(Lunaranime & Miyu-Kenji, Solar & Genbu fansubs)

This title reminded me a lot of "Someday's Dreamers" anime. The difference is that I found "Piano" overall much better in direction and characters, though it couldnt avoid some melodrama here and there, but fortunately without crossing the line.

I found the first couple of episodes boring and was afraid this would turn like "Kokoro Library". After the third episode the anime takes the viewer in its own unique pace and in the end I was left satisfied. I dont know about rewatchability, but I could rewatch it in a few months if any better choices of films dont fall into my hands.

The anime isnt strictly musical like other similar anime titles (eg Gauche the Cellist, Interstellar 5555 or Key the Metal Idol). It focuses more on the central character Miyu and the various personal problems she faces, the piano lessons being some of them. This is an anime aimed at teenagers and the relation between Miyu and her piano teacher had a lot in common with that of Yume and her tutor in "Someday's Dreamers". Even the tutors of both animes looked the same!

For my taste this is how slice of life animes should be like, without getting boring. From all slice of life titles this is perhaps the most realistic. No sci-fi setting like in "Yokohama Shopping Log" , no romance as in "Honey and Clover", no artsy direction as in "Windy Tales" or magic as in "Someday's Dreamers", no comedy as in "NieA_7". Perhaps the closest anime would be the first part of every episode of "Figure 17". And I liked "Figure 17" mainly for that.

10 episodes were a perfect number for the anime's length. The direction was as good as possible and cliched characters were missing for the most part. Of course characters could be much better but I'm asking too much for an anime of this type.

Each character was unique, even the secondary ones. Few animes have such good characters. Even the cat Miyu had was very realistic. Miyus internal conflict about her future is satisfyingly portrayed and the ending is the most fitting the producers could have come up with.

Animation wasnt anything to be remembered. But some character expressions were good. Fortunately characters with blue, green and white hair are missing.

Sound consisted mainly of a few piano tunes but they werent connected with the anime, as in "Gauche the Cellist" and were just randomly heard. OP and ED werent that good and worth listening once or twice. For good music there are "Haibane Renmei" and "Someday's Dreamers" and "Key the Metal Idol".

As I said mainly the characters make this title memorable.

Watch this title if you like slice of life animes. Not recommended if you're not in the right mood. If by episode 4 you dont beginn like this title, better stop watching.

I'd recommend watching it once since it belongs to the type of animes I like.

Lets hope the movie "Piano no Mori" will push the premise further than this series.

Piano, small enough for a trio, but not spectular enough for a full symphony.

I'm a sucker for quiet and introverted anime with lots of thought put into it. Long time musician myself, I went into it thinking this would be an anime that has a lot to do with music and that I would be able to find something that i might be able to relate to, but it turns out that music really have nothing to do with the plot of this anime. In fact you could've put writing, poetry, or anything that allows one to express oneself would've worked.

But that is not the main flaw of this anime. This clearly lacks plot and characters who are interesting; this directly leads to loss of interest and, undoubtly, patience. This anime doesn't really have any solid plot. Events happen and characters react to it. at the end they attempt to put some plot that will lead to the finish but even that is a slight miss.

The characters I thought were rather... dull. Shirakawa-sensei obviously has problems and Miu is just a girl who lacks self-confidence in a tremendous amount. Their background and development would've been nice but there isn't much. I liked some of the side characters like Akiko and Yuki-chan, but they are not really a big part of this anime.

Even thought this anime lacks plot and characters, I think this anime has certain charms that work on some people. This surely is a nice change of pace anime. If you are tired and would like to rest with a couple episodes of quiet anime this anime will do perfectly. even if you are just looking for someting nice to watch, this will do also.

Having said that this anime is pleasant to watch with its clean, but not outstanding animation, and som nice piano pieces. Music is nice but they are all played in bits and pieces. I would've liked to have seen 5 minutes scene where music have a bigger role in this anime, but you won't get anything like that.

this anime can be charming one if you in the mood for it. But for many I do have a feeling this anime would be too slow. If you are a very patient anime watcher you might be able to get through it.

Being a long time piano performer /player myself, I went into this anime knowing nothing, but feeling that perhaps it'll have some nice message that I can relate to.

But no... i was mistaken. Despite the music being quite enjoyable at times, I found the story line to be too eventless. I guess anime isn't meant to be something like this with no drive to move it on. Save it for the movies where it isn't drawn out as much and you have a set time to express your emotions.

What I'm referring to is the pace. It lingers on the few notes that it plays, and hopes to resonate some chord in your body... but no doesn't really. Good try, but move condense it into a short OVA series.

Music is okay... nothing too impressive. I guess what's worse is that it doesn't really serve to heighten any emotion. When a piece is performed or when it serves as background music to a scene, it is to elevate and convey a feeling to the listener. I just felt it was out of place. Nevertheless, interesting tunes.

Short and sweet would be nice for an aesthetic piece like this.

I have to agree with Elemento’s review: “This is not an anime for everyone…..

This is a slice of life story about a young girl who plays the piano….. that’s it. It’s not a story about how she becomes the pilot of a giant fighting robot, or how she gets some magical powers that let her fight evil. I still found the show to be very enjoyable. I also liked watching Miu at the age when she is changing from a young girl to a young woman. She learns about life from her mother, has a crush on a boy, works through trouble with her friend, and has to decide if she wants to continue playing the piano.

I don’t think it’s fair to knock this anime for being “slow or “plain when that’s was it was intended to be. It’s like saying Love Hina would be a good anime if it wasn’t a harem setting.

Piano sound-wise lives up to its name, but story-wsie does not.

This is just an average anime, nothing too special, in fact I was mostly bored for the duration of it, nothing much happened, this is just a slice of life, a boring one at that. Okay, it may not be boring for real life, but for an anime, it is, and it’s also poorly represented. Half the time, I find myself daydreaming during the anime, not many have made me do that before.

I was really looking forward to this, really, because I love the piano, the sound of it, and I love music related anime, but this did not turn out to be anything more than average.

The animation was great, but nothing I haven’t seen before.

The sound was great, quite innovative at times, it’s one of the first time I have heard music playing in a music store (one that matches as well), also some background sound and tracks were great, but seriously, for an anime about a piano, though it doesn’t have to be about a piano, because it IS about a piano in this case, they could have made a bit more use of it.

The characters in this were really quite ordinary, maybe apart from the girls’ hair, nothing else was great, they didn’t act that great, the story didn’t help a bit either.

Didn’t really enjoy this, you probably won’t either, just to say that the animenfo picture of this had me fooled, it doesn’t give a fair representation of this anime, it was rather dream like, which this anime isn’t.

This just had ORDINARY written all over it, I loved short animes, but this though short, was still far too long, nothing much happened, anyone could fit the thing into a movie less than 1:30 long.

Piano, for me, was refreshing. Absolutely nothing about it was spectacular in the least. Some people may think this makes it boring, but I see it otherwise. The animation and music were good. The story was average with nothing all that gripping. It portrayed normal life. The characters, then, for the story, were perfect. No one had any kind of over the top personality that would have made the plot seem tainted. The only thing that bothered me was Miu's complete lack of self confidence.

This anime is amazingly plain. Simply put, the story actually goes somewhere without the lumps and bumps that make other anime that much more fun to watch. It's basically about learning to play the piano. Everyone who's learned how to play piano under some teacher will know exactly where this anime is going. Practice, practice, practice for some recital competition or something. Despite it's name, the focus is generally away from the piano and more towards the characters themselves. This one is not for anyone who doesn't have patience or who doesn't have interest in music.

The animation is surprisingly good. Almost all the characters look too tanned. But Miyu is cute. All the other aspects of animation just works great.

The sound is the most important thing in this anime. I loved the piano playing. First time I heard Miyu playing I thought she was stuttering but as she practiced I knew that the piece was meant to have those pauses. The voices are not annoying, and they're quite nice to listen to. I find it particularly hard to fault this anime in the sound category. Possibly I just can't get enough of the intro. Infact I have it playing in the back ground right now as I write this. Very very soothing and I absolutely love it.

Characters reveal themselves through the entire anime. Yuki reveals some of her feminine traits more and more as she becomes infatuated with a boy on the track team. She's concerned with her feminity when her relatives speak of her tomboyish side.

The only thing that makes this anime less enjoyable is the slower pace that the story unfolds. Enjoy the piano, I love the sound of them.

This is a difficult anime to watch if you do not have patience. However, the profound beauty of this anime goes beyond words. I will say without hesitation that this is not an anime for everyone. The climax is subtle, just like the series. However, I will say this is the -best- direction, I have seen in any anime. I love how the director withheld any of the character touching each other until episode nine, making a simple hug one of the most powerful moments I have ever witnessed in all of anime. (Not a spoiler. You won't have a clue as to what I am talking about until you actually get to the very end of it)
If the sound on this anime could be rated higher than a 10, I would indulge. The music is beautiful. As for the animation, it is top notch. This is truly groundbreaking work, hidden behind a very slow and soft-spoken anime.

Wow, this is one of the plainest and most subtle anime I've ever seen. There's barely any climax at all, the whole story seemed to just flow naturally, like what may occur in a school girl's everyday life.

The animation was pretty good in my opinion, everything was drawn with good detail. The sound is pretty nice too, the piano pieces were all well played out and the voice actors also did a great job lending their voice to the characters. The story as I said before, can be a little boring, since it's about a school girl's everyday happenings. Even with a somewhat dull story, I must say that it really did bring back a lot of memories for me from back in the days when I used to play the piano. The feelings of practicing and the tension of recitals were all well depicted.

Overall this was an enjoyable anime, I wouldn't recommend it to just anybody though. The slow paced story and non-climatical plot may be a turnoff to a lot of the viewers. Just watch the first couple of episodes and give it a chance, if you like it, keep watching it, if you don't, then forget it.

This anime was definatly a great experience for me to watch. I enjoyed watching Miu finally play the piece that she wanted and I thought that the music of the entire show, espically what Miu played was delightful.

One minus was the ending... Watch it, and find out for yourself how it ends.

A very boring and tedious anime series. Piano is very inspiring in terms of the use of music, however there is lack of plot development as well as character development.

It's not very action-packed and can be better, I'm so glad that Piano was only 10 episodes long because I would have given up watching it.

I really like this animé... maybe not as much as an alltime favorite, but it is quite good.

The story reall falls behind, but the animé is really good nonetheless.. it proved to me that series don't always need a good story.

I think this is more of a feel-good animé, like to heart. Nothing really serious happens and it only get's excitinv in a way like "will he like her or not".

The piano play is beautifull and there should have been more of it... but it's used in a good way and really improves the sphere in the animé.

I really liked the way this was drawn, too. It's not really special or original, but it's just good. Same for the characters, they were realistic and fun-to-watch, there was no need for them to be original, they were just very good.

I really had a good time watching this animé and i recommend it to anyone who doesn't have a need for chainsaws and gunfights... there is no real story, no exciting moment or extravagant drama, it's just a serie about a girl who's playing piano and having fun with he friend... and i damn like it.=)

I really hope some more people will watch this.=)

*edit*:)
I have now seen all eps and i take back my opinion of the quality of the story... It still is nothing genius, but the last eps bind together the whole animé, giving it a little extra...
Not too much of an morale or whatever, but i really enjoyed it.

More people should watch this!

Quite enjoyable.

The story was nothing special. Basically a story of a girl in middle-school who has been playing the piano all her life. It goes through the ups and downs in her life; at home with her family, at school with her friends and at her piano lessons with her teacher. Many times I found this anime to be very cute.

Animation was quite good, I had no problem with it at all. I actually really liked the animation. Sound was pretty good, though I was hoping for something a bit more memorable since this is an anime about music. Characters were great in this anime, very cute and realistic.

This anime was short and to the point. There isn't any long ongoing drag in the story. Had my attention the whole time. Very enjoyable. Highly recommended. This anime focuses more on quick, cute entertainment rather than on story.

A fairly decent anime about a girl playing the piano. The few pieces that were played were awesome, but there were far too few...

Overall it was actually somewhat stimulating (as opposed to extremely boring), which surprised me considering its theme.

A nice surprise, but far from exceptional.

This anime is not bad, being slow may bother some people but it's not my case, in my opinion it lacks a solid story development, some dialogs too, and well, the ending could be a little bit better, and I won't say why, you'll figure yourself if you watch it.
As for characters, I didn't like many of them but some where nice.
Overall, I don't recomend this, but I wouln't tell anyone not to do so either, it's just not for everyone.

Tough pick. As it´s about a piano, and I played piano almost a decade so I thought this might be interesting. Well, I had the plan to watch the series in one day without a pause. I changed it after episode 2, but I watched it all in one day. I dunno, if you´re watching it for the first time a pause should be good for you, don´t ask me why. As the story develops (?) I got more interested. In the end I have to say, that this anime isn´t extraordinary in any sense. It´s a little bit like a real life. It can seem boring, it can be boring. Yet I enjoyed it as I enjoy boring real life situations.
I have the bad habit to listen simultaniously to music (with the right pair of anime and music it´s awesome) and for the last two episodes I listened Joy Division´s "Love Will Tear Us Apart" in a loop ==> I really enjoyed these episodes "g" . Can I recommend this anime? Not really, you should be able to connect with the story or some other thing of this anime or it will be hard to watch/enjoy

This anime is VERY slow, and the ending is a bit cut short. However, this is a wonderful masterpiece!

animation is great....and for all who complained that the hair was a bit weird, anyone can get used to it...its not abnormal or anything :/ (now KANON is a different story...i just couldnt get used to their faces!!)

sound is obviously 10....

story is very slow in progression, but it manages to have an ending that wrapped it all up. I highly doubt you'll watch this in one sitting, because it can get VERY boring between episodes 1-5, and then it starts getting good at episode 6 - 9, and episode 10 wraps it all up (but I wasn't satisfied at all w/ ending).

the characters aren't original, but they each have their own personalities, so its good. (just me or yuki's boyfriend = SHINJI from kimi ga nozumu eien? how they view girls are VERY similar)

ok, this isnt the BEST anime, but if you have the time, this is a very enjoying, light movie.

This is a very different anime to what anyone would expect. We're all used to the 'out-of-this-world' type of animes that suddenly we're hit with one like 'Piano' that reflects the real world like a mirror.

I have to admit, for the first half of the series I was ssoooo bored, not to mention quite annoyed too at the slow development of the story. I guess it's because 'Piano' reflects the everyday life so well that it appears boring...afterall, life isn't that exciting when it's just ordinary like Miu's. Nevertheless, I give credit to the people being brave enough to put out an anime like this, and the ending is really good. (They really saved the best for last).

There's one thing that REALLY REALLY bothers me about this anime, and that's character design. I mean, WHAT'S WITH THE HAIR??? o_O it looks soooo unnatural...especially Miu's! Her hair looks like a wig and the way it stands out is just not right. It just gets really irritating when u see something unnatural like that - especially when the story is so smooth and easy-going. Just doesn't quite fit in.

Other than that the anime I good overall. The music used is excellent (well of course, judging by the title). I recommend it to people who want to watch something different for a change...but PLEASE, don't stop watching till you reach the end.

I actually enjoyed watching this one. It left me with a pleasant feeling. Sort of nostalgic.
One problem I had was they it didn't really go into the relationship between Mui's sister and Mui's teacher. Their relationship should've either been fully explained or just left out.
Another problem, I don't get a sense of closure for the series. I would've liked to know what happens to Mui and the boy she likes.
All in all, I'd recommend the series to anyone looking for something pleasant to watch on a lazy afternoon. Also, I'm a pianist myself and I think the opening piano music is very good.
