I work out, but i do not body build.
I dont fancy having a body that cant move.
One in my class is a body builder, he cant even move his arms freely.
Thats my definition of a body builder atleast.
You take all that Creatine and steroids (or however it is spelled) too ?
Training to get a fit body is something else. But by all means, if you want to become a brute boy, be my guest.

No i dont bodybuild, i dont like the idea.. ^^
I am training Karate at least 3 times a week 2 hours every time, and that's enough for me... it's good training, keeps me in shape....
But i think there have been a similar thread, something with training, maybe im just out of it.. im not sure.. or we have discussed body building, something like that...
gonna look for it..

Ofcourse man, got to keep the muscles in shape. I do it to stay physically fit for the sports I play. The stronger you are, the better. But remember, while strengthening your muscles you have to keep doing agility exercises or you will lose considerable mobility. I do it a couple times a week depending on my basketball schedule. It's not what I would call fun, but it's a good for your health.

Nope, I don't like gyms and find them utterly boring. Actually, I don't find a muscular body attractive or healthy at all. Sports that train more your flexibility and keep you fit body and soul, like martial arts or swimming, are more my fancy. I used to swim and practice tae-kwon-do but had to stop due to a knee-cap injury. :'( Now I'm just too lazy to restart anything...

I do a bit of exercise at home, and I cycle. That's about it. And at work, I do a lot of walking. I'm a construction worker and I'm building a road + a bridge. Lots of ground to cover (unlike a construction site for a building).

I started going to a gym when I was about 19 and, well, I did that basically for the looks, that is for make it easier with pretty girls . All my friends started the gym for the same reason and actually it was some of them that convinced me to begin. And I tell you the gym was very worth the cost.
But the body health and the "strong" thing are important too.
When I started back then I used to go 5 times a week for about 2/3 hours each time and it was more or less like that for all the university years.
Now I go twice or 3 times a week, about 2 hours.
By the way my wife goes to a gym too, to have her body in the best shape and that is worth too.
For me Football (soccer) is not shit, it is real fun playing it. Tennis too. More than gym. But in a gym you can build your body much better (and in fact professional sports players work out a lot in gyms)

"Real" bodybuilding is just moronic.. Totally useless plus it tends to weaken your heart. I have some friends who have serious problems which started from/got a huge boost from bodybuilding.
But going to the gym every once in a while and keeping yourself fit in other ways is okay.
As I said, I hate bodybuilding as in going to the gym regularly etc. I play tennis regularly. As a hobby, I bicycle, play basketball (and lately volleyball which tbh is rather boring) etc. Just keeping fit is enough.. Being good at only one sport is good for me.

Bodybuilding is a sport, I don't do that sport. I do however excercise at the gym sometimes since I like to work out. Keeping in shape and looking better isn't what interests me, its more like a positive side effect:)
Prefer martial arts and running and such rather than sweating away in a gym filled with gay ppl.

Yea, I don't really do it to socialize or 'have fun'. I find it kinda boring, but without it I would be weak, or at least not so strong.

I do not body build, but I do workout.
I try to get into shape. But since I'm a lazy boy it is hard even to make it to the gym.
I have been considering to begin because it looks nice(to some degree), but I don't want my movabillity to decrease. It takes alot of time, and since I'm a student I actually don't have that much time.

Last year i didn't exercise at all coz I have 2 jobs day time and evening time. But I didn't get fatter coz having 2 jobs on the same day is very energy consuming.. perhaps almost equivalent as workout in the gym.. and I always get home exhausted on Mon - Fri..
This year i still don't know.. but I think I should exercise.. but I won't do bodybuilding.. I teach piano and bodybuilding makes my hands and my wrists tense.. and you are not supposed to be tense when you play piano.

What I love is that gyms and work out facilities charge so much to use their special equipment. All you need is two dumbells and you can work out almost every muscle of the body. Biceps, triceps, chest, back, all of them, even legs. I think people go to gyms and such for other reasons than working out. I mean they go to work out, but something more motivates them like either showing off, or socializing, or etc,

Firstly I always thought Cadd was at the gym everyday. I mean since you were a kid in the santa claus picture, we could tell you were atheletic. LoL, just messing Cadd. Secondly, I can understand pizza and chili in the mircowave, but a candy bar or cookie? Insane.
Anyway, I'm gonna be spending a lot more time at the gym now that my universities sports center has reopened. It was closed because it was demolished by the hurricanes. It was opened in early Jan so now I can hit the weights again,

I don't bodybuild...but I practice martial arts and work out. When I build up my muscles I only do it with natural weights (my weight). Sit-up, push ups...etc. I don't like the muscles you get when bodybuilding. They look like blown-up. I prefer Bruce-lee looking muscles. That's what I'm talking about. Muscles to the bone. xP I practice martial art every second day/everyday.

I go to the gym a lot and love weight lifting . . . when my career isn't preventing from sleeping. The forums at bodybuilding.com and elitefitness are probably the most popular on the net.
If you're interested in getting huge, check out two different systems: HST and DC/Doggcrapp Training. There's two other popular systems, Max-OT and DFHT, but HST and DC training are generally considered the best.
If you're interested in HST, visit the original website and their board. If you're interested in DC, check out the "Muscle Mayhem" board. Those cats on both boards know their stuff. If you're interested in Max-OT, HIT, etc., check out bodybuilding.com A lot of people do Max-OT over there.

bodybuilding.com is a good place for the beginner. In the Workout Programs section, there's a few stickies covering HST, Max-OT, and other systems. It's harder to find comprehensive information on DC because the original creator (Dante/Doggcrapp) didn't write proper articles for it. You can find a "Doggcrapp Training Manual" on the web.
All of the systems are good. However, for a true beginner like yourself, you may just want to learn proper technique, general workout philosophy, DIET, and so on before embarking on any of them.
HST is the easiest, safest, and arguably most effective. Depending on where you are in the program, your workout may be as short as 30 minutes. But, there's some lengthy science-oriented knowledge you need to pick up in order to understand why it works. I favor this one the most.
Max-OT is fun, but it requires the lifter to know how to lift heavy and to failure. You have to get your diet and technique down in order to master this.
And DC is just hard. It's not meant for beginners at all. I like this a lot, but I don't think it's for you.

Good places include . . . (Just google for info. .)
The HST home board
Muscle Mayhem
WannabeBig
Avant Labs
Chemically Enhanced Muscle
And, of course, the misc.fitness.weights newsgroup.

Anything past an hour is catabolic (your body begins to burn muscle as a source of energy). You will always want to stay under an hour for maximum gains.

Genma's right. Training past 60-90 minutes is considered catabolic and generally it means you're doing it all wrong.
Here's the magic formula:
1) Train heavier. Train often.
2) Eat like a horse
3) Deadlifts. Squats. Dips. Chins. These are the Big Four.
4) Periodically take a week to 2-week break.

I don't bodybuild, per se, but my job involves a LOT of lifting and pushing (industrial inventory, woo) so it keeps me thin and I'll probably grow stronger from it, very slowly.
I weight lifted in high school and enjoyed it a lot, but I don't have any friends to be a spotter if I had weights of my own, or went to a gym, so... I don't. Also, being sore from lifting and trying to do my job would not work.
I used to practice tae kwon do, and have been considering getting back into that, lately. It didn't strengthen me so much as give tone and flexibility, and I'm lacking in flexibility.

i just realised something... u guys who train 1 hour a day do u do it the same way as the people on bodybuild.com does? u know, train legs one day and then arms another day etc etc etc?
cus me and my friends train it all each time we're down in the gym... so... is it still too much to use 2-3 hours? its only like 25 minutes on each part when u think about it

That's what they call a "split." There's two different ways to plan out your schedule: "full-body" (which is what you've been doing) or "split." There's pro/con with both approaches.
I prefer full-body most of the time, because I think splits encourage people to do a lot of exercises that won't make a difference except burn calories. What matters are compound-joint movements like deadlifts, squats, dips, rows, chins, or their machine equivalents. NOT curls, extensions, crunches and 10,000 sets of pulldowns. Also, you want to train a bodypart frequently (at least 3 times a week) in order to make it grow a lot. Don't need to beat the crap out of the bodypart, just do enough to make it grow.
You may want to pick up a book to teach you the basics. What's a set, rep, split, compound, isolation, diet, etc.

Ah, I wouldn't speak too much about training a bodypart more than once a week until he has put in a lot of hours in the gym because he'll probably end up overtraining badly.
Stick to working out one specific area each work-out for a while until you have a grasp of what your body is capable of. You'll probably end up going 3-4 times a week with a split like this;
Mon - Legs
Wed - Back
Fri - Chest
Sun - Shoulders
And then you simply repeat the process.
Wait until you've put in about 3 or so months into weightlifting until you begin to delve into more advanced forms of lifting.
By the way, practicing your form is of paramount importance as it will make or break you. Lifting heavy weights without proper form will result in injuries and bad gains.

It doesn't matter. You should only train for an hour at most.

Quote: Ah, I wouldn't speak too much about training a bodypart more than once a week until he has put in a lot of hours in the gym because he'll probably end up overtraining badly.
I think starting with full-body is worthwhile because he'll learn to keep the volume down and prioritize the big movements over the single-joint stuff.
Personally, I think you should start with a HIT program. I disagree with most of the theory, but it's a good way to introduce you to proper form, workout design, anatomy, fiber types, diet, a lot of the basic workout terminology, etc. Although he's a machine guy, Ellington Darden (who is a HIT devotee) does a good job teaching the basics, and there's plenty of internet resources (such as the HIT FAQ.)
When you've done that for 4-6 months, then you can explore the more advanced programs like Max-OT, DFHT, HST, DC, or some funky conjugated periodized program.
