Hikaru is a young boy who happens to stumble upon Sai, a great Go player who taught the Emperor Go. A master of Go, Hikaru originally has no interest. However as he plays for Sai and learns more about the game itself, he quickly begins advancing. Throughout the anime Hikaru gets better at Go. At first his care for the game is minimal until he experiences a crushing defeat due to his inability to play on his own skill. Not wanting other players to fight him only on the basis of playing "Sai", Hikaru begins to play more himself. Near the end of the anime he is excellent and begins to show alot of promise with his own skill and not Sai's.
SPOILER AHEAD:
WIthin him Hikaru wants to be recognized as a Go player himself, but regrets deeply when Sai disappears off the mortal plane. It is not entirely Hikaru's fault, but he does regret not letting Sai play as much as he could. This leads to the highest point of development for Hikaru as a Go player, because he realizes that because he learned with Sai, a great deal of his skill is derived from how Sai plays. They are seperate, but forever together.

Curiousity lingering, young Hikaru Shindou, on that fateful day changes his life, forever. In grandfathers attic Shindou discovers a mysterious Go board, not knowing the tainted past this board would have, Shindou caresses his hand over the board etched in blood.
From the depths of another world comes past Go legend Fujiwara Sai, from then on Shindous life as it is would take its most significant curve.
With Sai at his side, Shindou, with every growing day becomes engulfed with the passion to learn Go, to win, and eventually surpass his mentor.
Growing with age and confidence, only time is between the eventual arrival of the Hand of God -the best move in the game- and the end of Hikaru Shindou's long journey. ^^

emm he is a black haired boy but he like bleaches his front part of his fair. if you watch the series you can see him change gradually from height and appearance.
