 Toradora!
A gem of an anime! ;)

Has anyone seen the anime "Toradora!"?

I've been on an anime hiatus apart from watching the odd Naruto and One Piece (not an anime series but a lifestyle! XD), and I happened to come across this relatively short series: "Toradora!"

Toradora! is a high school romance/relationship drama. The story talks about a small group of high school friends and how their relationships evolve and intertwine. Underlying this is the main relationship between main male protagonist Takasu Ryuuji ("Ryuuji") and the cute but dangerous female protagonist Aisaka Taiga ("Taiga") and how their relationship develop from simple friendship into something much more! XD

The series has an extremely strong sense of place, in particular the atmosphere of the high school and homes. Viewers are treated to a yearlong experience of what a typical Japanese high school student would go through. We see the main characters partake in their annual school cultural festival, summer vacation, a skiing field trip, and so on. As episode rolls on more and more of what the characters are about are revealed. The pace is well set.

There are some parts of the series that I found to be a bit lacklustre and maybe a bit strange. The music selection for the first OP may put some viewers off (it certainly did a bit for me). I found that the first OP didn't really establish the true mood of what the anime was about. The main melancholy theme of the music seemed a bit too techno to me and the scale that ran up and down created unnecessarily wonder/tension.

Also IMHO it would have had been better if the series delved into each of the character's backgrounds a bit more. Even Ryuuji and Taiga's history were only slightly revealed near the end of the series. Questions in regards to Minori's thriftiness and Ami's split personality remain throughout. But the flipside to this is that it allows viewers to let their imaginations wander as to these characters' stories and also helps to not digress from the core relationship between Ryuuji and Taiga.

I recommend the series who may have perhaps experienced a high school/university relationship dilemma. A dilemma such as a love triangle or simply a good friendship developing into a romance. I also recommend Toradora! for younger viewers who believe they are too mature for simple action anime and yearn for something more plain yet heartfelt.

This is a good anime series to remind ourselves to cherish our friends and put in some effort to discover more about them; to dig deeper and realise their true thoughts, that is, if you believe them to be truly a good friend.

To sum up! "Toradora!" is a not-too-intense emotional rollercoaster. Nice setting. Pretty good music overall. Easily associable characters with gradual, well-paced and balanced character development.

Overall, I rate it: 7/10! ^^

What did you guys think of the series? =)

edit: Watching toradora, when I started watching it, it didn't particularily grab me, and seemed tired in its plot line, still, I stuck with it, and eventually towards the end, I ended up enjoying it overall.
