Sai is a spirit who can't stop playing Go and the mentor of Hikaru Shindo. Sai wants to play the divine move (a.k.a. the Hand of God or Kami No Itte). In the manga and anime, Sai had possessed the real-life figure Hon'inbo Shusaku and through his body, became the world`s best go player of all time. Extremely effeminate by today's standards, Sai is often drawn with traditionally feminine features and mannerisms, and many fans sometimes mistakenly call him a "she" in passing only to correct themselves after realizing their mistake (see Sai's sex).

When Hikaru discovered Sai, he learnt about Sai's story and his eagerness to play go again. Sai wanted Hikaru to play go. However Hikaru had no inerest in the game in the first place but eventually he begin to like playing go. Though other people is unable to see Sai but they are able to feel the difference when they are playing with Hikaru himself or Sai.

His life cut short many years ago, Fujiwara Sai's ambition to acheieve the "Hand of God" (best move in Go), was banished from the world of the living. Killed for accusing a high Emperor of cheating, Sai's spirit remain adrift waiting for his spirit to be awakened with the caressing of the Go board Sai's blood was spilled upon.
Several hundred years have past, and Sai has yet to inherit the Hand of God through his past living apprentices. Now, this time, it is HIkaru Shindou who has bestowed upon his bloodstained Go board. With that, Sai is giving another oppurtunity to acheive the hand of god. Commanding the board through Hikaru, Sai seeks out the best players of Go in this era.
But has Sai's time run out, as young Shindou grows enormous interest in Go. Will Sai ever play the Hand of God?
