| | While visiting her grandparents for a few days, sixth-grader Shiina Tamai goes swimming, and is saved from drowning by a silent, starfish-shaped creature. She names the creature Hoshimaru, and thinks it's the coolest thing ever when Hoshimaru changes shape, lets her climb on, and actually flies! Things get considerably less cool, though, when on the way back home her plane is attacked by a flying, sword-like creature called a Shadow Dragon. Soon Shiina, Hoshimaru, and their new friend Akira find themselves menaced by older children who have pet Shadow Dragons of their own. What do these older children want? Where do the Shadow Dragons come from? And what exactly is Hoshimaru? Shiina doesn't know, but she's up for the challenge of finding out!
