Well, so that people don't think I've given completely up on Anfo: Wink

Name: Hirad Coldheart
Sex: Male
Age: 36

Occupation: Large corporate owner. He has built his own business empire out of nothing, and the reason for his success is his belief in a business model where you do a lot of different things and don't specialize in one thing. (for instance, if he owned Mcdonalds, he can one day say; "Hey, let's start a fishing company while we're at it.")
Personality: Hard working, but a bit arrogant because of his success. He's also a leader type that don't like to be bossed around.
Background: He has been in the military and at a private university, but right now he just lives a laid back life and works from home.
Skills/knowledge
Basic martial arts defence such as Judo and some kickboxing.
University education in economics and in business leadership.

Other than that, he's a nice guy, though he has been single for a couple of months. He gets toghether with a tight group of friends quite often, and they still do much of the fun stuff they did in their twenties. In other words, you could say that these guys still hasen't grown up.

Have fun Wink

Character sheet before I head out for Vegas.

Name: Maya Crocket
Sex: Female
Age: 22

Occupation: Full time college student.
Personality: Sharp tounge, blunt, reckless, sarcastic in most cases, but when needed tends to be serious and straight to the point. She also tends to be very manipulative when it benefits her the most... being vocal or otherwise.

Special Skills:

1. Athletic. Strong. She has no trouble carrying or lifting heavy objects. Can run pretty fast, jump pretty high, very nimble, and can swim.
2. Communication. She can tell you just about anything and make it sound convincing. Often used to her advantage (again...very manipulative)
3. Adaptivity. She can adapt to just about any living condition in a very short amount of time.

Weakness:

1. Lightning. Can't stand. Plain and simple. Simply scares her to tears if she's caught in the rain.

2. Short term memory. She would forget her head if she could take it off and lay it on the ground. She also tends to be easily distracted.

Will we be able to collect newbie heads?
Can someone translate that into normal english?

How is the sentence in question incorrect? Expound it, please.
I am not familiar with the term "newbie head". How do you collect heads on-line? What is the significance of a newbie? New at what?

collecting newbie heads was a well established tradition on animenfo back in the days. From what I recollect the first to embark on collecting the heads was Malaki, who started the previous (unsuccessful) role playing game, which turned out to be just about taking the heads off.

I was pretty good at it ;]

Man, I'd love to start that up again and keep it alive - it's just a ton of work. D:

Here's mine.

Name: Zengar Stormbolt
Age: 24
Sex: Male
Occupation: Engineer (Civil and Mechanics)

Background:
Worked for a consulting firm for a couple of years before being recruited into a weapons manufacture/development government body for his expertise. Well-versed in all sorts of weapons/equipment but specialises in firearms and traps.

Personality:
Due to his work nature, he shys away from people and rarely talks if not spoken to. Calm demeanor and doesn't let small things in life bother him (except the small details in his work).

Strengths:
1. Aside from weaponry, also knowledgeable in modern day technology regarding civil structures and mechanical objects.
2. Good in logistics and seldom gets lost.

Weaknesses:
1. Physic of an average man. Not military-trained and can't operate heavy firearms very well (get blown away by the recoil and probably misses the target 90% of the time)
2. Low perception. Not aware of happenings in surroundings until 3 seconds later.

Is Supra going to join us?

Anyway, I plan on launching the game this weekend. So, for those who have not done so yet, hurry up with the character sheets.

By the way, has anyone else seen the 1st ep of Highschool of the Dead?

I'd already included this... So yeah.

SupraGuy (#92823) :
:
Name:Dan Masato
Gender: Male
Age: 26
Occupation: OS developer

Personality: Prone to manic episodes, ie: being reckless and spontaneous, but is usually pretty reserved, and thinks things through before leaping into them (Lessons learned from past mistakes!) Likes good music, fast cars

Special skills:
1. profficient in various martial arts, including Karate, Judo, Kendo, and Kung-fu. Multiple black belts. (Unarmed combat and use of swords, knives, staff. Owns protective gear including body armor)
2. General mechanical and electronic knowledge. (Need to hotwire a car? I'm your guy.)
3.Profficient in first aid, particularly when it comes to sprains and broken bones.
4. Computer hacking/cracking (Pretty good chance that I can get you into an otherwise locked system, though not a certainty.)
5. Driving. Can probably drive about anything with wheels and make it go where I want it to.

Weaknesses:
1. Guns. Can't use 'em, probably more dangerous to the people on my own side with one. Expect that if given one I'd probably use it as a bludgeoning weapon.
2. Acrophobia. Anything higher than about 10' above ground and movement will be slowed (Hopefully faster than a zombie, but not much. Will stay away from edges of high places is at all possible.
3. Organisation. I'm not.

Background:
Collect and restore cars for a hobby. Live with my wife and pre-school aged daughter. Wife is extremely good at organisation, which is a good thing, since I'm definitely not. If it needs planning, she does it.

That's kind of like me... 14 years ago. Wink

It started out as a normal lunch hour for Jerard. He had decided to walk across the street to the Malton Mall for lunch together with his colleague, Matt. The two had picked up their orders from the McDonald's counter on the 3rd floor and had just settled into their chairs to eat. The scream started even before Jerard took his first bite.

Looking to his left, over the railing, he had a view of the central concourse. From whence the scream originated, Jerard sees two figures contorting just within the main entrance. It seems as if a man had assaulted a woman. It doesn't register now, but he would recall later that, from his peripheral view, he noticed that everyone else in sight was also frozen in shock and surprise.

Two security guards appear and dragged the unknown assailant off his victim, straddling his back and restraining his arms. One of them shouts something to a third who appears to be reporting into his radio while he bends down to help the victim.

The victim appears to sit up and embraces the security guard trying to help her, but he is then heard screaming in pain for some reason. Before anyone could make sense of what's happening, the glass doors to the parking lot slides open and more people pounce onto the other two security guards, whose screams soon join that of their colleague's. From outside, even more figures can be seen shambling this way.

Someone must've panicked at this point, because bedlam followed, with people shouting, screaming, pushing, running, tripping and falling. Jerard saw Matt go over the railing before going down himself. He must've blacked out then, because the next thing Jerard knew, he was picking himself up off the floor, feeling a receding pain at the back of his head. There was no movement around him, nor anywhere as far as he could see on this level. However, glancing over the railing, he could see many shambling figures, lots of blood, and a number of fallen bodies. In horror he watched as first one, and then another, of the "bodies" get back up and stumble off, seemingly ignoring their injuries and their assailants.

(OOC: OOC means out of context. Use this for explanatory notes or random chitchat at the end of the story post. The RP has now begun. Everyone is welcome to post whenever he/she is free. By the way, Matt is dead. Broke his neck and some other stuff during the fall. Since he died before the zombies got to him, they had no interest in him, so he won't be rising.)

Dan had his lunch to go that day, he hated the food court at the mall, always picturing falling from that (in his mind) unsafe railing by the 3 storey drop into the atrium. There seemed to be an unusual amount of drunks in the parking lot for the time of day, he could see a couple of them bothering a driver by the parking lot ramp. "Must be begging for change, he thought. He turned back to his sandwich and did not see the one bite the driver through his open window.

Then the panic began. People started boiling out of the mall entrance. Logic fought with curiosity. It was a valliant battle, but with a lack of smoke or the sound of weapons fire, logic was hopelessly out-matched. He left the sandwich, and headed towards the mall entrance. The throng leaving the mall seemed to have abated somewhat, in fact the third floor parkade entrance was deserted by the time he got there.

The scene inside was astounding. Packages lay abandonded, unheeded strewn across the floor, and between tables, covered with greasy fried foodstuffs and colourful conmdiments. A few people appeared to be wounded, and Dan could see one woman who had apparently bled out through the carotid artery and two people who appeared to be trampled. He hurried on, towards what appeared to be the center of the panic. His cell phone only got a "network busy" error. A chill ran up his spine. He turned to see the woman, covered in blood stand up and start stumbling towards him. He backed up in horror. She followed.

Suddenly, he realised that he was backed up against the rail, and she was still coming. She fell, more than leapt at him. He sidestepped and a reflexive strike knocked the woman aside. She teetered for a moment, then fell headlong over the railing. Dan looked over the railing, and wished that he hadn't, for two reasons. First, the view from that far up gave him severe vertigo, and second, the floor below was covered in blood and bodies. He noted the woman getting to her feet with an arm, obviously broken in several places hanging limply by her side.

Rational thought abandonded him. He did a quick scan of the area for more of these freaks. The two trampled bodies were still down. A medium built man was down next to the rail, over by the McDonalds, and a kid in a hairnet was under a toppled sign, the sign seemed to have smashed the kid's skull. Dan swallowed hard to keep from vomiting, and ran for the exit, and his car...

Hirad woke up, a throbbing pain in his skull pretty much the only thing he managed to register at first. "Damn," he thought, "I knew I should have abandoned the ship earlier than 6 in the morning," referring to his late Captain Morgan yesterday. As always, he turned on the television to follow the news, only today there was no news to watch. In fact, all the channels he tried were dead. Although this puzzled Hirad, his head wouldn't let him think of any possible reasons for the TV to not work.

After a long shower and 2 aspirins, Hirad finally went outside of his medium sized house in the middle of a, in some sense, upper class street. The first thought that hit him was not how or why a car was crashed into his highly awarded and priceless tree, not even the fact that there were no driver to be seen even though the car was wrecked, the only thing he was staring at was the huge wave of people walking the street. "What in the world is going on? There should be less than three people at home at this hour, not 150."

Then he noticed something he would never forget for the rest of his life. All but a handful of the people in the street were moving towards a mother and her child. They, screaming, the people just kept coming closer, encircling them, never slowing down. No one even seemed to have second thoughts about what they were doing. Hirad stood and watched for a microsecond before he yelled out, "Hey! Stop this madness!" A chill worse than anything he had ever experienced before went down his spine as all eyes turned to look at him. Only these eyes were not the eyes of the living, these were cold, dead eyes. For the first time since Hirad had walked out of his house, he looked closer at the people in the street. Almost every one of them had some kind of injury and not one of them were without blood on their clothes.

As Hirad kept watching, the mother and child were reached by the first people. He looked away as the blood splattered in their faces.

OOC: This was actually much more fun than I first thought it would be. Too bad I had so much to do this week that I forgot to check in. Oh well, thanks cranston Wink

The sound of a crash drew Jerard's gaze to his right. A zombie, probably someone's grandmother a few minutes ago, had knocked over a postcard stand, and was now scrabbling around on the floor.

I mean, if this ain't a zombie, I don't know what is! I wonder if they follow Romero rules? Jerard thought to himself as he turned for the nearest exit. However, before even taking a step, the sound of screeching tyres and metal crashing causes him to cringe. In front of him, a guy whose clothes absolutely scream IT nerd stumbles back through open portal he had only vacated moments ago. He glances around and makes eye-contact with Jerard. "Exit's blocked!" he mutters.

Jerard glances to the side once more, drawing the other guy's gaze, to see the zombie coming their way. Drawn by the noise maybe? The two humans re-establish eye contact, come to an unconscious agreement and hightail it the other way.

"I'm Jerard." Jerard huffs between breaths.

"Dan."

The two suddenly skid to a stop. Before them was an escalator. Unfortunately, another one of "them" was coming up it. As the two hesitated, it reached their level...

...and tripped.

Before it could right itself, another one rides the escalator up, stumbles over the first, and falls on it.

"Shit. This way."

Dan grabs Jerard by the arm and pulls him towards the end of the mall.

"That's a dead end, there's no exit there!" Jerard.

"Right, but since we'll need to get down at least one level, we need weapons. Theres a surplus shop this way."

A couple of teenagers were cowering behind an advertisement, with panic in their eyes. The four looked each other over, obviously uncertain if the others were attackers. The two teens introduced themselves first.

"I'm David, and this is Shawna."

"Dan."

"Jerard. You two okay?"

Shawna still had that edge of panic in her voice "What ARE those anyway? They can't REALLY be..." she gulped, "Zombies, right?"

Jerard answered her "I think we're best off treating it that way."

Dan wasn't paying attention, he was going through the display case in the shop. He grabbed several combat knives, and took the Katana from the display window. Pulling it out of it's scabbard he frowned, then tossed it aside. He then used one of the combat knives to hack through the door on a locked case. Inside were several long boxes. Dan started going through them.

Jerard looked at David's arm. An angry looking bruise on the forearm was just visible from under the shirt. David saw him looking. "One of those bastards bit at me while I was pushing him away, but it's just a bruise."

The three joined Dan in the shop, rummaging through the stock. Dan seemed to have found what he was looking for, a long sword. Jerard noticed that he had paid no attention at all to the gun case. "Odd. I though he said that he was looking for weapons..." A quick search yielded a pair of 9mm handguns and a hefty sized box of bullets. He offered one of the guns to Dan, who shook his head.

Jerard turned to offer the gun to David, and stopped. David had passed out. Shawna was bending over him, looking worried. She barely had time to scream as David grabbed her and took the first bite...

OOC: "Just a bruise" in this case must have broken skin, in keeping with the rules, but Jerard may not know that, and Dan doesn't (yet) know that he was bitten. Current location: near the end of a dead-end wing of the mall with a couple of zombies in the store, and at least 3 more between them and any sort of route out.

OOC: David's infection seemed a bit too fast for me. It did not contravene rule 5,
:
5. Humans who are bitten but not killed immediately die from virus infection within an hour. The dead reanimate within one minute. (Yes, this is fast. But cool!) Only humans are affected, but zombies will attack animals as well.

but suddenly keeling over seems like that was a bit odd to me. He should've spent more time dying. Although, it could be handwaved that Jerard and Dan missed the signs of infection (fever, sweat, etc) in the heat of the moment. Or maybe he was vomiting blood earlier before we met up? Or maybe David was undergoing chemotherapy and his immune system was shot. Or something. Was this what you had in mind Supra? Or dropping dead? You introduced this element, so you get to clarify.

By the way, where're all the other players?

@vulcan
Dan and I are going to be awhile in this mall, so you're going to have to hang loose until we get out of here and you find a way to join up with us. Go ahead and make up your own story in the meantime.

OOC Clarification: Yeah, Jerard/Dan were preocupied, and missed signs that Davey was pretty damned sick. Neither one noticed him collapse either, being maybe a bit hyperfocused on getting armed, mental inventory of how to get out, etc. should have added more cues in the storyline, sorry.

And yeah, we're not getting out of this place anytime soon. Hopefully one of the other characters is hiding out in a nearby store? Wink Or who knows, maybe one is Hirad's neighbor...

The sight of Shawna being savaged before him causes Jerard to freeze in shock and horror. Her scream is cut short as what-used-to-be David bit into her jugular. Shawna dies as arterial spray drenches the immediate area. Some of it falls towards Jerard who instinctively hops back out of the way. However, the back of his foot catches on something and he lands hard on his hip. Despite the pain, Jerard's yelp died stillborn in his throat as his body froze up in terror, for ex-David was now looking roughly in his direction.

It seemed to Jerard that they stayed in that frozen tableu for minutes, when, in actual fact, perhaps mere heartbeats had passed, when ex-David burst into motion, crawling with uncanny speed towards Jerard. This time, Jerard did let out a yelp, as adrenaline flooded his system and he scrabbled backwards. Still, ex-David easily closed the distance. Just as ex-David grabbed a hold of Jerard's ankle, Dan stepped forward, smoothly swinging his sword down and severing ex-David's head from its shoulders.

The head bounced twice before coming to a stop. Despite not being attached to the rest of its body, the head still refuses to die. It lay there, snapping its jaws ineffectually. Taking care to avoid its teeth, Jerard gingerly kicked it away.

(OOC: Welcome, Deigo!)

OOC: Yeah, you have fun in the mall. I was actually hoping I could get some alone time before I met the others. Wink

Back to the story:
The door slammed shut and Hirad leaned heavily on it. What in the world is going on!? People eating other people? Hirad didn't get to think any further before he felt the first push at the door. *Bang!..........Bang! Bang! Bang!* He could feel the door giving in more for each push, and still he could do nothing to move, his legs frozen in terror.

A sudden sound of glass shattering brought him back, and in a matter of seconds, Hirad had run from the door to the second floor of the house. Where is it!? He searched his bedroom frantically, in need of a weapon. It wasn't until the first person, probably the one breaking the window, stood in the door that Hirad realized his mistake. He had run into a closed space with only a window and one door, and he hadn't even closed and locked the door.

The person standing in the door looked dead ahead, even though Hirad was at the far right of the room, as if blind. Then Hirad saw it. Leaning against the wall behind a couple of boxes, his old baseball bat was in between the person and himself. Before Hirad knew it, he had taken a Judo roll, grabbing the baseball bat as his fluent motion continued until he was at his feet again. The person in the door reacted immediately as he heard Hirad land on the floor, and started to move his way, arms outstretched. Another kick of adrenaline and Hirad leaped at the person while ducking under his arms, aiming for the legs with the bat. The first swing hit home, and the person fell hard to the floor, his balance not able to keep him upright. Hirad looked around and realized this was his only chance. He hesitated a moment, before he ran towards his living room.

The sword dropped from Dan's nerveless fingers. A blank look came over his face as the shock of what he had done by instinct hit him with full force.

Jerard's eyes narrowed suspiciously, "Dan! Hey come on back, man! Did you get bit?" His hands closed on the 9mm, and he held it at a ready position.

"I've never... killed. Not anything." The words were in a shocky monotone

"Get a grip on yourself! If it makes you feel any better, I don't think that you've killed anything now, either." Jerard could still see the gruesome sight of the head's jaws still working. "Did you get bitten? Is there any blood on you?"

A little bit of light came back to Dan's face. "Huh? No, this sword is sharp, it should have been" he gulped, "a clean cut. Is Shawna..."

"Dead? For now, but listen, David said that he'd been bitten, and then he bit her..."

As if on cue, Shawna's corpse rose to a seated position. The 9mm cracked once, twice, and neat holes appeared in her skull. A small trickle of blood came out of the lower of the two, and the corpse toppled over in slow motion.

Carefully, Jerard stepped over the headless corpse which Dan was still staring at to check on his target. "Huh. This one died."

"Jerard, look. That body was moving when I took it's head off, but there's no spray. That means that there was no beating heart. What the hell ARE these things?"

"Zombies. It seemed like it before, but this pretty much clinches it. That's what," he jestured towards the corpses on the floor, "I told them I thought it was, anyway."

"What do we do about that?" Dan asked, indicating the head.

Jerard answered with another gunshot. The head rolled over, and was still. The noise seemed to attract attention. Two more zombies shuffled into the store.

Jerard raised his gun, but Dan motioned to him for silence. "More outside," he whispered.

The whisper brought both zombie heads to focus right where they were standing. Dan and Jerard looed at one another and came to a silent agreement. Jerard picked up a steel bar and crept to the left. Dan gripped his sword and went right...

OOC: Welcome, Diego! Now we need other players to show up! Where are you guys?

OOC: Sorry Cran. I recently got a new job so I'm trying not to slack off too much in the first few weeks. My posts will be a bit short for the mean time.

It was a bright sunny day and Zengar had an unusual day-off. Seizing on this opportunity, he reached for his mobile phone and rang up his best friend for a day out.

Marumaru-kun "Hello?"
Zengar "Morning Vlad."
Vladimir "Morning Zee-man, what can I do for you today?"
Zengar "Are you free today? I'm thinking of going to the hunting/outdoor store at the mall to check the new imports. I heard they got some new survival equipment from Germany."
Vladimir "What a coincidence! I'm at the mall already. What time are you coming over?"
Zengar "I got some errands to run so I'll probably meet you there for lunch.
Vladimir "Sure. Meet up at clock tower inside the mall at lunchtime then. See ya!"

Zengar got off the phone and proceed with his daily chores around the house (Neat freak). After tidying everything at home, Zengar grabbed his knapsack and headed off to the local shops to pick up some groceries and pay his bills at the post office. There wasn't much of a crowd as the locals prefer the mall rather than the run-down blocks on a hot day. Just when Zengar was about to cash out, the guy at the register whispered at the bottom of his voice "Stay clear of the mall..." This cause Zengar to raise his eyebrows but nothing more.

By the time Zengar got back home, it was almost time to head out to the mall. Zengar doesn't like being called tardy so he swiftly made his way to the mall. Zengar pulled up into a parking spot outside the mall as he preferred the avoid the usual crowd.

As Zengar locked his car and turned his head towards the mall, loud screams rang through the air and wave after wave of customers bolted out the exits of the mall.

Doesn' take Zengar much thought to realise that something is amiss...

This could be dangerous, Jerard thought to himself. The slightest scratch could be fatal. We should be taking them out from a distance!

However, the fact is that if more of them do come, the chances of escaping unscathed would probably go down from slim to none. Jerard had little confidence in his marksmanship at anything over 10 feet away. The cops at the range he usually goes to with Carrol are trained to aim at center mass, that is, the middle of the target's torso. Double-tapping a target's head is something done only by Hollywood movie stars and Tom Clancy Rainbow troopers.

The zombie duo shuffled closer to Dan and time was running out. They seem to be blind, but attracted to sounds. Maybe Jerard could safely blindside one zombie, but Dan would have to face the other head-on. If Jerard missed...

Wait a minute... Sounds?

An idea struck Jerard. Carefully, he reached into his pocket and quietly extracted a quarter and a dime which he had received as change from McDonald's before this mess had started. Both coins sailed past the zombies and landed bouncing with clear ringing tones. As the two zombies twirled around at the sound, both Jerard and Dan leapt forward.

Jerard swung the bar down hard, connecting with a clear crunch on the back of his target's skull. However, due to the jostle resulting from the impact, the lack of a grip on his weapon, and Jerard's sweaty palms, he lost his hold on the bar, and the clattering noise it made when it landed was even louder than the sound the zombie made when it collapsed.

Growing increasingly desperate, Jerard looked around once more for options and spotted it in a recessed alcove. A door to an emergency staircase. An option, but one which could be a deathtrap should they encounter any zombies in there.

Let's see... Gonna basically be, well, me!

:

Name: Robert Zitch
Gender: Male
Age: 30
Occupation: Web Programmer (Fear my PHP and AJAX skillz, z0|\/|B|3z!)

Personality: Though he is generally friendly around people he doesn't know, he can become sarcastic when stressed. Generally introverted, he might come off as a bit of a loner and aloof at first glance. He generally lets others take leadership roles, though he can and will take leadership if he sees the need to. Thanks to many years of refereeing, he knows how to project an authoritative voice when he needs to, but he normally speaks quietly as the situation allows. He is prone at getting excited about his interests once he opens up to someone, though.

Skills:
- Interests in guns means he is proficient with handling and shooting small arms. Knows how to strip and clean most modern semi-auto handguns, his Mossberg shotgun, and his .22 rifles; he has never learned to disassemble other long-arms, especially military rifles, but would be a quick learner due to his general knowledge and study of guns. Even then he will be able to pick up almost any standard military rifle and quickly figure out how to load and unload the magazine, chamber a round, and operate the safety. His general exercise with his handguns would be to draw from a holster, point-shoot double-tap to the chest, followed by a iron-sight aimed shot to the center of the head.
- Though he will be turned into minced-meat by a real sword user, he has enough knowledge and training of swords usage to know how to draw and swing one without cutting himself. I'm sure we're not going to be facing master swordman zombies...
- Hockey playing and weight-lifting in his late teens and early twenties gave him a large amount of upper-body strength. He would probably do more damage with a longer weapon like a staff... or a hockey stick... Wink
- In a sudden life-threatening emergency, he can get into a hyper-focused mode; his thinking becomes extremely clear, fast, highly analytical. Motor control becomes very fine, and visual and audio perceptions become very acute. He becomes almost immune to shock and pain while in this mode.

Weaknesses:
- Unfortunately, after that hyper-focused mode comes the crash. Once the immediate emergency is over and things are calm enough for the adrenaline to come down, anything that would have normally shocked him would come rushing to the fore-front. Will often start uncontrollable shaking that will take tens of minutes to slowly fade away. If he was severely injured, passing out on the crash wouldn't be out of the question.
- Hockey playing in his late teens and early twenties also did damage to his knees; in addition, his work gave him much less time to work out as much as he used to. He can lightly jog well enough for several miles, but extended full runs will pretty much force him off his legs for days and cause him pain for weeks.

Equipment:
These are what he has with him at the start. He was planning on going to the gun range this day...
- Car - 4 Door 2003 Honda Accord

-- In trunk of car: (basically, starting with these... Smile )

--- Pump-action shotgun: Mossberg 500 /w 18.5" barrel, modified with an M4-style extend-able stock /w 5 shell holder and a red-dot sight.
----- Tube magazine holds 5 shells. Moderate amount of time to completely reload- about 7 seconds for Rob.
----- Red-dot sight zeroed for slugs at 25 yards.
----- Max effective range with rifled slugs would probably be 75 yards; much beyond that, the slug drop and drift will be too far to reliability hit a head-sized target. Rob's realistic range with the red-dot sight and standing and a "gaitly moving" target would be 25 yards with slugs and 00 buckshot. (At around 20 yards, the shot spread for the Mossberg is around 20" for 00 buckshot. You're still likely to get at least one shot in the center of head area if you put the red-dot sight right on the head of a zombie)

--- Semi-auto rifle: Marlin 60 .22 w/ 3x-9x scope, zeroed at 75 yards.
---- Tube magazine holds 14 rounds of .22LR. Takes some time to reload, approximately 15 seconds in a hurry for Rob.
---- Max effective range is around 100 yards for Rob. An excellent shooter who can account for the drop might be able to extend that to 150 yards, but the velocity of the round might be iffy at that range.

--- Semi-auto rifle: Savage Arms 187N .22
---- Tube magazine holds 16 rounds of .22LR. Time to reload similar to Marlin 60.
---- Same bullet ballistics as the Marlin, but with the iron sights, Rob is good to 25 yards with a still head-sized target, and to 10 yards with a target moving at a gait laterally to him.

--- Bokken - Given to him by a friend to practice with. For some reason, Rob leaves it in the trunk...

--- Backpack with the following items: (Reference pic)
---- Semi-auto handgun: Beretta 92FS 9mm
----- 1 32-round magazine
----- 4 15-round magazines, 2 fully loaded
----- Rob can reliably hit a still head-sized target at 10 yards, and a moving target at 7 yards with this gun.
----- Bianchi M12 holster
----- pointer-release holster
----- thumb-snap holster

---- Semi-auto handgun: Springfield XD 9mm
----- 4 16-round magazines (note: the Beretta and Springfield magazines are not interchangeable), 2 fully loaded
----- Rob is much more accurate with this handgun than the Beretta because how much easier it is to pull the trigger (basically, add 5 yards to the Beretta ranges), but for various reasons, he still prefers the Beretta.
----- Pointer-release style holster (basically, the holster locks the gun in place until you unlatch it with your pointer finger.)

---- Boxes of ammo (Not going to worry about hollow point or ball rounds, as with these zombies it won't matter)
----- 550 .22LR
----- 20 12-gauge rifled slugs (1600 fps muzzle vel, 1 oz lead)
----- 6 12-gauge 00 buckshot
----- 115 9mm

---- Other Items
----- UpLULA Speedloader (A must have if you're going to shoot a few hundred rounds at the range...)
----- 5 CR2032 Batteries for Mossberg red-dot sight (seems to last around 24 hours of continuous usage on each battery. Just need to turn off the red-dot when the shotgun is not in use... The batteries themselves are pretty common to find and are often used as computer CMOS batteries)
----- Ear-muff hearing protectors
----- ear plugs (when doing indoor shooting, I tend to double-up on hearing protection at the shooting line, and just use the ear plugs when I'm away from the line observing or loading mags)
----- gun cleaning supply kit (well, my own hand-made kit...)
----- 2 magazine holsters (each can hold 2 handgun mags on your belt)
----- 3" folding knife
----- 2" boot knife
----- Small 3x30 binoculars
----- simple 2-point sling - to attach to the Mossberg for hands-free carrying
End of what's inside the back-pack

---- 2-gun soft rifle bag with shoulder strap (I usually put the 2 .22 rifles into this when carrying them around, like from the car into the gun range)

---- 1-gun soft rifle bag (I put the Mossberg into this and carry it by hand)

- On Rob himself:
-- Soon to be useless iPhone... Wink

OOC: I'll not be nearly as detailed about the weapons or even ammo count in the story. The equipment list is largely a starting point (and is really what I have in the house right now, too...). And fortunately, the ammo needed are very common calibers, too. (though most cops carry .40 or .45 caliber handguns, these days).

Jerard entered the emergency stairwell and listened. The concrete walls and stairs would echo the uncanny shuffling feet of any zombies present. Dan, behind him also paused.

"Cats are treed, Foxes go to Earth..." he muttered under his breath.

"Right. Down it is.

Down one flight of stairs, the entrance back into the mall was locked, but the door to the loading dock in the back wasn't. The welcome red glow of an Exit sign over the loading dock door indicated a way out.

The two ran to the door and looked through the narrow window to the parkade outside. Three zombies had just finished of another victim outside.

"This way," Dan said, indicating a nearby cube van. The doors were unlocked. Dan climbed into the driver's seat and looked in the usual spot where lazy drivers would stash keys. "Nuts. Oh well." He kicked out a panel below the steering column, and took out a knife. Peeking underneath, he made a clean slice with the knife and pulled out 4 thick wires, stripped and twisted 3 of these together, then brushed the 4th against the bundle, and the engine roared to life. "Give me a hand with this. I need you to yank on the top of the steering wheel, so that we can break the steering lock."

It took a minute for the two of them to break the lock. In that time, the zombies outside, having heard the truck start were beating against the door. Another pair, apparently former security guards entered from the mall entrance.

Dan shouted something which Jerard interpreted as "Hold on!" and jammed the accellerator to the floor, aiming the van at the bay door, and the zombies behind it...

OOC: Ive updated the discussion with Zitch's character sheet, too. Welcome aboard, I'm sure that hardware in your trunk will be helpful!

P.S. "Dan" is very much prone to making the potentially poor decision to go UP one level in the parkade to retrieve his car. (Which, by the way has a 2-way alarm/starter system in it, so he can at least see if anyone has opened the door, and if it's still in condition to start/run from when the entrance on the 3rd floor collapsed.) This might be a little side adventure, or Jerard might talk him out of it.

P.P.S. In the excitement, Jerard and Dan forgot to check the contents of the van as well. Wink Cube van, so no direct access from cargo compartment to cabin.

It was supposed to be a nice day today. Rob was supposed to be off today, except a call from his boss early this morning had him working at home implementing something one of the salesmen promised a client would be ready on their site. Ready for today. While over beer last night.

He forced that line of thinking out of his head and looked forward to what should be a relaxing afternoon with Jeff, his older brother, drinking beer and shooting cans out on his brother's property way out in the middle of nowhere. Jeff was an ex-military survivalist nut with a real fetish for guns. An fetish that got Robert himself interested in firearms.

But first was lunch and picking up ammo and supplies. Rob was to meet his brother at the mall as Jeff would be checking out the hunting and outdoor store to check out the new survival gear before lunch.

Rob shut off his laptop, as his work was done and checked the time.

"Good", he said out loud. He has enough time to pack up the car and drive over.

He got up from his desk, wearing jeans and a red polo shirt with a front pocket, opened up his gun safe, and pulled out his "gun bag", an old college booksack that had been requisitioned to hold his handguns, ammo, and shooting and cleaning supplies when going out to the range or the field to shoot. A small bag containing his shooting glasses and his hearing protection was hanging off of a zipper on the left side of the bag. The main section of the bag had two zippered sections, and the back one was even further separated to carry a laptop close to one's back. Rob stored the holsters and the guns in that laptop flap, and places the magazines outside of that out of convenience. The other section held the ammo boxes; at a quick glance Rob could see he'll have to resupply, but he'll worry about that later. Cleaning, reloading, and other supplies were stuffed in the outside section; a part normally used for pens, erasers, staplers, and a graphing calculator in his college days. A few side pockets contained other items, like a sling for his shotgun and a small set of binoculars.

Rob pulled out his handguns, a Beretta 92FS and a Springfield XD 9 Service, verified they were empty and cleaned them up a bit with a rag, and put them in a holster and placed them into the laptop section of the bag. He next took out the magazines for those guns and stashed them into the backpack: four 15-round mags for the 92 and four 16-round mags for the XD, two for each gun already loaded with hollow-point ammo. He also grabbed the 32-round mag for the 92; it looked silly when it sticks out another 6" from the bottom of the magazine well, but Rob had to admit that shooting away with that ammo-capacity can be quite fun.

Rob then grabbed the "tactical shotgun", a Mossberg 500 pump-action 12-gauge with an 18.5" barrel, modified with an extendable M4 shoulder stock with 5 shell holders and a red-dot sight on top. Jeff had joked that this would be their zombie gun when Rob showed him the final product. He retracted the stock to its shortest position, verified that the gun is empty and the red-dot sight is turned off, gave the barrel and stock one wipe with the rag and stuffed it into its own rifle bag.

Rob then grabbed his final two firearms in his collection; affectionately termed the "plinker guns" by Rob and his brother, both were .22 tube-fed rifles. One was an old Savage Arms 187N, an old and pretty beat-up rifle. Rob had rescued it from the previous owner for very cheap, cleaned up and repaired the gun to where it wasn't jamming anymore. The wooden stock is still quite beat-up and scratched to hell, but it is still a reliable shooter when taking out cans at the field. The other was a newer Marlin 60 with a inexpensive 3x-9x variable zoom scope. That was for hitting further away targets or for hunting smaller game to cook up when Rob and Jeff feel like roughing it. The stock was a beautiful cherry-stained finish. Both of these were inspected, cleaned and stuffed into a larger rifle bag with a shoulder strap.

All three bags were placed in the trunk of his car (along with the Bokken a friend had given him that Rob leaves in the trunk) and Rob took off. He got to the mall with plenty of time to spare, but he felt something was off. As he entered the mall's outer parking lot, it hit him: there seems to be a large number of people just milling around on the streets. There weren't many on the streets he took, but he remembered seeing some pretty nice-sized crowds down side streets. Then he saw the crowds of people running out of the main entrance of the mall.

Some mall shooter? Rob thought at first, given the recent news. He pulled the car to a corner of the parking lot, pulled out his phone and tried to call Jeff.

All the phone could tell him was "We are sorry, all circuits are busy. Pleas try again". So he did, with the same message. He tried sending a text to his brother's phone, but all it would tell him was "Error: Send failed". This was becoming very strange, as the cell phone capacity at the mall was usually very good. Rob tried the browser on his phone to see if there's been any news reports, but, again, his phone complained that there was no network available.

By this point, he had opened his trunk and started rummaging through the bag, finding the small 3x binoculars. From behind his car, he started scanning through the crowds; he could see that some people were getting trampled, but he could not see into the mall to see why.

Pop! Pop! Pop!

The distinctive sound of gunfire over the crowd noise got his attention and started scanning to the right of the entrance, and around the corner of the building he spotted a police car, a cop, and a small group of people. Some of the people were crouched down in a tighter group doing something that Rob couldn't identify, others were standing up and... walking towards the cop? The people was definitely moving towards the cop, but they sure were walking funny to Rob.

Pop! Pop! Pop!

The cop had his gun out, backing away, and was firing on the closest person, what looked like to be a small woman in a miniskirt that wasn't much bigger than half his size.

Pop! Pop! And the woman finally goes down.

What in the world is going on? Rob thought. He put down the binoculars in the trunk, opened up the larger rifle bag, and pulls out the scoped Marlin 60. He turns the zoom ring around to the maximum zoom, 9x, and looks through the scope from a kneeling position.

What he saw confused him even more.

At this zoom, he could see that the cop is yelling something in his radio. Rob moved the scope to the side and saw the next closest person making his way to the cop: a tall, disheveled man with... is that blood around his chin and shirt?

Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop!

Rob brings the cop back into view and could see that he was reloading his service gun. By the time he got the gun back to bear, the tall man was coming into view on the scope. This time, the cop stopped back-pedaling and took an aggressive stance.

Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop!

The tall man looked completely unaffected. How could this be? though Rob. He couldn't possibly be missing at that range!

As the taller man got closer, he started raising his arms towards the cop. The cop took a stop forward, using his left arm to shove the tall man back, and had the gun in his right hand at hip level, firing the gun into the tall man's stomach and chest area.

And as if Rob didn't have enough surprises today, what the tall man did next took the cake. Seemingly unaffected by the gun firing at him from inches away, the shove got him off-balance, but the tall man managed to grab the officer's forearm, seemingly to steady himself. But instead, the tall man brought to cop's arm towards himself and bit into it.

What the hell? would pretty much describe the infinite loop going through Rob's head. The cop screamed out loud enough to be heard over the sound of the fleeing crowd. The gun in his hand fired one more time pointed down, probably into his own foot or leg, and the cop went down as the tall man ripped a piece of the cop's arm and uniform off.

The tall man then dropped the cloth and flesh from his mouth and fell onto the cop, biting him on the right shoulder. At this point, Rob almost dropped the rifle, taking the whole scene out of view. He took some deep breaths for a moment and looked through the scope again. Some of the group had caught up to the melee and were now grabbing onto and biting the still thrashing officer. He moved the scope to the right and saw the still down body of the first woman the cop shot at. Further right, and he saw the other group slowly dispersing and walking towards the cop; what they were crowding around was finally visible.

Rob could now see the distinctive blue of an officer's uniform and the shape of a duty belt, but the officer himself was largely an unidentifiable mess. Rob could make out an arm about 5 feet away, still holding onto a gun and having large chunks, as Rob can best surmise, eaten out of it. One of the crouched figures had what looked like intestines in his mouth and was trying to pull it from the gore.

Feeling the bile rising, Rob moved the scope back to the cop being eatened alive. The crowd of people were now tearing off what they could get their hands on, biting into whatever they could get near their mouth. The cop was not moving on his own, being dragged whichever way the crowd pulls him.

Rob had seen some grisly combat footage from his older brother's tours, including one that featured what was left of Jeff's best friend from an IED explosion and many videos of the remains of insurgents when hit by 30mm explosive rounds or grenades, but Rob was not prepared for this. He had never witness such a scene happening right in front of him, even if he was watching it from afar. He had reached his limit; Rob bent over and threw up on the ground behind his car.

For some time, Rob stayed there, squatted down, left hand on the ground keeping him steady, right hand still gripping the Marlin, looking at the orange and yellow mess on the concrete. Then, one thought came to him: Jeff might be still inside!. For a minute, he tried to use the phone, but it was useless. Eventually, he made up his mind.

Rob checked the area around him. He was some distance away from the mall, and it doesn't look like anybody is paying any attention to him. He placed the marlin down in the trunk and pulled the other firearms from their bags and laid them out. He took the pistols out of their holsters, and pulled the ammo boxes out of the book-sack and checked his stock.

"Hmm, an unopened box of 100 rounds of 9mm ball rounds, about a dozen more hollow-points in a second box, an unopened box with 550 rounds of .22LR, and an unopened 20-round box of 12-gauge slugs," Rob quickly eyeballed. With all the boxes out, Rob reached into the book-bag and felt some loose shotgun rounds and pulled them out. "And... looks like 6 rounds of double-oh buckshot", he surmised, glad that those probably fell out of an empty box during a previous range or field shoot. He then pulled out all of the pistol magazines and the speed-loader and proceeded to fill in the empty pistol mags, starting with the hollow-points in the open box, then opening the box of ball rounds. He tossed the empty box into a corner of the trunk, making a mental note to throw it away properly later.

Once all of the magazines were filled, including the 32-round extended mag for the Beretta, he loaded both guns with their standard mags (15-round mag for the Beretta) and holstered them, picking the thumb-break holster for his Beretta. Next, he loaded the Mossberg, pushing 5 00 buckshot shells into the tube, pumping the action to load a shell into the chamber, then pushing in the final 00 buckshot shell. Opening up the box of slugs, he took out 5 and put them into the shell holders on the stock. Rob then took the dust cover off of the red-dot sight and verified that the battery is still good with the sight showing a nice bright red dot that is projected 25 yards out when you look through it. He opened up a side pocket on the book sack and fished out a sling, attaching it to the shotgun.

Next, he opened up the box of .22 LR ammo. He wasn't sure how much good they will do, but these still can be lethal rounds. On each of the .22 rifles, He removed the followers from the front of the magazine tubes under the barrels, he dropped in .22 rounds until they were full and replaced the followers, locking them in place.

Fishing around in the booksack again, he finds what he was looking for: two magazine holsters that each holds two mags to his belt; one came with the Springfield XD when he bought it, the other he got for free when he bought a gun holster. Unhooking his belt, Rob pulled it most of the way around, and threaded the mag holsters onto it around the left-side belt-loop. He then threaded the belt back around, and buckled it back in front. The Beretta holster is then attached to the belt just in front of the right side belt-loop; a tight spring holds the gun holster in place. The 92's extra mags are then placed into the mag holsters, with the extended mag furthest back. The binoculars are stuffed into his left pocket. He then unhooks the glasses and ear muffs case and leaves it in the trunk, as he's pretty sure he's not going to be able to have hearing protection for this. He does remove the yellow-tinted shooting glasses and places them in his shirt pocket.

Closing the ammo boxes, Rob placed them back into the booksack. He then put the holstered XD pistol in the bag with its mags, zipped it up, and brought it and the other guns to the front passenger seat, placing the long-guns with their stocks in the passenger foot-well and the magazine tubes and barrel resting on the front of the seat, with the Mossberg closest to the driver. The booksack was placed on the seat itself.

Satisfied with where everything was placed, he shut the passenger door. Going by the trunk to close it, he spots the wooden sword; he decided to pick it up and closed the trunk. Rob sat down in the driver's seat, placed the bokken in the passenger footwell with the other long guns, and started driving around the mall, looking for the best way to enter and look for his brother....

----------------------------

OOC: Wow... that was a really long one! And to think, I even edited it down from what it was.

At this point, Rob is still unsure what's going on. He hasn't made the connection to zombies yet, and doesn't know that they are blind, have super hearing, or can only be killed by hitting the brain. Him witnessing the cop event would clue him in about the latter, though.

I was trying to find a proper motivation for Rob to actually look into entering the mall, so hopefully the "looking for the older brother" excuse would suffice. If Jeff does show up, he'll either be dead or dying from a zombie infection. Either way, Rob should end up with Jeff's SUV keys, which should contain a figurative arsenal (Remember, Jeff is a survivalist gun nut, I'll make up a list if we do take that option. That said, all will be semi-auto; Jeff is a civilian and modern full-autos are really hard to come by without getting in serious trouble. He does have weapons with silencers available, though... Wink ). The SUV will be nearby Dan's car, and if Rob doesn't know if Jeff is dead yet, he won't be willing to have it jump-started and taken. He will be willing, if reluctant, for it to be broken into and the arsenal taken. Either is moot if Rob knows Jeff is dead and has his keys. Jeff will also have a Springfield XD-45 Compact concealed carried at his right hip with 10 .45 caliber rounds that Rob knows about.

Rob would be willing to join up with someone entering the mall, and though he'll be reluctant, he will give up the Springfield to them. If giving a ride, the long guns will be transferred to the back seat. Once out of the car, he will primarily use the shotgun until he learns of the sound and precision issues (Ideally, someone could set up the scenario for me and I can take Rob's first zombie kill from there). The shotgun sling will be around his back and the booksack will be over the sling. The bokken would be tucked into the left side of his belt, probably under a magazine holster. If he's with someone else, he'll probably give up the bokken if they can carry it as it would be awkward to carry with the shotgun sling.

The .22s should probably be in the double-rifle bag (it does have shoulder straps, making them pretty easy to carry) if someone's available to carry them, otherwise, he'll probably leave them in the trunk of the car, until Rob learns of the headshot and super-hearing issues. After that, he'll switch from the shotgun to the rifles if they are available, as the .22 rifles fire much more quietly than even the 9 mm handguns, much less the boom of the shotgun (believe me, you feel when that shotgun is fired next to you...).

My next entry will not be nearly as long...

P.S. Actually, Rob will meet up with Jeff, even if it's just in the parking garage. And once he has the keys, we'll stumble onto Jeff's SUV (probably a large one like an Excursion or Yukon with tinted windows) and have it available to switch to, whether we go to Dan's car or not. And, basically, anybody who wants a weapon in any configuration, Jeff will have had. Heck, I might relax the "no full-autos" requirement just a bit; Jeff is survivalist gun-nut and gets caught up in anti-government rhetoric. Him acquiring full-autos with not-so-legal methods wouldn't be out of the question. Just gotta be reasonable (I.E, no RPGs or bazookas, though he might have grenades and explosives).

With a sound of tearing metal, the van roared throught the bay door.

"Are you INSANE? That's a Hollywood stunt!" Jerard looked at Dan in disbelief.

"No, any van can do that." Dan answered. "Once." A sickly sweet aroma filled the van, which shuddered on bent wheels through the parkade. "Smells like we lost the radiator, we need a new ride. My car is one level up from here. I'm going to go get it."

"What was that about cats getting treed?" Jerard asked, but Dan wasn't listening. He did pause a moment though, thumbing something on his belt, which answered with 2 short chirps, then a series of 6 chirps a few seconds later. "My car is okay, it started." Dan gunned the engine, and the van shuddered as it accellerated. "Get down, this is going to be rough."

The entrance to the third level had a sign indicating a 6' clearance. Jerard was certain that the van was taller than he was, which meant that it shouldn't... More tearing metal and the van lurched as if mortally wounded, but it kept going. At the top of the ramp, 3 zombies appeared to be looking at something further into the parkade. A flash of recognition went through Dan's mind "The drunk from before..." The van hit two of the zombies and screeched sideways, almost toppling over before hitting an upright pillar. The impact was almost soft compared to the preceeding short drive.

The scene outside was astounding. Corpses littered the ground between the collapsed mall entrance and the main parkade area. A man was crouched down beside a black SUV holding something that looked like it belonged mounted to an assault vehicle, watching the corpses for signs of movement. A girl, perhaps 20 or so was huddled behind him with her fingers in her ears. The man swung towards the van, and a deafening roar marked the demise of the third zombie, which had been moving aimlessly, as if it could neither see, nor hear. Nearby a red Toyota Supra idled quietly, its park lights glowing softly in the smoke and dust.

Dan and Jerard's ears rang with the echoes of the shot. Though the shots in the store were plenty loud enough, this was another order of magnitude altogether. "Holy shit" Jerard muttered (Or maybe yelled, Dan coudn't tell) The two unbuckled their seatbelts and got out of the van carefully, hands raised in what they both hoped was an un-zombie like fashion...

OOC: Hi Jeff!

“Get over here!” yelled the guy behind the machinegun. “And watch the bodies! Some of ‘ems playin’ possum!” So saying, he swung his machine gun around to cover deeper into the parkade where a sizeable horde of zombies could be seen staggering this way. Actually, some of them are crawling, having had their legs or significant parts of their lower torsos blown off.

Carefully, Dan and Jerard made their way over, pausing once along the way for Jerard to place a carefully aimed round into the cranium of one still twitching body. When the two reached the mysterious machine-gunner, they gaped at the sight before them. Lying prone on the ground, looking over the sights of a bipod mounted machinegun, was a beefy guy casually sipping from a can of Budweiser. In fact, there were at least four other empty cans strewn around him. However, the thing which Dan and Jerard noticed most was the guy’s bloody leg. It had been tied-off, using an olive-drab hanky as a tourniquet.

“You fella’s stupid or something?” the man asked. “If you’d already gotten away, you shouldn’t’ve come back!” He chuckled at that, but both Dan and Jerard could easily see his face was pale and sweaty.

“You’ve been infected,” Jerard remarked, pointing his pistol at the unknown man.

“So that’s what it is? Thought my blurry eyes were from the beer buzz!” The guy then cut loose a short burst at the encroaching zombies.

After the noise had died down, he continued speaking as if there were no interruption. “Guess I’m done for then. Take the girl and go. I’ll buy ya some time.”

Jerard hesitates but Dan shows no compunction, eagerly moving to his beloved Supra. Jerard shrugs and motions for the petite blonde, who appears unhurt, to follow after Dan. Before following himself, Jerard speaks one last time to the man they’re leaving behind. “Tell me your name. You’ll be remembered.”

“Jeff,” he replies with a thumbs-up.

*****

Two minutes later, the three remaining mall survivors were making their way out of the outdoor parking lot. Progress was slow owing to the fact that some of the paths were blocked by crashed and abandoned vehicles. Zombies wandered the lot and Dan had rammed a number of them. Now he was swearing and about the scratched paint, dents and broken headlights.

The girl, whose name is still unknown, was sobbing in the back. Stress probably. At least, she wasn’t hysterical. Jerard was staring moodily out the window at the numerous shambling figures in sight. No “prey” are left in the vicinities of the mall.

Not quite true. The controlled and rhythmical blasts of a car horn sounds and the Supra is brought to a halt while the occupants look around for the source.

They spot it soon enough. A blue sedan surrounded by four of the dead who were beating at it with their fists, trying to get in. They haven’t broken a window or windshield yet, but it’s probably a matter of time. The occupant sounds his car horn again, and the dead become even more frenzied.

“What the hell’s he doing?” Dan wondered as more zombies turn towards the source of the commotion.

“Too dumb to live,” Jerard remarked as he unbuckled his seat belt and the passenger-side door.

“Oh, and what you’re doing isn’t dumb?”

“There’s only four. You get moving and sound your horn. If you can draw away their reinforcements, I shouldn’t have any trouble. Meet you at the East Exit.” Without waiting for an acknowledgement, Jerard slammed the door shut and started jogging towards the besieged car as Dan drove off sounding his horn as per the plan.

Unfortunately, the occupant of the sedan wasn’t aware of the plan and wouldn’t quit it with the car horn. Cursing in frustration, Jerard increased his pace in hopes of getting that guy out of there before more zeds arrive.

He came to a stop about 10 feet away, making sure to keep one car between him and his targets. Taking careful aim, he fired, and the first zed’s brains were splattered over the sedan’s windshield. The second one turned around and futilely tried to reach for Jerard over the intervening obstacle. Jerard fired again and the second went down. The pistol barked twice more and the third and fourth, who hadn’t yet completely figured how to go around the blue sedan, went down as well.

Went the last went down, the driver finally got out.

“Thanks, I…” he started to say, but Jerard started shoving him into motion. “Move!” he yelled as he fired twice more at an approaching zed. Chest hits, but good enough to knock the zed off-balance and fall.

The two hurried off, dodging zombies, attempting to escape the parking lot. Although Jerard wanted to make the East Exit, they ended up being herded north. Several times, they came close enough that Jerard was forced to fire. Soon, he was down to half a clip remaining in his second gun.

Rob drives around the mall, staying on the outer, clearer section of the parking lot as the inner lots were starting to get crowded with people flowing out of the mall and basically loitering around. Though the open windows, Rob could hear the occasional handgun firing off and the faint sound of machine gun fire.

What in the world? Robert thought. Jeff had an M240 medium machine gun; the same model firearm Jeff carried in the Marines, acquired pretty much illegally, and kept it cased up in his SUV. But Jeff rarely brought it out as it was his "baby". The thought reminded him to pick up the phone and try to give his brother another call. Unfortunately the network was still not letting him connect.

Rob slowed down and started scanning through the binoculars at the field of cars and people loitering about. It felt surreal; some cars were crashed, many just looked abandoned, blocking lanes between the parking spots.

Driving around a truck, he spotted two people crouched down digging away at a small corpse. Rob slowed his sedan to a stop 20 yards away, grabbed the shotgun out of the passenger seat, and stepped out the car, yelling "What's going on here?" while extending the stock to fit him comfortably.

The two figures turned their heads towards him and Rob was taken aback. Blood was tricking from their mouths, one had a gash in his left arm, the other had her ribs showing, and both had pale, sickly looking skin. But what really took Rob aback were their eyes; they weren't looking at him, through him, or, it looked to Rob, at all.

The two stand up and started shuffling towards Rob, arms as if reaching out for him. Bringing the Mossberg up to his shoulder, but still keeping it pointed down, Rob yells "Keep back". The two figures, a medium-sized smartly dressed man and a fairly tall woman in a ripped up business suit, were still moving towards him, unconcerned about the 12-gauge.

When the two got to around 10 yards from him, Rob used his left hand to turn on the red-dot light, then brought his left hand to the slide, bringing up the barrel, and holding the red-dot in the sight to bear on the man's chest, keeping both eyes open. "Keep back, I said! I will open fire!" he barked one more time.

They can't be conscious! Rob concluded. After witnessing the cop being attacked, and seeing what was left of the corpse behind them, he strengthened his resolved, reached up with his right thumb and pushed the tang safety of the Mossberg forward, disengaging it. Holding the red dot on the man's chest, Rob gripped the pistol grip, leaned his body forward to take the recoil, held the butt-end of the stock against his shoulder, and pulled the trigger.

Boom!

The force of the blast shoved his shoulder back a couple inches, forcing Rob to raise the the barrel and red-dot to move a short distance up, but the effect was apparent. 8 black holes appeared in a six inch pattern on the man's chest and he fell backwards.

While still looking down the barrel, Rob pumped the action and brought the red-dot to bear on the woman's chest when he noticed that the man was already slowly getting up, as if he simply tripped backwards, startling Rob for a moment. These things don't die? he thought, but then his mind flashed back to that woman going down when the cop was shooting at and, in a moment of inspiration, raised the red-dot sight to between the eyes of the woman--now 3 yards away--and pulled the trigger.

A messy hole appeared around where the tall woman's nose used to be and her body simply falls forward as Rob works the slide, ejecting the spent shell into his open car. Bringing the Mossberg to the left, Rob placed the red dot in the middle of the profile of the man's head and the Mossberg barks once more. The man's head jerked and he fell away to the ground, unmoving. Rob pumped the action one more time, send sending the used shell over his open door and bouncing off the hood of the car and loading the fourth of 6 buckshot shells. Out of habit, his right thumb went up and re-engaged the tang safety.

What are they? Zombies? Rob thought. A car horn followed by some gunshots snapped Rob back to attention and he spotted some movement over parked cars some distance away. Rob checked his surroundings, finding that he's alone with the 3 corpses, and fished the binoculars out of his pocket. He spotted a red car speeding away, dodging parked and abandoned vehicles and loiterers who were walking towards the commotion, while blaring its horn, and two men stepping away from a blue sedan, one holding a handgun. They were running by loose groups of what Rob was guessing to be zombies like the ones he just encountered, the man with the handgun occasionally firing at zombies that get close to them.

Rob jumped back into his silver Accord, holding the Beretta at his hip steady as to not have it bump into the console or the side of the seat and have the butt of the large handgun impale him uncomfortably in the side. He deposited the Mossberg back onto the passenger seat, slams the driver's door closed, threw the shifter back into drive and floored the accelerator. The front wheels pulled the car forward with a small chirp, and Rob looked for the best way to get to the two men being herded by the horde away from him towards the North.

Dan had almost completed a lap of the parking lot. The sound of the horn and the squealing of tires was doing the job of keeping most of the zombies away from the stalled car and its occupant, but once even a little bit distant, the monsters would go for the nearer target.

Coming up on the corner, he slid the car sideways into a group of 3 zombies, knocking them over the guard rail and into 2 stories of empty space over the roadside. He winced with the impact, knowing that impact would damage more than just paint. "It's a car. It can be fixed," he told himself, not for the first time in the short, but grisly drive. He sounded the horn twice more and waited for the zombies which had been following the red car to get closer again.

The girl in the back let out a short scream with the thud of impact, reminding Dan that he still had one passenger. He had tuned out the sound of her sobbing while concentrating on driving and getting te zombies attention.

"Are you injured at all?" he asked. He could see the girl's face in the mirror. She didn't look sickly, just a little pale. Her light makeup was streaked by tears, and her eyes had a reddish rim to them.

"No, I'm okay. That man with the big gun saved me." She took a deep breath, visibly steadying herself.

"Hang on. I've got to pick up those other two. Get over to my side of the car."

Dan reached over and pulled the seat release, flipping the passenger seat forward, The engine roared as Dan picked up speed, leaving the crowd of perhaps 20 more zombies behind. A grim, dark sense of humor was starting to edge into his thoughts to cope with this bizzare day. He suppressed it for the time being, as he didn't think that his passenger was in the mood.

He thumbed the door unlock button as the car screeched to a halt beside Jerard and the other driver, and pulled the door catch.

While the two were getting in, he surveyed the carnage around the blue sedan. 4 more corpses, dark blood staining the concrete near their heads. Dan knew that he'd be having nightmares about this for the rest of his life. He still had nightmares from that bit movie that he'd seen on TV when he was five.

Almost before the passenger door was closed, Dan let in the clutch and the car was in motion. Much as it pained him, he knew that his Supra wasn't the right vehicle. The car had 4 seatbelts, but it was really a 2+2, not intended for four adults, much less them plus the sword, guns and the box of bullets on the floor. Correction, Jerard had picked up the box and had the magazines from his guns on his lap. He was attempting to refill one of them, which seemed a difficult task in a moving vehicle.

"Introductions," Dan said. "I'm Dan, the fellow with the guns is Jerard."

"Zengar"

"Jen" says the girl in the back.

"Hi. Unless there are any objections, I'm going to go to the Toyota dealer on 9th street. We need a bigger vehicle. I think we need to take a Land Cruiser for a test drive..."

Jerard didn't know how much ammo he had left but he knew it wasn't much more. The gun he was holding now is unfamiliar and he had neglected to keep count of the number of rounds fired from the first gun before he ran out. His thoughts were interrupted by Zengar's shout when another zombie, unnoticed as fatigue started to dull Jerard's senses, suddenly loomed up before him. Skidding to a halt, Jerard started to raise his weapon, but instinctively realised that he was too slow and the zombie too close.

A loud crack marked the bullet's supersonic passage, and the small hole appearing in the zombie's temple marked the end of its flight. Looking around, he noticed a figure waving to him from the outskirt of the parking lot. At the same time, the Supra screeched to a halt near him.

Grabbing Zengar by the neck, Jerard shoved him into the rear of the car before righting the passenger seat and climbing in.

***

"Hi. Unless there are any objections, I'm going to go to the Toyota dealer on 9th street. We need a bigger vehicle. I think we need to take a Land Cruiser for a test drive..."

"There's another person alive out that way," Jerard said, gesturing with his gun. "We should go see if he needs any help."

"Gonna be a tight fit," Dan complained as he turned the car in the indicated direction.

***

They soon saw a silver Honda Accord coming their way, and both cars pulled to a stop beside each other as Dan lowered his window.

"You folks alright in there?"

"Thanks for the help," Jerard replied. "Thought I was a goner for sure!"

"Don't mention it. Sorry to cut this short, but I need to find my brother."

"Hold on," Dan interrupted, his brow furrowed in thought. The face before him seemed somewhat familiar. No, rather, there's a resemblance to a face he had seen...

"Your brother's name Jeff?" Jerard asked. He too had made the connection at the same time as Dan.

"How...? Is he...?"

Dan shook his head. "Sorry. He didn't make it. Saved our asses though." An exaggeration perhaps, but understandable under the circumstances. "Now, we owe it to Jeff to get out of here alive."

With a visible effort, the distraught brother pulls himself together. "Where to?"

A good question, Dan thought. He could see that Zengar and Jerard were badly winded, and Jen needed more time to recompose herself. Also, Dan could feel the beginnings of an adrenaline crash coming on. "We need a safe place to rest..."

"My girlfriend's place." Jerard spoke up. "15 minutes from here. It's the top floor of a three-story apartment with two staircases. Also, she replaced her front door with a reinforced steel door."

"By the way, I'm Rob."

"Jerard".

The driver raised his hand in a wave, "I'm Dan."

Jerard pointed his thumb to the backseat occupants, "Zengar and Jen". The man in the back seat nodded his head, the girl kept looking down.

"How are you doing for weapons?" Rob inquired, figuring that, with the news of his brother and given the circumstances, Jeff would want his little bro to stick with other survivors.

I'm already thinking of myself as a survivor? It's not like we're out of the woods of... whatever this is, he thought.

Jerard held up the two guns and said, "These two handguns and Dan uses a katana."

Rob immediately recognized the model of the guns Jerard held up. "How are you doing on magazines and ammo?"

"We have a few boxes for ammo, but the only mags I have are those that came with the guns," Jerard answered.

"Well, you're in luck; I carry the civilian version of those Beretta M9s. Here, try these out" Rob said as he grabbed the three standard magazines from his belt and handed them over to Dan, who passed them over to the passenger seat occupant. Jerard took one and slid it into an emptied M9, pulled back and released the slide. The gun responded with a satisfyingly metallic clank, loading the top round in the magazine into the M9's chamber.

Jerard responded, "Thanks, but..."

"... Don't worry, I got plenty more, plus another handgun with more mags, and this. " Rob interrupted, holding up the Mossberg in view.

With a quick decision, Rob picked up the scopeless Savage Arms .22 rifle and offered the stock end to Dan. "Oh, this will be easier to pull off head shots on those things than the handguns. The rounds aren't powerful, but they don't have to be to get into the brain case."

"Why are ..." Dan started incredulously.

"... I only ask we all survive this, " Rob again interrupted. "There's 16 rounds in it already. Just pull back and release the bolt to load the first round and push the tang safety forward and it'll be ready to fire. Semi-auto, so just line the sights up with a zombie's head and pull the trigger. There's only so-much lead I can throw accurately by myself. Let's get to where we need to go and we'll decide what to do with the rest of what I have there."

Dan glanced at Jerard, who nodded, and Dan passed the old rifle over.

"Let's go, the horde's starting to get close", Jerard said.

Rob nodded from his sedan, "go ahead and lead; I'll follow."

With that, Dan closed his window and took off for the exit in his Red Supra, with Rob in tow closely behind in his silver Accord.

The roads were deserted. A few blood smeared cars were abandonded haphazardly where an unsuspecting driver stopped and was attacked, but there were no cars moving. Dan kept the speed to a reasonable limit, being careful not to lose the silver Accord, which was folowing behind. Occasionally, he could see a zombie wander into the streets behind him, attracted by the noise of the cars. He ignored traffic lights and stop signs, not wanting to be caught at a stop for any length of time. The familiar beginnings of an adrenaline crash were starting to set in.

"Jerard, man I hope we'll be able to crash a while at your girlfriends place, I need a bit of a recharge."

Jerard looked at him closely "Not sick are you?" there was some dried blood on Dan's sleeves.

"No, that all just kinda took it out of me, y'know?"

Jerard looked a moment longer. There were no signs of fever, and Dan still looked alert enough, watching the road. "Take the next left, it's only a couple of blocks."

They rounded the corner, and saw a block of apartment buildings. A 3 storey walk-up looked like it was under assault, A dozen or so zombie corpses littered the street, and 4 or five more were mindlessly beating at the front door. A few white, panicked faces could be seen in the second and third storey windows.

"Aw, shit." Dan muttered tonelessly. "When the car stops, shoot once, then I'll move. Rinse and repeat."

Jerard shook his head. “If you move, I’ll lose my angle on the rest.”

“What about shooting from a distance?” Zengar asked.

“With the rifle? Good idea.” Jerard remarked as he searched for the button to lower the power window. “Dan, turn the car sideways to them…” He was interrupted by a shrill scream which wafted into the car as the window slid down.

“What the hell?”

“There!”

All heads turned to where Zengar pointed.

Through a window on the second floor, in a decently furnished apartment, they saw an old man struggling against a few zombies. Behind him was a woman, the wife perhaps, was screaming as she threw porcelain plates, bowls, vases, whatever she could get her hands on. The man eventually succumbs, and, as a zombie nears the woman, she throws herself headfirst out the window.

Needless to say, the results weren’t pretty.

Jerard was the first to recover. “I think they’ve broken through the second staircase,” he said as he opened the door and exited the car, to be joined by Dan and Zengar.

“What’s wrong?” Rob asked as he joined them, toting a rifle and a shotgun, one over each shoulder.

“That there’s our destination,” Jerard replied, waving at the building before them as he passed a Baretta to Zengar.

“Shit. Do we go elsewhere?” Rob asked as he hands Zengar his Marlin rifle.

“Where? We came here because we needed a safe place to rest. My girlfriend’s apartment is 3-11. If we can make it there, we should be safe.”

“We won’t get much rest if they’re pounding on the steel door while we’re trying to sleep.” Dan remarked.

“Then I guess we have to clear the zeds.” Jerard answered grimly as he took a step towards the now-silent apartment block.

"Zengar, you know how to use that?" Rob asked. He turned around and saw that Zengar already had the Marlin at his shoulder, looking through the scope at a distant stop sign and turning the zoom ring.

"Pretty cheap scope." Zengar took the rifle off his shoulder, looking around the rifle at the other controls.

"Yeah, but it's all you need on a rifle like that," Rob replied as Zengar was manipulating the safety buttons on the back of the trigger guard. "It's a weak round, but it's still plenty enough to kill if you hit them in the head."

Satisfied that the rifle-holder seemed to know what he was doing, Rob went to his car and pulled open the bag that was in the passenger seat. Removing the holstered beretta on his hip, he slipped the holstered Springfield XD onto his belt and placed the extra mags for it on the mag holders on his left hip. The Beretta 92FS went into the backsack. Though the 92 was his favored handgun, the situation was that he'll have more rounds available to him with the XD as others in the team needed the 92's mags. He kept the extended mag for the Beretta in its spot, in case one of the others needed it in a pinch.

He extracted the two buckshot shells from the tube magazine in his Mossberg. Opening up another compartment in the booksack, he pulled out 3 slugs, entered them into the tube, and followed up with the two buckshot shells he removed earlier, ensuring they would be the next two rounds available after he fires off the round in the chamber.

"Really should have gotten more buckshot," Rob muttered under his breath. Though he has a nice load of slug rounds, he knew they would over-penetrate a human target. And they leave a pretty significant bruise on his shoulder if he shoots a dozen of them through the already lightened Mossberg. He largely had them for sighting in the red-dot on the shotgun.

He then opened up the glove compartment and pulled out a flashlight and a few batteries for it that he always kept in there. Verifying that it worked, he stuffed it into the backpack and zipped it up.

He then slung the Mossberg over his right shoulder and around his body, making sure it falls properly into a "ready" position when he lets it go, and slipped on the booksack over both shoulders. He then grabbed the bokken, slipping the wooden sword through his belt in front of the mag holsters.

He closed the door and instinctively reached for his keys, stopping himself when he realized that it's not as if anybody will be stealing the car. He turned to catch up with Jerard. Jen was just getting out of the backseat of the red car.

"Do you think we have a minute?" Dan eyed the zombies near the building warily

"We ought to, why?"

"I want to set up a distraction." Dan got out of the car, popped the hatchback and got out the jack handle and a spool of network cable. He propped up the jack handle next to the driver's side fender, and tied the end of the network cable to the sticks he'd used to prop them up. He then pressed a bew buttons on the remote on his belt, and the Supra's locks made a "chunk" noise as they engaged. He then threw the remote closer to the building, but away from the door. "This way."

The five of them made their way as quietly as possible to the east, getting closer to their destination. When the spool of wire had almost run out, Dan gave it a quick tug. The jack handle fell against the fender with a dull thud. Several of the zombies turned, but not towards the car, they were facing the direction of the remote transmitter. "It's set to a silent alarm. It will page the transmitter for 90 seconds, and if it's not shut off after that, then the siren will go off for another 90 seconds. That will help cover us for shooting. It's loud." Dan whispered to the group. Jerard, Zengar and Rob set up for shooting while several zeds started shuffling towards the bush, some even joining them from inside the lobby of the building. They could hear the transmitter frantically beeping from their position almost a hundred meters away. The entryway to the building had almost cleared when the siren started.

Dan stood, sword drawn, feeling a somewhat useless, but watching their backs as the three armed men started methodically firing at the zeds outside of the building. He motioned for Jen to watch to the left as he stood watching the right, covering his ears from the sound of the weapons fire and the shrill discordant scream of the dual sirens on the Supra.

At both sides of Rob, Jerard and Zendar started aim and slowly fired on the group of zombies, taking care to do head shots. Rob aimed his Mossberg at the group, but realized that the zombies were at the far end of the effective range of buckshot out of the pump-action. Getting closer would be out of the question, and the two other shooters were doing a good job taking down the zombies. A spent cartridge from the Savage Arms Jerard was firing bounced off of Rob's side, and he figured that he could make himself more useful in another way.

Rob backed away from the firing line, pointed the Mossberg down, and checked around. Dan had his sword in his right hand, left hand over his ear to muffle out the sound, and was checking the right; Jen looked aware and watching the left. They were backed up on the wall of an apartment building; there weren't any windows above them and Rob figured they were covered there.

Rob then kneeled down, letting the Mossberg hang down, and took off and placed his booksack on the ground in front of him. He opened up the compartment with the ammo and quickly rearranged the boxes so that the .22LR box was on top and opened.

Rob looked up in time to see that Zendar was out and was simply looking at the rifle, finishing first because he had the smaller capacity magazine and was shooting quicker than Jerard, due to having the scope available for aim. Rob leaned forward and tapped the man in the leg, causing Zendar to look back at him and take notice. He handed the scoped Marlin to the kneeling Rob. Jerard saw the motion, glanced back, and realized what Rob was doing. He then turned his attention back to the zombies in front, carefully firing away.

Rob held the rifle in his left hand, standing it up on the ground on the stock and, with a twist, unlatched and removed the follower from the front of the tube magazine. He grabbed a small handful of the .22 rounds from the box, dropping a few into the bag and on the ground, and started loading them up, dropping them one at a time pointing forward into the tube. Once the last round he dropped into the tube was visible in the drop hole, Rob picked up the follower and inserted it into the tube, turning it to latch it into place. He then released the half-open bolt by pressing on the release button, then pulled back and released the bolt handle to load the first round.

The whole process took all of 10 seconds, probably faster than any of the many other times Rob had loaded this rifle. Then again, he wasn't under the threat of zombies those other times.

He then tapped Zendar in the leg with the side of the barrel. Zendar, who was watching the front, grabbed the Marlin 60 with his left hand and brought the rifle back to his shoulder and continued firing just in time for Jerard to turn and hold out the Savage Arms 187N's stock to Rob. Rob grabbed the rifle and started the process over again...

The noise of gunfire attracted many of the zombies from the ground floor. one zombie toppled from the second floor railing, walking towards the noise, then stood and limped towards the group.

Having to hit the head made shooting them difficult, and a few of the zombies were hit in the torso, which did nothing to slow their advance. Even so, few of the zeds made it to the sidewalk on the other side of the street before being felled by one of the two rifle bearers. The car alarm had stopped now, and Rob was reloading Zengar's rifle. Jerard's rifle was quiet, as he was scanning the ground floor for more movement.

Through the ringing in his ears, Dan heard a high pitched yelp from around the corner to the right. Edging closer to the corner of the building, he listened intently for more sounds, but heard none. As he checked around the corner, he saw a zed crouched over a feebly struggling man, a large dog, still on its leash lay in a pool of blood to the left. The dog had apparently bitten the zed's arm when his master had been attacked, and been killed for it.

Dan moved quickly, burying his sword in the zed's skull, piercing it through from the nape of the neck to the front. He then gave the sword a slight twist and pulled it free in one clean motion. The zed's victim wasn't moving, but it would only be a matter of time. Dan pulled out one of the combat knives from its sheath and drove it into the man's eye socket, twisting it sharply to destroy brain tissue. He left the knife in place, and scanned the area for more signs of movement. His eyes came to rest on the dog. An image of zombie dogs, cats, and rodents came to his mind in a moment of panic. He backed up so that he could see the group. The shooting had slowed, and Rob was reloading Jerard's gun, now. Dan returned his eyes to the dog. It still wasn't moving. Dan considered destroying its head, but he knew that they really needed to know if animals could be affected as well. He cut through the tendons on the dog's legs and returned to the others, explaining the situation.

More zeds were coming from neighboring buildings, and the ground floor at least seemed relatively clear of zeds. Jerard turned to the others "Grab your stuff, we're going to make for the third floor there."

Some time later…

As Jerard waited for Rob to join him, he massaged his upper right arm. Fatigue, plus the weight of the Beretta he was holding, was causing his bicep to ache fiercely. However, he put the thought out of his mind when Rob, followed by Dan, came to a halt behind him. Looking past Dan, Jerard could see Jen, carrying some of the extra weapons, and Zengar, carrying the remainder and watching the rear.

Not that there was much danger from behind. They had secured the staircase back there using duct-tape and furnishings taken from a couple of apartments. Still, better safe than sorry.

Reaching out his left hand, Jerard tried the door knob before him.

:Locked.

Breathing a sigh of relief, Jerard bypassed the door for the next apartment unit’s. This one had its door forced open, and Jerard slowed as Rob took the lead with his shotgun. From the corner of his eye, he saw Dan shift his grip on the bokken he was holding.

Incidentally, the reason why he wasn’t using the katana was because, after it had gotten lodged in a zed’s skull a second time today, he had decided a blunt instrument would serve better.

“Go!” Dan whispered, and the three stormed into the final uncleared apartment like they had so many times already today.

Rob fired once as soon as he entered the living cum dining room, and a zed’s head exploded messily. He traversed right and fired a second time, propelling a second zed backwards over the low counter that separated the kitchenette from the main living area.

Meanwhile, Jerard fired twice at the zed on their left flank, coming out of the bedroom. A double-tap as Carol called it. Unfortunately, the first shot was off as the target was shorter than Jerard expected, and recoil resulted in the second to miss completely. But before the zed got close enough to attack, Dan swung down the bokken hard, striking with a loud crack.

***

After checking to make sure his targets were down for good, Rob came around to check on Dan who was retching. What he saw caused his stomach to twist in horror.

“Her name was Sally,” Rob heard Jerard mutter hoarsely. “She was only six.”

With a solid thunk, Jerard slid home the final steel bolt, securing the security door which is most definitely not a standard apartment feature. Breathing a sigh of relief, he slumped down to the floor with his back against the cool metal door.

From where he sat, Jerard could see Dan’s feet sticking out over the edge of the couch onto which he had collapsed. He had probably gone to sleep even before his head was down.

Though out of sight, Jerard could distinctively hear Rob disassembling one of his weapons. He had probably found the kit containing Carrol’s gun cleaning stuff. She had a habit of leaving it lying around in random places.

As for Dai and Jen, from the sounds of it, one of them was in the kitchenette, and the other was in the bedroom or its adjoining bathroom.

It all felt surreal to Jerard, having all these people whom he had only met a few hours ago in his girlfriend’s apartment. To think that just this morning, the sun had risen as normal, as if to signal the start of just another ordinary day. Now, as it sets, the shadows of night lengthen over a landscape vastly different from this morning.

Jerard’s reverie was interrupted by an out-of-place cheerful tone. It was several seconds before he realised that it was the ring tone from his cell phone. Hurriedly, he drew it out of his trouser pocket and glanced at the caller ID.

Carrol.
