It really was two finishing episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion. The story was once again hard to follow, the animation was still very good and the characters were more or less as they always were.

This movie left a small impression on me. That impression seemed to have faded away, but, from time to time, I ponder about some of the scenes from the movie. If you were disappointed with the last two episodes of the series or wanted to see the ending from another point of view, rent this movie. I also advise you not to watch it in the dark.

End of Evangelion was the highly anticipated movie and conclusion to the TV series Neon Genesis Evangelion, which turned out to be nothing short of a total disappointment.

The quality of the art and animation are about the same as the first half of the TV series. Although there were a few CG scenes at the end of the movie, there were no general improvements in animation between the TV series and this movie.

The sounds and music are also not much different in quality from the TV series. Most of the background music isn't noticable, probably due to the awful storyline, but some of songs are pleasant to listen to.

The storyline is awful. It does answer all the questions introduced during the TV series, but the explanations are horrendously bad. The only thing this movie accomplishes in terms of storyline is converting all the unanswered questions from the TV series into an awfully confusing mess that makes no sense at all. Explaining in more detail would involve introducing spoilers.

Contradiction. Most of the characters in End of Evangelion contradict their TV series predecessors. Most of them also carry out acts of obscenity for illogical reasons. Some character development is done, but again, in a way that only lead to more confusion.

I for one didn't enjoy this movie, and unless you are a hardcore Evangelion fan, I would recommend skipping this movie, as it only does harm to the storyline of Neon Genesis Evangelion.

The anime was great withuot the movie and the movie really continues the last 4 eps of the anime which seem ultra weird. The whole concept was with the anime from the beginning and it is one way to explain the eva stuff but there was other ways to do it and this was really one of the worst way to end the anime.

Something tells me that Haruhi Suzumiya would have loved this movie. Around the halfway mark, the movie falls into showing scenes that don’t focus on the storyline, but scenes to represent the characters thoughts and emotions at the time, which are most likely put there to remind viewers that, like the last two episodes of the original series: Evangelion is all about the characters. There is also the possibility that they were put in there to waste time, but the content inside these scenes say otherwise. The dialogue, the locations and the characters actions all show the pain they are going through in different situations.

However the way each of these scenes were shown on screen with absolutely no explanation at all is defiantly confusing. Why would Shinji be throwing around chairs screaming at a depressed Asuka “Don’t leave me alone! Please don’t kill me!”? Why would a younger Shinji be building a sandcastle, and then resorting to destroying it? Why would all of the characters be suddenly crowded inside a train, and giving each other lectures of a most disturbingly and direct nature? Many viewers would find these scenes extremely odd and perhaps even disturbing, but that’s exactly why I loved this movie.

This second half of the movie becomes its highlight or downfall depending on the audience watching it, and that’s where my “Haruhi” comparison comes in. A character like Haruhi would love the second half, simply because it is anything but ordinary. “Weird” would be a very accurate description. However, a normal person, like let’s say Kyon, would find this second half completely disorientating and would find himself asking questions about the movie until it is over. By the end, there has been no logical explanation for the previous scenes, so the viewer concludes that the movie made no sense, and as a result was a flop.

Whichever way you look at it, End of Evangelion is “weird”, and this fact could rub someone either the right or wrong way. However, being a movie, it requires explanations for what it is showing, and this is what it seriously lacks. You could say that this is the movie’s flaw, but I disagree. End of Evangelion was made to replace the last two episodes- and the last two episodes showed the characters thoughts and nothing else. Fans were pissed off by this approach to conclude the series, so complained. But even if these episodes had a larger animation budget, the general content inside these two episodes would have been more or less the same.

However, some scenes were completely useless and served no purpose, whether it being to show the characters thoughts or to help the storyline. The live action in the movie was stupid, annoying and pointless. The talk between Shinji and Kaoru about what is reality and what are dreams was interesting, but didn’t really have a point. Meanwhile, even though the way many scenes are composed look artistic, they don’t really have much of a meaning to them, they’re just well composed scenes.

Overall, End of Evangelion is the kind of movie you have to try and guess yourself what happened. It’s defiantly a weird and unique movie, and I’d recommend you watch it solely for that reason. Even thought the movie seriously lacked some explanation to what was happening, I’d say End of Evangelion is a pretty satisfying and conclusive ending to the series.

I was perfectly satisfied with the original ending of Evangelion. Why is there a need for the whole world to be saved and to involve a massive operation of UN personell attacking NERVE in order to fullfill SEELE's aims?
Why (as is mostly the case) does everyone need to die , thus making everything so tragic? Why does Sinji's father for the first time ever look so confused and terrified? That ruined the character completely.
Why didnt SEELE acted in that manner from the first episode of NGE allready then?
I felt confused to the end.

I'll admit that visually this work is worth watching more than once (even for those who havent seen Evangelion) . But do not expect any coherence.

If you didnt like the original ending then I;d recommend watching this as it gives the ending a little more mainstream look.

I found the whole anime to be rather unnecessary. Better make something focusing on the characters past prior to the Second Impact (like Misato's).

This is unfortunately a mustwatch too because it has to do with Evangelion. But not an enjoyable one

Hideaki Anno went overboard on this one. While the last two episodes of NGE were weird, this was the last straw.

Psychotic doesnt even start to describe this anime. I understand that Hideaki was pissed by the mails he had recieved on the original ending so this is his revenge on us. And boy! Does Anno get his revenge? YES. He gets his revenge by making us sit 2 hours in front of the TV and then by making us bash our heads on the wall cos we couldn't figure what in the name of heaven happened...

The story picks off where episode 24 has been left. NERV has done it's job when SEELE attacks it. Shinji - The number 1 depressed boy in the history of mankind has to save the world yet again. ASUKA - The number 1 concieted female also has to fight but first she must get over her mom's suicide. She then goes HYPER and attacks every Angel only to get herself ****** (won't tell u, watch the movie!) Misato turns paedophile and (won't tell u, watch the movie!) And then the best part - All the people on earth die - except Shinji ofcourse... The number 1 Depresso has to decide the fate of the earth and thus goes into monlogue lasting 30 min (read eternity) which drove me insane.

How are the characters? Well devolped but unfortunately Hideaki does'nt allow you to appreciate them for what they are. Although Shinji and Asuka are in pitiable conditions trying to find happiness we never get to understand them. And hence it is left to us for to deicde.

What is the value - A good headache!!! On the serious side, End of Eva's value can only be understood if you are able to go through the headache to understand what really happens.

And what is the enjoyment - Don't start. End of Eva had infinite potential. But convoulting the already convoluted story and dissecting Shinji's mind was just too much to swallow. Not so enjoyable.

But End of Eva does have its moments. Anno certainly did convey somethings well by this installment. It is just that the way he delivered them was too much for us to handle. So - watch this movie when you have nothing to think about and have a totally empty head. The movie is meant to make you think - how that is left to you... I did and ended up understanding it - but just a bit more.

It might help you understand the movie.

Neon genesis evangelion made a huge succeed but after watching it I think it left many questions and a feeling that the producters fell out of money. Nge contained very much confusing things and the couple of last episodes were only mind bending. Altough it was all about human evolution, the story was confusing and actually it didn't end... So, Hideaki Anno decided to give it a new try... Can he this time make a end. To me end of evangelion makes me think that why to make a new ending to a anime that he can't end.

Evangelion: end of evangelion begins at episode 24 when the last angel had been defeated. But the action starts when SEELE decides to attack NERV with huge croups. Also Shinji and Asuka seemed to be very depressed and lost their will to live. Asuka has to fight alone with EVA because Shinji doesn't want to pilot EVA. Misato tries to get shinji piloting EVA but will Shinji do it? Rei Ayanami is with Gendo Ikari who asks her to take Gendo to Yui. The whole world is in Shinjis hand when he goes inside the EVA but how does he decide that it will go? Shinji is on his own!

I have to say that end of evangelion tells the last 2 episodes more clearly than in the series but the bad plot in ending isn't going anywhere. Hideaki Anno has always described well, the suffer of Shinji Ikari but those mind bending parts really aren't making me to enjoy the show. This OVA should clear the end and finish it but to me, it only makes me feel more confused. And another thing is that why did they put a real life videos in it, it didn't make any sense to me. In the end there are the same problems as in the series, Shinji tries to find happiness. And again lots of mind bending, memories and lots of suffering but the end is made little better than in the series. Maybe they should try again and name it evangelion: the second end of evangelion :).

Evangelion have always had good visual points and this doesn't make an exception. The animation is great in a anime that is published at 1997. The characters are also good but suffer because of the confusing plot. Sounds are the basic... well made like it has always been in nge. Even though end of evangelion has good animation, sounds and characters, the plot is so bad that it really drops the enjoyment of this anime. It's a pitty, this could've been something big.

But overall it's not that bad. In some parts I even liked it. I love evangelion but I hate evangelion. I recommend this anime to everybody, I recommend this anime to nobody. Enjoy the show!!

The movie was created when the directors were recieving threat emails after the mixed reactions from the last two episodes of their controversial series, Neon Genesis Evangelion. Well, if they wanted to keep their lives from a mob of angry fans wearing Evangelion attire, this movie was produced to deliver an ending that may please those who were disappointed with the series finale. As if episodes 25 and 26 weren't mind bending, thought twisting, pyschologically breaking enough. Evangelion is a show that isn't afraid to break your mentally. End of Evangelion is the icing around the cake to ensure your views on life will permanently change.

After what had happened between the new EVA pilot, everyone, including Shinji, Misato, and Asuka, have lost their will to live. What a bad time to be in the abyss of depression, because SEELE decides to attack NERV. Since NERV was solely meant to intercept large creatures, such as the Angels, they put up very little defense against this squad. Plus, your three pilots that might be your only chance of surviving, are either missing, or have lost the will to live. Though Asuka was able to grab on to that light, and was able to defeat the forces penetrating NERV outside the base. Her performance closely matches when the UN military was attacking the third angel in the first episode. But things turn out sourly when the EVA series start battling against Asuka, and that's when Shinji explodes.

The last two episodes of Neon Genesis were more mind bending. End of Evangelion is astonishingly shocking. Near the middle of the movie, something mind defying happens that's just so incredible. The entire time watching End of Evangelion, you're picturing the insides of a man being removed from him. The feeling, the atmosphere of this movie is just literally so organic. In the past, rituals were used in movies to make something big happen. Though I can gaurantee that you've never seen anything like End of Evangelion before. The level of intensity to the brain is above anything seen on TV before.

To sum everything up in short, End of Evangelion goes beyond the boundaries. If you like shows that can challenge your mentally, then Neon Genesis and End of Evangelion is what you need. But don't be surprised if you find yourself holding your head in disbelief.

GAINAX is one of my favorite anime company, and Anno is one of my favorite anime director. Give him credit for sticking up to all the people who said the ending in the series was horrible with a terrifyingly unsatisfying conclusion to this incredibly disturbed Otaku classic.

Now that said i wasn't all that satisfied with the seris ending either but i did think it provided an answer to the ideas and questions that this series asked. In that sense the series ending appropriate and well done.

This movie however concludes evangelion in the most disturbed and horrifying manner. Not to mention that i barely understood anything when I first saw it. Everything was so cryptic to a point I could not take it anymore.

To compliment this utterly disturbed conclusion is strikingly mediocre animation and lackluster music along with characters that really doesn't do much in this movie. Wow why did they even make this movie? oh yea Hideaki wanted to stick it up to the man... at least that's my guess.

After more that two years, I am rewriting this review (well, the opening). Not because my opinion has changed, rather because clearly it was not expressed strongly enough. This is a “film”ladies and gentlemen, not to be confused with the term “movie”, which to me means nothing more than inane dialogue as a backdrop to the sickening smacking of lips as you make out with your ugly girlfriend on a Saturday night! This HAS substance, this HAS meaning, and people should simply admit they didn't “get it” instead of hopping on their high art high horse and ramble on about “symbolism” in a vain attempt to justify their opinion.

It is fine not to like it, after all, it isn't perfect.

Yet, to criticise its attempts at doing something meaningful, to criticise its unique visual style as “shit” or to criticise its plot twists or character developments as “contradictory” to me simply means you didn't understand it. I cannot claim to understand every little thing about EVA. I don't think anybody can. Yet, all of the questionable elements of the film, as well as the plot choices the film makes are justifiable. To avoid the risk of this review being deleted (for “inciting flame war”) I will not deliver a point by point rebuttal of the review (which, despite the fact that I disagreed with it entirely was valid) which compelled me to rewrite this, nor will I name names.

However, I will simply state this: The “depth” of Evangelion is not in some religious commentary or philosophy, it has neither. It is in its presentation, in its imagery, from which we, as the viewer, determine its symbolic meaning. A flag is symbolic of a nation, that is obvious. But what does the melding of different religious symbols represent? What do lines like “This is the end of your dream?” mean. Though we do not know for certain, people have formed a general consensus on both of these, indeed almost all of the elements of the film. They do indeed have meaning, the meaning we give to it. After all, that is how images become “symbolic” of something in the first place: people identify it as representative of a concept, an idea, a nation.

In summation, it is known for certain many of the images in Eva were there just to be “different” and seem more complex in comparison to other shows, but despite this, Evangelion has achieved a special significance within Otaku culture; its beautiful but bleak, tortured imagery surrounding its now iconic characters have come to represent (and GASP be symbolic of) the life of the Otaku, a life forever immersed in the dreamlike world of anime. Its intended meaning is obvious, but the success of EVA ultimately lies in the uncertainty; to be able to watch it again and again to find meaning, to draw your own conclusions, to actually think instead of the so called “philosophy” being printed right in front of you. EoE is what you want it to be, but undeniably it is a masterpiece.

I've finally recovered enough from my eva-phobia to write an understandable review for this anime, as the first one I made I was unhappy with.

First off, this movie is the most bizzare thing you will ever watch. There are battles that will long be remembered, there are emotional struggles that are quite disturbing, and of course there's Shinji's heroic battle to recover his sanity.

Tons of things in this movie seem to be just additions that Anno through in randomly; I.e the Tree of Life, People turning into orange jucie, and Rei becoming a planet siezed figure with wings. There are some other things mentioned,"Adam" & "Lilith" are both key parts to the story, and I advise you to read up a little on them to better understand this delightful plot.

Thick minded people and folk who try and stick away from questions that make one loose all sanity will probably preffer the original ending to the series. Many complain that it was too disturbing, too insane, too F'n confusing. That can certianly be taken into consideration, as there are many new elements that are introduced and remain unexplained; and what with Shinji turning into a god and all, one can assume that the movie is just a little bit strange.

No one can accurately explain EoE. It's just to damn wierd. The best thing you can do is put yourself in a straight jacket and watch the movie 5 or 6 times and see how badly you need a phyciatrist near the end.

The ratings I gave are honest, everything was perfect. Just don't, whatever you do, don't watch the dub. It's God Awful. Same saying goes with every anime, so no surprises there. Watch this more than once, if you think you know everything, then you know absolutly nothing.

Ah well, so I finally got around to watching it.

I'm kinda havin split opinions on it. On the one hand, it has great animation, and beautiful sound. The story is also pretty well-written.

This is where the problems begin however. As great as it is, I can't really say I enjoyed watching it. There were times that I considered just turning it off and do something else. It was just too much. Too much angst from Shinji, too much sad deaths of key-characters. Just.. to damn depressing for me to like it.

This movie is a waste of time in relations to the TV series. I does not bring anything new to it that is worth noting. On a personal level, I think Evangelion should have ended at episode 24. The last two episodes of the series and this do not do Evangelion justice at all. A series cannot be completely symbolic if it did not abandon itself to the concept from the start. Ultimately, this is what fails Evangelion. I do not know why the director has bothered making a movie that YES answers questions but has the most feeble to give. The more important questions, the ones about the charaters, are not answered and that leaves the movie feeling shallow and incoherent. There is no real premise for the way some of the characters act here. I don't know how but the characters made Shinji more despicable in this movie and wasted valuable plot time trying very unsuccessfully to show why he was that way. The sound brings nothing new to the series. The animation as usual is top notch bar the long still frames and a few reused cels. The battles are choreographed beautifully, especially when Asuka is given the chance to shine and when Misato rescues Shinji. The only character that was believable through the movie, much like in the series, is Misato. She was the only one who did not get a personality transplant to conveniently fit with the plot and pace of the movie. Asuka's character development is another one that is not completely unbelievable as anyone who has seen the series would expect her to loose it in one of the most epic anime battle sequences. Rei is her usual self, meaning still as one-dimensional. Gendo is again a complete waste of time as he gives his feeble take on why he kept his distance from Shinji all these years. Ritsuka is actually not too bad in this as she regains some of her original appeal in her later scenes. Shinji as I mentioned ealier is still a pain, but a crazy one this time. Taking all taht into account the movie fails as much as it delivers character wise. Because of this, the movie does not stand up to be as good as it could have in terms of story. The end resolution is not bad, the Art for that is very good. It just does not seem to be a fitting ending to this series. I did not enjoy this movie as much as I could have because of its obvious flaws but it has an eery beauty that makes it of some value.

The final installment of this very popular anime. First to start off you really, really need to watch the anime to understand anything thats going on (atleast watch Death and Rebirth which summarizes parts of the main series).

This anime is one that you totally appreciate or totally hate, there isn't too much middle ground, because there is a true ending but for your own piece of mind you wish there was a little more to make you feel better or comfirm your fears for the characters. The action in this anime is as good as Evangelion has ever had, and the characters are at their own respective highpoints (in terms of what they have been about throughout the whole series). At times can be hard to follow, you will probably need to watch it more than once and might even want someone to explain some of the more complex symbols and issues.

I once heard that the creator of this anime suffered from severe depression, and I still don't know if thats true but after watching this anime all the way though, it wouldn't surprise me if something wasn't wrong with him, ala Vincent Van Gogh

With this anime, it would appear that Evangeleon has finally come to an end. This started where the recap part of death and rebirth ended and continued the story from then on.

First of all I thought the repeat of the whole of the second half of the anime was unnecessary, and was only there to make up for time. Other people took the marks off death and rebirth for that, but I believe that it should be taken off here, as this is where it is repeated. Argument for inclusion of the second half of Death and Rebirth could be that it's for the purpose of completeness, I think repeating what was already done in Death and Rebirth was a mistake. This should have been just an ova to finish off the series, but instead they tried to make a movie out of it.

Anyway, as this continued from where Death and Rebrith ended, it became more and more exciting... and then it all went weird again. Watched it once, didn't understand it. Watched it again. This time with the commentary on. Second time around, with the help of the people doing the commentary, I was able to understand it better, and was able to appreciate a lot of the subtle symbolims that went past me the first time. But still, it didn't all make sense, in fact there were parts that even the people doing the commentary admitted they had no clue about. At the end of it I still had no idea about some of the events. Such as what plan Shinji's dad had in mind, and the stuff about the lance. And the bit at the very end. These are just a few of the questions that the anime didn't explain satisfactorily for me. Part of the reason I think lies with my ignorance with the bible. Things like the tree of life and the 7 eyes of God I had no clue about. My patience is this anime is at an end. I don't think I'll go studying the bible intensively just for the sake of this anime. This wide open to interpretation and speculation style anime just doesn't suit my tastes.

Loved the first part though. The animation production seem to get better with every new addition to the eva series. Things like the use of classical music I thought was very well done. There were some bits that I thought was un-necessarily disturbing though. Like the scene between Shinji and Misato and also the opening scene. Seems like they like to show shocking scenes just for the sake of shocking people. But those bits always just seems like unnecessary extras to me.

On Hindsight, out of the series, Death and Rebirth and EoE, I'd definitely say that Death and Rebirth was the best, the most flawless piece of work.

End of Evangelion, was a nice finish to a good series. This "movie" explains the ending events of Eva. more in depth. This effectively eliminates the VERY crappy last two episodes of the tv series. If you want to know more read my review.
