This is definitely not a bad movie/addition to the kino travel`s series but alone it doesn`t stand too good. Compared to the series you didn`t really get the sense of the "travels" part of the story. I mean they do kinda show her go around a very little bit but not alot. On the otherhand this is a very informative movie which fills in alot of gaps that the series does not explain. The major focus of this series was to explain the gap between before Kino started travelling and after she escaped from her hometown.

Sound
The sound is also almost the same as the series. They use the same opening and very similiar ost to the series. They also have the same voice actors of course :p. I liked all the aspects so it all worked out well. Although during the series at least in the beginning you didn`t know if Kino was a boy or girl... It is quite clear in the movie he IS a girl. The one thing I found weird was Kino`s voice sounded more masculine with short hair then long... I`m not sure if it`s because I wanted to think he was a boy or if they actually did something there.

Story
The story wasn`t too groundbreaking. Since like I`ve already said it just fills in gaps not much is developped. Although during the series you never found a real main plot but still it was more effective then the movie. The short stories in the series all had little lessons and twists to them. Whereas in the movie you didn`t really find too big of a plot twist. I guess it was rather simple and straightforward.

basically.... i had some mixed feelings seeing both the show and the movie but overall, it wasn't too good... but it is watchable

Animation and sound are good, but nothing extra.

Story and character: Kino, a girl traveling around the world (different from ours), getting know to new countries, meeting different people. Most of the countries and their people have weird habits (weird for Kino and for us). These are quite instructive encounters in many ways. First you can learn how cruel or how nice can people be, second you can learn not to judge people just because they are different.
The story and the characters are the strong point of this series.

Value and enjoyment: it has a good story but somehow it didn't make me watch the episodes fast after eachother. Somehow it was still boring for me at some points. Definitely not going to rewatch it.

Kino no Tabi is a thinking man’s anime because it doesn’t tell you what to think. It presents you with different sides of human nature, some good, but mainly bad and lets you draw the conclusions. It doesn’t try to pretty things up, or explain why humans act a certain way, or offer a cure-all. It lays the world at the viewer’s feet; this is who we are, and this is what we do. What you think of it, where you go with it, whether you agree with it, is up to you.

I cannot stress enough (although i suppose typing that stresses it as much as possible, which could be deemed 'enough') how much I love and cherish this series. Though I downloaded it before its US dvd release, it was one series I was sure to purchase if not just to have it in a more concrete form than files. I can't think about it without getting a sense of wonder, sorrow, happiness, curiosity, intruige, and basically any emotion that goes along with those. Not many series can provide these feelings at a mere reminiscing . I have voted all 10s not as a fickle attempt at up-voting, but because to me, everything adds up perfectly. I'm sure it could be better, but at no point while watching the series did I think "hmm, the sound there isn't quite up to par. " or "Hmm...that animation needs more detail/color" or anything such as that. The story strikes multiple chords with me on a vast amount of levels, and Kino is one of my favorite characters in any work of fiction. Her alone is enough to make that a 10. Even value gets a whole 10. Yes, it left me wanting more, not because there was too little, but because there couldn't be too much. I've come back to note this: midway through this review, I popped in the 4th dvd to have an episode on in the background and those 22 minutes passed as if 5. I am not exaggerating. I began the review, and the next thing I know, I'm done with the review and the episode was over. I am bewildered. It really did not feel like 20 minutes at all.

Yes, yes, it's meant to portray a wandering and unique person's developing philosophy of the world, of its goods and bads. But KNT does it in a way thats very ineffective. A visually and audially dry series, KNT mistakes simplicity for lack. Depth of character is so wanting--not complexity, but depth, though neither of them are present. All characters seem to be very formulaic (formula of Kino: stoic character in explorable surroundings, teaching us all a lesson). The creators do not seemed to have paid attention to the visual aspect, the dramatic aspect, the emotional aspect, the human aspect. It seems like a bunch of trite fables picked out with place holder characters in them. Most annoying were the ever repeating screens of static text...which were just absolutely un-intriguing dialogue the characters spoke a second ago. The characters are, again, dull and poorly developed, and inhabit scenarios such as 'A saves B's and C's life, but after coming back from the grave B and C try to harm/rob A': such trite ironies! And you can't have a main character who is nothing and who is surrounded by nothing! Only the last episode was slightly touching, and then it is too late. A big problem in novel to screen adaptaion is 'adaptation', not transferrance. A novel is made of words, an anime out of pictures and sounds. Both need to be strong in their domains to be considered 'good'. KNT, as an anime, is not.

Kino no Tabi is not your normal anime series out there. It is one of those - slow down, take some time to appreciate and take a look at the world around us type of anime. While there are quite a few anime series which deal with worldly issues, KnT does not forcefully make a stand with its lead character. Via Kino's visits to each country, KnT shows its viewers the various happenings that can occur when certain humanity traits and issues are pushed to extremes.
While slow and uneventful at times, the series will still manage to draw you in with the atmosphere it creates. The storytelling is as intriguing as the atmosphere. The only regretful thing is that it is so short a series. Based on a novel series and being so episodic in nature, I felt it should have alot more to go for it. However, since this anime series is definitely not mainstream, popularity is probably a factor for its short stint.
Highly recommended only for mature viewers who like thought provoking shows.

Kino no Tabi belongs to a unique breed of primarily cerebral anime, and interestingly enough, despite my general favouring of more "typical" anime genres, I decided to give Kino no Tabi a chance and am eternally grateful that I did.

I can't say I really liked the idea of watching an anime about a girl who rode around on a motorbike; it just didn't sound like the sort of thing I would enjoy, but I have to say that Kino's Journey surprised me and I enjoyed watching it very much.
I'm a big fan of fables and fairytales and this aspect is what I found the most appealing ^__^

My favorite anime ever. Finally, something different than the dime-a-dozen harems. Kino is an anime that's a bit like Gulliver's Travels and explores various "what if the world was like this" scenarios. If you want an anime that will make you think, than this is for you. The characters are actually all likeable, even if there are only two main characters, one being a motorbike. Approach this one with maturity, intelligence, and an open mind or you won't enjoy it.

(ADV version, japanese voices only. Also the 13 minute episode titled ''Free Lance- The Tower Country'' by United Anime fansubs)

Based on the novels by Keiichi Sigsawa with direction by Serial Experiments Lain director Ryutaro Nakamura and script by Boogiepop Phantom screenwriter Sadayuki Murai, Kino no Tabi was a definite must watch for me. This is one of the best animes I've seen.

A truly mesmerizing experience. Another must watch as many reviewers here unhesitatingly show.

Though the concept might sound simple about a girl with her talking motorrad travelling across various fantasy countries, in fact this is one of the deepest and most philosophical animes I've seen.

I imagine that most of you are familiar with the classic masterpiece ''Little Prince''. If you've read the novel and enjoyed it I'm sure you'll enjoy Kino no Tabi too. Though it doesnt reach the magic of the novel it certainly has some magic moments of its own.

Kino as a characters proves yet another time that a character doesnt need to be talkative or emotional to be impressive. She's a traveler and chooses to be distant in her emotions so as not to be attracted by any country. Thats why she chooses to stay for only 3 days in every country she visits. But when she has to she can be a helpful but also punishing character where need be. Her stance of life though is as a traveler simply to observe and let the people decide for themselves what to do. That was the main reason she left her hometown as the viewer will find in ep4.
I liked her in an instant.

Hermes on the other hand is overall a funny character (a talking motorrad afterall isnt so common) and is always quering things around her ( I mean the motorcycle). Though she can also be as poignant and cynic as Kino sometimes.

Various other characters appear in individual episodes and in them the viewer will see all aspects of human nature. Though in the Colosseum episodes the character with the white dog reappears also in the novels at some point.

Some episodes were shattering. Some depict human cruelty, desperation and stupidity in a way that will leave the viewer pondering till the end. But it is the way they're depicted. Rather in an allegoric manner, with many parallels in today's society. For a 13 episode series Kino no Tabi raises some important questions. Also an allusion to books and to Kafka's ''The Castle'' is made in one episode. Overall a well crafted story and considering this isnt exclusively sci-fi, it is overall of the best stories I came across adapting the novel chapters very well, though the viewer here doesnt need to have read the novels as in Boogiepop Phantom.

Animation resembles the magnificent illustration of the novels a lot, especially in the colours though it is generally sparse, except the Colosseum action scenes.

Sound is also Ok with a very good OP and ED theme and good orchestral music that doesnt become annoying.

Overall a must watch for serious animation fans. Of the best animated series I've seen.

I read also the first volume published by Tokyopop. I hope they improve a little the translation and add some more colour pages but overall I found the first volume a good read, even if a little too introductory for my age. The anime adapts the novel chapter quite well. The novels of course have better character interaction, some small differences in the story of each chapter and more graphical details, especially in the Colosseum and Land of Peace chapter. Books are recommended too.

Although this anime seems to be very deep (and perhaps is), this anime just never connected with me emotionally. I think this anime truly had a great potential to become a great anime. I like the rather unconventional format of the anime as well as the thematic material they tried to express. But at the end this anime felt like reading a philosophical or a history book rather than watching an anime series. And also to its disadvantage this anime never really attempt to put together the vast phiosophical content or explain some backgrounds to what Kino is really about. There is one episode on her past but to me it was not enough.

Why did this anime series feel like a history text book? I think the prime reason is because of the seiyuu work and rather elongated dialogues. Of course in this type of realism invoking anime, voice work you would see in Azumanga Diaoh or Love hina wouldn't work. But it also wouldn't hurt to read with a bit more excitementthan just reading the script. Not once did I feel any emotion in Kino's voice. The very first and the last time I felt Kino's emotion was from the last 3 minutes of the anime and that was her facial expression not her voice. Certainly there are side characters who emotionally engage themselves, but if everyone around them (especially Kino) are apathetic about people around them, it just is hard to establish an emotional connection.

The format of the story reminds me of AzumangaDaioh just without the comedy and the excitement. It's just event by event without much connection to each other.

It seems tome that every episode is meant to tell us something. For example episode IV: the land of adults, The makers clearly make a point that too mcuh rationality and sense of duty can be devastating: there is a need of emotion in peoples' lives. In this sense, each episode suceeds in getting its themes across.

clearly some reviewers would not agree with me, but I felt as though this huge fragmentation of thematic material resulted in "pointlessness." In a way this also has to do with the whole animation, music and all things that contributed to it. For example, the anime never makes it clear what thepoint of Kino journey is, and apparently Kino doesn't seem to know that either. But does every travellor have to know their purpose? may be not. but that in combination with apathy and fragmented theme just doesn't work. But then again that seems to be what the maker intended... It didn't work with me.

the best epipsodes in this anime was 5 and six and that when Kino fights. those episode were interesting because of two reasons: action and maniac King. Although Kino still is appathetic, this anime is better when there is something to get excited or get angry about. Hey here it is again: emotional connection makes anime better at least in my standards... And there is episode 13, which is the only episode you will find Kino caring about something.

to be honest, the producers were not all that concerned with music nor the animation. Both are just dreamy blob most of the time expect for the own designs. there are no music except a "Ding" that rings everycouple of minte just to keep us alarmed. However, the OP and ED are both very pleasant to listen to...

What can summarize this anime? It si apathy. No one in the anime seems to care about each other, and obviously is the the characters in the anime don't seem to care, I can't care much either. Although this anime has lot of thematic materials that could've been exploited to make something really interesting, it never does. May be its the whole "stay faithful to the novel thing"... I rather watch something more interesting though...

If you want something thoughtful I say dig on very insightful Haibane Renmei, perfectly balanced Honey and Clover, extremely intense Planet ES, again very insightful Kare Kano, and ever aggrevating Infinite Ryvius

"They say when one sees a bird in flight, they have the urge to go on a journey."

Perhaps that is the case, considering the ideal of going on a journey encompasses seeing new worlds, learning new ideals, experiencing life in a way that's reflective, engaging, and stimulating all at once. I once had a friend ask me if I would rather travel the world penniless and broke or be wealthy and remain in the same city all of my life, and I chose the former, because the idea of learning about new cultures, looking at the world from a different set of eyes, and living for at least a tiny bit of time within the styles, traditions, and perspectives of another intrigues me greatly.

Perhaps that is one of the reasons why Kino no Tabi ~the Beautiful World~ touched my heart in an intriguing, introspective, and enthralling way. Depicting the travels from the eyes of its two protagonists, this series is not one to be taken solely with a grain of salt--in fact, it is a series that will not only entertain you, but make you think about larger things in the world such as "why do people act in the ways that they do?" "what makes one culture different from another in their practices and values?" and "how can I look at the world through these other perspectives?", among many others.

Kino, along with her witty sidekick motorbike Hermes, undertake a series of adventures through the 13 episodes this series has to offer. This series invites the viewer to look into each of the worlds, taking a snapshot look at the people, their thoughts, traditions, flaws, values, and strength all within a traveler's eye. Just like looking through a magnifying glass, you see into each of these worlds and get an eye-opening of view of how these societies work. And while looking into this journey's course, you have the perfect blend of action/adventure, drama, subtle humor, and epic storytelling.

Animation and music are rather good for complementing the story and it's overall feel. The story and the characters are perhaps the best aspect of Kino no Tabi with regards to it's keen and original presentation of the events and persons it portrays. A brief series full of ideals to keep you mind engaged and thinking, I'd say it's a worthy series to add to any anime collection.

Kino no Tabi has it all: The pounding action, luscious animation, riveting epic storylines, elegant character development, and most of all the constant cliffhangers make it a constant struggle to tear your eyes away from this fast-paced anime.

...

Actually Kino no Tabi has none of those. What it does have is masterful understanding of anthropology and an uncanny ability to defy expectations. While not riveting material, Kino no Tabi's sheer intelligence and panache makes it very enjoyable.

With it's collection of short stories, Kino no Tabi dares to not tell the whole story, and it furthermore dares to have intelligent stories understood by its own intelligent characters, Kino and Hermes, a rare thing indeed. As a pair though, Kino and Hermes make odd main characters indeed. Since every culture they encounter is freakish by our standards, it falls on them to be the our proxies in being the outside observer. Yet they themselves are impossible to truly identify with because they're impossibly aloof, nonjudgemental, and lack standard emotional responses. This is made all the more odd by the fact that the actual direction of the anime is very much judgemental and strives to create the appropriate reactions in the viewing audience. This is in fact the very crux of the anime; the fulcrum shift that occurs from our judgements and emotional reactions based on our own societal mores emphasized by directorial manipulation, which is then sharply contrasted against Kino's nonjudgemental and rational view of the world, then further augmented by Hermes inquisitively view, untainted by humanity, which simultaneously questions the rationality of both the society on display and our own society.

Interestingly, One of Kino's principle qualities is her raw practicality, yet she is on a journey which is defined by whimsy. Also, Hermes is talking motorcycle. In spite of all that, both are eminently likable.

Yet, at the end of every story, it's difficult not to ponder the meaning of the story, as facets of human nature are revealed, often tragically. In the best traditions of science fiction, it indirectly raises disquieting questions about human nature and our own societies. Oftentimes, however, they're none to subtle about it by waxing philosophical in the show itself. For example, in the very last episode, it's very hard to miss the meaning of the constant bell tolling. Indeed, the title of the episode often gives the game away before the anime starts. Overall, the individual stories are almost uniformly excellent in their presentation of unique settings (though none are truly original) while being just self-referential enough to hold the overarching story together. There are minor problems is that minor characters will often break credibility in reactions to railroad the story along, but it's usually quite tolerable since the philosophy reigns supreme.

beautifully animated series, similar in style to jin-roh, i think, the cgi and the cell shading don't over-power each other nor the handdrawn animation.
The seiyuus did a wonderful job matching the characters' personalities. The dialog is meaninful and symbolic forcing the viewer to reflect on what's happening on screen and to some extent in the actual world and his or her own life. The characters are actually convey a lot of emotion and feelings without being emotional and overly expressive which makes for a powerful impact thanks to the seiyuus. The title theme and ending theme are very well suited to the overall feel of the anime.
One of the best developed stories I've seen in a while, eventhough the stories are presented as stand alone shorts, but there is a common thread that links each to the other very subtly. The best examples are the prophesy episode and the poet's episode, likewise, the begining of kino's journey from her town to the town she last visits.
The characters are one of the most memorable aspects of this series even the supporting ones. I found all to be well developed and each contributed to the story in their own way.

This anime belongs in any anime fans collection. One of the most enjoyable anime out there.

An odd little gem here we have here. I don't think I've ever seen an anime as chaotic and addictive as this one.
It's chaotic because it seems to mix a lot of different styles. There's plenty of drama and philosophical themes in here, but also some of the best action scenes I've seen. The episodes are mostly seperate stories, and some are completely predictable while others completely surprise you. In that sense though, despite being completely fantastical, the beautiful world of Kino's Travels feels more real than our own world sometimes does, and probably for that reason, it'll keep drawing you in.
The only notable flaw I can find in this anime is the bits and pieces that are missing from Kino's own story, but it doesn't make the series less enjoyable.

For 13 episodes, this anime covers alot of ground. About the travels of Kino and his talking mortorcycle across the world, staying at various city-states. With a bit of action and drama thrown in, the anime primarily explores human nature and philosophy.

Animaiton and Sound:
Animation is decent, with good fighting scenes. The music is mediocore and would deserve a lower score if it wasn't for the fact that it fits the undramatic mood of the protagonist.

Story:
While some of the stories are far-fetched or predictable, the point is that even if a bit extreme, they still have great depth and leaves room for the viewer to think for him or herself. Although I wouldn't have minded my backstory, they do include a fair bit into these basicly independent stories.

Characters:
The side characters are sometimes silly but still sympathetic, while Kino really shines in this anime with a personality that perfectly fits the "traveler" status. Not overely sentimenal like a missionary or totally aloof like a historian, Kino finds the perfect balance between his sentiments and judgement.

Value:
Definitely a must see for a good example of how 1-episode stories and "smart" animes should be like.

Enjoyment:
I personally liked this anime alot because of the story telling. I'm looking forward to reading the ~100p novel it is based on.

I consider this a very 'smart' anime. You cannot watch it without focusing on the dialogue and everything that happens on the screen. There is probably a lot of symbolism hidden beneath all the dialogue, but even without relying heavily on deciphering all the mysteries, this anime is able to touch any viewer because it is about humans and humanity.

I don't wish to go about trying to analyze every country Kino visited and what it could mean about humanity. All I can say is that Kino no Tabi really goes straight to the heart. It does not rely on cheap special effects, or particularly well-timed catchy soundtracks. Instead, the subject matter itself is great. If you love to question, if you would like to laugh and cry at the multifacets of humanity, then watch this.

I wanted to see this anime for quite some time, cose I really enjoy animes that handle stories about human nature, and I've hurd so many good reviews about it... but I have to say I was completly dissapointed when I watched it.

Ok, I know what most of you are gonna say, that I'm shallow, stupid and narrow minded for not seeing the beauthy within this anime, and that I should go back to Gundam... first of all, if you'll look at my rating list you'll see my real preferences... second well maybe I didn't quite get the message of the show, aldough I think I understood all the messages of the little episodic, cryptic and symbolic stories, but with my mind and not my hearth... even dough I understood many of them, aldough some were pushed beyond the border of reason into an alegoric talle that somethimes seemed just stupid and extremlly boring (yes I don't think this anime is as smart as most try to say it is), I just couldn't come to like the anime, it just was to dull, unemotional and crazzy...

The characters were interesting? maybe, not real at all, but they did depict some human ideas, they were the incarnation of the idea, but somehow they seemed hollow, just like a shell that has no soul, that can't hide anything beneath it's surface, they didn't hide any feelings.

It wasn't a total loss, I did enjoy the episode with the Prophecy and the episode where Kino saves the three guys from starvation.

So the animation was horrible, probably the worse I ever seen. You can't blame me for giving it a low grade...

Blame me, call me anything you want, but I just can't watch a movie that oly teaches without giving back a few laughs, tears or any other sentiments.. that's why I skip so many classes at College.

After watching this anime, you feel like you have just sat through an entire semester's worth of a philosophy and human psychology course... and actually enjoyed the lectures! The tales of each village woven around metaphors ranging from modes of government to the savagry of human nature are so beautifully written that you tend to forget about Kino as a main character or Hermes as the wise-cracking sidekick. Sure you want to know more about how Kino came about... but more often than naught, you are drawn into the tales of the countries and the morals and values shown as either advantageous or unfortunate.

This is one of those anime that you can sit down and show to your significant other (boyfriend/girlfriend), and not feel embarassed to show them. This is what you would call a great "baptism" title to show to someone to introduce them into the world of anime. Highly recommended!
