| Of the same genre of "Ghost in the Shell" with mecha, cyber bodies, "diving" into computers, and one of the main characters, Alissa, with her short hair, cyber body, and stoic personality, reminds me of the Major from "Ghost in the Shell". However, this anime is nowhere even close to being as good as GitS.
The animation is sub-par, even for a 1999 anime. Characters emotions are not shown very well in the faces and bodies, and the battle mecha seem very unrealistic in their movements and damage. The animation when they are "within" the computer is also sub-par and is very drab and boring.
The soundtrack is also sub-par; there is no background music to speak of, the ending song is pretty bad, and the voice acting is stiff and unconvincing, especially with the villian, Jean Luc. See: generic "evil laugh" upon seeing his mecha for the first time.
The story was full of plot-holes and little background information. Why was Angel Arms created? When? How did these characters come to join it? How was the leader, Takakura, chosen? Why did the villians indiscriminately bomb the city? And many other questions.
Also, the entire story focuses on the protection of Hassan from terrorists, and supposedly the police and army is helping out, but we never see them besides a couple useless helicopters. The "arch villian" also only makes a brief appearence at the end, and really doesn't do anything; the story is left very open as to whether he is caught or not.
The characters were all pretty one-dimensional, lacked background and development, and were generally annoying. The idiotic police commisioner was getting knocked unconcious by the Angel Arms every 5 minutes but still helped them for some reason. Hassan is the Boss of a smuggling ring for deadly weapons, but the story attempts to portray him as "not so bad"; the Angel Arms even save him and let him wander around free even though he tried to kill them the day before.
The relationship between Alissa and her ex-boyfriend was also unrealistic and cliche, and though it was probably the biggest part of the storyline, I found myself bored by the whole ending scene with her and him in the computer.
Every one of the Angel Arms is also very stereotypical: the computer geek, the weak one, the athletic one, the idealistic leader, etc. None of their backgrounds are explained, and even now, 30 minutes after watching the movie, I have forgotten all of their names.
This anime has little value; I will never rewatch it, I wouldn't reccomend it to anyone, and there are much better anime of its genre (i.e. Ghost in the Shell).
The bland animation, lack of exciting sound, boring story, and two dimensional characters combined to make this a pretty non-enjoyable experience.

| Although I thoughrouhly enjoyed this anime it did have it's downsides, such as unoriginal sound effects, predictable characters, and average animation
But because publishing year was 1999
I guess i can let it all slide. I did however have awesome action sequences.

| High expectations that didn't even come close to what I was hoping. If you're a Shirow fan then you are bound to check it out anyways, like most of us that did see this. Not entirely a waste of time but you won't be missing much if you never get to see this. In the end I think Gundress is just left over pieces from other Shirow works that was heaped together and roughly put out there.

| For an anime made in 1999, the drawings and the animation are really bad. It look like a '80 anime. Even Appleseed and Black Magic M-66 were visually better.
The best element of this movie is the music and the sound. They were not bad but sometime annoying.
The story is totally stupid and unoriginal. This anime is a shame for Masamune Shirow.
No character development, what is this ?
What was the utility to create so much character in a 82min movie.
The director was really ambitious but he failed. Even the fact that it's a 82min movie is a shame because Ghost in the Shell is a 82min movie too. An insult for the audiauce !

| If your expecting to get another one of Shiro's hits like Ghost in the Shell, sory to tell you this but you wont be finding it here.
very underbudget animation that seems much older then it actually is, sub-par sound, and useless characters that have little to no development couple with a pointless story that makes yourself ask "is this a joke?"
If your like me and thought the box looked cool and went on faith in Masamune Shiro's reputation, try to hold back on watching this. you wont like it.
