| Another very good yet sadly forgotten series , currently overshadowed by the many commercial masterpieces of today.
I'd suggest the viewers taking a break from the current anime and trying to give this series a look. Since it was broadcast in many countries get a dub (VHS, DVD doesnt matter) or get the cheap Taiwanese version by Pimgroup (no bootleg btw, just crappy but understandable English subs) with Japanese/Chinese audio . The Japanese voice actors are even better I think. Live-Evil fansubs are currently on ep 7.
It is really worth and much better than many series I've seen.
If you've seen "The Sound of Music" do not expect the cheerful atmosphere and the sugary characters of the movie since the series remains more faithful to the autobiography of the author albeit with a few alterations like the children's and Maria's age and the addition of various events.
The series covers the books first part, before they move to America. In the book Maria marries at the age of 22 in 1927, while here she marries at the age of 19 just before 1938 (the Baron looks younger too), with the children retaining the age they had in the book in 1927. This makes the series more dramatic in the end. Some events of the books like the meeting with Hitler are very well adapted. Also an event of the second part while they're in America takes place here, like Martina's dangerous play with a pair of scissors.
Notice also that Maria here just like the film has differences with the real Maria. In reality Maria wasnt so mild with the children and spanked them whenever they were disobedient since she didnt believe in progressive education. In the series Maria is less strict and never spanks the children. Here she resembles more Miss Jo in Little Men.
But overall the series adds very succesfully its own padding with some very dramatic episodes , some of which the plot is found already in other Nippon Animation series.
I liked this approach much better than the movie.
Characters, especially the children are superb and while the episodes up to 35 focus on the emotions of the characters and the relations of Maria with the children and the romance between Baron von Trapp and Ivonne, ep 36-40 add also politics (Annexation of Austria by Germany) and represent faithfully (for an animated series that is) the impact the Nazi party had on Austrian society in 1938 and more particularly the Trapp family. The last episodes are totally different in pace and are of the best episodes I've seen. While the rest are also exceptional and some of them are very touching and funny at the same time.
Truly one of the best WMT titles and the most political for that matter
I cant find any flaws in the series except 2-3 not so necessary filler episodes.
Animation and sound are of high quality, considering the fact Nippon Animation couldnt afford to produce 50+ eps per series anymore)
It is amazing how the characters develop from the mistrust the children show to their tutor to the final acceptance as their new parent. From the first to the last episode I was captivated and found this as one of the best and most enjoyable series of its genre.
It is truly a gem in the mud of the current series. I truly pity the younger generation who've missed this title and were forced to make mediocre titles masterpieces because they hadnt anything better to watch in their childhood.
Today I think it would be politically incorrect to show children shouting "Sieg Heil" and a large part of society saluting Nazism. Nazis and their symphatizers here are not portrayed as an evil from above but rather as a situation most people accepted due to false hopes or because they hadnt any other choice. Truly thoughtprovoking and ground breaking for a children's series so that is why I am afraid that today no European broadcaster would dare to broadcast this series again, considering the state of Western and Eastern animation for TV today. And indeed from what I read the last episodes were heavily edited in France or even not broadcasted at all, while in Austria the series faced no problems.
If you can find it watch it and your opinion about anime and the series you're watching now will change.

| This is a really interesting anime which is based on the same book that Sound of Music is based on. If you really like Sound of Music then you will probably like this as well. The advantage of this series compared to the movie is its length. This series has longer time than the movie to include more events and portray the characters to greater details. Although, I feel like the songs in this anime isn't as great as the movie. Overall this is an enjoyable anime for all ages.

| Great anime about a real story, which happend in the 30's in Austria. First i thought it's really weird, because of the character design and the ...ehm...austrich songs.^^"
After many silly episodes and fillers at the beginning, the story changed abrupt. The kinda boring series turns out to be very dramatic, deep and sad. After the Nazis march in to Austria, the family confronted with many problems......in the end they have to abscond of their home land.
