I think it just means, society would crush you hard, since you start living together openly (remember, they announced it on a tree). Even the comment about cutting it -- "the majority disapproves". Anyway I am backed up with manga (finished later, to clear the point)... Koushirou says "I heard they are going to cut the trees" and Nanoka replies "does not matter, we would come back even if the trees would be gone". So it is imho a happy ending of some kind.
