use the movie to sort of "baptize" my friends into the realm of anime... showing the them the creativity and action/adventure storylines that can only be found in Japanese titles. That was in 1996... 8 years later, I'm out of high school, in college, and going through an "anime rebirth" of sorts. When I heard my first love was being published in a 13-episode TV series, I went bonkers. Bought all 3 DVD's, thought my love would be rekindled... unfortunately, my love was drenched with a bucket of cold water in the form of a pale storyline and scenes of blood and gore that made absolutely no sense whatsoever.
After watching the entire series, I began questioning if that was the whole reason I got into anime in the first place. Was it the violence and bloodletting that made me love anime? Was it the brief scenes of nudity that turned me to anime? Were it those things that I couldn't find in Western animation that made me turn to the East for entertainment?
No. The reason I love "Ninja Scroll" the movie was the creativity in the characters. The powers that they possessed, the tendencies that they showed, and the personalities that they had that made me stray from the West and head East. It's because of character development and design that made me fall in love anime. "Ninja Scroll" the TV series tries to take advantage of the "bloodthirsty" stereotype of the Western anime enthusiast. Throw in buckets of blood and make for the lackluster storyline... that was the plan. I unfortunately bought the DVDs before knowing how empty and hollow this series is. Don't make the same mistake.

| I was really looking forward to this when it was announced, being a big fan of the movie, but what can i say? Most ppl here have already pointed out that this is truly a pathetic excuse for an anime..and i (Sadly) agree 100%.
Basically there is zero story, none, nada, zilch. Every episode is a fight, with some monster that ends the second jubei pulls out his sword. Music is crappy(except for the intro), doesn't go with the feduel japan environment..and WTF is with all the mecha shit, this is NINJA SCROLL FOR GOD'S SAKE, NOT GUNDAMN SCROLL, jeez. The only plus point would be the animation, while its not AAA, its decent, but what's the point anyway? Its totally wasted.
Please skip this anime, a waste of paint, colours, cells and filming equiment...as well as ur time.

| I had high hopes for this series. I mean, Jubei was one of the first ninjas to introduce me to the world of anime. I was so excited to see that they had made this series. After seeing the entire thing, I'm actually pretty disappointed. The characters are hollow, the villians are predictable and the whole story just feels like it's going nowhere. Usually when I get a series, I get so wrapped up in them that I finish the entire thing within 2 to 3 days. It took me over 3 weeks to watch 13 episodes. That's how little I cared about it.
I found it very predictable. An enemy shows up, tries to capture the Jade Dragon, Jubei comes right in the nick of time, does a Quick Slash, and the monster dies. Only one episode actually stood out at me and that was when Jubei had to battle a guy named "Guts" (no, not the Berserk Guts).
Overall, watch it if you're a fan, but I wouldn't rank it on the must have list.

| What have they done?! It seems like someone other than the Japanese made this one. Its soooooooo... NOT GOOD.
WHY ruin JUBEI? They made him super arrogant! He smiles way to much. This is completely different compared to his character in ninja scroll. Also, they gave him some special power where he just slices the wind and it kills people. WTF? Why change him? He was great before, now they ruined him. Also, they added rock n roll music to the anime.. NEVER DO THAT. Seems so out of place its rediculous. The action isnt that great either. The episodes repeat each other in this way. A bad demon guy comes, does wierd things, dies by Jubei, repeat. Every episode up to 7 so far is the same(havent watched 7-13 yet). I dont know if I will finish the series, but I doubt it can be saved from being so bad.

| This is an insult to the ninja scroll name and easily the most disappointing anime I have seen. The addition of technology looked completely out of place for the time period (I know there are freaks everywhere - but that is acceptable). Most of the humour was aimed at children and then they would show some freak getting raped by another one. If there is another film or series then this will surely be ignored in a similar fashion to Highlander 2 by the makers.
