 Anime Category Additions

Hey, this is my first time posting here, so I thought I should take a moment to say that I love this site and have been using it for quite some time. It really is a huge benefit for all anime/manga fans world wide.

I'm posting here today because I would like to see some additional categorization built into the website, which I feel would really benefit the whole community.

The first idea, which I really wanted to see when I first found this site but never got around to posting, is a top 50 anime in each genre. For example, all anime with an 'action' genre tag would be listed by rank from 1-50. There would likewise be a ranking page for each genre. I know that there are already genre-specific pages sorted by alphabet, why not allow them to be sorted/listed by rank as well? As another example, GTO is currently ranked 17th on the top 200 list, but would easily claim #1/#2 under comedy. This is just a simple example, but think of other anime ranked 50+ or not even on the top 200 that could easily make a top 50 genre-specific list, yet it is difficult for fans of that genre to find that a true gem without this feature.

The other idea I had was inspired by the recent addition (or at least my recent notice) of a new feature on Fandango. It now lets you filter movies by age-bracket. I thought this would be an excellent way to find reviews (and possibly even rankings?) from users in your own age bracket. I find that a lot of times there are extremely differing opinions posted about an anime and it's sometimes difficult to understand how or why those reviews clash so much. This would help give viewers in different age brackets access to more reasonable reviews/ratings based on their peers.

A clear extension to my second idea would be to also provide a genre-relevance scale to each reviewer. The basic gist would be to possibly track the number of reviews a user has posted on anime/manga from any given genre and use those totals to calculate the relevance of that users review to a specific genre. Or perhaps it could be a combination of genres from his review history and his anime/manga list? Then perhaps divide this number by the total number of their reviews/favorites list, or perhaps by the total number of anime in that category, to derive the users score for each genre. This one just came to me recently, and may some additional though, but I'm sure you get the idea behind it.

I would really, really, like to see the first idea go through. I think this would be one of the single greatest updates to the site. And keep up the good work; I'd be lost without this site Smile

If you really wish such functions, please post your reviews, especially for anime that not so many people have reviewed yet. We need at least 40 reviews for each title.

Implementing such functions is not a big deal. But I don’t think the statics is useful.
As you can see, there are only 195 titles that satisfy the lower limit (40 reviews) currently now. If we divide them into pieces, we have only a few titles or none for minor genres.

Ah, I wasn't aware of that. I suppose that is why the top 200 only goes up to 195...

Well then, I wonder if there is a way to promote reviews and also boost knowledge of the titles that don't meet the minimum 40 review requirement? Correct me if I'm wrong, but there doesn't really seem like a good way to find these titles; at least, not that I've seen.

Why not try adding two additional lists, "Top up and coming anime" and "Unreviewed anime", and placing links to these under the "Top 200 anime" list?

For "Top up and coming anime" it could be a list of all anime titles with 1->40 reviews, possibly sortable by avg. rating and number of reviews? Once the anime reaches the 40 review mark, it's no longer eligible to be on the "up and coming" list, but is now eligible for the "top 200 list". This could help generate more reviews, since titles with only 1 review, say of all 10s, could jump to/near the top and be noticed quickly. This should in turn generate more reviews for that title.

And the "Unreviewed anime" would simply be a list of anime titles that have yet to be reviewed.

These are just some ideas to try and promote user reviews / newer titles, essentially giving the user base a broader range of anime titles to look through. Not that you can't already search for titles, but these are more geared towards finding anime you don't already know about / that are not already well reviewed.

Cheers.

what you really need to do is make it so anime match shows all the matching anime, not just the first 100. Then make it so you can organize the list by rank on the top 200 list, or by reverse alphabetical, or starting date, etc.

Ok, enough is enough. Animenfo really needs gender and age categories/filters added to the sight!

I am tired of having to filter through reviews that where obviously written by 12 year old kids. Not to mention seeing these same reviewers rate kiddie shows so high, while down rating more adult oriented shows. It is becoming more and more difficult to find anime that appeals to my age/gender bracket.

For example, Full Moon does not deserve to be ranked at #4 on the top 200 list. There is absolutely no reason why this should be ranked so high, other than it must have a lot of underage female fans. Now I'm not saying the show was bad, possibly worthy of a 7ish rating, but its current rating/standing is rediculous.

Please, make it easier for users to find and rank anime in their own age and gender brackets.
