| (C1 anime. Great translation, but Japanese honorifics in the USA of the 20's sound a little odd sometimes)
Yet another title I had no idea was so popular in other countries. What have I been missing while I was forced to watch crap cartoons and TV shows some years ago....That is why I never claim one cartoon series or movie I watched to be the best ever made but only the best I've seen.
Since many shoujo anime series turn popular because they are based on mangas, they actually overlook the novels that inspired those mangas. Daddy Long-Legs must have certainly been one of those novels. So it deserves to be made into an animated series for that reason alone.
An orphan helped by an unknown guardian enters a high-class high school and through many difficulties, scorn from the upper classes and a great deal of romance manages to become a mature woman and meet her guardian in the last episode.
Of course the guardian is known already from the first episode he appears. So do not expect a deep plot. But if you're into romance and also some great characters and a continuing and evolving story then this title will not dissapoint. I didnt expect from a WMT to turn to this genre, but even then it succeeded.
One thing that initially I found would deduct some points was the animation and character design. It is rather unique and somehow it succeeds in making the characters convincing in the interwar USA, though the novel was written in 1912. But overall it is far from perfect but for a 1990's production it is sufficient overall. It certainly will not appeal to all viewers.
The settings (urban, rural, high-school etc) are of high standards for a TV series.
Music is nothing special if you've seen many similar series.
The characters themselves are memorable and develop episode by episode. Judy starts as a 13 year old orphan and ends up as a mature woman. Her two friends the same and while one of them starts as rich and arrogant, turns in the end equally likable. But the same couldnt be said about the male characters and that is the main drawback of this anime because then the ending would have been much better.
The last episodes hadnt somehow the dramatic impact most of the WMT are known for. Some episodes prior to that were very well directed like the first ones, the ones with Leonore and those where Judy had to tutor two brats.
It certainly borrows a lot from Anne of the Green Gables anime in the story and characters but is overall inferior but pretty much superior when compared to similar titles. It looks like a reversed story of Princess Sara too (the last seconds of the series intro are a parody of that intro).
Overall if you like shoujo/romance you should give this a try if it wasnt broadcast in your country or if you had missed it.
Or else you might enjoy it if you put aside for a while your hentai/lolicon collection and focus on the pure heart of the female protagonists.
