| Since time immemorial, seven races dwelt upon the land of Deltora. Each race possessed a gem of incredible power, and thus was the balance of power maintained.
Everything changed when an awesome foe appeared in the lands to the north. The legions of this Shadow Lord swept south, plunging Deltora into the depths of war. The races of Deltora banded together to face this common threat. However, the magic of the Shadow Lord proved too formidable, slaughtering the armies of Deltora with contemptuous ease.
Just when all hope seemed lost, a hero step forward. Following divine instructions received in a dream, Adeen, a simple blacksmith, forged the Belt of Deltora. He then traveled to each of the seven races and obtained from them the seven gems. These he affixed to the Belt of Deltora. Using the combined power of the seven gems, Adeen successfully defeated the evil Shadow Lord.
After that great victory, Adeen was crowned king of a united Deltora. Under his rule, and that of his descendants, Deltora flourished in an age of peace and prosperity for generations.
In the end, this golden age became the seeds of Deltora's undoing as, little by little, each successive king relaxed their vigilance. All this time, the Shadow King, defeated but not killed, had watched from afar. When he judged the moment right, he sent his foul familiars after the one obstruction to his desires. The Belt of Deltora, the heirloom of the royal family, was broken and the seven gems scattered across Deltora. Without the Belt and the gems, Deltora was swiftly subjugated by the Shadow King.
Sixteen years later, young Lief, the son of a blacksmith of an insignificant village, discovers that his father had once lived in the capital, a friend of the last king of Deltora. He had been there when the Belt was broken and the gems stolen. However, he had recovered all those broken pieces and reforged the Belt. This he entrusts to Lief, along with the charge to find the seven gems as well as the heir to the throne, the only person capable of bringing forth the Belt's magic.
So it is that, on his sixteenth birthday, Lief departs his village on a quest to free his country from the tyranny of the Shadow Lord.
