Ending... just my opinion considering that the story just ended in the anime series and neglecting the manga books... hmm.. I would like to share my opinion:
Warning Spoiler!!!
WARNING WARNING WARNING WARNING
(Spoiler and hunches )
Ending conclusion(s):
I think that the teacher who tried committing suicide, gave himself a second chance. The students sympathized and trusted him again, and therefore he started teaching again--replacing Onizuka's class.
Onizuka was no longer needed since he united the whole class with the old homeroom teacher, and he gave confidence back all his students to trust teachers and also adults. Of course, he went all the way to America in order to escape his so called "criminal acts." But I think, part of it is a way of making an excuse of doing more great deeds to other students who need help and confidence in school, especially motivating them to trust teachers and solving their problems.
What a great teacher.. well except that he is perverted, violent and stupid sometimes but funny.
I think this is the most logical answer that I can conclude about the ending.

I agree with that, I felt that the story was about why the class was so bad and that was answered in the end and resolved. I had no problem w/ the end.

I still dont think that is a plausible answer.
Why did Onizuka leave the school behind? Your assumptions may be correct, but I doubt that teacher (guy who got stabbed) really came back to teach that same class.
I get the part that Onizuka brought back unity and all, WHY DID HE LEAVE!!!! AWAHAHWA!!

Let's imagine the anime continued. If Onizuka would have stayed, I think there would be less interesting things that happened. He would just sit there everyday, trying to teach something from the books that he doesn't know himself. After all, the students are smarter than him. However, he has taught them what living is, and it doesn't involve hating adults and losing trust. He's done his role, so while his leaving is heartbreaking, its something inevitable.
I also doubt that the teacher came back to teach their class. It is possible, but I think his role was mostly there to fix Miyabe's situation, and to get to the heart of the problem. It doesn't really matter who their next teacher is anyway.
I guess all we can imagine is will Onizuka be a teacher for another class? Do the same thing? I'd love to see more of his adventures with various situations. But with that particular class at Holy Forest Academy, too many things have gone on that anymore would be beyond excessive. I personally will keep imagining what Onizuka will do in the future, love this anime a lot
