| In a quick sum, i really enjoyed this anime, but the questions remaining kept bugging me, so i couldn't fully focus on what was happening.
What to say about haibane renmei...
Basically its a deep story about friendships (not to be confused with love), and it delivers well at this.
However i am a very technical person, i like to know how and why things are.
In this area, haibane renmei delivers little to no explanations of such, but rather focuses more on the story.
I'd definately recommend, but not a first-time viewer.

| I decided to give Haibane Renmei a shot when I read the plot.
First off the series starts off with a big event then for a few episodes nothing too interesting happens. Just the main character adjusting to life there.
When the story picks up it gets alot more interesting. But the plot alone carries this series, you want to find out where are they, what are the Haibane etc.
Most of the characters are uninteresting and bland. There are really about 3 interesting characters. The animation can be very good or mediocre.
If you like deep mysteries and exploring the human mind and thoughts then give it a shot. Alot of questions are unanswered though. Alot.

| Haibane Renmei, where to start! I heard a lot about this anime but never really got around to watching it until recently, and man am I kicking myself for not getting to it sooner! I didn't know what to expect from it at first; was it going to be like Azumanga Daioh with girls dawning wings and halos instead of schoolbooks and uniforms? Or will it be like Kino's Journey that is heavy on philosophy? It actually incorporates the best of both of these animes creating an adorable and very likable cast as well offering some different outlooks on life. It's a beautifully woven poetry in the form of anime that will sweep you off your feet.
The story stars a young girl named Rakka who was born as a haibane. Haibane are angel like beings that used to have lives before as normal human beings, but for reasons unknown, are reborn as haibane fully developed and matured. Rakka doesn't remember anything about her past life, yet she is homesick and often gets lonely. Eventually she gets over it, adjusts to her new life, and makes lots of wonderful and nice friends.
Like most anime, the beginning was pretty slow. Most of the first couple episodes went through its "getting to know the characters" parts which was executed well in the form of the slice of life genre. It was pretty slow, but watching Rakka make new friends and just living life was absolutely rewarding to watch. Rakka goes from being the shy and apologetic outsider to becoming one of the sweetest girls around town that everyone loves to talk to. Though there are times when things feel a little too bright, but it's a nice change of pace from all the hardcore emo stuff that anime is famed for.
By midpoint, a plot twist just hammers its way into the story that impacts the lives of all the haibane, specifically Rakka. The world that Rakka lives in is very sensitive to the emotions of haibane; in fact, their laws are centered around their feelings! Live like a saint, and you will live a free life, but show despair with no self hope, and you'll simply disappear...literally. There are a surprising amount of morals and themes that Haibane Renmei covers, and it does an excellent job of mixing it all together to feel like one free flowing story. The tone gets surprisingly dark deep into the series, but it doesn't deviate too far away from its charming light hearted moments.
Haibane Renmei is just a great watch no matter how you look at it. It presents to the viewers a box full of themes and morals that are all strung together beautifully into one product, and the development of Rakka's character over the course of the show was consistently steady and satisfying to watch. Its only flaw is that it may get a little too happy at times for its own good, but that is only a very minor problem to what is a must see anime.

| Loved this anime. It gets you to think about the emotional psyche of people, how everyone need someone to support them, to be kind to them, to lift them up when they are down. It explores relationships that transcends the traditional love-boy-girl stories you know about.
The plot and the wings and the halo also creates a feeling as to where people come from and where they go.
Its a very interesting anime that will make feel good for sure.

| Animation: overall anime was detailed, unfortunatelly, characters' faces lacked facial curves. If this feature would have had been added, the animation would have had 10 mark score. Unfortunetally, it didn't.
Sound: there was nothing good or bad about the sound. Maybe because of the story, there could not be any of good sound effects incorporated into the story, but I believe that for this type of anime, a sound could have had been more subtile, such as the such as depiction of people in the background or water flow more lively.
Story: the flow of the events was well designed. Story had no flows, and the ending episodes were outstandingly designed that created the emotional response from the viewer. I believe the story worth 10.
Character: character's looked realistically, because they incorporated both good and bad features of each individual. Moreover every person had his/her own motives.
Value: I believe it was a fine anime. I'd like to keep it on my shell just in case I would like to rewatch it, but probably I would not want to watch it again.
Enjoynment: I missed a bit of more action in this anime, but still it was an enjoyable anime to watch.

| Haibane Renmei, an anime which had been on my to-watch list for quite some time because of its really high ranking.
Starting out as a very slow-paced anime, I was thinking that Haibane Renmei would be a drag and bore, but there had to be a reason why it is SoOoO Highly Rated, & Thus, I Continued on, only to be surprised & Glad that I have been able to watch this Beautiful Gem...
Animation is Beautiful for a 2002 production, Sceneries are well done, & Character designs are great. No Complaints at all, and Thumbs up for the Beautiful Animation. =)
Sounds were slow and soothing. Very rarely, an instrumental music is used as an opening theme, & the ending theme was pretty nice. I can't say that I absolutely loved it, but the music was pretty well done, in my opinion, & the seiyuus did a Really Great Job, especially when they were showing the pain and emotions. No Complaints here either. x)
Story? Well, Haibane Renmei started out slow. & for those who stop watching an anime after the first few episodes which seems like a bore, well, those kind of people are the kind that will have a very hard time to find very good animes. But anyway, Haibane Renmei started out slow-paced and like daily life kind of situation, explaining what is happening around and the customs and traditions of this strange place. & also, getting to know the other characters and developing them... Seemingly boring at first, but this build-up was necessary for the True Value of Haibane Renmei...
Many Characters were introduced and Many of them were developed to some extent (well, you can't really do much with only 13 episodes), and more development are seen in the two main characters as their characters and past were explored and revealed.
Like i said, it started out a bit boring, but i realised the build-up was necessary, because despite the first 5 episodes being a bit of a drag, i had shed a few tears when they had lost a friend in the sixth episode. I could feel the pain and sadness, & this marked the beginning of the Reason why Haibane Renmei is SoOoO Highly Rated...
Haibane Renmei was meant to be the kind of anime where there are a lot of questions, but very few answers. & Throughout the story, i don't know how to explain this, but they had made and planned the story of Haibane Renmei sooo well, and used some of these weird customs and traditions to their advantage to make Haibane Renmei Unique, & in the last few episodes, the traditions of the festival they were celebrating & the way they had use colours to express their emotions in silence, Just Totally Left a Beautiful Feeling Bubbling inside me... I was touched... A LOT... Such Beautiful Emotions & Gestures...
As Haibane Renmei ended, Conflicts were solved, & even the disappearance of another friend had seemed beautiful, as they had expected it and lived their lives to the fullest, not regretting or crying for anything as they would have...
I don't exactly know how to explain these emotions, but all i can say is that Haibane Renmei is a Gem, a Story as Beautiful as its Animation, going deep inside the deepest darkest emotions, but then also, healing and forgiving those emotions with hope and trust.
Haibane Renmei is simply Beautiful...
If you Enjoy Slow-paced philosophical and meaningful animes, Haibane Renmei might just be the kind of anime that you have been looking for ALL This time, As There are LOTS of Meaningfulness explored...
However, if you're the kind that needs action and excitement in everything that you're watching. Just Stay away from this, cause you won't be able to appreciate the Slow Beauty of Haibane Renmei...

| Haibane Renmei is very special.
Haibane Renmei explores the human soul. Actually, it does better than simply explore the human soul - it makes you feel the human soul, and what it feels like to be human, with all its happiness and trial. That's what makes Haibane Renmei special.
Haibane Renmei is also very very original. Compares to Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutzu in terms of originality, IMHO (this is high praise, and in case you haven't seen Suzumiya, GO SEE IT NOW). The issues explored in Haibane Renmei isn't what makes it original. It's how it does it - through a series of metaphors that weave a beautiful story when looked at as a whole.
Just like life, Haibane Renmei is full of questions, and offers only a few answers.
One thing that did catch me off guard was how quickly the story shifted its focus from Rakka, once she was cured of her disease, to Reki. I thought there was more that could've been done with Rakka's character - enough to last the entire 13 episodes. I didn't much mind though. Reki's character is by far more noble and tragic. In my mind, the ending came hurriedly. There was more that could be explored in Reki's character, I believe. But nonetheless, the change of pace was welcome - Haibane Renmei started a bit slowly than needed, I think. But regardless, both Rakka and Reki were very meaningful and loveable characters, and this is what makes Haibane Renmei such a treat to watch.
All in all, Haibane Renmei is one of those very select few animes that makes the anime genre worthwhile.
Highly recommended.
PS: question for those who have finished watching. The Haibane who fail to fly away - do they become the Haibane Renmei? Those who fail to fly live apart from both humans and lead a peaceful, long life; and the Haibane Renmei certainly fit this description.

| Breathtaking. I entered Haibane Renmei with expectations for a decent, above average anime; it completely swept me off my feet. There are so many layers to this anime it's incredible. Not only is Haibane Renmei good, however, its originality is astounding, which makes this emotional, melancholic story all the more incredible.
While many complain about the animation in Haibane Renmei, I must say this is one of the most enjoyable parts of it. There are so many metaphorical undertones and shadows that have a large emotional impact because of this style of animation; I don't think it could have been changed and still acheived the same effect. The scenery and ambience are absolutely gorgeous, at times bearing some semblance to Beyond the Clouds as far as quality and style are concerned. It carries a mystical, dreamlike eloquence that fluidly submerses you into the world and really breathes life into the entire series. In many ways I'm at a loss for words; its style is very unique and perfectly fits Haibane Renmei.
The most beautiful and poignant aspect of Haibane Renmei, however, is its soundtrack. In most series, even if I thoroughly enjoy the opening theme, I tend to skip past it after a few times through. The total opposite occured here -- I found myself listening to the opening song twice through with each episode. Free Bird is such a touching, melodic piece that beautifully captures the essence of the series. In fact, aside from two tracks (which are decent at very, very worst), the entirety of Haibane Renmei is literally smothered with such moving, emotionally charged songs. Many times I found myself having to backtrack a few scenes due to daydreaming while listening to the music and missing the actual series. Of all the series I have watched over the past six years, I must say Haibane Renmei possesses the best soundtrack I have yet to come across. Not to mention we have a fabulous Seiyuu to accompany the musical score, if any series acheived perfection in its sound rating it would be this one.
At its core, Haibane Renmei is an allegory. Though almost entirely structured around metaphors, not once does Haibane lose itself to meaningless philosophical banter. As the series progresses, it builds a long string of intriguing and fascinating questions that weave themselves intricately into the exploration of the human soul. The pacing of Haibane is at times very slow and peaceful (and almost somewhat boring), but similarly does not refrain from generating passion and angst during the right moments. Despite being a somewhat cold soul when it comes to these sorts of topics, Haibane, on multiple occasions, caused my eyes to water -- especially toward the end. Many might complain that Haibane concludes with many plot holes, I think that this was done intentionally. Haibane evokes a deep level of emotion from the viewer, and appears to strive to have that emotion subjectively examined by each individual. Just as Plato does not provide an answer to whether or not the shadows on the wall are more real than the people themselves, neither does Haibane offer any explanations to its own questions -- their elegance and meaning are left for the viewer to decipher.
Although the supporting caste could have been improved somewhat, the two main characters, Rakka and Reki, truly drive the emotional machine behind Haibane. I felt an incredible sense of attachment to Rakka especially, as her pain and suffering are explored very well. From the very first episode I was touched, as the scene where she first acquires her wings is amazingly well done. Invariably, the tracing of her poignant story drives Haibane's success, and emphasizes the depth of the human experience the writers were trying to explore. Because of this, she serves as an outstanding foil to Reki. I felt that Reki's past could have been approached a bit differently, though, and don't find it to be quite as emotionally charged as Rakka's as some other reviewers have commented. Regardless, she still possesses an incredible amount of depth and layering and I was not disappointed. As Haibane progresses, the relationship between these two girls takes an amazing road that ended with a brilliant climax -- I couldn't ask for me.
All in all, I have nothing but glowing recommendations for Haibane Renmei. Keep in mind that the pacing is overall slow, so if you're looking for excitement or action this is the wrong place to turn. If you seek an emotional, intellectual masterpiece, however, then look no further. Series like this are the sole reason why I watch anime.
Highly recommended.

| This was not what I was expecting. I couldn't say if it was better or worse than I was expecting, just... that it was different.
I will not divulge anything even potentially spoiling here, because it was my curiosity that kept me pushing through this series. Of course, in that respect, I have to say, this anime doesn't exactly end up telling you anywhere near as many answers as you have questions, and yet, you are left with a pretty good feeling in the end.
Why watch this anime? To feel. This anime brought tears to my eyes more than once, and I could hardly define why. I was surprisingly moved many times, and for that I am thankful. I would definitely advise watching it in one sitting if possible, because the episodes have poor endings. They either end abruptly, or just leave you with a lackluster feeling, which as any anime addict will tell you means you need to watch more. Thankfully, the final episode gives you something to go away with, so if you can watch the series to the end in one go, you'll get a bit of the satisfaction we all look for when finishing an anime. But it's the characters, not the story, and the secrets of the world, that will keep you coming back for more.
It could have been done better, yes. Personally, I prefer when all secrets are given out before an anime concludes, and I definitely spent some time after I finished this scouring the internet trying to find out what Haibane are, and what was untold, only to find that the author never really said, which was disappointing. Still, it is worth a watch.

| This series was an overall pleasant experience. Similar to Evangelion in its in depth character analysis and latent dark themes, but this Anime leaves a *good* taste in your mouth by the end.
In particular, I wouldn't categorize this Anime as dark, simply because nothing is excessive, and each character finds his/her own resolution by the end of the story.

| "Where am I? I'm falling from the sky. Strange. Why am I not afraid? Are you worried about me? I wonder what is this place... Fluffy and warm, but I'm anxious inside. I'm not afraid, but my heart is cold. That's impossible for you, but thank you."
After watching the very first minute of the show I've realized that this is that kind of show I'm watching anime for. When an anime starts as a girl falling from the sky is talking with a crow, while a wonderful melancholical piano tune is playing I can easily tell, that it's going to be something I've never seen before. I was right. Not only Haibane Renmei is a wonderful multi-layered tale, but it has a big and very well characterized cast of characters. What's quite in contrary with other multi-layer plot driven animes, like Serial Experiments Lain or Kino no Tabi.
I learned that this show is a work of ABe (the original creator of Serial Experiments Lain) only after I've finished watching it. Yet even though unknowingly, I was still comparing this anime to Serial Experiments Lain and Kino no Tabi all the while I was watching it. Shows like these make me proud to be a true blood otaku. While superficially the show is more similar to Kino no Tabi, following a light, gentle, but kind of mysterious path, its second layer and original idea are quite dark, picking one of the most mysterious segments of human lifes. Some fan speculations about the show, which are neglected to be false by ABe, could prove this show being not suitable for younger audiences. On the other hand, you can finish this show without picking up anything at all, that's it if you'll be looking at the superficial layer only.
If you've loved shows like Kino no Tabi, Serial Experiments Lain, Neon Genesis Evangelion, finally, even, Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou, this is the show you are waiting for. It's nearly a guarantee you'll like it. On the other hand, if you are content with the level of the shows like Naruto, Bleach or Inuyasha and deem Serial Experiments Lain as a nonesense, then better stay away from this anime as far as you can.

| One thing's for sure, not everyone will appreciate this incredible anime. It has everything that a good classic literature needs to live forever in humanity, too bad not everyone will agree with this. It shows us how beutiful and interasting normal life can be without slacking off and not doing what your sopposed to. I think everyone can relate to this. Anyway heres my review for today:
ANIMATION: Sleek, clear and stylish. Very expected from the creator of Lain. Here they change the style of animation when theres an action scene (like in hunter x hunter and Arjuna) wich gives it a new feel to it. The scenary is really well done to and expresses that calmness that the series wants to proyect.
SOUND: Soothing, refreshing and heart warming. This is the kind of music that you'd just like to sit down and chill. One thing that this series has given me is a way to relax after a hard day in med school.
STORY: The story basicly is about Raka turning into a full fledged Haibane and at the same time resolve many problems that we as human beings have to fase many time in life. You could say that its us but through the eyes of a innocent little girl. You get to know almost all of the characters in the series and see how they face there worst stigmas of life. This is something this anime does really well.
VALUE: Priceless!!!if your the kind of person that like to make the most out of life this anime may show you ways that you've never even imagend before! Do yourself a favor and watch this one, its a true peice of art.

| haibane renmei is just simply amazing. though i can't say its been the most enjoyable anime i've seen as of late, it certainly stands above the crowd.
though i can't say its for everyone. its for thinkers, and people who enjoy slice of life genres. i say this because the anime starts VERY slow. i can honestly say i was a bit bored at times, but i do strictly mean only 'a bit'.
the things that stand out is the animation and the sound. by animation, i refer to the amazing backgrounds and artwork. the music is where this anime is truly outstanding. i can honestly say that i was downright hooked to many of the strange yet addicting instrumental themes from the opening to the end.
the character and story i'd deem as far above average. because i've just watched honey and clover, however, i cannot say that it is superior, in that, although it touches the human emotion, it only skims it. this, however, is sometimes a good thing, as some people don't like overdramatic elements. haibane renmei presents an interesting journey in a fashion that isn't 'over the top'.
i'll finish with the controversial interpretation: and thats that after you've finished, you'll probably still be a bit confused. and thats because, as i found out recently, you're SUPPOSED to. the anime's story is by no means linear, and has many multiple interpretations. this, i think, is renmei's main weapon, in making it an absolutely GREAT anime
although i must admit, i do agree the anime's not perfect. at times, i wish it was a bit longer or developed. its not that the anime is lacking anything; its just that i wished for maybe something a little different. but maybe its because i recently saw honey and clover
not at all do i regret watching Haibane Renmei, and its certainly recommended, especially for its amazing music and story.

| Overall? This anime does what it set out to do. Tell a story through the eyes of a young girl figuring out her new world.
You could relate this to telling a story through babies eyes, though babies don't speak. So they set it as a young girl who can iterate what she is thinking.
For me this anime sort of plays on the death issue. Not enough to get you really sad, but enough to show you how precious life is and how much we should look around and appreciate the things we have, because who knows how long we will be here.
My biggest flaw with this anime is that the story seemed to drag in a few places and then it tried to speed and finish everything up within the last 2 or 3 episodes. I think if there was more conflict or a love interest they could have drawn it out to 26 episodes. They could have really taken their time to fully explain everything and everyones history and background.
Perhaps that is just my opinion though. I just would have liked to get to know everyone a bit more.

| Haibane Renmei is an anime that I picked up by chance after my brother saw it in an AMV. At first I thought that it would be boring and decided that I would watch it if I ran out of other stuff to watch. However, after seeing how high a score that it had, I decided to make it my next series to view. This series certainly does deserve a high score. From the first episode I was hooked and couldn't wait to watch the next. As I got closer to the end of the series, I began to form my own opinion of where I wanted the anime to go and how I wanted it to end. I was dissapointed to find that it took a different route from the one I was hoping. This route left me feeling somewhat unfulfilled and with many unanswered questions. However, those questions were more for side plots than the main plot, so it wasn't that bad. Overall, while this anime is not perfect, it does have an intriguing plot and is a fun feel good anime to watch at least once.

| Well i dont know what went wrong here, I thought i was going to like this show after seeing the first episode, but I just didnt, of course it dosnt help that Im trying to watch 5 genres of anime at the same time right now
the show seemed to drag on and on like a gratefull dead concert, that is to say, you hear a lot about the thing and that its good stuff and all, but when you actually get down to experienceing the deal, you feal robbed of your time and money (or in this case gbs)
I dont think the show was terrible by any standards, its just that it was soo lack luster...
ahem
ANIMATION: I actually thought that the animation was one of the only redeeming qualities of the show, there was a lot of good detail work done in the background as welll as on the characters themselves, however, I didnt give this a 10 because the characters were all kinda average and at first I had some difficulty discerning one from the next (i suck at remembering faces)
SOUND: I thought the sound wasnt too shabby either, there were some nice peacefull sounding tracks and some nice string pieces, but over all, you cant get by in an anime with only that, you also need some pieces that get your blood pumping, (and this show could have really used some breaks to the tedious, oh-so-peacefull mood)
STORY: Well I would consider the first 9 or so episodes just to be a setup for the last three, becaue untill the last three episodes, not a whole hell of a lot happens, here, allow me to summarise the first 9 episodes in 4 sentances: The main characters are introduced and how they live is vaguely outlined. Some minor (verrrry minor) conflicts are introduced. Someone leaves the town, which causes what will pass for mass turmoil (in this show anyway). the concept of sin-bound is introduced/explained.
CHARACTER: bleah XP
and the rest isnt worth wasteing time to type, (nore was that last bit I suppose)
Yet when I think about this anime, I still get the strange fealing that I liked watching it even though I know I didnt.... so yeah, thats wierd

| This is one of those anime series that makes you proud to be an anime fan!
It has this beautful slowed paced, character driven storyline that will have you enthralled and captivated from the moment the OP credits end.
It's the kind of anime that I would call serene and peaceful whilst you're watching it and then when it's over it opens a Pandora's box full of questions and theories.
If you want to watch something beautiful, but at the same time something that will leave you pondering for days after, then I can't think of anything better to recommend ^__^

| Rarely have I seen the first episodes of an anime and couldnt let it off my mind the next day. The beautiful music was responsible for this.
This feature is a must watch for all fans of animation. Perhaps it rivals the classic Ghibili movies in pace and direction and is on par with some of them. If I wasnt familiar with animes I'd be content to watch some Ghibili movies and this. Though as some reviewers mentioned the visuals are blurry sometimes. First I've watched it on a PC monitor from KAA rip. Visually it is stunning, motion suffers though. Ghibili has the edge in motion. Then I bought the DVD boxset by Geneon that is of high quality and the English dub is of the best I've heard.
Though action scenes are almost non-existant the characters are convincing and the direction of the best I've seen in 13 ep format animation.
The music too is of the best I've heard. Truly soothing and magical.
Initially I was hesitant too in watching it after reading the synopsis, but after the first episode I knew what to expect. A symbolic journey to Christianity from Abe's perspective, like I havent seen before. With this the Japanese prove that they can make anime about Christianity too, instead of the usual parodies that receive attention mostly.
The animation resembles Studio Ghibili in direction and quality but it brings about some angsty atmosphere in some moments, unlike Ghibili.
The characters are excellent, though the anime doesnt focus only in one character. All of them are convincing for the screen time they get.
Rakka (Sora Naegino in Kaleido Star,so expect a similar character, though with more seriousness this time) yet again impressive, instantly wins the viewers sympathy. Perhaps the voice actress' best anime performance.
Riki is another main character and in the last episode she gives an impressive performance too.
All the other characters have good performances and are likeable. In fact there's no character you'll dislike here. They act very normally and never over-excessively.
Some claim that you have to see Maison Ikkoku anime to be considered a true anime fan. I havent seen that yet (only read the manga) but in my opinion watching this and some Ghibili is enough if you dont have better things to do.
Most of the reviews here speak the truth. This is a masterpiece.
Yoshitoshi Abe mentions in an interview that he leaves to the viewers to understand this anime and form their personal opinion from their own experience. So any interpretation is welcome. I read also the Haibane Renmei doujinshi that were very original and funny. Also the Haibane Artbooks are very good. Perhaps the most personal of Yoshitoshi Abe's animes. Though not as dark as Lain or Texhnolyze and neither as funny as Niea_7, it is perhaps the most magical of the 4.

| I don't have much to complain about this anime because its almost perfect.
The animation kept its standard throughout the whole anime. Its really one of the most consistent I've ever seen. The background music was fairly good as well and the OP and ED suits the atmosphere and mood of the story really well. The story itself was also fantastic because of its originality and great plot.It wasn't all that fast-paced,but the tempo was good enough to keep my eyes fixed on the screen.Plus, the story was a perfect blend of fantasy and mystery with a fine touch of drama. It was perfect for my taste and also to all the anime fans out there who's also into these sort if genres.Character developement wasn't the best I've ever seen, except for a few main characters like Reki and Rakka. But it was pretty satisfying considering the fact that it has only 13 episodes.
Overall,it was a very enjoyable watch and has re-watching values. The ending was very well done even though it can be considered bittersweet for some fans.I highly recommend this to all anime fans because it really deserves all the fanbase it has.
