| A detective anime that involves great characters and brilliant cases and tricks. It is a must-see for any police-criminal fan.
However, this anime is more lighthearted because of the younger age range of the main characters and the lack of action. The main characters do brush against death themselves, but not often.
Nevertheless, each case is mind-wrapping and wonderfully crafted. And I can see the characters growing, bonding with improving group dynamics as the anime progresses. Halfway through the anime, the larger plot emerges, casting doubt on one of the main character.
All in all, Detective Academy Q is enjoyable, with some lighthearted elements thrown in a pot of serious tragedies.

| A very engaging murder mystery anime (and there aren't too many of those around!).
Has a cast of fun characters, intriguing and oft time sinister murder cases and although you won't always be able to guess "who dunnit", you'll have fun trying to figure things out for yourself.
Definitely worth a watch ^__^

| This anime works, the story works, but the animation is quite sloppy. The anime is directly an adaptation from the manga with an additional few eps which serves as a side story.

| Tantei Gakuen Q is a detective series very similar to Detective Conan, both shows mentioned usually focuses on solving murder mysteries, though in my opinion, this is better. I said that because in ths series there's a group of detectives helping each other in solving cases which is more believable unlike in Detective Conan where just one character is trying to solve all the mysteries.
The first few episodes focused on detective exams organized by Morihiko Dan, the principal of the detective school. The exams are, of course, to know if certain students have potentials, those who passed are divided into class A, B, C, and Q. The 5 main characters Kyuu, Megumi, Kazuma, Kinta and Ryuu belong to class Q which is the highest of the 4 sections.
After the detective exams, the succeeding parts are of course full of mystery cases that needs to be solved by class Q. I think all of thoses cases are great, but for me the best ones are: (1) The murder mystery of a medium killed inside a room where a seance ritual is being held to call the spirit of a dead person. (2) The mystery of a murderer broadcasting his kiilings over the internet which just started with people lying about their identities over a chat room (3) The case about a crazy man who planted a bomb in a department store (4) The part when Kyuu and Meg got locked inside a secret room in the old building where their section helds its class and (5) The murder mystery of a writer killed inside her room.

| The wheels of fate are at it again. Everywhere our characters go, there will be some sort of incident happening. (Detective Conan anyone?). However, there are quite a few differences between these episodes. Some good, and some not so good.
First of all, I find it extremely annoying that they try to limit each character to only what they are good at, and then create some sort of situation in order to accomodate that special power of theirs. None of the characters are well rounded and that just plain sucks. Instead of interesting character personalities that change the environment around them, we have the story fitting the mold of the characters.
Despite this fact, these characters remain consistently humorous (if you find their actions humorous in the first place). Kyu is the typical I'm good at nothing but solving mysteries. Megu is the overemotional girl with the photographic memory that helps from time to time. Kinta is the muscles and acts on pure instinct and luck (he relies on dice some of the time). Kazuma is a boy genius who is immature yet tries to be mature at the same time. Put this all together, and we have a team that rivals (or perhaps mimics) the Shounen Tantei from Detective Conan.
The aspect that I most appreciate about this series is that it allows viewers to watch the detective stories, but it also carries some sort of weight with story progression. As we all know, Det. Conan does not have a forseeable ending... and for those who want something kind of "short but sweet", this is a decent watch. I find the setting of a Detective School and all the training sessions that ensue to be a great premise for random mysteries. Quite fun!
As for whether one can actually solve the mysteries presented in the series, no... this is primarily NOT a who-dun-it, well not a good one. Sometimes you can make lucky guesses as they make it kind of obvious with the clues lying around, but some of the time, it is just a "watch while we unravel the mystery and show how cool our teamwork is". This is because there are quite a few episodes which are more theme/story oriented rather than let's find the clues. Still, I like this genre and it is fun watching the story unfold.
As a fan and my open mindedness towards all and any detecitve animes, I thought that was okay. The mysteries themselves are kind of weak but they gradually improve over time. Rather than a true hardcore detective "solve that mystery" anime, this is more of a storytelling, adventure, let's do our best together type of anime. As long as you don't expect to be wowed by the intricate murder tricks, the fun character interactions and the few but interesting twists make this anime worth watching for the detective story fan.

| This is actually one of the best animes I have ever seen! It is so suspenseful, the characters are all unique, and fun to watch, and the stories are very well thought out.
Another plus is the fact that the viewer can solve mysteries with the characters. There are enough clues to determine the culprit if you "think outside the box" so to speak.
I cannot express enough how addicting this is to watch too. It is like you just HAVE to watch until the culprit is discovered and sometimes that is about 3 or 4 episodes or a couple of hours of television for a mystery.
(Based on episodes 1-30 and there are 45 episodes so I hear)

| I must've admit that I downloaded this show by mistake and ended up watching the first 4 episodes of it just because I didn't want to delete my bandwidth's efforts just yet. The show was however, fascinating. Even though I am not a big fan of the whole detective genre, it did urge me to download the rest of available episodes.
Aside from the fact that the little detectives treat their culprits too nice from time to time, most of the crimes are not only believable but also enjoyable (hmm, enjoyable crimes...) The fact that the animation quality as whole took a turn for the better after episodes 25 spoke for itself as a sign of the show's gaining popularity in Japan.
Anyhow, watch it and enjoy it. And if you can watch it without relying on the subtitles, you will find the show that much MORE interesting.

| *20 Episodes watched*
The high point of this series is for mystery fans, the mysteries and their solutions are very well done. A few seemed to be contradictory, but not bad on rewatching. Most of them I could get about 1/2 to 2/3rds of the mystery, which to me is the fun of mystery stories, trying to solve it as they do. I pause it at least 3 times a show, and many times rewatch parts in the better mysteries. The rest of the show is average, but the planning of the mysteries is thorough and well done.

| Really great as a detective anime! I's quite the first "good" anime that I have seen. Others include Pokemon(yuk) and DBZ.
The characters are very good. I like Ryu the best but even Kazuma's good. Kyu, of course is great as a detective and Meg is sharp enough. Kinta is funny.
As for the animation, DSQ exels but it isn't as good as some other anime.
I've given the sound rating for the english dub so don't mind.
The story is excelent and the mystry does more than its job. All the clues are just in front of us. It's really difficult to guess who the murderer is before it is revealed. By the way, my favorite episode is the one of Jack the Ripper (ep. 8)

| This anime, Detective School Q, is one of the best anime ever. The characters really show great detective skills while investigating. Though sometimes it may get a bit boring, there is always comedy in very single episode. It may have not that much romance, but there still is at the last episode. I hope you enjoy this anime too.

| Overall its really not a bad anime to kill time with. its worth watching if you're into mysteries. Just like Detective Conan, the story seems to be floating somewhere in the air. They don't really do anything else but solve crimes. But Nonetheless, the mysteries keep me wanting to know what happens next, so thats a PLUS. Another Plus is that each mystery case has a minimal coverage of at least 2 episodes. Thats why the mysteries in DAQ are more interesting than Detective Conan's.
Although the characters are original in my opinion, I wish they would add some effort in character and enviornment development. The background of each character are almost unknown. They should add more details about the school also. If they are able to accomplish this, it would actually be an anime I would watch over again.

| Wow! This is a darn addictive show. I wasn't sure what to expect from DAQ when I started but it hooked me fast. As long as you're willing to suspend your disbelief, it's quite interesting.
Be warned, despite it's somewhat kiddy appearance, some of the cases can be a bit dark and depressing but that's what makes it so gripping.

| Well my first impressions that this anime is just another detective conan. But as i reached episode 23 i can honestly say that this is not true. This is a great detective anime with a very interesting story covered in mistery. Characters are are well developed and the OP song is also very nice.

| Very Good! The writers of this Manga/Anime has clervely written the story to keep the audiences in their toes. The charters they have created for this story has enough mystery of their own. although this is clearly Kyu's story, I like Ryu best. If I had one wish for this story - I would wish for a Ryu-Meg romantic moments. Kempai!

| This anime will attract for those who like detective stories like me. The cases which are shown are very tricky and really hard to solve but at least they show how to solve it. I'm so impressed to the characters because they can solve hard cases already at a young age. For the kids who want to watch these..Parental Guidance please..

| Detective Academy Q is another foray into the scarce "detective" genre, borrowing heavily from novel classics like Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie's murder plots. Unlike S. Holmes though, D.A.Q (detective academy Q) actually presents a good amount of information so that the audience could possibly solve some problems as well. I know I have. Anyhow, the animation is passable, sound is unremarkable - and Kyuu (the protagonist) is kinda annoying BUT what we look for in a detective anime are the mysteries right? Well, D.A.Q presents some pretty decent mysteries. In fact, I think the mysteries are darker than D. Conan's (another detective anime). Moreover, D. Conan's mysteries are all resolved within 1-2 episodes, whilst D.A.Q's cases take 1-4 episodes to solve. There's one similarity between nearly all detective animes tho - and that is they all involve characters that the detectives meet. I'm obviously fine with that since it's pretty much a given, but some people might dislike it and label this little convention as a "cliche".
The mysteries in D.A.Q are quite complex and probably rival those of D.Conan's. However, I watched D.A.Q and D.Conan differently in that when I watched D.Conan I didn't try figuring out the mystery at all whilst in D.A.Q I attempted to put some of my deductive reasoning.
In conclusion, D.A.Q is a decent anime to watch and could get very addictive, very fast.

| The animation is pretty good with the movements. The character sound, for example, Ryu, a character who look serious should have even more serious voice so that it would fit the character. The story is excellent! The way the detectives solve the mysteries, the way they find prooves, etc. The design of the characters... need I say more? It's the GREATEST, EXCELLENT, NICEST, COOLEST!! The values? Need I say more? Too many. I can't remember them! Anyways, it's a VERY VERY VERY interesting story! I enjoy watching the show! ^^

| Although the animation is quite typical of an anime, the storyline is really exceptional. Every anime episode would make its viewers yearn for more, because the plot for every detective endeavor is distinctly made and quite engaging and fascinating.
I find this title a must-have for any anime-enthusiast.

| The animation for this series is not as good as it could be being made in 2003. The overall story is decent, but it is really the individual cases that make it interesting. I really enjoy watching it try to solve out the mysteries before hand, which in most case is quite hard because they give the characters more info than show. The mysteries are all very interesting and fun to watch being solved, however they are somewhat predictable. Like you know that each case is going to a murder cases and nothing else, and that the murder always returns or is present at the scene of the crime (which is dumb for the murderer, but this is anime). The characters also lack humanity. Don't get me wrong, they are all very lively and get into their character, but they don't really show the human part of sadness or fear. Since they are dealing with murder cases, death is all around them, yet they don't seem to worry about dying or being hurt or show much sympathy so it all ends up being a bit unrealistic. This doesn't affect the overall enjoyment much, but is noticable as well as other little things. Still very good to watch, which uses your brain more than most anime series.

| Episode 21 just came out as I write and with it the second and perhaps most existing long-winded arc came to a conclusion.
Despite the very colorful look of this anime the cases it deals with are almost always grizzly murders and mind-twisting enigmas.
If you can get used to the contrast between the cheerful young clique and the often dark and mysterious puzzles you will enjoy this show from the same author as Young Kindachi's adventures.
