Quote:
Akanegaoka's soccer doesn't have a system or tactics!
Originally written as manga by Takahashi Youichi (Captain Tsubasa) and directed by Saga Satoshi (Koutetsu Sangokushi) Hungry Heart: Wild Striker is a football themed anime centered on the life of a brother of a football ace player, Kanou Kyousuke. Kyousuke, having lived most of his life under his brother's shadow is about to give up on football when he meets a girl, captain of girls football club in the school he attends, and eventually is literally dragged down to become a member of Akanegoaka's boys football team. And so Kyousuke begins to play football once again, this time determined to catch up with his brother and, of course, win the nationals. Add the usual friendship, hard-work and spirit to the mix and you'll get your usual sports anime, this time in footballer's uniform.
Hungry Heart: Wild Striker is the first anime about football I have ever watched and given that football is the only sport I bother to watch on TV once in a four years I did indeed expect to enjoy it. While I can't say I hated this show and I admit I witnessed some spirit-lifting moments inside, it's still an anime with horrid production values and standards low even for the godforsaken sports genre. Leaving the already record breaking animation aside, Wild Striker also fails to immerse you in the world of football with its hardly spectacular matches and generic characters whose personalities don't even achieve one-dimensional right. It's quite a let down that majority of games are won by willpower of Kanou alone scoring a number of goals in a row at a last minute. Even the ever so rare terrific feat of having an ending doesn't save this show from being simply dull. You know where the plot is going, and though there are some surprises, it goes the exact way you'd expect it to and offers nothing memorable whatsoever. I personally find even real world football more exciting than this anime, so I can hardly imagine anyone, even the football fans, having a more positive than meh reaction towards it.
Conclusion: Hungry Heart: Wild Striker is a football themed anime which leisurely copies everything what other sports anime have done before and does it worse. Matches lack excitement, characters are half-baked and plot is predictable. Unless you really like football and sincerely want to waste 52 episodes of time on the show you could say you have already seen somewhere don't touch Wild Striker. It's not really a complete mess and it has its moments, but those moments are not enough to make your time worthwhile. If you are interested in sports just watch Slam Dunk or Hajime no Ippo.

| The best part of this sport anime is its unpredictability. We're all used to the main team winning and winning and being unbeatable but this one really kicks it to the curb.
Animation: At some parts, the details seem to lag a bit and is sub par but for the most part, the animation is very enjoyable
Sound: Although the second OP made me cringe and grab my gun, the soundtrack throughout the anime was very fitting and exciting, not to mention the first opening was fantastic.
Story: It didn't focus only on soccer, which I found very refreshing. There was a bit of side-romance (and I really appreciate that they didn't focus much on this, which couldn've self-destructed) as well as some surprises regarding Kyosuke's origin so I wasn't bored with constant soccer games (Slam Dunk kinda bored me at some points with repetitively LONG games). Again, the games themselves were amazing with Kyosuke's unpredictable plays. The results of the games were also a refreshing twist (at times frustrating, but that's good as well).
Character: I am officially in love with Kanou Kyosuke and is working on starting a fanclub that will span across North America, Asia and eventually the whole world, not to mention investing millions of dollars in creating my own "Kanou" (sue me). But enough about me. The characters were fleshed out okay, although nothing too spectacular but not bad either. The pasts of the characters played a role so that was nice to see. PS: Sako is next on my list, closely followed by Sakai >.>
Value/Enjoyment: Overall, very enjoyable. I marathoned this and finished all 52 eps within a week (that's within a 40 work week). Yes I have no life. However, the fact that I marathoned it means it's at least GREAT. Definitely worth a watch, especially if you're a sports anime fan.

| Ah Hungry Heart, it's a good anime without any complications like in whistle. As you already, it's made by the creator of Captain Tsubasa.
Well, Yoichi Takahashi made a big improvement there. Usually in Captain Tsubasa, you know that the hero's team will win!
That's not the case with Hungry Heart! It is a very surprising anime with lots of suspense.
The music was very likeable especially the opening of the first season except the sound OMG. When someone kicked the ball, it's as if the ball is made in plastic! I wonder why they did that! It sounds so fake!
As for the story, it's both humourous and dramatic. The background story of some characters were very dramatic too. Many people hated the ending. I won't tell you what happen but I like it very much because it was very dramatic.
Lastly, the characters. You are presented with a wide range of characters. The most interesting of them are perhaps Kanou (Arrogant), Rodrigo(a gentleman compared to Kanou), Sakai (He thinks he's Elvis), Esaka (The funny guy of the team, a bit like Ishizaki in Captain Tsubasa), Ichikawa (has a bad temper). It's very fun to see them get into conflicts with other team members.
I would also say that the characters were very developed especially the main character Kanou Kyosuke. Unlike Tsubasa Oozora who is the good guy of the show, Kanou tends to appear as a naughty, arrogant and evil guy who plays very personal sometimes.
Overall, this is one of the best sports anime I've watched. Once you pop, you can't stop and it's true. Once you watch an episode, you can't stop watching because each episode keeps you in suspense.

| this anime is well, different. i love sport anime fans but the way this anime goes it completely different.
at first the trio kanou, rordigo and sasuke are at each necks and want to be regulars on the soccer team, and everyone has there reason to play soccer.
this anime had lots of spirt and guts and will power, but this anime also shows that even with all this and the hardwork you put out, everything just doesnt turn out to be perfect, at first i wanted akane to win the nationals so they could reach there dream of being champions, yes thats how addicting it was! i wanted anime characters to have fulfill there dreams lol.
what really pissed me off was the ending,
rodrigo givin up to be pro and support his family to play soccer with kanou and sasuke givin up his chance as well to be pro and play with his childhood soccer friends just to play soccer with kanou was really touching, seeing how they first started as selfish soccer punks and eventually became good friends/rivals was a good developement, but then kanou gets his chance to be pro and dives at it, being really selfish in my opinion. the love romance between kanou and mikito really lacked.
having seen akane high try so hard to be champions and not suceeding mad me sorta sad and having kanou leaving the team hanging at the last episode kinda ruined this anime for me, the first 51 episodes were great but the last episode just ruined it for me, bad ending i guess

| At first, the anime started a bit slow... When Kyosuke was being the team manager of the girls team and when he was training. I decided to continue watching it because it was made by the same creator of Captain Tsubasa.
Overall it is a great anime better than Captain Tsubasa 2002.

| Wow... the only thing I can say is WOW!
I've always liked soccer series (specially Captain Tsubasa and Top Striker) so I was very happy to hear about the Hungry Heart: Wild Striker, which is made by the same guy as made Cap.Tsubasa
This is just one of those series you get "hooked" on and rip the whole serie apart in two-three days.
In short... its one of the most fun anime series I've ever seen, the only possible flaw is the low variety of songs.
KANOU KYOSUKE, BE THE FATHER OF MY BABIES!

| Wild Striker/Hungry Heart doesn't seem to be a well-known or popular anime, but don't be put off by this! There is lots of action and humor in store for you!
The series began rather slow with little vigor, with only the main character begin sufficiently developed. After it started picking up pace past episode 9 or 10, that's when it really starts getting better...
Animation: The average is found here, with interesting character design and people who have diferent emotions and faces all the time. The rigid and thick lines help to emphasize the actual facial expression to bring out good, rugged and masculine characters.
Sound: Nice opening and ending themes (unfortunately I heard the dubbed opening, in which the singer was pretty hopeless), however, I am sure that the Japanese singer must have been good. The music was very suited to the mood of the anime because it is upbeat and optimistic, matching the soccer players' morale.
Story: With ups and downs, Wild Striker depicts a very dramatic soccer-life of the protagonist team where all the other rival schools want to kill, oops, I mean cripple the main character. Most of the time this is quite exciting and fun to watch because humor has been added to the script, but it's quite unfair that the main character (Kyousuke, was it?) gets the most attention of all.
Despite this, the other characters are not to be missed. Most of them have individual episodes based on them when their character development takes on a roll. Sometimes their backgrounds are emotional and other times dramatic, but always fun to watch because of the ultimate lightheartedness.
The storyline can be a little unrealistic at times because Kyousuke's skill is somehow very superior compared to other schools' players even though his leg was previously injured. (He still gets to score things like 7-0 which is not quite practical in the real world).
However, there were other times when I thought that Jyoyo (was it?) would win yet their adversary ends up beating them in soccer. The unpredictability of Wild Striker/Hungry Heart keeps up pace until the end of the series, so that watchers won't know what to expect!
Characters: A nice set of well-drawn and realistic characters are here. They are an interesting team of soccer players because of the mixing of various personalities. Character development, as stated before, was unfortunately mainly directed towards the main character.
You're stuck with Kyousuke almost throughout the entire series, and although fortunately he is never truly pompous, he is, unfortunately, quite stubborn so can be annoying. Enjoy the rest of the cast, though, as they have warmhearted personalities and humorous sides (not to say that Kyosuke is a horrible guy).
Enjoyment: Sports anime do not usually appeal to me but I did watch Battle Athletes Victory + Slam Dunk and above that enjoyed Prince of Tennis. Wild Striker/Hungry Heart is unlike Prince of Tennis because it does not focus on soccer matches (which are relatively short) and mainly aim to develop the characters' inter-relations (which is good!).
This is one of the better sports anime out there because of good plot (the story takes unexpected turn of events) and original characters.

| Boring op song, average soccer high school club.. nothing new.. but I would never give up u know why? BECAUSE I LOVE SOCCER! SOCCER IS MY LIFE AND NOW I WILL SCORE!@!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hahaha.. that's the feeling when you watch this anime. Everytime Kyousuke got the ball, something interesting will happen. It's so fun and want to watch more to see what they gonna become after such hardship. Story wasn't that interesting, but character development help a long the way. Start out with first years in high school, then they keep boot out senior, bring in new werid characters. Althou the end wasn't as smooth as I wanted. It's still cool too see Orange Head finally do something big.
Another word, this is just plain fun like when you watch a soccer game or maybe more. This anime is something you should give it a chance b4 hating it.

| Wild Striker is an un-known, really nice anime.
Because this is a soprt anime, many people will just ignore it, but it actually one of the best sports anime around.
I heard a lot of good opinions about this, so i tried the first 5 episoides.
i was fairly disappointed, because it wasn't really exciting or addicting, but i continued anyway.
It became much better after like 7 episoides, then the real "action" began.
I got addicated to it, and just couldn't stop.
I was dead waiting for the next episoide.
Anyway, because of it length, you may think it will take a lot of time to watch this, but actually you can watch it like 2 or 3 times without even noticing.
This is a reccomended anime.

| The series started a bit sluggish, but didn't disappoint. One of the best sports animes I've seen, Wild Striker left me wishing for more when it ended. The characters are very similar to those in Slam Dunk, as is the concept in general. I often had the feeling I was watching Slam Dunk in an alternative universe where they played soccer instead (not a bad thing since Slam Dunk was very good). The series progresses more rapidly though, even the most important games don't last several episodes, and it had better script. And definitely smarter characters (Slam Dunk was a bit goofy and had more comedy value). Wild Striker is also more realistic; even when the players get their spirits to full gear and go for the decisive shootout, they'd still miss and lose the game time and again. Some moments were quite emotional. The ending took quite a surprising step and I wonder where the series would go from there if they made another season.
Summary: You probably hate it or love it, as with most sports animes.

| I have seen many sports anime... and this one is the best one!! .. The only other one that could compare to this series is hajime no ippo...i think most people who have review this series have not watched enough of the anime to make a good evaluation..... I think this series is completly under-rated and deserves a lot more credit than what people give it......Hungry Heart(wild striker) has a solid story! ... You learn to feel for the caracters! .. You'll find your self cheering for joyoyo... The strongest point on this series is character development! .. Another good thing about it is that you could never predict what is going to happend next!... completly unpredictible!! ..Do your self a favor watch this series... do not stop watching it after only 4 or 5 episodes.. you'll be sorry that you did cuz u'll be missing on one of the best series ...trust me!!

| i think most ppl who have written reviews here have not watched enough of the anime to make a good evaluation...however, this is just my personal opinion and i know ppl have different thinking patterns than my own.
i think this is one of the best animes although it is old...the animation gets a lot better as you keep watching...there is huge improvements...i also really enjoy the story and how it is very intriguing and realistic...many different circumstances come up and that makes it unboring...i am not a sports person at all but this is an anime that can get me excited...the plot also develops and the relationship between characters as well...the anime does really well with soccer obviously but it also incorporated other emotional aspects like love relationships and family complexes....i believe this isn't an easy thing to do...i am not the type to care too much about music but i do like upbeat and thrilling tunes while watching the soccer games in the anime...however the ending songs are less well liked...for me personally, this is not an anime i could watch over and over...but the first time i watch it is really worth it and i can never wait to watch the next episode...of course there is always one or two boring episodes but in order for development of character it is needed....however sometimes seemingly boring episodes are actually very entertaining....you will like it if you give it a try and watch the anime!

| I saw only the first 12 episodes and I was a little bit disapointed, since i was expecting a better anime from the creator of captain tsubasa. The animation is bad, don't tell me its a 2000 anime i have seen better animation for older anime (look at nadesico for example or evangelion). The design is also bad, the characters are badly drawn with not enough details, and the decors are too static, and i don't even talk about the soccer ball effects the first captain tsubasa is far better in reproducing the soccer ball shooting effects. The characters are somehow interesting, the hero has a good personality (esspecially his attractiveness to brawling), and there is some feminine characters that add a sentimental value to the anime. In brief, if u have already seen prince of tennis (the best sport series ever), whistle, and slam dunk, then watch this anime it can entertain you, for me i watched only the first episodes because i wanted to sleep at night.

| I watched this anime after watching "Whistle", which was the first sports anime I ever watched. This anime is really boring. The characters are flat and uninteresting. They do not inspire you to care for them. The main character kyosuke gets so annoying. Like the reviewer said before. This anime keeps repeating the same cycle over and over again. I did not completely watch the last 20 or so episodes, just kind of skimmed over them to see if anything interesting happened and it seemed like the same thing. The animation was lacking and the characters were cookie cutter. Whistle was a lot better. If you want a good soccer anime, watch that.

| Among the fans of Yoiji Takahashi (author of Captain Tsubasa and Hungry Heart- Wild Striker), I am looking forward to this anime. The animation deserve 9 for 2000 production. It is a fine animation but it is not neat enough to deserve perfect 10. Sound, well it is not that bad either. Their opening song is a bit annoying, but the whole dubbing team did well in most of the aspects. Characters deserve perfect 10, as most of the sport anime always coming up with the different personality and friendship. Collectible value still questioning as this anime move into a strange pace and there are no solid animation, sound. Enjoyment is their keys, the sport anime always entertaining. Story, I give the credit that the author learn more about football than the time he wrote Captain Tsubasa. He tends to know that in the real football, one man team did not exist anymore. So, Wild Striker is more reality than Captain Tsubasa in this aspects. However, the scorelines are crazy in this anime. If you look at the real football league in most of the countries, there are no such thing as 6-5 or 10-0. Most of the games will ended up around 1-0,2-1,2-0,3-2 (at most), 4-3 (consider classic), and 6-0 (biggest demolition). It is rare to see 7-1 (which consider as a real classic as well). So, I do not understand the plot such as 6-5, 11-0 and so on. The story of Seisuke (Kyousuke's brother), who went to join AC Milan after his high school amateur, and become their key player is a bit radiculous and very impossible. It is too unrealistic. I did not mean to criticize the Asian standard, you knows as well as I do that Inamoto, Nakata, Sun Jihai, and Takahara made their names in Europe. However, You can see that Nakata plays J-League for a while, then he has to go to Perugia, Roma, Parma, and now Bologna. He is among the best Asians player but never go to the club that is as big and as powerful as AC Milan (except Roma, which he fails to get first team regular). Inamoto also another great example, he is a key player for Gamba but his move to Arsenal (this one is about the same level with Milan) was not impressive either. He has to move to Fulham and now W.B.A., which are not hunting for title but fighting relegation battle instead. The story about Seisuke is too fairytales and it make me laugh. If you know about football, you will know that the scout of the big club such as Real Madrid, AC Milan, ManU, Arsenal, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, etc. will never interest in Asian amateur players. They have their own academy, which selects the best players out of Europe. You always learn that the worldclass players always coming from their academy, such as Owen, Cole, Beckham, Lampard, Gerrard, Commandini, Coco, Raul, etc. The only foreign players that come to the great clubs are always big name superstars from the Asians, South American Clubs and most of them were failure. The story of Kyousuke is good. His development and efforts are awesome. Also, there are too much chatting on the football field. The real games you are hardly talk non sense on the field. The player only communicate to each other by sign or code. The word from or to your opponents are limited to swearing (only a few word) to make them angry. The chatting for 2-3 minutes will never exist and those killer yell and execution move are radiculous. No one doing that, you just simply score.

| Wild Striker has some sentimental moments that are over-dramatized; however, overall, this anime is great and I can't wait to watch the progess of Jyoyo and Kanou-kun. There are many conflicts that each of the characters has to struggle through and find their own answers. IMHO, I would recommend this series to everyone and especially soccer fanatics ^^. GO JYOYO!

| The animation is of a good quality and I enjoy the character designs. The soundtrack has its pluses and minuses, but overall it's tolerable and some of it is enjoyable. The story is suitable for a soccer anime, and the characters involved in it are designed to provide foils for the original Kyosouke. The creator of this manga was intelligent enough to use an unorthodox character in conjunction with standard ones in order to bring stability to the show. Overall, it's not of the highest quality but I find it highly enjoyable.
It's better than Whistle!, at least.

same thing over & over again-kyousuke kicks good goals, kyousuke get angry, kyousuke quit team, kyousuke calm himself, kyousuke go back on team, kyousuke scores goa, kyousuke gets hotheaded again & the cycle just keeps going
in sports anime this one is about ok but overall it's not worth it
